Re: [slim] Synchronization for dummies

2009-02-02 Thread oreillymj

Alan,

I know you've done great work in getting sync to work reliably.

However what's still needed is an Apple style UI which makes it easy
for the user to understand what they are about to do. The underlying
complexity should be hidden and have the UI and players work
differently makes it hard to know what will happen.

I think it comes down to what player the user is actively controlling
and what get's displayed on the UI. Also, what is the users intent?

If I'm using the Jive remote to control my Duet and I ask to synch with
an SB3, the SB3 should get the Duets playlist and begin playing. If the
underlying implementation means that you need to tell the SB3's
synch-group to join the Duets, then so be it.
What I don't expect to happen is for the Duets playlist to be lost when
it synchs with SB3. The intent is based on the fact that I'm controlling
the Duet.

The same would apply to an SB3 if I was standing in front of it using
an IR remote. If I select Synch with Boom using the remote, then I
expect the Boom to begin playing the SB3's playlist.

Andy,

I wasn't suggesting that internet radio in SC was flaky, rather that
relying on Internet streams in general is a bit hit & miss depending on
the broadcaster/ISP you're using.

Re: [slim] Delay between two synchronized SB's

2008-11-20 Thread oreillymj

Synching was greatly improved in 7.2.1, but is even better in 7.3. I've
found it stays in synch perfectly when playing back local files stored
on my server. I don't bother trying to synch internet streams as the
web induced latency just makes it too hit & miss.

However, even in 7.2.1 the players should attempt to get back into
synch.

If you look at the server settings page, you'll see some logging you
can enable on various bits of the server including synch. Your server
log will then be able to tell you what the players are up to.

But I think you should just hold out for 7.3 unless your prepared to
try the beta. It's pretty stable at the moment as it's due for release
sometime around early December.

2008-08-18 Thread oreillymj

I really hope the speakers in this are shielded from mobile phone
interference.

I made the major mistake of buying this http://tinyurl.com/5m48vg

Since I do on-call from work, I need to keep a mobile phone on the
bedside locker, but cannot leave it anywhere near the JBL on-time or
else I get a blast of the mobile's "phone home" chatter in the middle
of the night amplified through the JBL speaker. I have to put the phone
on the other side of the room.

Also the alarm function plays the first song on the iPod. Waking up to
ABBA every morning is not a good way to start the day.

So this looks very tempting.

Re: [slim] PS3 webbrowser and 7.0

The PS3's browser is notoriously flaky. The OS only has 256mb to run in,
and reports of hangs on relatively small pages have been cropping up on
PS3 related forums. I also understand that the Netfront browser's
Javascript engine isn't great, although it has been improved in FW2.20.
For some reason Sony would rather stick to this obscure browser than use
a PPC Firefox port. It's probably due to security. Any bugs in Firefox
are wide open for targeting by hackers, which would open the PS3 to
hackers.

Stick to a PC.

BTW - I think I might have had a similar problem to you.

Whenever my PC went into standby, it would instantly wake again.
I discover that my Intel NIC had another WOL setting called WakeOnLink.
Basically being connected to a router was enough to bring the PC out of
standby. Because any traffic at all directed to the PC will cause the
link activation.

Check the settings in Device Manager->Network Adapters->Your Wired Nic

When you locate your NIC, you maybe have to dig around on some tabs to
find the settings for your card.

802.11G soon after I bought it and has worked well for the last 5+
years.

My SB2 & SB3 were working reliably streaming MP3, but downloads on my
PS3 over wireless were very slow and I got breakups while streaming
DivX to it using Tversity. Also some of the neighbours had got wireless
kit, so it was time to boost my signal ;-)

Anyway, after going MIMO, I noticed an immediate improvement.

I can stream med-def ( > SD, but not 720p) DivX's which I couldn't
before and I can also stream DTS5.1 flacs to the SB3 which I'd given up
on before.

The router itself does a site survey when you switch it on and will
pick the best channel for you. I don't if or how often it might channel
hop. I set the channel manually to what was on my old belkin router to
avoid re-configing devices, but I'm going to give the Auto-channel
setting a test to see how I get on.

The only downside seems to be that MIMO routers don't do bridging, so
the AP I had in the kitchen to boost the signal there is now useless
and the SB2 in kitchen is still only reporting ~50% signal strength.

