Re: [slim] SB3 reboot loop -- hardware error?

2014-01-29 Thread nicketynick

Funny, one of my SB3's starting doing the same thing this week as well!
I changed power supplies, tried ethernet, but still doing the same
thing. Still seems to run SuperDateTime without any issues, so that's
good.
I'll try the xilinx just to see.
Wondering what I can do to help prevent the same from happening to my
other SB3
Any further trouble-shooting ideas appreciated!

Re: [slim] Hail Mary time for Logitech with its Google TV?

2010-10-05 Thread nicketynick

Do you know what's really sad?? In the old days (not so long ago), we
wouldn't have been left here to speculate madly and drive each other to
distraction. One of the guys would have politely left a note that didn't
give away the farm, but at least set minds to rest. It seems that The
Company has left us here as the kooks in the funny farm, to help out
the less experienced who find their way here, and to stew in our own
juices!
I wish I'd had the foresight to build a larger collection of SBs. I'd
love to have music in a few more rooms, and I also have no interest in
anything TV-attached. Our one TV only has co-ax in, and I'm pretty sure
its not even stereo! Don't really need it for the news

Um, $69!!!
Its a total copycat. Obviously without the audio specs. They'll flood

If there's anybody out there unhappy with their SB's, I'll give you $69

My problem is I'm a second-class North American (Canadian). Logitech
Canada has 3 products available: radio, boom, and controller (but no
receivers!!!) And when you see on the forum people complaining about
coming soon for 9 months, you have to wonder

iPhone;579448 Wrote:
Can't follow the logic. The Duet is in Stock and available. They can't
build the Touch fast enough to keep it stocked for the States (partly
because demand was higher then expected in the EU). And the Receiver
should be back in stock as soon as the boat gets in and unloaded.

I will say one thing though, they are going to have a bad December if
they don't get off the Dime and stock some warehouses with product.

They just had favorable reviews in TAS and Stereophile so somebody
should make the decision to bump the production run number higher.

I only saw one Touch in use at CEDIA 2010 at the XM/Sirrus Booth.

I would have agreed with you in the Slim Devices days, but I'm not so
sure Logitech isn't more interested in moving down-market (mass
market). I noticed on the US logitech site that they're packaging the
touch with some mid-market (to be generous) Logitech 'computer'
speakers. I guess I'm cynical, but I would bet they will make further
efforts to get down to mass market in order to compete with Orb.
Hopefully they keep a unit with decent audio specs as well, but..

[slim] Cheapest way to fix weak wireless signal?

2008-01-19 Thread nicketynick

A friend just bought a DLink WBR 1310 wireless router which is on the
second floor, and the WUA 1340 USB Adapter for his PC in the basement.
The signal is too weak, and he claims he can't do anything about
placement, although I'm going over tomorrow to check it out. His budget
is pretty tight - what's generally the cheapest way to extend the
wireless? Just by adding another WBR1310 and use it as an access
point/repeater? (I'm assuming it can be configured for this? usually
referred to as WDS mode?) The antennas are generally more expensive,
aren't they?
Thanks all!

I think you might get better reception with a card with an antena. You
could even add an antenna on a leash if the PC is located so that it
 shields the card's onboard antenna.

Thanks for the response JJZolx. According to the link, that USB adapter
is supposed to come with a leash so you can place it to maximum effect -
I've asked him to confirm he got it in the Canadian packaging.
Reviews I've seen on these Dlink products have been pretty bad, might
be better to spend a bit extra for the Linksys?

I know for a fact that at least one of the links from the RIB page, The
CD-Rom store in Toronto, sells SB's and Transporters.

One would hope that Logitech isn't going to be so crude as to just
kick out the previous retailers. But in a thread somewhere one of the
SD guys, when asked why the Where to Buy tab was empty, indicated
that it was all in Logitech's hands, so I imagine that they are
running through an exercise to come up with new distribution
agreements, etc, so there may be some retailers who fall out at the
 end of it all.
I'm just interested to see it getting into some broader retail
channels, so that, for example, Xmas shoppers in this backward burg
of Kingston might actually see a demo.

the Audiotronic flyer is the first I've seen of the Logitech
Squeezebox, and to my way of thinking, its an excellent move. Retail
stores in lots of markets, mid-fi to hi-fi range, so one can pick up
whatever else is needed out of a somewhat decent range of product
(better than anything in BB or FutureShop, anyway). If Audiotronic gets
some nice demos set up, I'm sure that a reasonable number would get sold
as Xmas gifts, just because they seem like a cool thing to have!

