Question: Squeezebox connected to 2-channel or 5.1/6.1/7.1 channel
system?

- 2-channel system
- 5.1/6.1/7.1-channel system

Like any Slashdot poll it's certainly missing options. I'd vote for
both as well as not any one of my Squeezeboxen are the main.
Although, if I had to consider it probably would be the one connected
to the home theater. The garage and bedroom players both get ample
playtime connected to their own little amps and a pair of speakers.

So,
5.1
2.0
2.0

Maybe location? I like experimenting with stuff but it appears you're on

I'd certainly agree with posting in audiophile and I'm sure you already

try seperately. Got to know, did you get one? Mine should be here this
week. I'm looking to compare it with the small Sonic T amp. Of course
the biggest addition is the ability to drive two pairs of speakers. The
Amp100 will end up in my garage driving Elan ceiling speakers and then
later a pair of outdoor speakers.

Of course Amp 100 brings in 61 results.

More likely find something that will just do track splits at gaps
greater than a certain length. Then manually remove the offensive
material and re-encode.

Audacity (audacity.sourceforge.net) won't do it automatically but at
least you can see a timeline on the audio and cut what you want out. It
can import most audio formats and output depends upon encoders
available.

Re: [slim] SlimDevices Squeezebox 2/3 and Sonos ZP80

2007-03-03 Thread notanatheist

Interesting that you state the Sonos is better at multi-room sync. In
what way is it better than the SB2/3? I have 3 SB units at home and
regularly sync/unsync them. The only thing I can think of that could be
considered a 'hiccup' is the current track restarts. Not enough to
bother me though.

Does the Sonos give you web control as well? Is the remote RF or WiFi?
I find it convienant to be sitting at a computer and just pop up the
web interface to make changes to the volume and playlist on the fly
without searching for the remote.

I certainly agree on the display issue though. It is nice to see what
is actually playing on the screen and/or have other information at your
fingertips like the date/time/weather, visualizations, track info, or
custom text welcoming people. Not exactly something the Sonos can do.
Squeezebox obviously gives you far more freedom to setup your device
however you please and is not tied to any particular platform.

Take a look at the tomshardware link above for starters. Intel's 'new'
Core2Duo for the desktop is an awesome processor choice paired with the
right motherboard. The 2.13Ghz you saw is an E6400 and due to the design
of the CPU is outperforms processors well over 3Ghz. So, it's not so
much that you are getting dual processors as it is you are getting
radically new technology for the desktop that vastly outperforms
existing components. AMD touted for a while that it's not about the
clock speed and it bit Intel in the butt until now.

Question: What is the most SBs you have had running on your network (at
the same time)?

- Only One
- Two
- Three
- Four
- Five
- Six or Seven
- Eight or Nine
- Ten to Twenty
- More than Twenty!

Two. Waiting for another $100 of two special for 2 more. Then save some
pennies and get 2 more. I want one for work. Need at least 5 at home.
In all reality, what excuse is there to NOT want one in every room?!

[slim] Re: NAS vs Linux box

2006-07-08 Thread notanatheist

With Core Duo 2 coming out this month I'd build a new box. I just
recenty rebuilt my fileserver with expanded storage using a 3Ware IDE
RAID controller that allowed me to use existing drives around the house
to build a RAID5 array. 3Ware is a hardware RAID controller and works
like a charm in linux. Personally, I keep my OS on a seperate boot
drive. Reason being, if you grow tired of a certain distro and/or it's
capabilities you don't have to lose your data drives. SMEserver and
ClarkConnect both have a web interface to configure shares and other
services. I know CC also offers Webmin since I'm using it.

A NAS will offer simple setup, likely require SATA drives, consume less
power (which could lead to overall performance issues with updating your
database or browsing your music via the web interface), likely be
quieter. So, yeah, pros and cons for sure. If I had the money I'd love
to play with an Infrant ReadyNAS. All things considered, all I spent
(on Ebay) was $250 for the parts I didn't already have (motherboard
with 64bit PCI and 3Ware RAID card).

