Re: [slim] Does Anyone Have a Slimdevice for Sale?
I feel I need to defend the Duets - I have had 4 since they were first available and they never missed a beat other than on 2 occasions I had to set them up again. Mine are all wired now (not Wi-Fi). I have 3 Touchs and had a screen fail on one (Logitech replaced the player foc but Id be more wary of a 2nd hand Touch than a Duet/receiver. But if I was buying now, Id get a Pi for a player and use IPeng or similar as controller. Keep looking for a touch if thats what you want- they do come up occasionally. Re: [slim] NAS + Squeezebox + Plex
Plex and LMS run on pretty much everything, so it comes down to how much time you have to build. I run a QNAP for plex and LMS with 90TB of stuff. The QLMS package runs 8.3 fine. You suggest you want off-site listening - whatever your NAS, do not expose ports to web, or you will one day find it all encrypted - use a private VPN for remote access. Sorry if thats obvious but a lot get caught out by leaving UPNP active. Ideally a box/case to put it in (plenty on amazon). A charger (USB) - go for a 2amp or more (so it can power the Pi and a hard disk). And a Mini usb cable. 1 SD memory card - suggest 8gb min, probably best to go for 16gb - to store the OS on. Storage for any local music you might have. I prefer Msata because that is silent and small (no spinning disk, but it's hugely expensive), so maybe just buy a 2.5 hard drive and a USB caddy. or if no local music, then do not bother. if less then 56gb of your own music, buy a 64gb SD card for the operating system and store it on that. Or a USB thumb drive. That's it. Download squeezeplug for pi, install (per instructions), and job done. 1 silent, no bother LMS server. Pop it next to your router in a cupboard and forget.. Squeezeplug has the ability to share the storage networked to windows, so you really never need to go touch it - you can copy music to it and maintain it all from your pc over the network. This happened to me a couple of weeks ago with z100. I found all the URL's for iheart (an iheart url serves up the list) and manually copied the url into the favorite and it worked fine. That was when I was in NY. I just tried from the uk and the list that was served up was missing z100. Re: [slim] Alternative to Touch
So to get back to your original question re the touch replacement, a lot of us bought a spare (or more) player. With Michael doing some excellent work on 7.9, and having looked round at a lot of players, I conclude that there is nothing around today to replace all that the Squeezebox environment does, and that whatever comes along it is unlikely to last the 12+ years that Squeezebox has. Many on here (myself included) have future-proofed and you could do the same. I expect to be using the Squeeze system in 10 years - how many tech system last that long now? When my Logitech hardware dies I have tried Raspberry Pi with the HIFiBerry cards, the Odroid, the Wandboard (mentioned above) as excellent headless players which when combined with Ipeng or other tablet controllers provide function that is fine, and a fraction of the cost of Sonos etc. I am not concerned about hardware. I moved the server to the NAS so no longer need a windows PC, and for spare server I have an Odroid which absolutely flies. The only faint worry is MySqueezeboxServer.com which has to be pulled eventually, but I am sure we'll work round that (a lot of progress already). IMHO, Logitech couldn't make this pay because it was so darned good and had insufficient levers to force users to keep upgrading the hardware that the business was flawed. It's too open, but that's your protection too. BTW, bad files / tags etc. will mess up other systems also :-) yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102086 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SB2 on continuous reboot - timout on searching for LMS?
I still have 3 SB2 devices in remote corners of the house (workshop, garage etc.) - great for what they do. I have been having (for quite some time now) occasional problems with getting them to connect to LMS. They power up, prompt for setup network, pick up an IP address (either DHCP or Manual), and then they fail when looking for a LMS server - re-starting the boot cycle. I have 2 - 3 LMS servers, and the problems seem to happen if the LMS that the SB2 was attached to is stopped for some reason. Occasionally it might pick up a server, but 9+ times out of 10 it re-boots within about 2 seconds. I'm wondering if there is a timing problem where it's not waiting long enough. Servers are QNAP x70 pro, Network is Gigabit, LMS is 7.8.0-1386246861 (also occasional windows server) - but it happens with all versions for a while now. PSU's are new. If I look at settings then it still has the IP of the LMS that it was last connected to. I reset the device by pressing the power button for 5 seconds. I have tried manual configure and auto, but the same result is that as soon as it goes off looking for a slimserver, it barfs. The only slight difference is that on manual configure I might get a glimpse of a LMS before the reboot. I also have a SLIMP3 and that is fine because you can manually enter the LMS address on startup. Final point - if I turn all but one LMS off on the network, and setup the squeezebox then when it goes looking for a server it will flash the server name before rebooting. If I press the right button just before/when it flashes then it still re-boots, but it will have stored the server IP correctly and will come up ok next time. Ideas anyone? SB2 firmware is 40. I'm wondering if there is a CLI issue between latest LMS and the SB2 setup (assuming it is using CLI). yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=101153 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Moved music folder - how to tell iTunes?
