Re: [slim] New To Podcasts - Some help/insights?
Take a look at the TuneIn app that is already built in to LMS. There is a listing for Podcasts and a whole host of different ones to get you started. Also, if you use an iphone or ipad you can install the airplay plugin and airplay any podcasts you find online directly to the squeezebox if you just want to listen. Finally, i think the latest version of Spotty has access to their catalog of podcasts but you have to subscribe to Spotify. I have not tried this functionality yet. The podcasts functionality in LMS has always been my least favorite of the squeezebox experience but fortunately there are enough workarounds that I never bother trying to get it to work. usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111585 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Another yesr
I think the most profitable way for Logitech to get back in this business would be to market a customized LMS to manufacturers and sell it as a protocol or ecosystem. In the same way that Google licenses the Chromecast protocol or Apple licenses airplay, I think that LMS could be made to run like an app on a device like an AVR. We have already seen that you don't need very powerful hardware to run LMS so they could incorporate this customized server in a number of devices so they don't have to be concerned about the general public not setting it up properly. The user could then connect via a smartphone or tablet app, point it to their shared local music, input their streaming music credentials and be off and running. I would think playback devices like a wifi speaker or soundbar could be manufactured to include the necessary hardware to run squeezelite or another client software to act as a new Squeezebox device. Back when desktops were almost required to run the system I can see how this would not be possible but now that cheap single board computers have proven to be more than enough I would think it would be very possible. Re: [slim] What to do
I have not used this amp but have been doing some research for a similar application. I was suggesting get additional dots and plug them directly into the multi-room amplifier with the name of the zone or room. You would then use the dots in the rooms to tell Alexa to play the music in each room through the speakers: "master bedroom" dot ->multiroom amp->master bedroom speakers "living room" dot ->multiroom amp->living room speakers "kitchen" dot ->multiroom amp->kitchen speakers Squeezebox Duet ->multiroom amp "PA" input->all speakers This way you can tell Alexa from any of the other echo devices to "play Pandora in master bedroom" and it would only play music through your dot named "master bedroom". I believe you should be able to use the volume control built into Alexa directly so the keypads would not be required at all. The keypads would be convenient hardware controls in each zone but it looks like you could get the same functionality using this app and the required wifi to RS232 adapter https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/monoprice-whole-home-audio/id1168858624?mt=8 usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108806 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What to do
Since all of your speakers are wired to a central closet I would get a multizone amplifier like this one: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=10761 to power your speakers and provide inputs. I would then get an echo dot for each room to act as a source and name it for the room you want music to play in. This way you can tell Alexa to "play Pandora in the master bedroom" and Alexa would start the Pandora stream via your echo dot named "master bedroom" and output through your master bedroom speakers. Finally, I would setup the Shairplay2W plugin on your LMS and plug your Duet receiver into another input on the amp so that you could airplay whatever services are not available through Alexa (like Apple Music) from your iPhone to the room you want to listen in. ---- usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108806 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] The Automation of Selling Out
I used to use Spotify as a "try before you buy" kind of service but now I feel foolish for buying an album when for all intents and purposes I have all the access to it I need with the Spotify subscription. I had to really take a hard look at how I listen to music and also accept that I cannot tell the difference between my lossless ripped FLAC collection vs. the 320 kbps OGG files that Spotify serves up on my stereo systems. If Spotify would allow me to upload all of the live concerts I enjoy listening to and could play them back gaplessly then I would only use that service as it would meet all of my needs. I do miss the old feelings of serendipity that came with digging through the used CD bin at my favorite record store and finding some music I wasn't expecting or being turned on to a new band by my favorite dj or buddy that I knew also had good taste in music. Something about that process was rewarding in a way that a Spotify recommendation just cannot come close to matching. I also find I don't give a new album a real chance to grow on me since I have made no financial commitment beyond my monthly subscription. ---- usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108382 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The closest I have seen to that is creating a Pandora station of current and classic artists. Supposedly the Slacker stations are programmed by people as opposed to algorithms. I use Slacker a lot and have noticed similar behavior. I attributed a lot of it to a flaky Squeezebox radio that I have but it sounds like the problem may also lie with Slacker. The cover art consistently either doesn't show up or only shows for one or two songs. I have also had the issue where it "cannot fetch the next song" and will stop playing. When you add it on mysqueezebox.com you will also be prompted for your Spotify credentials. Put those in and save them and you should then be good to go. Re: [slim] Chromecast Audio ideal for Squeezebox replacement hardware?
