I doubt you will hear anything other than speculation as to what's coming next. It's not really in Slims interest to talk about RD. Slimserver treats all media under one set of rules, where in fact there are different requirements not only for the client device being used, but also types of media. Music, speech, audio books etc. You wouldnt want crossfading on an audio book, but you might if your listening to a random selection of tracks. For me, I like to use the Random plugin, but it annoyingly plays the odd chapter of my girlfriends Harry potter book! I would rather audio books were excluded from the music scan, and played only through Browse Folder. How about an apache style per-directory file directive? Yes, it's true an external firewall wont catch outbound traffic, but there are two problems with personal firewalls. Firstly they give you a false sense of security - they are easily bypassed. Secondly, it's another internet service begging to be attacked, potentially making your system LESS secure! On your previous setup, you mention USB access point. Does that mean, your SB was connecting to your server via the USB socket (wirlessly), and now your going though your network card? Have you got a software firewall (such as the one built in to XP) running on your server? I have been using a WRT54G for well over a year with no problems (wireless or wired). Which WRT54G firmware are you using? You could try one of the alternative firmware versions. [slim] Fast forward Rewind
I find the Fast forward Rewind rather slow, and unintuitive. I was thinking about how this could be improved. As an optional alternative, how about the following: Rather than playing in stepped intervals while it scans, how about just visually indicating where in the file you are on a full screen barograph. When you hold down the FF/RW button, the Barograph moves up (or down), first starting slow, then accelerating. The moment you release the FF/RW button, playback resumes from the new position. [slim] Re: Slimserver Unusable Again
I recently upgraded from SB1 to an SB2. I was suffering a lot of the same problems with the SB1 disconnecting whilst browsing. SB2 seems much better. One of the reasons I upgraded, was that I listen to a lot of mp2 files recorded from Digital Radio. My SB1 wouldnt play the files, unless I played the files via MAD Play (something to do with the way broadcast mp2's are encoded). Happily, the SB2 (which uses MAD), plays them perfectly. However, when I hit play, there is about a 10 second delay before anything happens. Don't know if it's related, but its very frustrating. [slim] Re: Sox using inordinate amount of CPU
I have the same problem on my Linux box ever since I upgraded to version 6. V5 was better, but also slow. If I browse my music folder, my squeezebox regularly looses contact. It's not just ogg files either. The SB should be running under a separate thread. Surly it shouldn't be loosing contact, regardless of what slimserver is doing. The most frustrating thing of all, is if I browse into the wrong directory, then apon realising my mistake, have to wait for slimserver to catch up before I can browse back a step - loosing contact for a minute or two in-between. [slim] Re: Turning Crossfade on and off
I listen to a lot of audio books/radio plays, and I certainly dont want crossfading for that. I keep all my talk stuff in a sub folder under my main music library. The same applies for shuffle play - I like to shuffle my music, but not my talk shows. How about having a config text file that can be dropped into a directory, that informs slimserver how the files are to be played. A bit like .htaccess files for Apache. -- stuorguk ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

lostboy Wrote: Like the idea - but rather than keep a separate file maybe store the required behaviour per track in meta-data - a tag. Chris Then you would have to store it in every track. If Shuffle play was on, you wouldn't know which track would get played first (at least if your browsing by folder). IMO better to have a single config file, that can be dropped into a directory that would effect all tracks in that directory, and it's sub directories, just like with Apache. In my case, I have a directory called 'Talk', which is where all my audio books, and radio plays are kept. It would be so neat if I could drop a single config file into that 'Talk' dir, that would override the Crossfade and Shuffle to off, from thereon down the directory tree. -- stuorguk ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
