OK, I figured it out. Seems the podcast plugin has been changed, and it
no longer reads from the podcast tab. I have to go onto the logitech
site to update my podcasts.

I have just updated my squeezebox server, and whilst the Podcasts tab in
the server settings show my podcast list, on my Squeezbox 2, they show
just the three default entries. How do I fix this?

Yes your right, you could select a playlist, and not a specific track,
but you could put your track into a playlist.

 * whether you have mysql present on Gentoo already, and if so, what
 version

4.1.21

 * whether you're expecting to use that existing instance, or the one

Left it as is for now. I asked in another thread if it was better to
use my existing mysql to save on recourses.

Probably a longer snip from the log might be useful - run the server
with --d_import --d_server --d_mysql --d_sql so that it logs some
 more useful stuff.

Keep it simple, and modular I say.

For me:

1 Scroll wheel in the remote (like in a mouse)

3 Proper Geekport with a relay output for amplifiers.
Maybe a serial interface for addon modules, like room temperature

I doubt you will hear anything other than speculation as to what's
coming next. It's not really in Slims interest to talk about RD.
Doing so will slow sales of existing units, and also give the
competition some insight as to whats in the pipeline, which can hurt a
small company. Personally I would like them to concentrate on improving
their existing design, and keep the costs low. I don't really like the
idea of integrated speakers, unless they can be optionally slotted onto
the side, or something. Keep it modular I say.

[slim] Re: Possible Enhancement - (slight) support formultiplefile format music libraries

2005-12-13 Thread stuorguk

Slimserver treats all media under one set of rules, where in fact there
are different requirements not only for the client device being used,
but also types of media. Music, speech, audio books etc. You wouldn’t
want crossfading on an audio book, but you might if your listening to a
random selection of tracks.

For me, I like to use the Random plugin, but it annoyingly plays the
odd chapter of my girlfriends Harry potter book! I would rather audio
books were excluded from the music scan, and played only through Browse
Folder.

How about an apache style per-directory file directive? (like
.htaccess)

You could drop in a special file, that tells slimserver how to behave
in that, and all subsequent sub-directories.

I figured the highest risk of data loss for me, was HD failure.

So I put all my audio files on a RAID1 Linux box, in the attic (out of
sight from thieves). Doesn't cover me from a virus deleting all my

RAID1 on Linux was easy to set up - just 2 IDE drives of the same size

Alternatively, pick up an old Pentium computer, and use that. My old
dual celeron server pulled on average just 56 watts, and that was with
4 hard drives installed. So a single processor, with one HD should be
a lot less! Couple that with Wake-On-Lan, and the yearly power
consumption will be very low.

I'm now using an old dual PIII (2x1Ghz) linux box, with RAID1, and it
uses 1.77Kw a day. Don't assume a computer with a 300w PSU is going to
draw anything like that.

[slim] Re: Backup: REV drive or external HD?

2005-08-24 Thread stuorguk

I use a RAID1 setup on Linux. Just plug in a second HardDisk with a
partition of equal size of your audio drive, and mount the pair of them
as Raid1. Everything is then mirrored, and if one drive fails, I get an
e-mail to tell me so. Surprisingly easy to set up too.

Doesn't cover you from fire, theft or accidental deletion, but it
lowers the risk of having to re-rip everything again, and if one drive
does fail, it buys you a bit of time to sort it out without any
downtime.

[slim] Slimserver eating my memory.

2005-08-23 Thread stuorguk

I could no longer see the tracks in Browse Music on my SB. Just the
artists, and album names. Yet I could select an album, and it would
play all the tracks. So I attempted to do a rescan, and my Gentoo
Linux box became so unresponsive, I couldn't even shut it down. When I
restart slimserver, the memory usage goes through the roof (768MB Ram),
and all my swap space gets used up, then everything dies again.

I also see this looping in the console

Code:

Yes, it's true an external firewall wont catch outbound traffic, but
there are two problems with personal firewalls. Firstly they give you
a false sense of security - they are easily bypassed. Secondly, it's
another internet service begging to be attacked, potentially making
your system LESS secure!

Worth reading up on them

On your previous setup, you mention USB access point. Does that mean,

Have you got a software firewall (such as the one built in to XP)

[slim] Fast forward Rewind

2005-06-21 Thread stuorguk

I find the Fast forward Rewind rather slow, and unintuitive. I was
thinking about how this could be improved.

As an optional alternative, how about the following:

Rather than playing in stepped intervals while it scans, how about just
visually indicating where in the file you are on a full screen
barograph. When you hold down the FF/RW button, the Barograph moves up
(or down), first starting slow, then accelerating. The moment you
release the FF/RW button, playback resumes from the new position.

What do other people think?

[slim] Re: Slimserver Unusable Again

2005-06-20 Thread stuorguk

I recently upgraded from SB1 to an SB2. I was suffering a lot of the
same problems with the SB1 disconnecting whilst browsing. SB2 seems
much better. One of the reasons I upgraded, was that I listen to a lot
of mp2 files recorded from Digital Radio. My SB1 wouldn’t play the
files, unless I played the files via MAD Play (something to do with the
way broadcast mp2's are encoded). Happily, the SB2 (which uses MAD),
plays them perfectly. However, when I hit play, there is about a 10
second delay before anything happens. Don't know if it's related, but
its very frustrating.

I have the same problem on my Linux box ever since I upgraded to version
6. V5 was better, but also slow. If I browse my music folder, my
squeezebox regularly looses contact. It's not just ogg files either.

The SB should be running under a separate thread. Surly it shouldn't
be loosing contact, regardless of what slimserver is doing. The most
frustrating thing of all, is if I browse into the wrong directory, then
apon realising my mistake, have to wait for slimserver to catch up
before I can browse back a step - loosing contact for a minute or two
in-between.

I listen to a lot of audio books/radio plays, and I certainly dont want
crossfading for that. I keep all my talk stuff in a sub folder under
my main music library.

The same applies for shuffle play - I like to shuffle my music, but not
my talk shows.

How about having a config text file that can be dropped into a
directory, that informs slimserver how the files are to be played. A
bit like .htaccess files for Apache.

Then you would have to store it in every track. If Shuffle play was
on, you wouldn't know which track would get played first (at least if
your browsing by folder). IMO better to have a single config file,
that can be dropped into a directory that would effect all tracks in
that directory, and it's sub directories, just like with Apache.

In my case, I have a directory called 'Talk', which is where all my
audio books, and radio plays are kept. It would be so neat if I could
drop a single config file into that 'Talk' dir, that would override the
Crossfade and Shuffle to off, from thereon down the directory tree.