I'm not sure how much I will be relying on the Chromecast in my music listening. I was pretty excited to get mine a few days ago and after playing with it the last few days I much prefer the centralization and organization of the squeezebox system. I switch between my radio favorites, slacker favorites, local music and spotify quite frequently during the course of a day (I work from home with music on constantly) and while doable on the Chromecast it is not as elegant as using Ipeng to control my squeezebox. Also, I have yet to find a solution for local music playback (with IOS) that is acceptable. Right now the only real way I have seen is with Plex and the lack of gapless playback is not acceptable to me. It seems like right now Android users have an advantage if using the method that Markbrauer described in post #39 but for IOS users things are pretty clunky. I am thankful to have a cheap way to add music services to my various listening areas but will stick with Squeezebox for everything else. usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104383 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It is comforting for me to know that when mysqueezebox.com goes away I will easily be able to continue listening to most of the music services I enjoy now. I plan on experimenting with the UPnPBridge plugin to see if it will allow LMS to play my local music to it. Hopefully with Google's resources they can nail multi-room sync (which we know is not easy) and this will really be a low cost alternative or partner with our beloved squeezebox. If so then you can use the Xsqueeze addon which looks pretty nice and includes a squeezelite player: 18503 It will work on both the raspberry pi as well as windows machines. I used it for a bit but had trouble with the sound quality on the pi but since I have no linux skills I couldn't make the suggested changes to correct my problem. You should have a look at the Kodi forums for more info: http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:XSqueeze In addition, you could try running the Soundicity controller on your windows machine controlling an instance of squeezelite running on the same machine. Soundicity also looks very nice though it is designed for tablets and phones. My personal favorite controller GUI is Ipeng but as of now it only runs on iphones and ipads. I am anxious to see what Pippin does once Apple finally opens up the Apple TV to apps (hint, hint Pippin if you are reading this). Good luck and let us know what you go with. +---+ |Filename: XSqueezeNowPlaying.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=18503| +---+ usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104088 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Is Bluetooth streaming to Squeezebox possible?
You can use the UPNP/DLNA plugin and turn LMS into a renderer. You would then use BubbleUpnp on your android as a streamer to stream the audio from your phone to LMS to your squeezeboxes. Another guy did the same thing here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?103478-How-can-I-stream-music-from-a-smartphone-or-a-pc/page2 usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103741 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Time to Buy Back the Assets
I have already told my wife that if we ever win the lottery that I would want to buy the Squeezebox name and rights from Logitech so I would have something to do with my time. With the power of the tiniest computers - like the Raspberry Pi - now sufficient to power the server and players it seems that it should be possible to streamline the Squeezebox experience to run on just about anything. I even wonder if it would be possible to deploy Squeezebox as a service similar to Spotify Connect or Google Cast. LG and Sony just recently announced their new speakers and receivers would have Google Cast built in so I imagine if Logitech had been smart they could have licensed the Squeezebox server/player to easily be incorporated directly into receivers, speakers etc. Of course I don't have a technical background so I could be completely off base but if I were in charge that is what I would have tried to do before flushing this great system down the toilet. usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103515 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Current performance of ALAC?
I am using an Atom powered Win 7 nettop to host my LMS. I have been ripping to FLAC for years but would now like to use ALAC since I have just bought a Mac and Itunes is so dead simple to rip and tag with on the Mac. I have two radios, a classic, a boom and pogoplug running squeezelite in my Squeezebox family I would like to play these ALAC files with. Will my Atom powered nettop have enough grunt to transcode the ALAC files easily or should I learn how to rip to FLAC on my Mac and forget ALAC? usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=99146 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Current performance of ALAC?
Thank you both for the reply. Glad to hear my little nettop should be able to get the job done. I am considering using Itunes to rip since I am tired of maintaining two libraries. I guess the first time I hear any issues with the files I might change my mind but as of now the convenience factor of maintaining just one library will likely win out. usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=99146 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform
erland wrote: Just to make sure I understand you properly. - Do you want to upload your music to a cloud server ? or - Do you just want to extend your local music library with music from online streaming services ? If you really want to upload your music to a cloud server, what's the reason ? Do you want to have it accessible outside the home or are you just looking for a solution without a need to have a computer powered or is it something else ? I would like to upload my music to the cloud to have access to it without running a local server as well as having another backup. Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like your product will act as some kind of portal for music services that can be accessed by Squeezebox as well as other platforms running ickstream? If that's the case then access to my own library in addition to the internet music services within the same environment would be fantastic. This is part of the reason I enjoy the squeezebox so much - my music, internet radio, pandora and spotify all available with a few taps on my iphone running ipeng. Access outside the home would be the cherry on top but I understand it is possible currently with LMS and Ipeng playback and I still haven't bothered to set that up yet. usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98467 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform
I am very excited for what you guys have in mind for ickstream. The functionality I am most hopeful for is what I am sure you guys are addressing head-on, specifically integration with google music or Amazon's music locker. I have yet to upload my music to the cloud yet and will choose my cloud provider when I can most easily integrate the cloud service with my existing music listening setup. Hopefully, Ickstream will provide that ease of integration. I hope you guys are able to navigate the pitfalls involved with multi-region licensing and getting the online services to play ball. Two more quick wishes - please change the name as it hurts these american ears and finally, if Apple ever opens up the AppleTV to third party apps, Pippen agrees to release a version of Ipeng Playback for it regardless of how busy he is with Ickstream! usc95's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59694 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98467 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
