Re: [slim] Does Anyone Have a Slimdevice for Sale?

2022-12-16 Thread yeomanspc

I feel I need to defend the Duets - I have had 4 since they were first
available and they never missed a beat other than on 2 occasions I had
to set them up again. Mine are all wired now (not Wi-Fi). I have 3
Touch’s and had a screen fail on one (Logitech replaced the player foc
but I’d be more wary of a 2nd hand Touch than a Duet/receiver. But if I
was buying now, I’d get a Pi for a player and use IPeng or similar as
controller. Keep looking for a touch if that’s what you want- they do
come up occasionally.

Re: [slim] NAS + Squeezebox + Plex

2022-11-28 Thread yeomanspc

Plex and LMS run on pretty much everything, so it comes down to how much
time you have to build. I run a QNAP for plex and LMS with 90TB of
‘stuff’. The QLMS package runs 8.3 fine.

You suggest you want off-site listening - whatever your NAS, do not
expose ports to web, or you will one day find it all encrypted - use a
private VPN for remote access. Sorry if that’s obvious but a lot get
caught out by leaving UPNP active.

This might get you round the dyndns issue, but you still have to have an
open port to your squeezebox server, and there-in lies the problem,
because you are open to all the script kiddies in Russia and Asia trying
to find open ports to go probe /steal or mess with your music and
anything else they can. Maybe you leave your front door open at night
too, but I wouldn’t. Private VPN or local server are the only solutions
worth considering.

Been in the same situation. In all honesty, you are better getting a
Rpi with a USB drive for your music - and plug that into the network at

[slim] Registering / de-registering devices - Michael H please read.

2017-09-25 Thread yeomanspc

Having a sort through storage, I found 2 brand new touch players
(unopened) and a radio. I'd forgotten that I stocked up on players a
few years back to make sure I had a lifetime supply! (I probably need
not have bothered because the players seem to last forever (sill got a
Slimp3 in the garage). Should I be powering these on and registering
them / updating firmware? If MSB.com goes away, will I still be able to
initialize them?

I also found a SB Classic (2) that a pal gave to me a while back when he
moved over to Sonos. It seems to work ok, but is registered to his
account which he has long since forgotten about. Is it possible to get
the player de-registered? MAC is 00:04:20:12:2D:7C.

You need the Pi (make sure to get the latest beefed up version). I've
seen special offers for these as low as 15 ukp.
Ideally a box/case to put it in (plenty on amazon).
A charger (USB) - go for a 2amp or more (so it can power the Pi and a
hard disk). And a Mini usb cable.
1 SD memory card - suggest 8gb min, probably best to go for 16gb - to
store the OS on.
Storage for any local music you might have. I prefer Msata because that
is silent and small (no spinning disk, but it's hugely expensive), so
maybe just buy a 2.5 hard drive and a USB caddy. or if no local music,
then do not bother. if less then 56gb of your own music, buy a 64gb SD
card for the operating system and store it on that. Or a USB thumb
drive.
That's it. Download squeezeplug for pi, install (per instructions), and
job done. 1 silent, no bother LMS server. Pop it next to your router in
a cupboard and forget.. Squeezeplug has the ability to share the
storage networked to windows, so you really never need to go touch it -
you can copy music to it and maintain it all from your pc over the
network.

Mine seem to run for months without any intervention. It's a music
serving appliance.

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago with z100. I found all the

NY. I just tried from the uk and the list that was served up was
missing z100. What I don't know is whether it was omitted from the list
because it is geo-restricted or whether they have hidden it. I'll take
a peek later (vpn to the us) and see. Will also post the iheart url
here when I get back to my PC.

Copy this to the URL (in the web control) and then save as a favourite.
it works for me.

Re: [slim] Alternative to Touch

2014-09-06 Thread yeomanspc

So to get back to your original question re the touch replacement, a lot
of us bought a spare (or more) player. With Michael doing some
excellent work on 7.9, and having looked round at a lot of players, I
conclude that there is nothing around today to replace all that the
Squeezebox environment does, and that whatever comes along it is
unlikely to last the 12+ years that Squeezebox has. Many on here
(myself included) have future-proofed and you could do the same. I
expect to be using the Squeeze system in 10 years - how many tech system
last that long now? When my Logitech hardware dies I have tried
Raspberry Pi with the HIFiBerry cards, the Odroid, the Wandboard
(mentioned above) as excellent headless players which when combined with
Ipeng or other tablet controllers provide function that is fine, and a
fraction of the cost of Sonos etc. I am not concerned about hardware.
I moved the server to the NAS so no longer need a windows PC, and for
spare server I have an Odroid which absolutely flies. The only faint
worry is MySqueezeboxServer.com which has to be pulled eventually, but I
am sure we'll work round that (a lot of progress already). IMHO,
Logitech couldn't make this pay because it was so darned good and had
insufficient levers to force users to keep upgrading the hardware that
the business was flawed. It's too open, but that's your protection too.