[slim] Re: NAS vs Linux box

2006-07-08 Thread notanatheist

Well, if you're a CLI junkie and want UNIX familiarity on Linux checkout
Slackware. You can install Webmin on Slackware or do everything you need
via SSH. Also, checkout package managers like Swaret and Slapt-get and
don't forget to visit linuxpackages.net for more.

Personally, I think you'd enjoy Slackware the most out of any linux
distro. Text based install. Slick and fast. My only complaint - still
defaults to a 2.4 kernel.

Lastly, look into LVMS if you're going to use your onboard IDE
controllers for multiple hard drives.

2006-06-22 Thread notanatheist

If anybody needs space for mirroring their plugins I'm happy to help. My
site gets 5GB of space and I'm using about 500MB. Also get 25GB traffic
each month. All for less than $4 a month.

As for figures, I'd estimate less than 25% of owners are forum
partakers. I'd also figure at least 25% of members to have more than
one SB.

Oh, and why not mention the POS Roku HD1001 I had before a Squeezebox

Good job trolling. When the VFD is ready for the Mac let me know.

High-def pics on the plasma are pretty cool. It ain't good for much

Another note, I'm glad Slimdevices isn't on the shelf of every BestBuy

As far as the browser holy war, I've never even seen Slimserver in

[slim] Re: Optimizing Slimserver on a dedicated machine

2006-02-04 Thread notanatheist

This isn't being written to intentionally advocate Linux over Windows.
This is just from experience.

My linux box: 1.8Ghz Athlon XP, 512, Slackware 10.2, Slim 6.2.2 series,
music playing off two Squeeze's, XMMS, and random file transfers across
the network (photos, video). NEVER a hiccup. (This excludes the 'out of
space' errors related to 6.2.1)

The damned Windows box at work: 2.4Ghz Celery D, 512MB, Slim 6.2.1,
only Softsqueeze from another box and some network access. Damn thing
drops *ALL* the time. Microsoft's implementation of TCP/IP is borked.

Ideally, do a text based install on a distro, don't run X, stick in the
corner. Use Intel or 3Com for your network cards if you can. Administer
everything through SSH. The web interface is as snappy as can be.

[slim] Re: Off-topic: zip file expander

2006-01-29 Thread notanatheist

For the built-in XP one you can usually right click and Open. If
something else is your default then open a folder, go to Tools, Folder
Options, File Types, find *.zip, and change the associated program to
the Windows program. I'm not in front of a Windows PC to remember
exactly what it is called but you should see it.

SB is about convienance. They're small, low powered, and have multiple
outputs. Xbox is power hungy, potentially loud, and has to have a
display. I've thought of getting an older Xbox to mod and use as a
media player with my TV but I would still use the SB for 97.5% of my
music.

We can also show massive support for Slimdevices and leave any other

[slim] Re: Slimserver-ready NSLU2 NAS or better?

2006-01-12 Thread notanatheist

Native format for the Slug is Ext3, a standard linux filesystem.
Mirroring drives on the Slug shouldn't be an issue. I'm fairly certain
the Linksys firmware supports it but not sure about the Slug firmwares.
Flashing isn't difficult if it's something you're comfortable with. Then
again, I've probably flashed over 100 BIOS's, routers, firmwares, etc...
My WRT54G doesn't run stock firmware, my Sharp Zaurus has bared witness
to other installs, and who knows what else.

As for the Mini-ITX stuff, at least with that you have a PCI slot and
can choose to use a real RAID controller if you like. You could even
run *gasp* Windows if you wanted to! My advice for anyone looking at
that solution, the 600Mhz and 800Mhz boxes will run fine with smaller
60W power supplies if you aren't running more than one hard drive and
optical drive. The 1Ghz and faster models should have at least an 80W
power supply otherwise there's issues with the network initializing.
You also have the option of using any ATX power supply. The small 180W
Sparkle Power Inc supplies designed for E-mach/HP replacements will run
forever and be enough to power the board and at least three to four
drives.

[slim] Re: Slimserver-ready NSLU2 NAS or better?

2006-01-11 Thread notanatheist

Now that the server is back up

Let's not forget the ideal behind SlimDevices and the sqeezebox. The
idea is to have a headless server somewhere and not have all your music
on a device with a display. Those are called mp3 players (sarcasm).