Re: [slim] Where to buy in Canada

2007-11-23 Thread nicketynick

I guess my point was the SB3 is finally available in a mid-fi A/V retail
shop with a large presence in Canada (27 stores in 27 cities/towns in
Ontario, anyway). It would make sense that they would be setting up
some nice demos so people can see what the SB3 (or Transporter in some
shops I'll bet) can do, which should facilitate some cross-selling as
well. This should begin to provide the kind of market visibility to
get SB3 into the mainstream - prepare for the onslaught!
And it's true, when all paid for, it would only be a few more $$ than
direct-order, and its worth it to me to avoid the hassle of dealing
with UPS! (YMMV, etc) I've never had any trouble with any courier as a
corporate client (that's who they set up to serve), but as Joe
Consumer, not one of them has been any good to me. (but now we're OT)

[slim] Where to buy in Canada

2007-11-23 Thread nicketynick

Hi fellow Canucks,

Since the resellers tab here hasn't been fixed to show any retailers
here in Canada yet, I thought I'd let you know that I saw that
Audiotronic actually advertised the SB3 in a glossy flyer this week. Of
course, their website (www.audiotronic.ca) says no stock, but I'm
assuming they do have them in the pipeline if they're in the glossy! At
$368.88, it seems a little expensive to me, what with the puny US$ and
all, but its almost worth it, considering what a pain it was dealing
with UPS.
I wonder if audiotronic will be making any efforts to
bundle/cross-sell, etc?

This is a new setup procedure to me, but it sounds like the SB3 isn't
connected with the wireless? If you leave the ethernet connected,
everything works? You've gone through some sort of wireless setup
during the process? Can you confirm wireless setup and signal before
unplugging the ethernet? (via the player interface - I can't think of
the exact menu chain)
Seems bizarre to me.

[slim] Sonos getting smarter?

2007-10-24 Thread nicketynick

You can now get a $99 ZoneBridge, which is basically the wireless mesh
access point; add a ZonePlayer 80 at your stereo ($349), and the fancy
remote ($399 - too expensive, I'm sure SD is planning to be
better), and you've got the basic system that SB3/SC provides, at a
price that puts it much closer to being in a position to take away
market share.
IMO SB3 is the superior solution, but its interesting to watch how the
market develops.

the market is going to realize mp3 is compromised, and pricing is going

Actually, you can already see this at zunior.com, a small Canadian

It would be nice if emusic were able to sign up the same labels.

Anyway, Pat had the right answer - the price is what the market will
bear, especially for a niche item like the Transporter. Logitech just
seems to be applying a rather crude form of market survey. They may
also be trying to push (encourage) the distributor model (vs direct) as
well, although I'm not sure how much sense that makes for the
Transporter..

Mains and 12V and battery (6 C cells)
Also has USB ... but not clear what it is for .. says it can connect to
 iPod and memory stick.

Now that looks like an ideal piece of kit for Squeezenetwork/mp3tunes
on the go! (see related thread)

Any chance that there will be a SqueezeNetwork tie-in?
I'm not keen on paying Ma Bell any more than I already do, but if there

Unfortunately, my library is FLAC, and I'm in Canada (curses!), so I'm

Re: [slim] Why I want a stand-alone, slim, Slim Server!

2007-06-26 Thread nicketynick

I just had a thought... (scary, I know)
Is there an 'HD installable' SlimCD out there? ie. minimal Linux OS
with Slimserver included? That way I get myself a dedicated Slimserver
machine (whatever that may be), I drop in the CD and run the install,
drop in any plugins I might want to add beyond what may already be
there, and then forget it. And then if something does go wrong, just
start from scratch again no other lengthy installs and
configuration required (the problem when the all-purpose machine
crashes and needs rebuilt) Should be fairly idiot-proof, no?
See, the all-purpose machine I can do without when I'm stupid or
unlucky enough to break it, but my SB's? No way!

There is a downside if SlimCD doesn't have a plugin you want, but what
 other downsides are there?