BTW, bad files / tags etc. will mess up other systems also :-)

[slim] Don't forget to CANCEL your LastFM subscription

then when they send me a note confirming they are terminating the music

[slim] SB2 on continuous reboot - timout on searching for LMS?

2014-03-14 Thread yeomanspc

I still have 3 SB2 devices in remote corners of the house (workshop,
garage etc.) - great for what they do. I have been having (for quite
some time now) occasional problems with getting them to connect to LMS.
They power up, prompt for setup network, pick up an IP address (either
DHCP or Manual), and then they fail when looking for a LMS server -
re-starting the boot cycle.

I have 2 - 3 LMS servers, and the problems seem to happen if the LMS
that the SB2 was attached to is stopped for some reason. Occasionally
it might pick up a server, but 9+ times out of 10 it re-boots within
about 2 seconds. I'm wondering if there is a timing problem where it's
not waiting long enough. Servers are QNAP x70 pro, Network is Gigabit,
LMS is 7.8.0-1386246861 (also occasional windows server) - but it
happens with all versions for a while now. PSU's are new. If I look at
settings then it still has the IP of the LMS that it was last connected
to. I reset the device by pressing the power button for 5 seconds. I
have tried manual configure and auto, but the same result is that as
soon as it goes off looking for a slimserver, it barfs. The only slight
difference is that on manual configure I might get a glimpse of a LMS
before the reboot.

I also have a SLIMP3 and that is fine because you can manually enter the
LMS address on startup.

Final point - if I turn all but one LMS off on the network, and setup
the squeezebox then when it goes looking for a server it will flash the
server name before rebooting. If I press the right button just
before/when it flashes then it still re-boots, but it will have stored
the server IP correctly and will come up ok next time.

Ideas anyone? SB2 firmware is 40. I'm wondering if there is a CLI
issue between latest LMS and the SB2 setup (assuming it is using CLI).

[slim] Moved music folder - how to tell iTunes?

2014-01-21 Thread yeomanspc

I moved my music folder to my NAS a while back. All is well from a
Squeeze standpoint. However, I was running Itunes on my PC with music
on the PC. So now iTunes cannot find the music.

If I re-load my library using iTunes, then it will also want to re-copy
all my music to my Ipods. Bad idea..

I found that the music location is defined in the iTunes Music
Library.xml file, so changed the path statements in all of those, but
this does not fix it. All of the web searches yield solutions to get
iTunes to move the music, or to move the library loacation, whereas what
I need to do update the iTunes libray with the new pointers.

There is a file called iTunes Library.itl which is an iTunes database
file, and I suspect is created from the xml file. I am sure some other
forum members must have had the same issue, so any advice would be
welcomed.

Re: [slim] Moved music folder - how to tell iTunes?

2014-01-21 Thread yeomanspc

Yes, you can tell it where the library is, but if the music files are
not stored in the iTunes library (there is no way i would let iTunes
manage my music files/tags/structure) then the library basically just
has a pointer to the physical location of the music file (this is an
entry for each and every music file). This is in addition to a lot for
metadata about each music track. So.. I am not moving the iTunes
library, but I have moved the music which the itunes library records
point to.

I have discovered that the .itl file appears to be the master, and that
it creates the xml file when itunes loads - so changing the xml file
with a different location is futile because it just creates a new one at
the next startup..

Re: [slim] Musicip on QNAS loads ok, then terminates

2013-12-21 Thread yeomanspc

Well I discovered the problem, and in the interest of helping others am
posting here. Thanks to Charles of Spicefly for his troubleshooting
guide
http://www.spicefly.com/article.php?page=spicefly-sugarcube-troubleshooting
The Musicip library and the LMS library have to be specified
_exactly__the same. In LMS, during setup when browsing for the music
folder, I selected Share/Multimedia/Music. It now appears that this is
an Alias, and when SSOTS installs MusicIP, it uses the full path which
is Share/MD0_DATA/Multimedia/Music. Thus when LMS checks if the album
or track is in MusicIP, it does not find the path and therefore does not
offer the Create MusicIP Mix option. I went into LMS settings and
changed the library path to be the same as MusicIP, reran the scanner
and it now works.