With that in mind, setup a Windows box with RDP/VNC or a linux box with
SSH (easier in my opinion) and set the BIOS to halt on no errors so it
always boots up completely.

To answer somebody's question, I didn't test my Slug before I clocked
it where it's supposed to be and lack any skills to solder it back to
133Mhz.

Mini-ITX would offer better through put than the NSLU2 simply due to
the onboard controller. External hard drives attached would probably
funtion at nearly the same speeds. You get a much faster CPU and more
RAM with miniITX solutions.

For US and probably Canada I recommend logicsupply.com. For UK and
others on the other side of the Atlantic go with mini-itx.com

Fluorescent lighting, cordless phones, neighbors cordless phones, even
cell phones, large antennas, poor electrical insulation, microwaves,
wireless keyboards and mice, and on and on. A ton of stuff generates RF
that can cause interference. Surely there's a tool out there to measure
it's level around the home. Perhaps measure at various time throughout
the day. Personally, I jack in whenever possible.

[slim] Re: Slimserver-ready NSLU2 NAS or better?

2006-01-09 Thread notanatheist

The NSLU2 is one slow device. I ran some tests on it *after* I over
clocked it and the slug took nearly 4 hours to backup 21GB of data
across the network to a USB 2.0 drive enclosure. FWIW, I tested both
ways by backing up from the slug to the PC while the drive was NTFS
then formatted Ext3 and copied back. It took about 15 minutes less time
copying the data back to the drive. Minimal network traffic at the same
time. I originally unslung mine but had to revert back to the Linksys
firmware to support NTFS until the drive was backed up. Time to
re-slung. Reading on the NSLU2 page says browsing is slow but playback
is OK. I'm not sure if I'm okay with just OK. For under $200 you should
try to take the mini-ITX route!

What version of Windows? X64 has issues with plenty of USB wireless.

Your video card shouldn't matter since it doesn't exist. Is it an X800,
1600, 1800?

Also, if you think the wireless is the problem try installing just the
driver and not the wireless utility.

[slim] Portland Event - (was Re: Seattle Event)

2005-12-04 Thread notanatheist

I wanted to thank you again Patrick for stopping in Oregon. I drove up
from Eugene to check things out and it was worth the trip. The MacForce
staff was friendly and accomodating. I almost didn't find the store as
the area was so industrial.

I have both the SB2 3 setup and they're great! Got a little bug on
the 2 but that'll be another post. These things smoke my crappy little
Roku M1001!! They're fast and hella responsive. Any changes you make in
the browser to the playlist is instant! The Roku SB lags hardcore when
making changes. I'm so glad I'm not the one that paid for the Roku. The
only nice thing about the Roku is it's a little metal tube you can use
to whack people with.

[slim] stange bug: changing volume add songs to playlist

2005-12-04 Thread notanatheist

Okay, made the title descriptive to help anyone searching. I went
through the first 10 pages of posts and searched a few strings and
haven't found the answer yet.

So, what's my problem? My SB2 behaves a little erratic. When changing
the volume or adding songs to the library the screen instantly changes
back. I don't think it did that last night. The SB3 definitely doesn't
do that. When I change the volume the SB3 stays on that screen for at
least a second giving me the chance to see where the volume is and
adjust it further.

I checked my server settings too. I can't seem to find what's missing
or if it was something I caused. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

A couple years ago I built my own NAS box using a Mini-ITX board, a
3ware RAID card, and 4 Seagate 160 GB PATA drives (which seemed huge at
the time) running Fedora Linux. One of the drives failed after a few
months and I was able to replace it without any downtime, but the
 rebuild only took an hour.

Dem, you're good. 3Ware is *the* way to go for a RAID setup on an
existing PC. The support in linux is there. No freakin' softRAID. I use
softRAID on my present file server but it's only RAID1. If I was going
to upgrade it I'd go 3Ware and RAID5.

As for the Infrant boxes, why run SlimServer on them? Why not throw
together a really cheap linux box with a GBit NIC, NFS mount the NAS,
then share it!! That'd be smokin'. That's my thoughts and intentions.