Yeah, its the plugins - I was using SlimCD for a while, but missed some
of the plugins. Another problem is that the one machine (the one with
the broken Ubuntu) still keeps trying to do stuff on the HD and grinds
away continuously, even when running SlimCD with the internal HD
unmounted! (music is on an external drive). I'm not sure what's wrong
with it, but I can't let it run like that.
I think I will look into installing SlimCD direct to the HD. Why do I
need the IDE flash if I'm installing to the HD?

[slim] Why I want a stand-alone, slim, Slim Server!

2007-06-25 Thread nicketynick

Because, once again, I am without my SB3's, because the machine I run
SlimServer on is out for repair! I use this machine for too many other
things, and somehow keep managing to break it! If I could get a $200
box that I plug into my network, plug in a USB drive with music,
configure Slimserver via a browser interface, (basically a better
spec'ed NSLU2 with Slimserver preloaded) and forget it, I'd be a happy
man. At least then the only way I could break it was when I was trying
to do something to Slimserver!
There's just too much complexity in an all-purpose PC(and
temptation to muck about with it..)

An enterprising individual could offer several different solutions with
different pricing - different sizes of enclosure, different capacities,
 expandability, different performance levels.

The two biggest pitfalls to doing this are: a) support and b)
uncertainty over products to be released by Logitech. Supporting such
a system could be very costly as you deal with things like ripping and
tagging issues that have nothing to do with the server. The extremely
uncertain future with whatever Logitech is going to do with their new
'streaming media division' is a potentially huge monkey wrench. It's
immediately obvious that Squeezebox isn't the future.

How to avoid the pitfalls...
Convince SD/Logitech that it's the profitable thing to do!

My observation is that pretty much everything out there has a $100-200

higher-margin, lower volume sales.
Ever notice its almost impossible to buy last year's camera for $50?
They all disappear, with the new crop always being in that $100-200

If Logitech can get an SB product out there at $199 (with a profit),
then look out! I seriously doubt it would be recognizable as the SB we

got rid of the logo altogether and painted the surface a smooth matte

Try the emusic subscribers station on lastfm:

A lot of what it plays will be available on emusic.

There is also the emusic/pandora mash-up (for those lucky sods who can
still get Pandora)

Re: [slim] Odd behaviour.....

2007-05-18 Thread nicketynick

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies! Here are some answers to your questions:

Q:What plugins are you running?
SuperDateTime, AutoDim Display, Lastfm Scrobbler

Q:How do you start the list of songs when the song fails to play?
This is a good question - I most often use RandomAlbum - I would say
there's an 80% chance that the occurrences have happened during Random
Play. Hmmm... I wonder if it's happening near the end of the album when
it wants to load the next one.I'll have to watch for this.

OS is WinXP, SS 6.5.1, flac files streamed to the SB3 for transcoding.

Is there a particular debug that would be helpful to run?

[slim] Odd behaviour.....

2007-05-17 Thread nicketynick

Anybody seen this before?
Occasionally the SB3 will stall - just doesn't start playing the next
song - it displays the upcoming song, the buffer is full, but the song
doesn't start playing until I press play, at which time it re-buffers
('show buffer fullness' activated) and starts playing. Seems strange
for an emergent problem - probably just need to restart the server?

[slim] Sleep timer brightness

2007-05-07 Thread nicketynick

Hi,
Can anybody explain how the SB3 decides what brightness to go to when
the sleep timer runs out? Obviously I'd like it dim, but sporadically
it shows up as bright. Here's my guess:
Setting when on or off: 4 (required to see it during daylight)
Setting when idle: 1
Adjust automatically: yes (so should go dim when on or off, if I'm not
pressing buttons, right?)

Except what I'll do is hit the Brightness button on the remote, instead
of something else, which seems to override the above settings. So when I
hit the sleep button, once the timer runs out, it goes back to the
manual setting I entered.
I need to learn to just hit Now Playing or something, don't I?
Thanks for enlightening me!
Nick

Or even better, use the AutoDim (AutoDisplay?) plugin to automatically
dim it after bedtime, no matter what I've been pushing...
Much appreciated!

Well, it makes the Sonos look cheap.
Fly-by-nighters - say they pocket $4000 per system. All they have to do
is sell 1000 units fast, take the $4M, divide it up and close up shop.
(hypothetically you get the idea - how can you trust a company
whose business model seems to indicate they don't really need to be
around for long to recoup their investment)
I wish I didn't have a conscience.