Re: [slim] SB3 freezes while synchronzied

2008-01-08 Thread oreillymj

Synch has been given a major fix in SC7. There's probably no point in
logging a bug unless you can replicate the problem after upgrading to 7
as the synch fixes are not going to be ported back to 6.5x.

So your choice is to either continue with 6.5 and live with the known
synch problems and wait for the offical 7 release

or

download the 7 nightly and beta test.

I've been running on 7 for months now and I'd say it's due for release
any day now. It's extremely stable.

Most of the ongoing changes are Jive remote related.

By the way, a 700mhz PC with 1Gb is pretty low spec. I'd say 6.5
struggles on this and 7 will as well.
My SqueezeCenter.exe process uses 100Mb Ram and MySql probably another
20Mb.

Re: [slim] WAP Connection(s)

2008-01-07 Thread oreillymj

I have a router and a wap setup using the same SSID in bridging mode.

I wonder if danco's solution would fix my issue where the SB2 switches
from the nearby AP to the original router. In doing so the signal
strength drops from ~90% to 50%.

In MAC filtering, I can specifically deny MAC single addresses, so I
can disable the SB2 from connecting to the router, but it can talk to
the nearby AP.

So I wouldn't have to set up a heap of 'allow' rules for existing
devices & guests, just the single 'deny'

Re: [slim] Any word of SB4?

2008-01-04 Thread oreillymj

Personally, my SB3 is on to play music, not look at the screen.
The VFD with the analog (needle) display is fantastic.

All I'd look for in an SB4 is a bit more horsepower to decode DTS/AC3
converted to Flacs at their highest compression rating.

And more memory to cache more of these files.

Whatever Slim do, they obviously need to keep it reasonably spaced
(product wise) from the Transporter, so they don't cannbalise sales
from the higher end product.

I have an Ipod enabled alarm clock that I would happily dump for a Slim
enabled product. It's a JBL product with the following flaws.
1) The light sensor does not completely switch off the display, so I
sleep with a blue glow on the ceiling all night, wasting power. It
should turn off the display completely after 5-10mins of darkness and
let me use the snooze button to bring it back on.

2) The interaction with the ipod is crap so most mornings, the ipod
just plays the first track alphabetically. ABBA first thing in the
morning, every morning, is not a good vibe. So now I just use the built
in buzzer, like my old alarm clock.

3) I do on-call support and need to keep a mobile beside my bed at
times. My old cheapo Philips alarm clock was immune from the phones
"phone home" signals but the JBL is not, resulting in a loud blast of
noise during the night. So the mobile has to be kept at a distance from
the clock.

Sorry for hogging the thread.

2007-11-29 Thread oreillymj

> It certainly has never been an issue for me and I believe it's not just
> me, the forum would be inundated if it was a universal issue.

Mark,

You're wrong about this. I have raised this issue at least 3 times on
these forums and it has been quietly ignored. There is a bug somewhere
in Slimserver/Squeezecentre that was introduced somewhere in June/July
2006 timeframe.

I reported coming home from being away for 3 days to find music playing
in my house back then. I've been woken up at all hours of the night.

At first it was thought to be caused by a web-spider.
To rule that out, I disabled all port forwarding to Slim related ports
and added firewall rules to my Kerio personal firewall blocking
internet access to Slim related processes.

Still the issue occurs. It's hard to log a bug because

a) It's so intermittent. It could be weeks/months between occurrences.

b) Everyone's network is different to it's hard to know what's
relevant.

c) It's difficult to now what logging might capture this. Also current
SC7 logs don't have timestamps to match events to the time they
occurred.

Re: [slim] Can SB3 decode a DTS signal?

2007-11-03 Thread oreillymj

BTW - if you try playing your flac/DTS files over the analog outs, then
obviously you'll get white noise. You need a digital connection to a
surround amp and here's the important bit.

DO NOT let the server/SB make any changes to the bitstream on it's way
to the amp otherwise the DTS header info get corrupted and the amp does
not know that it is being sent a surround mix.

In practice all this means is switching off the digital volume
control/replaygain so the SB outputs the bitstream exactly the way it
was sent.

There is a known issue with flac files compressed at more than -5 from
what I remember.

The actual CPU in the SB3 struggles to decode the flac fast enough to
keep the playback buffer full.