I moved my music folder to my NAS a while back. All is well from a Squeeze standpoint. However, I was running Itunes on my PC with music on the PC. So now iTunes cannot find the music. If I re-load my library using iTunes, then it will also want to re-copy all my music to my Ipods. Bad idea.. I found that the music location is defined in the iTunes Music Library.xml file, so changed the path statements in all of those, but this does not fix it. All of the web searches yield solutions to get iTunes to move the music, or to move the library loacation, whereas what I need to do update the iTunes libray with the new pointers. There is a file called iTunes Library.itl which is an iTunes database file, and I suspect is created from the xml file. I am sure some other forum members must have had the same issue, so any advice would be welcomed. yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100806 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Moved music folder - how to tell iTunes?
Yes, you can tell it where the library is, but if the music files are not stored in the iTunes library (there is no way i would let iTunes manage my music files/tags/structure) then the library basically just has a pointer to the physical location of the music file (this is an entry for each and every music file). This is in addition to a lot for metadata about each music track. So.. I am not moving the iTunes library, but I have moved the music which the itunes library records point to. I have discovered that the .itl file appears to be the master, and that it creates the xml file when itunes loads - so changing the xml file with a different location is futile because it just creates a new one at the next startup.. yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100806 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Musicip on QNAS loads ok, then terminates
Well I discovered the problem, and in the interest of helping others am posting here. Thanks to Charles of Spicefly for his troubleshooting guide http://www.spicefly.com/article.php?page=spicefly-sugarcube-troubleshooting The Musicip library and the LMS library have to be specified _exactly__the same. In LMS, during setup when browsing for the music folder, I selected Share/Multimedia/Music. It now appears that this is an Alias, and when SSOTS installs MusicIP, it uses the full path which is Share/MD0_DATA/Multimedia/Music. Thus when LMS checks if the album or track is in MusicIP, it does not find the path and therefore does not offer the Create MusicIP Mix option. I went into LMS settings and changed the library path to be the same as MusicIP, reran the scanner and it now works. It's not ideal - I'd have preferred to have MusicIP use the Alias path (easier and more straightforward), but I can't seem to find where this is specified. For now it is working. It seems a number of others have struggled to get MIP working on a NAS, so hopefully this will help some. yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100539 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I have MIP on 2 x QNAP working just fine on one, and will not stay up on the other. Both installs done using SSOTS 4.14 on LMS 7.8. QNAPs are 569 Pro, and 670 pro (Intel Atom and i7) On the 670, MIP installs ok, and I can load the server page on port 10002, but as soon as I try to do anything in MIP, it stops working. Is there a Log that I can go to for information on what is failing? I suspect it is security related but MIP id is created ok by SSOTS and I am changing nothing. Re: [slim] MusicIP Mixer server status
+1 for using the Windows version, although I do seem to be able to still get analysis done on my QNAP server using the web interface provided by Charles of Spicefly. Since I now replicate my music to other servers, I have started to archive the fingerprints within the MP3 tags, but I also backup the m3lib file as well. So I run stand-alone and once the analysis is done it's not so bad. I guess this is the world we will have to get used to - if Logitech turn off the squeezebox.com servers it will be the same. Not as easy but we'll manage. Incidentally, fingerprinting a few hundred tracks usually runs fine overnight on the server, and as machines get more powerful it will take less time. If I lost all my fingerprints I'd still have the pc run for a few weeks to re-do them all again because MusicIP and Sugarcube are worth it. yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=99235 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I can align with your views as applied to my own situation, but we already have a squeezebox system, and if you are prepared to go the wandboard route that probably makes you like the rest of us and a bit technical. This Bose announcement is exactly what I would have expected Logitech to do a few years back, and it just demonstrates that Logitech did not need to pull the plug and (to my mind) completely missed a fantastic opportunity. We visited some relatives last week and they had one (yes, one) Squeezebox 3 which they ran off the laptop. I expressed an interest and the guy said he was going to buy a Sonos system because it seemed more capable, less fuss and had a better interface for finding music. He'd never seen the LMS web interface, nor Ipeng, nor SqueezeComander but was using the Logitech Android app. 20 minutes later after a quick demo and offer to give him a R-Pi LMS so he had an always on system, his only question was where can I get additional players now then to extend it? The documentation and infrastructure for the non technical on Squeeze was always lousy and therefore the non-technical were never able to realise the potential. No doubt Squeeze is far more capable than anything out there, but it's too hard for most. And to be frank, the majority would be just fine without plugging it into an amp, and I'll bet no more than 1% of the market potential either know what a DAC is or care. Sonos and Bose are both relatively expensive, but it's nice to see someone else in the market, and I think they'll do well. yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Would you pay for LMS - Subscription or One-Time?
