Re: [slim] A Spotify virgin seeking guidance
I am using Spotty and LMS 7.9.1. I actually eventually bit the bullet and upgraded to 7.9.1 *because* I use Spotify (and hence Spotty) a lot. Indeed it is awesome to discover new music, ot to check out new music by a fav artist before plonking down on the CD ti rip it and get that infinitesimal AQ extra. :-D 7.9.1 is absolutely rock solid. Works actually better than the old versions, IMHO. And integration with Spotify via Spotty in 7.9.1 is awesome. So my recommendation is to bite the bullet and upgrade to 7.9.1 and leave things like that, it's far less work than setting up a separate Pi-based system, I'd imagine. Only caveat with using Spotify through Spotty is that, while you can of course create great playlists, when you save them within LMS they shall stay in LMS, and not propagate to Spotify (say, when you're in the gym and want to listen to a playlist you created through LMS). I tent to use the two systems for different music listening styles, so it suits me, but YMMV. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine (on VMware Workstation 14 Pro) running Ubuntu 16.04 + LMS 7.9 System: SB Touch --optical->- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR->- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval->- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic-> NAD D7050 -> Totem DreamCatcher + Velodyne Minivee Sub Computer audio: workstation --USB->- audioengine D1 -> Grado PS500e/Shure 1540 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109979 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I've had flaky results with DSTM, but, to each their own. As a user of both environments, this works best for me, your approach works best for you. I use Spotify (Spotty) in conjunction with DSTM (Don't Stop The Music) & the Lastmix plugin. DSTM is built into LMS since 7.9 Basically I play an album or playlist from my own FLACs. At the end of the playlist DSTM automatically adds 5 new tracks (Based on what I have been playing and using data from Last FM). These new tracks are selected either from my own collection or from Spotify or a mixture of both. After these 5 tracks another 5 get added etc. Spotify frequently throws me stuff I have never heard before which I may then investigate further. Another plugin that comes in useful here is What Was That Tune - which stores a log of what player played what so I can reference back. I don't use the Spotify Connect ability of Spotty at all. Re: [slim] A Spotify virgin seeking guidance
I think the OP would need to update to a more recent version of LMS. Plus Spotty doesn't work with all servers. Yes, I'm pretty sure the current Spotty plugin won't work on SS 7.6.1 (which dates from 2011). TBH I'm not 100% sure it wouldn't work. But I've never tested it. And some of the nice-to-have features even require 7.9.1 (eg. seeking within a track). I presume the Logitech-supplied "Spotify" plugin listed on 7.6.1 isn't the current one - didn't I see some threads a while back about how Spotify had changed their APIs? That plugin is defunct. -- Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Regarding Spotify: it can be a useful resource, but to have it really become that you'll also have to use it outside of LMS I'm afraid. It seems to me that if you only use it from inside LMS, using the Spotty plugin, it doesn't actually learn what you're preferences are. Spotify has several tailored playlists, as well as personal recommendations, and to me it seems as if these don't take into account the music I've played outside of the native Spotify app. The Spotty plugin actually allows for 2 ways of interacting with your Spotify Premium account: - Through Spotify Connect: this allows you to use the "Devices available" function of the native apps. - Directly browsing your Spotify library. This has no impact at all on what's playing through the native apps It's only music played the first way that actually seems to be taken into account. This method also allows for transferring playback from one device to another. An example: I use Spotify on my Android phone in my car. When I get home, I can just switch over what I'm playing to my Living room stereo, picking up where playback paused upon exiting my car. Maybe I'm missing something, but the simplest approach is probably to just install the Spotty plugin on your existing server. Why does using Spotify warrant a new server? [slim] A Spotify virgin seeking guidance
Up to now I've only ever played music from a local server, and since my very old setup (Squeezebox Server 7.6.1) does everything I need and has been utterly rock-solid, have never felt the urge to upgrade. But friends tell me that Spotify is such a useful resource for finding new music that I feel I really should investigate it. A bit of cursory reading implies that perhaps the simplest approach would be to build a new server on a Raspberry Pi with piCorePlayer, and the necessary Spotify plugin comes built-in, ready to install/activate. Is it really as easy as that? Additionally, I currently use a couple of third party plugins that MUST continue to work - specifically Power Switch II and Power Save. Would they still work on the later LMS that piCorePlayer installs? I also use Squeezer on Android devices as a controller, but am prepared to change to a different Android app if necessary to access Spotify. Any recommendations? (As an aside, it would be nice to find an Android app that provides selection of the Transporter's digital inputs, which Squeezer does not do).