It's not ideal - I'd have preferred to have MusicIP use the Alias path
(easier and more straightforward), but I can't seem to find where this

Re: [slim] Maximum number of hardware devices that can be synced

2013-12-20 Thread yeomanspc

We used to have a stack of issues with WAP handovers (Netgear WAPs),
then got some cisco WAP 121 access points - initially to address some
issues with Apple connectivity. These devices have some kind of
co-ordination (clustering) so that they communicate with each other (and
single point setup). We get far fewer drop-outs now, especially when
wandering round the house with mobile tablets etc.

Re: [slim] Musicip on QNAS loads ok, then terminates

2013-12-20 Thread yeomanspc

I made some progress - it seems that there was an issue with the MusicIP
cache file - I restored an earlier version and updated and MIP runs now,
but is still not visible from within LMS, and for the life of me I
cannot see why.

I install LMS and MusicIP using SSOTS, and I can go to mynas:10002 and
all looks ok. If I create a Test Mix this works correctly. MIP is on
port 10002. I removed LMS completely, and reloaded LMS 7.8 (Logitech
Media Server Version: 7.8.0 - 1386246861 @ Sat Dec 7 19:17:56) and
MusicIP as the only additional plugin. I can see MIP is configure on
port 10002 in LMS. I run a scan and it runs ok including MIP import
.

Code:

Discovering files/directories: /share/Multimedia/Music (33496 of 33496)
Complete 00:00:54
Scanning new music files: /share/Multimedia/Music (30902 of 30902)
Complete 00:39:10
  Discovering playlists: /share/Multimedia/PLAYLISTS (18 of 18) Complete

Scanning new playlists: /share/Multimedia/PLAYLISTS (16 of 16) Complete

  MusicIP Import (30568 of 30568) Complete 00:02:05
  Pre-caching Artwork (1831 of 1831) Complete 00:03:32
The server has finished scanning your media library.
  Total Time: 00:45:57 (Wednesday, December 18, 2013 / 1:24 AM)

I run LMS debug logging on MusicIP and this has no errors. But 'create
MusicIP mix' never shows on a LMS menu. It's fine on the windows
installation (which points at the same NAS music directory)

Can someone advise what I should check next to do further problem
determination? It's as if LMS does not know MIP is installed..

[slim] Musicip on QNAS loads ok, then terminates

2013-12-14 Thread yeomanspc

I have MIP on 2 x QNAP working just fine on one, and will not stay up on
the other.
Both installs done using SSOTS 4.14 on LMS 7.8.

QNAPs are 569 Pro, and 670 pro (Intel Atom and i7)
On the 670, MIP installs ok, and I can load the server page on port
10002, but as soon as I try to do anything in MIP, it stops working. Is
there a Log that I can go to for information on what is failing? I
suspect it is security related but MIP id is created ok by SSOTS and I
am changing nothing.

I have tried removing MIP, restarting, and re-installing several times,
but no change. Any ideas please?

Re: [slim] MusicIP Mixer server status

2013-11-26 Thread yeomanspc

+1 for using the Windows version, although I do seem to be able to still
get analysis done on my QNAP server using the web interface provided by
Charles of Spicefly. Since I now replicate my music to other servers, I
have started to archive the fingerprints within the MP3 tags, but I also
backup the m3lib file as well. So I run stand-alone and once the
analysis is done it's not so bad. I guess this is the world we will have
to get used to - if Logitech turn off the squeezebox.com servers it will
be the same. Not as easy but we'll manage.
Incidentally, fingerprinting a few hundred tracks usually runs fine
overnight on the server, and as machines get more powerful it will take
less time. If I lost all my fingerprints I'd still have the pc run for
a few weeks to re-do them all again because MusicIP and Sugarcube are
worth it.

lot of music and other than in my car I only play lossless.

I can align with your views as applied to my own situation, but we
already have a squeezebox system, and if you are prepared to go the
wandboard route that probably makes you like the rest of us and a bit
technical. This Bose announcement is exactly what I would have expected
Logitech to do a few years back, and it just demonstrates that Logitech
did not need to pull the plug and (to my mind) completely missed a
fantastic opportunity.