It looks and seems like a network issue that's cuasing a buffer
underrun, but you'll notice that the display slows to a crawl.

Re: [slim] Scanner.exe crashes when rescanning everything

2007-09-27 Thread oreillymj

It sounds like a corrupt file that the scanner doesn't like or a
shortcut causing a loop, but the Autocommit does sound like a MySQL
issue.

My suggestions.

1) Enable more debug options like d_scan to figure out if the crash
always happens on a certan file/directory.

or

2) Maybe you should delete the MySQl cache and tables and let
Slimserver rebuild everything.

Re: [slim] Feature request: more sophisticated xfade

2007-08-14 Thread oreillymj

I think this discussion has come up several times with no real movement
on it.

Part of the reason for not implementing the Sqtsoft type fading is
mentioned here http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4442
Vote for this bug if you want some movement on it.

Another reason for not doing Sqrsoft x-fading is that in the current
Slimserver model track 2 of a playlist does not start streaming to the
SB until track 1 has finished playing. So you can't overlay the start
of track 2 over the end of track 1 as you don't have the data.

This is a limitation which also impacts syncing IMHO.

Re: [slim] Nokia 770

2007-07-31 Thread oreillymj

I have the N800. Having never used or seen an N770, I can't say how much
faster the newer device is.

Ben's skin is excellent. There are a couple of minor improvements that
would be nice, but it does an excellent job.

The main problem with using the Nxxx as a remote replacement is the
need to leave it on for an extended period so that it's available when
required.
Whereas the Slim Remote is an always-on, instant device, the startup
time of the Nokia is about 1 minute with another minute required to
start the browser, load the home page. none of this is anything Ben can
"fix"

Outside of use as a remote replacement, the web browser is nice. I
haven't used it for Skype or Google talk. Canola looks nice also.

There's lots of other Linux derived freeware, but installation can be
difficult for a non Linux expert. I've tried to install several apps
that have failed due to a library being missing, with no mention of how
to get/install the required file.

However the OS does provide an interface for installing apps that have
been officially "blessed" by Nokia.

I'd disagree that Javascript would make this issue any better or worse.

Editing the N700 skin to do a re-direct leaves the user with a file
that they then have to remember not to overwrite with a nightly or new
release. Once you start implementing work-around's like this, it
becomes a chore to do upgrades.

The ultimate fix is therefore in the hands of the developer just like
it is now.

I understand that flashing the device is risky, but an update from

I've tried it on both my PC & Laptop and neither are able to detect the

Re: [slim] Sansa Connect - internet radio on the go.

Yes startup time. From the time of pushing the power button on the Sansa
to actually being able to listen to music is about 1 minute or more.

Probably more, it's certainly fa slower than even an iPod coming out of

Read through some of the AnythingButiPod forums and you'll discover
that a FW upgrade to improve the situation was due months ago.

Re: [slim] Sansa Connect - internet radio on the go.

2007-06-18 Thread oreillymj

I hate to burst your bubble, but I bought a Sansa E280 thinking it was
"the one" and it's turned out to be the last Sandisk product I'll ever
buy.

It seemed to have everything going for it,8Gb of on board flash memory
+ 2gb expansion slot with a user replacable battery.

But startup times on the thing are appalling and the firmware is
riddled with bugs. Since Sandisk dropped 10% of their staff, firmware
fixes have stopped.

Also since the RIAA seem determined to kill internet radio, I'm not
sure how long that feature will be worthwhile. I'd think very carefully
about buying this product.

Re: [slim] To upgrade or Not to upgrade, that is the question.

2007-06-15 Thread oreillymj

If you decide to upgrade, the first thing I would do is rename you
plugins directory to plugins_old.

A lot of plugins written for version pre 6.5 will have issues, so the
best thing to do is get a vanilla 6.5 install working before adding any
further complexity.

I actually zip up my entire Slimserver directory.

If you know what you're doing you can install 6.5 to a Slimserver65
directroy and leave the old version until you are happy that everything
works correctly, but there is some work involved.

Somehow I can't see the logic here.

On one had the expect Logitech's size/buying power to bring down costs
so cheaper unit's can be produced, while other people are moaning at a
perceived fall in quality in the newer units.

I'm not saying low prices & high quality are mutually exclusive (e.g.
Toyota) but one is normally a function of the other.