I've seen references to this in other posts (Erland), but nothing direct, so I wondered.. To my mind, whereas I don't fully understand the logic behind Logitech's actions, I do understand that something had to change. With low cost Android and iDevice players able to hang off LMS (and just about anything else), Logitech had lost the lock-in and the opportunity to sell a lot more devices. Software is hugely profitable so why not sell LMS either via an annual fee, or as a one-time license including a commitment to support for x years? New players could come with 2 years subscription. There is clearly demand for players out there (the channel is drying up rapidly). It's always seemed dumb to me that SBS/LMS was free and increasingly so of late. A lot of people resent paying for software but I don't see the issue, and if enough of us are prepared to pay for LMS then it could still survive and make Logitech some money. There are plenty of subscription models that they could implement too - even down to charging a few dollars a year for each player (or emulated player) that is attached to MSB.com (thus protecting my investment in older technology and giving them a regular income to keep MSB.com alive). yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96266 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Longivity
I have only had one unit fail in 10 years, and that was a Touch that was in my conservatory which gets warm in summer, so heat is the killer. Even then, it was only the display that broke so the unit still played music. I've had to replace quite a few PSU's, but these are easy to come by and I usually replace with more robust ones. I guess the obvious is to unplug the player if it is not going to be used for long periods (say a week) but I would not unplug if I used daily because that just creates more thermal expansion stress from heating up and cooling down. Setting the 'powered off' screen saver to blank, and dimming the display whenever you can will help. yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96228 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Just 5 years and a bit less than 2 month Logitech has acquired Slim Devices
To be fair to Logitech, it must be hard to please everyone - even I find that one week I have one opinion on what kind of player / message they should push, and then that changes a few weeks later. People claim the duet is a disaster and I am inclined to agree except that since I got an ipad and installed ipeng, suddenly I'm thinking that receivers hidden away are actually quite good and maybe Logitech should be pushing that more as a way to grow out of the main music room and into the rest of the house (isn't that similar to Sonos?). If they want hardware volumes, it's easier to sell an extra 2 or 3 players to existing customers rather than attract new customers. The controller was (and remains) the weakness in the Duet combo. The touch is ok but it's not going to spread beyond 1 or 2 per house unless the price drops. The VFD devices were my preference till I started with ipeng, but now I'm tempted to churn my SB2's for receivers (if only I could find them at reasonable price). Is it me, or have Logitech meandered on strategy? Suddenly they appear to be thinning the range down - either we are about to see the lot drop off a cliff, or some new boxes and direction have to come after Christmas (maybe at CES?). -- yeomanspc yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=92232 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'm getting SB radio for my wife (part of the attraction is the presets for favorite radio stations - simple UI). However, I also have trackstat installed (required by Spicefly sugarcube) so now when I press and hold one of buttons 1-6, I get the trackstat setting. Does this mean that when I install the SBRadio, the preset buttons will not work as designed? If so, is there a way round this? I only have rackstat installed because Sugarcube pre-reqs it. [slim] Refresh iTunes library?
After years of resistance, my new car really only supports IPod as a usable music storage device so I gave in and bought an iPod and installed iTunes. Ugh! It kinda works - I imported my music directory into iTunes library without actually having to import the music, and then used iTunes to sync to the iPod. I would never use iTunes to manage my real library, but have just re-organised a load of directories and tags - generally moved stuff around and renamed a lot of tracks as a result of cleaning tags. The problem now is that although I can re-run add folder to library - all that does is add new entries for the revised file names - there appears to be no way to remove library entries for file names that no longer exist! I'm looking for an iTunes equivalent of MIP's refresh tracks function. There appear to be a few tools out there - what do people recommend for this? My music is all backed up but I am concerned that if I (for example) removed the library entries then iTunes will physically delete music also. For sure the most likely problem is the PSU. But don't simply test the voltage output from the PSU - very often this is ok but it's the load that causes it to fail (and a simple voltmeter won't test for that). Considering the cost of SB3's (and the fact you can't buy them now), I'd always shell out for a new beefy PSU just to try it (OEM ones can be found for 15ukp / 20usd). Agree with other posts - the Touch is a good replacement for the SB3. The receivers are ok if you really don't want to see what's playing, but the Duet controller is hard work. On your SB3, I note that you say you checked the voltage but very often the voltage is ok until you start to draw current - then it drops and you see intermittent faults. If you have another PSU that you know works, try swapping them. Or maybe borrow one from someone else. I can't imagine LMS is going to be better than 7.6.1 - if you don't access mysqueezebox.com I can honestly recommend going back to 7.5.6 (it just works). Bad news about dropping MIP - first I'd heard. Looks like I'm about to exercise the fall-back plan and freeze everything on 7.5.5 for the forseeable future. I never connect to msb.com so not an issue. Me too. It's on the list of things that have been broken by 7.6 to go fix. I know some people have it working ok though. MusicIP is working fine, but no recognition of it in SBS. I am runnning MIP headless (as specified by Spicefly sugarcube.) Not had issues for a long time. Sigh.. If you manage to fix, please post back the cure. Thanks bobkoure. And this is a consumer product? So I downloaded sqlite and updated the database and now a mip option appears, but no mix is produced - either on the web interface or through a player. But mip produces a mix if called directly (externally to sbs). I double checked all the settings and it seems configured correctly. stopped / restarted sbs and system several times. Now it's only finding 5 of the 12 players connected. I give up. 7.5 worked, I'm going back (so long as it will let me..). Does anyone know if there a simple way, from player (or from the web gui) to turn all players off with one 'command'. I think it might be possible with ipeng (but I refuse to buy Apple products). 14 registered devices, it's a p.i.t.a to scroll thru them all (and with 7.6's apparent desire to randomly turn devices on, it would be useful). -- yeomanspc yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89435 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

As Stratmangler says - check the PSU. You are probably thinking that the PSU is ok because it is powering up but if the PSU is suspect then you'll get unpredictable behaviour from the player. Re: [slim] Sad day--Slim Devices SB3 just bit the dust!