We visited some relatives last week and they had one (yes, one)
Squeezebox 3 which they ran off the laptop. I expressed an interest and
the guy said he was going to buy a Sonos system because it seemed more
capable, less fuss and had a better interface for finding music. He'd
never seen the LMS web interface, nor Ipeng, nor SqueezeComander but was
using the Logitech Android app. 20 minutes later after a quick demo and
offer to give him a R-Pi LMS so he had an always on system, his only
question was where can I get additional players now then to extend it?
The documentation and infrastructure for the non technical on Squeeze
was always lousy and therefore the non-technical were never able to
realise the potential. No doubt Squeeze is far more capable than
anything out there, but it's too hard for most. And to be frank, the
majority would be just fine without plugging it into an amp, and I'll
bet no more than 1% of the market potential either know what a DAC is or
care.

Sonos and Bose are both relatively expensive, but it's nice to see
someone else in the market, and I think they'll do well.

On the rush comment, with the swift removal of anything SB by Logitech

[slim] Would you pay for LMS - Subscription or One-Time?

2012-09-02 Thread yeomanspc

I've seen references to this in other posts (Erland), but nothing
direct, so I wondered..

To my mind, whereas I don't fully understand the logic behind Logitech's
actions, I do understand that something had to change. With low cost
Android and iDevice players able to hang off LMS (and just about
anything else), Logitech had lost the lock-in and the opportunity to
sell a lot more devices.

Software is hugely profitable so why not sell LMS either via an annual
fee, or as a one-time license including a commitment to support for x
years? New players could come with 2 years subscription. There is
clearly demand for players out there (the channel is drying up rapidly).
It's always seemed dumb to me that SBS/LMS was free and increasingly so
of late. A lot of people resent paying for software but I don't see the
issue, and if enough of us are prepared to pay for LMS then it could
still survive and make Logitech some money.

There are plenty of subscription models that they could implement too -
even down to charging a few dollars a year for each player (or emulated
player) that is attached to MSB.com (thus protecting my investment in
older technology and giving them a regular income to keep MSB.com
alive).

2012-08-31 Thread yeomanspc

I have only had one unit fail in 10 years, and that was a Touch that was
in my conservatory which gets warm in summer, so heat is the killer.
Even then, it was only the display that broke so the unit still played
music. I've had to replace quite a few PSU's, but these are easy to
come by and I usually replace with more robust ones.

I guess the obvious is to unplug the player if it is not going to be
used for long periods (say a week) but I would not unplug if I used
daily because that just creates more thermal expansion stress from
heating up and cooling down.

Setting the 'powered off' screen saver to blank, and dimming the display
whenever you can will help.

The new A300 has a very clever 'jukebox' feature where it downloads

As a video player there is nothing out there to touch them for format

[slim] Touch Server vs. remote access to LMS Synch.

My daughter has a Touch which she uses from her apartment remotely back
to my LMS - so che can use MIP etc. and the advanced features of LMS
without the hassle of maintaining a server(although all the music is on
a USB drive and it works fine with Touch Server). Now she wants a radio
too. I have a couple of questions..

1. What happens if you have 2 players synced remotely? Does LMS
transmit 2 streams. Is this going to be unsynched by the time it gets
over the net?

2. Can TinySB support more than just itself as a player (i.e. would it
serve music to the radio - I appreciate she'd lose MIP function etc.)

Apologies if the answers are obvious - I should know better.

Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices

2011-12-12 Thread yeomanspc

To be fair to Logitech, it must be hard to please everyone - even I find
that one week I have one opinion on what kind of player / message they
should push, and then that changes a few weeks later. People claim the
duet is a disaster and I am inclined to agree except that since I got
an ipad and installed ipeng, suddenly I'm thinking that receivers
hidden away are actually quite good and maybe Logitech should be
pushing that more as a way to grow out of the main music room and into
the rest of the house (isn't that similar to Sonos?). If they want
hardware volumes, it's easier to sell an extra 2 or 3 players to
existing customers rather than attract new customers. The controller
was (and remains) the weakness in the Duet combo. The touch is ok but
it's not going to spread beyond 1 or 2 per house unless the price
drops. The VFD devices were my preference till I started with ipeng,
but now I'm tempted to churn my SB2's for receivers (if only I could
find them at reasonable price).

Is it me, or have Logitech meandered on strategy? Suddenly they appear
to be thinning the range down - either we are about to see the lot drop
off a cliff, or some new boxes and direction have to come after
Christmas (maybe at CES?).

likely to use that than the button updates anyway.