This is the third time this has happened in recent months. Even though
my taste in music is excellent;-) ,I'm sure the neighbours don't

My SB2 in the kitchen has never done this.

I've firewalled off my network so the Slimserver web-site is
inaccessable to the outside world.

Both the model/wireless router & firewall on my PC all block off port
9000

Anyone got any ideas why this might be happening?

BTW - This thread mentions WMP11 using port 9000, but I cannot find a
mention of this in the help file or in the list of ports that the
"Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" adds to the Windows

if free.

>From the Twonky FAQ

FAQ Network Config The server ports

The ports used by the server are:
UDP 1030, 1900, 9080
TCP starting at 9000 until a free port is found.

To rule out WMP, go to Start->Run ->Services.msc
Scroll down the list to "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service"
and double click on it. If started, click stop and set the Startup type
to Manual, then click Ok.

Are you running Twonky?

The time zone entry is fine. It's more informational than a warning.
Slimserver works just fine without it.

So it appears you don't have Slim.exe running, but when run from the
command prompt it detects a previously rnning instance.

Very weird.

Try opening a command window. Start->Run->cmd

Cd "C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server"

Type slim.exe -remove
slim.exe -install

Then run slim.exe, see if it stay's running.

Re: [slim] Warning, new firmware killed Squeezebox 2

2007-04-09 Thread oreillymj

I'm not sure what version of the FW Squeezenetwork is pushing down, but
I've upgraded both my SB2 & 3 to the latest FW81 without issue.

When I bought my SB2, it came with FW16, so it's been upgraded >30
times at this stage without ever really having a problem.

Two thing's I would suggest.

1) Unlikely
Try hitting brightness after plugging the SB2 back in, could be that
it's just gone onto the setting which turns the display off.

2) This has happened to me.
The server had the player in a power state of OFF and disregarded all
my attapts to do anything via remote control. I had to go to the Web UI
and select the player, then change the power state to ON.

Just out of interest, does the Web UI still "see" the player that is
dead?

No Windows service will communicate with a mapped drive by it's drive

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-25 Thread oreillymj

If you tell Slimtray to "Automatically run at log in" then the
Slimserver process and associated processes are owned by the currently
logged on user and can be killed much like Unix processes.

If you select "Automically run at system start" then the processes are
started as a service and then they are usually owned by the local
system account or unless the user specifically decides to alter the
logon credentials of service. This is usualy done by owners of external
or mapped drives due to a lmitiation of Windows.

You can however execute the following shell command to specifically
shutdown the Slim MySQL process if started as a service and not affect
any regular MySQL instances a user might have running on their box

net stop SlimServerMySQL

Next step would be to run using perl Slimtray.pl with the reg checks
commented out for a few day to see if it fixes the issue.

However on my system, Slimtray is only using ~10Mb.

Re: [slim] Firmware version

2007-02-22 Thread oreillymj

The firmware and Slimserver software are pretty independent of each
other, but there have been times in the past where a FW upgrade
depended on a certain version of the Server software being present.

e.g I think FW54 or later requires SS6.5x.

Slim recommends that users upgrade Server software and FW together as
they are tested as a unit. It would involve too much work to test
server upgrades for compatibility with several older FW version.
Similarly, Slim don't go back and update 6.2 or 6.3 to work with the
current FW as well as the version bundled with the release.

So if you upgrade to 6.5 the FW will automatically bee updated.
If you go back to 6.2 or 6.3 you'll be prompted to downgrade.

You can edit the squeezebox2.version file in C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Firmware to avoid a downgrade, but you won't
get any support if your system breaks.

[slim] Starane "banging/thumping" noise from SB

2007-02-19 Thread oreillymj

Hi

This issue has been reported intermittently in the past. I know Sean
has been trying to reproduce the issue but hasn't had enough data to
work on.

So here's what happened to me yesterday morning.

I was planning to replace 2 light switches with dimmers. Since I didn't
know what fuse to throw to cut power to the light circuit, I knew I'd
have to try a few.

I shutdown my PC/Slimserver to avoid data loss.

I then started throwing fuses. When I got to the fuse for the
downstairs sockets, I put the fuse down/up in about the space of 1
second. I then heard this almighty racket from the front room. It
sounded like a kango hammer. A low bass thump.
I realised it was from the SB3, and it being 8:00am on a Sunday morning
with my wife asleep upstairs, I quickly pulled the toslink cable from
the back of the unit.