Check the power supply. I've had a few Slim Devices (SLIMP3/SB2/SB3)stop working, but on swapping the PSU for another (from another device) they've been ok. If that doesn't fix it, you might be able to re-flash/re-load the firmware (can't remember if you can do this or how on a SB3 though). I've had Slim devices of all types (except boom) since the start and none of them have failed other than the PSU's (got 14 devices now). Still got 3x SLIMP3's working fine. My point is that whilst the PSU's seem to fail a lot, the base units seem very robust. Sticking a volt-meter on the PSU will not check it properly though - it's the power load (current)which is the issue. PSU's can be purchased from independent suppliers (do not need to buy a Logitech one). Sources listed in the forums. Re: [slim] Newb: How do I synchronize internet radio in two parts of the house?
A word of caution.. if you are looking to synch internet radio over multiple players you will almost certainly get some drift over time, especially if the players are not identical. This is because there is no break (like when you move from one track to another if playing local music). SC re-synchs players at the start of each track normally but cannot do this for radio feeds. Or maybe there is a setting I have missed? I'd be pleased to be corrected (might address the synch problem I have with internet radio even though I upgraded all my main players to be latest gen to try to fix it). -- yeomanspc yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88020 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] How much CPU? SS periodically getting greedy.
I've been running Slim/Squeeze since the beginning (SLIMP3) - always on old laptops. Last year, with the growth in the number of players we have (13)plus the size of the music library (30k tracks) I decided to replace the old laptop with a proper PC (Intel i5 661 - Dual Core 3.3GHz, 8GB memory, Win7 Ultimate 64bit). All has been well, and for the most part it 'idles' at 3% but every few days Squeezeserver starts to consume 25% of CPU (even with no players running). A SS restart will see it fall to 2% again. I'm currently running 7.5.4 r 31837 but I've had this issue for a few months now. It's not re-scanning and disk I/O is low. Memory consumption is OK - about 200mb. [slim] Radio stream and Bandwidth consumption
My family have some favorite radio stations that we can only listen to on the Slim Player. We have noticed bandwidth consumption has increased significantly as a result. In part this is because people select the radio on every SB as they go from room to room, and then either do not stop it or turn it off when they leave the room, or turn off the amplifier (not the SB). So I have a few questions.. 1. If, when listening to internet radio, you simply turn the SB off, does it stop the streaming into the server? - I appreciate it stops streaming to the SB. (I assume it does). 2. If a radio station is already being streamed to one player, is it possible (has anyone considered) - as an option - automatically synching to the already streamed player to save upline bandwidth. 3. When synching players to a radio station I understand that they get out of synch due to 'no start of track' - has anyone considered (as a synch option) to insert a 're-synch' every (say) 5 minutes? As a short term fix, I have installed the powersave plugin to turn players off every hour by default but this is a bit cumbersome. -- yeomanspc yeomanspc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=249 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26139 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SS v6.2.0 WMA convert error - check file types
I upgraded to 6.2 I have mixture of squeezeboxes and slimp3's. I am trying to access Radio Streams (multiple url's in a playlist. )Initially, on one SLIMP3 I got the WMA convert error, but I checked for the presence of Lame (it wasn't there, so I added it)- now it tries to connect, fails, then moves to the next url on the list. The SQUEEZEBOX and SoftSqueeze work fine. It worked fine with SlimServer 6.1. Any ideas please? -- yeomanspc ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