[slim] Presets and Trackstat

2011-12-02 Thread yeomanspc

As I understand it, presets work by pressing and holding one of buttons
1-6 for more than 5 seconds to set the shortcut, and the preset can be
recalled by pressing and holding button 1-6 for 1 second. I'm getting
SB radio for my wife (part of the attraction is the presets for
favorite radio stations - simple UI).

However, I also have trackstat installed (required by Spicefly
sugarcube) so now when I press and hold one of buttons 1-6, I get the
trackstat setting. Does this mean that when I install the SBRadio, the
preset buttons will not work as designed? If so, is there a way round
this? I only have rackstat installed because Sugarcube pre-reqs it.

I've seen suggestions that you don't need presets and favorites, but
the simpicity of presets makes them attractive for someone who does not
want to start delving through menus.

Re: [slim] Refresh iTunes library?

2011-12-01 Thread yeomanspc

I think I fixed it thanks. Car is a Merc, USB is limited to 2k tracks
and clunky on how it manages directories etc. VW is easier - it
supports hard drives and good interface. On a Merc, either you limit
yourself to constantly managing what you want to listen to, or manage
an IPOD.

But, FWIW, I found a link to ITLU and this seems to do the trick. For
other users thinking of trying this, the instructions on the web look
limited so it's hard to understand what it is doing under the covers.
No worries - when you install it, you get a decent set of documentation
which explains all.

I've run this a couple of times now and it works a treat!

[slim] Refresh iTunes library?

2011-11-30 Thread yeomanspc

After years of resistance, my new car really only supports IPod as a
usable music storage device so I gave in and bought an iPod and
installed iTunes. Ugh! It kinda works - I imported my music directory
into iTunes library without actually having to import the music, and
then used iTunes to sync to the iPod. I would never use iTunes to
manage my real library, but have just re-organised a load of
directories and tags - generally moved stuff around and renamed a lot
of tracks as a result of cleaning tags. The problem now is that
although I can re-run add folder to library - all that does is add
new entries for the revised file names - there appears to be no way to
remove library entries for file names that no longer exist! I'm
looking for an iTunes equivalent of MIP's refresh tracks function.
There appear to be a few tools out there - what do people recommend for
this? My music is all backed up but I am concerned that if I (for
example) removed the library entries then iTunes will physically delete
music also. I have 30k tracks - doing this manually is not an option.

Re: [slim] Keep SB3 or get touch...please help me decide!!

2011-11-21 Thread yeomanspc

Whatever you do about a touch, keep the SB3 - I think you'll regret it
if you get rid. I've had every player aside from Boom since the start
(and still have them all). The SB3 is rock solid, quality, and the
visuals are just right. The touch is ok (I have 3), but it's overly
complex and less stable than the SB3. SB3's seem to hold their value
for a reason..

Re: [slim] Thank you Slim Devices.

2011-11-21 Thread yeomanspc

The original SLIM guys had a vision and it's actually stood the test of
time well. I still have a couple of SLIMP3's being used as well as
every other box except boom, now in every room in the house except
batroom! (yep, garage, shed, hall, conservatory etc.). To my mind, the
SB3 was an excellent device with no hassle. Logitech have tried to make
the devices more capable and complex recently, but maybe a cut-price
simple device where you don't have to be a geek or a nerd to make it
all work would sell well. I know a few folk who gave up on Touch's and
bought instead all SB3's for their simplicity (and they just work). I
don't think the players are in their twilight - with the new Android
and IOS apps as controllers I believe they have a new lease of life.

I always get mine from this place.. http://www.headingonline.com

Re: [slim] Dead SB3 - PSU or SB3 Itself?

2011-08-24 Thread yeomanspc

For sure the most likely problem is the PSU. But don't simply test the
voltage output from the PSU - very often this is ok but it's the load
that causes it to fail (and a simple voltmeter won't test for that).
Considering the cost of SB3's (and the fact you can't buy them now),
I'd always shell out for a new beefy PSU just to try it (OEM ones can
be found for 15ukp / 20usd). If you have other players, try the PSU
from one of those.

Re: [slim] Touch reliability

2011-08-13 Thread yeomanspc

Agree with other posts - the Touch is a good replacement for the SB3.
The receivers are ok if you really don't want to see what's playing,
but the Duet controller is hard work.

On your SB3, I note that you say you checked the voltage but very often
the voltage is ok until you start to draw current - then it drops and
you see intermittent faults. If you have another PSU that you know
works, try swapping them. Or maybe borrow one from someone else. Over
the years I've had a few SB's die - checked the voltage which was ok,
but a new PSU fixed it.