I then cycled the power and everything went back to normal.
My unit in the kitchen was fine. I can only assume that the power surge
when I threw the fuse caused some sort of glitch.

The SB was behaving normally except for the noise it was emitting. It
was in the process of looking for the server (which was still off) like
it would normally do after a power cycle.

I could probably do this a hundred times with no issue.

BTW I'm on 240V in Europe. The SB is on the same main outlet as my DVD
player, surround reciever and plasma TV.

Re: [slim] Wake on LAN and bridged networks

2007-02-13 Thread oreillymj

Not sure if I fully understand your exact setup, but have you tried the
following.

Use a static I.P. on your Squeezebox and set the Mac Mini as the Def
Gateway. I would expect the magic packets to be sent to the Def.
Gateway for routing and since that's what you're trying to wake, should
work.

...or if you're print server server port forwarding, setup a virtual
server redirecting all UDP port 9 traffic to the static I.P. of the Mac
Mini. That would guearentee that any WOL packets broadcast on the
network get redirected by the router to the Mac Mini's I.P.

AFAIK, the lan card is still kept active (it has to be to "hear" the
WOL packets) when the system is asleep, so a router with a machine in
standby attached still "see's" that port as active and will not forget
the routing information associated with that port.

Re: [slim] Wireless bridge question

2007-02-13 Thread oreillymj

I remember having a problem with a Netgear wireless bridge I bought for
linking my PS2 to my network.

The bridge couldn't connect to the network initially with WEP enabled,
but if I disabled WEP it worked, then set it to 64bit WEP, and still
worked, then 128bit still worked.

I just figured that it was something to do with settings corruption.
Reported it to both Netgear & Belkin, but go no answer from either.

With a few wireless components around the house, it's a pain to visit
each one changing channels, keys etc.. when testing these sort of
issues.

I was lucky enough to be able to run with WEP disabled until about 6
months ago when I found the neighbours sponging off my connection.

pretty lean and goes from standy to ready in <10 seconds.

Look's like your Celeron just isn't starting as fast as it did.
Part of that might be down to 6.5. It uses about 80Mb on my system and
is the biggest consumer of memory aside from Firefox.
Then, there's also the myslqd process which uses about another 16mb.

You didn't say how much memory your system has and what OS your using.

Re: [slim] Error Code 5 during 6.5.1 Setup

2007-02-05 Thread oreillymj

Actually, if you go go into the Windows services applet
(Start->Run->Services.msc) you'll see that you can stop the Slimserver
MySQL instance.

It's cleaner than killing the process as the database shuts down
correctly.

Shutting down the the Slimserver process usually stops the MySQL
process. But it doesn't always seem to shut down.

Re: [slim] Slim splits CD into 2 or more Albums

2007-02-01 Thread oreillymj

I opened a bug some time ago for this issue. Although the circumstances
triggering the bug might be a little different.

In my case, the same album by the same artist split over 2 dirs in the
file system result in 2 album entries. Also updating 1 track within an
album and hitting "Look for new..." resulted in that track getting
split off into it's own album.

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4380

There is another thread discussing the issue here

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30555

I haven't noticed the problem in some time, but I'm not sure anything
was done to scanner to fix it.

[slim] Re: Slimserver won't start automatically

2007-01-28 Thread oreillymj

Have you perhaps installed a nightly and not done full install from a
setup.exe.

For some reason the nightlies have never included a file called
"SlimServer Web Interface.url" in C:\Program Files\SlimServer

To create this file, open the Web UI in Internet Explorer. Then select
File->Send->Shortcut to Desktop.

Now rename the shortcut to SlimServer Web Interface and move to the
Slimserver directory.

[slim] Re: stopping and restarting the slim server

2007-01-28 Thread oreillymj

Using Slimtray, stop Slimserver.
Then click on SlimTray again and select "Automatically run at system
start"

Now click on Start Slimserver and you'll see that the service starts
up.

[slim] Re: SB3 rebooting very frequently

2007-01-27 Thread oreillymj

I'm wondering if you have any tracks that iTunes has embedded cover art
images into.
I don't think I've ever had an SB2/3 reboot on me before today when I
was playing back a track with embedded cover art.