I'm back to 7.5.6 - did a complete clean and re-install (having also
done that on 7.6.1) Spent more time than I care on getting it [not]
working the last 10 days. But it's stable. I can't imagine LMS is
going to be better than 7.6.1 - if you don't access mysqueezebox.com I
can honestly recommend going back to 7.5.6 (it just works). Bad news
about dropping MIP - first I'd heard. Looks like I'm about to exercise
the fall-back plan and freeze everything on 7.5.5 for the forseeable
future. I never connect to msb.com so not an issue.
Good luck.

If you manage to fix, please post back the cure. I'll be taking a look

Question: What would make you buy another Squeezebox ?

- Simplified usage after initial installation/configuration
- Improved support for existing online services
- Support for more online services
- Improved stability and/or less bugs in Squeezebox Server/Player
  firmware
- Improved stability and/or less bugs in mysqueezebox.com
- Improved browsing of local library
- New Squeezebox hardware with built-in speakers and stereo support
- New Squeezebox hardware which have reliable support for local music
  without computer
- New Squeezebox hardware with support for video
- New entry level Squeezebox hardware with a lower price

I recently bought some receivers to replace SB2's and have better synch
with Touch and SB3's, so if Logitech brought out a completely new
generation I might be persuaded but to be honest I'm out of rooms now
and the later stuff just doesn't match the reliability of the earlier
SB3's. It seems to me that what the audio market wants is SB3's or
receiver/ipeng combination. I wasted another hour last night trying to
get a Duet controller to connect to the server (others were fine).

On that point (and you don't list this option)I am fairly sure that if
they brought out a model with an integrated CD player for backup when
the rest doesn't work, my wife would be first in line..

[slim] 'Turn All Players Off' function

2011-08-07 Thread yeomanspc

Does anyone know if there a simple way, from player (or from the web
gui) to turn all players off with one 'command'. I think it might be
possible with ipeng (but I refuse to buy Apple products). 14
registered devices, it's a p.i.t.a to scroll thru them all (and with
7.6's apparent desire to randomly turn devices on, it would be useful).

As Stratmangler says - check the PSU. You are probably thinking that
the PSU is ok because it is powering up but if the PSU is suspect then
you'll get unpredictable behaviour from the player. I've had 4 that
still power up units but which did not work correctly - but the players
were ok when I changed the PSU. It's worth a go.

Re: [slim] Sad day--Slim Devices SB3 just bit the dust!

2011-07-30 Thread yeomanspc

Check the power supply. I've had a few Slim Devices
(SLIMP3/SB2/SB3)stop working, but on swapping the PSU for another (from
another device) they've been ok. If that doesn't fix it, you might be
able to re-flash/re-load the firmware (can't remember if you can do
this or how on a SB3 though).

I've had Slim devices of all types (except boom) since the start and
none of them have failed other than the PSU's (got 14 devices now).
Still got 3x SLIMP3's working fine. My point is that whilst the PSU's
seem to fail a lot, the base units seem very robust. Sticking a
volt-meter on the PSU will not check it properly though - it's the
power load (current)which is the issue. PSU's can be purchased from
independent suppliers (do not need to buy a Logitech one). Sources
listed in the forums. Good luck.

Re: [slim] Newb: How do I synchronize internet radio in two parts of the house?

2011-05-30 Thread yeomanspc

A word of caution.. if you are looking to synch internet radio over
multiple players you will almost certainly get some drift over time,
especially if the players are not identical. This is because there is
no break (like when you move from one track to another if playing local
music). SC re-synchs players at the start of each track normally but
cannot do this for radio feeds.

Or maybe there is a setting I have missed? I'd be pleased to be
corrected (might address the synch problem I have with internet radio
even though I upgraded all my main players to be latest gen to try to
fix it).

[slim] How much CPU? SS periodically getting greedy.

2011-02-18 Thread yeomanspc

I've been running Slim/Squeeze since the beginning (SLIMP3) - always on
old laptops. Last year, with the growth in the number of players we
have (13)plus the size of the music library (30k tracks) I decided to
replace the old laptop with a proper PC (Intel i5 661 - Dual Core
3.3GHz, 8GB memory, Win7 Ultimate 64bit). All has been well, and for
the most part it 'idles' at 3% but every few days Squeezeserver starts
to consume 25% of CPU (even with no players running). A SS restart
will see it fall to 2% again. I'm currently running 7.5.4 r 31837 but
I've had this issue for a few months now. It's not re-scanning and
disk I/O is low. Memory consumption is OK - about 200mb.

Has anyone else noticed similar CPU consumption, or got some hints on
how to determine the real cause?

[slim] Synching SB2 with Receiver problems

2010-07-30 Thread yeomanspc

I am trying to synch a SB2 and a receiver. I am getting a 'blip' /
interrupt 3 to 6 seconds into each track if I select 'maintain
synchronization while playing' on the player settings.
Running 7.5.2 r30889 on win xp pro. Both players are hard wired on
gigabit LAN.
I've reset the time on the server, and power recycled both players.

If I select not to synch players then I get no interrupt.
Even if I skip to next track in playlist, I still get interrupt 6
seconds into track. Music format is MP3 192kbs and 320kbs. No
crossfade. I've upped the 'minimum synchronization adjustment to 95ms
but it makes no difference.

I've had Slim players since the start and never had a problem like this
before.

Any ideas?

From a while back I recall that if you created a play list with 2
entries for your favorite radio station, and set the list to repeat,
then when one entry 'stopped', it would move to the next. With repeat

though.. I gues it depends on why the player is going to a 'stopped'
state.

[slim] 7.3 looks good, seems stable

2008-11-27 Thread yeomanspc

I've been itching to install 7.3, but holding back just in case it
wasn't reliable. Well I took the plunge this week and I am delighted
with it. I had to reboot the server pc to get the controller to
upgrade the firmware, but thus far it has been excellent. So this post
is for others who are feeling nervous.. go for it!

I have 10 players around the house of all vintages and the new
controller audio-out seems to be working just fine (including volume).
Thanks to the development team for delivering so many nice new features
(which thus far seem to work well). Good job.

Win XP laptop server, mostly wired players.

Re: [slim] SoftSqueeze Underwater

2008-10-03 Thread yeomanspc

Running SC 7.2.1 (Oct 2 build) and SS 3.7 on WIN XP pro SP3 / Java
1.6.0_07. Lately (since 7.2?) Softsqueeze started skipping / jumping
and yes sometimes - bad quality (underwater is good description). I
changed to a Duet and it's fine. Expensive fix for my desk :-(. SS
worked fine ever since it was released (3 years?) till just the last
couple of weeks.
I tried installing the MP3 plugin but that made little/no difference.
It's like the stream gets interrupted momentarilly. Also increased the
buffer size, but it still jumps / stops. My cpu is running never more
than 50% and disk IO is minimal. 2gb memory. Ideas?

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Controller Upgrade failed

2008-08-17 Thread yeomanspc

You do not indicate which version of SC you are on. I upgraded to 7.1 a
while back and expected an upgrade to the controller but nothing
happened, so (like you) I went into setup / advanced and tried to
select it manually. Like many others who have tried, it sits there and
comes back with a failed message. But tonight, even though I have not
upgraded my server software, it prompted me to upgrade to 7.1 r2722,
and if I go into manual update again, it correctly identifies the
latest release (instead of the '?.' that was displayed before.)

Re: [slim] Replacement power supply for SLIMP3

2008-04-21 Thread yeomanspc

I had the same problem.
I just purchased a Duet etc. in the US and it has US power adapter, but
the new power supplies come with slot in clips for each country (but
only US supplied for US market) - I wanted a UK one and found this site
on the web who sell the UK clips for the Duet. But also, you can
purchase the whole power adapters which are good for SB and Slimp3.
So.. for a 2A adapter try this

http://www.watt-power.co.uk/catalogue/watts-phihong-plugin-adapter-3324v-psa11r-p-44.html
for a more capable 3A adapter, try this

http://www.watt-power.co.uk/catalogue/watts-psa15r-phihong-wall-plug-adapter-energy-star-p-82.html
and for UK power clips to fit the US Duet adapter try these

http://www.watt-power.co.uk/catalogue/input-clip-psmpsar-series-adapters-p-52.html

[slim] Remote squeezebox over internet to SS using dynamic DNS?

2008-02-01 Thread yeomanspc

I have a couple of vacation places that I stay with wireless routers. I
wanted to put a SqueezeBox in each with access to my slimserver (which
is on my home network where the router has dynamic dns for remote
access). I have used softsqueeze ok remotely (because you can enter
the dyndns url of the router into softsqueeze). Is there a way to
enter a URL into SB3? I guess the alternative is to find the WAN ip
address of the router and enter that each time, but it would be a whole
lot easier if it accepts a url.

seems to be working now, but really not sure why. Also changed firwall

[slim] Radio Connection problems

2007-03-12 Thread yeomanspc

Hi.
I am running 6.5.2 (Mar 11 build) - installed because I was having
problems with 6.5.1. (not radio)

I can connect to shoutcast stations and to Alien BBC, but not to other
streams (for example SlimDevices picks from uk - like Radio 1 (but
works on Alien) or Virgin Radio). I am testing with Softsqueeze. Java
v11 installed.

Softsqueeze screen shows connecting, and cycles round. I have changed
connection timeout to 15 secs. Same symptoms on SB's too. Any ideas on
how I debug this - e.g. which debug flag(s) do I set on for starters.

Re: [slim] Radio Connection problems

2007-03-12 Thread yeomanspc

I have turned all firewalls off (in router and in server PC)
I am getting Stream not readable errors. I am sending this to an old
SLIMP3, but output for SB and Softsqueeze is similar. I also reverted
to 6.51 and get same errors. I am not sure what might have changed to
make this not work.. it was ok.

This is output from debugger.. Any ideas?

Re: [slim] Radio Connection problems

2007-03-12 Thread yeomanspc

So.. done all that and still no joy:-(.
Took zone alarm off the sytem (de-installed) .. same behaviour.

Installed Slimserver and sofsqueeze on 'almost' identical other pc on
same network and works ok (so problem is in the server pc, not in the
router firewall or connection).

Will try de-install of slimserver (and delete directories etc) with
clean install again.
Thanks for your help

[slim] Saving Playlist as Favorite with 'old' remote

2007-02-28 Thread yeomanspc

I am trying to save a playlist as a favorite. I have original remotes
with SB's. So far, the only way I can see is display the playlist in
the playlist menu with the softsqueeze interface and press the favorite
button for 2 seconds while the playlist is showing. There doesn't seem
to be a menu option to do this through the SB interface (the menu
options allow to save only a track or a radio station). I am running
6.5.1.

[slim] Re: browseupnp entry on browse menu

2006-12-20 Thread yeomanspc

Yes it is.. I find out that this is the MS recommended way to share
media content to an XBox from a pc. So next qn.. is it possible to
exclude this from the menu? We tried removing it from the list of
clients, or blocking it, but the menu item remains. Is it possible to
prevent SlimServer picking up other media servers.. or to exclude some?

[slim] browseupnp entry on browse menu

2006-12-19 Thread yeomanspc

I am running 6.5.1 (nightly Dec 16). There is a PC on my home network
that has access to my slimserver and the pcname: username: appears as
the last entry on the browse menu as
'PCNAME: Userid:'

The html behind it is..
'http://musicserver:9000/browseupnp.html?device=uuid:d1ee2a19-382e-4c2b-bf8c-0970e5b406fahierarchy=0title=PCNAME:
Userid:player=f9:18:4a:36:0e:8e '

Does anyone know why this is being included?

[slim] Radio stream and Bandwidth consumption

2006-08-05 Thread yeomanspc

My family have some favorite radio stations that we can only listen to
on the Slim Player. We have noticed bandwidth consumption has
increased significantly as a result. In part this is because people
select the radio on every SB as they go from room to room, and then
either do not stop it or turn it off when they leave the room, or turn
off the amplifier (not the SB). So I have a few questions..
1. If, when listening to internet radio, you simply turn the SB off,
does it stop the streaming into the server? - I appreciate it stops
streaming to the SB. (I assume it does).
2. If a radio station is already being streamed to one player, is it
possible (has anyone considered) - as an option - automatically
synching to the already streamed player to save upline bandwidth.
3. When synching players to a radio station I understand that they get
out of synch due to 'no start of track' - has anyone considered (as a
synch option) to insert a 're-synch' every (say) 5 minutes?

As a short term fix, I have installed the powersave plugin to turn
players off every hour by default but this is a bit cumbersome.

[slim] Re: SS v6.2.0 WMA convert error - check file types

2005-10-25 Thread yeomanspc

I upgraded to 6.2 I have mixture of squeezeboxes and slimp3's. I am
trying to access Radio Streams (multiple url's in a playlist.
)Initially, on one SLIMP3 I got the WMA convert error, but I checked
for the presence of Lame (it wasn't there, so I added it)- now it tries
to connect, fails, then moves to the next url on the list. The
SQUEEZEBOX and SoftSqueeze work fine. It worked fine with SlimServer
6.1. Any ideas please?
