[slim] Re: How many SlimDevices units have been sold?

2006-06-02 Thread Mark Lanctot

It is an interesting question, but they have not released information in
the past about it.

Since the field is growing rapidly, releasing sales figures would show
the competition just how much the market is worth and how fast it's
growing. So for a privately held company (I assume this is the case)
there's no reason to release sales figures.

What I'm also interested in in sales growth. I'm sure there was a big
increase after the introduction of the SB3 and there was another large
increase after the New York Times article back in January.

2006-06-02 Thread Siduhe

I've often wondered if you could extrapolate sales from the traffic on
these forums (i.e. the number of posts about setup issues in a given
period).

There seemed (to me anyway) a clear increase in posts after both the
points that Mark mentions...

I was wondering the same thing. I have quite elaborate server logs for
downloads of my SuperDateTime plugin. But I'm not sure what percentage
of new SB purchasers download my particular plugin. It also doesn't
take into account people with multiple players.

SuperDateTime is the screen-saver running on my three SB2's, it's
awesome! (So, how many times has that plugin been downloaded?)

LOL. Alright! I believe I've included them in other posts in the
past, but for the past 6months I'd say SuperDateTime averages 40+
downloads a week. When I release a new version it spikes higher.

I use Urchin Web Analytics, which I believe is free. It offers quite a
lot of features that are quite interesting to drill through.

I'm a new Squeezebox 3 owner, having just purchased 2! So you can add
that to your list. :D

I ordered yesterday, received today, had one running in 15 minutes. It
would have taken less if I had been able to figure out where the
punctuation characters were when punching in my WPA key!
I had been thinking about this purchase for many months, so I'd already
been fooling around with SlimServer, making my first use of the
Squeezebox pretty easy.
I'll wait for a couple days before I get into the plugins.

As a completely random data point, my album art download script had been
downloaded about 1,000 times in the past 12 months. I haven't done any
analysis on unique IPs or anything -- just the raw data.

Plugin download count doesn't take into account how many people just use
Slimserver without a Squeezebox, maybe just with Softsqueeze or other
player. Not a bad metric, but I think there's too much variance.

[slim] Re: How many SlimDevices units have been sold?

2006-06-02 Thread JJZolx

I'll throw out a number for you: 11,500 units sold to date.

There are currently 5778 forum members.

Figure most, but not all people registered here own a Squeezebox.
Probably quite a few pre-sales types and many people who thought about
but never ended up buying one. But then we also have a significant
number of people who own multiple Squeezeboxes. Call it a wash: 5778
registered users = 5778 units.

Take a WAG and estimate that only about 1/2 of all Squeezebox owners
know about or care enough about the forums to have registered.

So 2 x 5778 is approximately 11,500 units sold.

An article dated 08/2004
(http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=26806414) says that
SD had sold "some 10,000 MP3 players". That was almost 2 years ago - 3
years after the launch of the slimp3 and long before the SB2 or 3 came
out. Given all the recent publicity, the new models etc I'd be amazed
if the current total was under 30k.

If anybody needs space for mirroring their plugins I'm happy to help. My
site gets 5GB of space and I'm using about 500MB. Also get 25GB traffic
each month. All for less than $4 a month.

As for figures, I'd estimate less than 25% of owners are forum
partakers. I'd also figure at least 25% of members to have more than
one SB.

Some more random data for the month of may '06:

SlimCD: 535
MusicInfoSCR: 167
AlbumReview: 219
Biography:161
NoSetup: 38
SlimRemote: 420

But then there are those downloads which are cancelled. Take the SlimCD
example: those 535 downloads generated "only" 31GB of traffic. Considering
a download size of 100MB this number should be much higher. There must
have been about 30% canceled downloads.

Now, how much feedback do I get for these hundreds of downloads? A few
dozens. SlimRemote? I know of about a hand full of users who at least
tried to run it. All the other either just use it or threw it away
immediately. What I want to say: only a minor number of users is here in
the forums. Most users just run their Slimserver and Squeezeboxes without
ever appearing here. Forum user count is as little a measure as plugin
downloads.

BTW: last night, when I got aware of the numbers for SlimCD, I had to
check my web hoster's contract... SlimCD has been downloaded about 4300x
since the first announcement about 12 months ago, generating some 300GB of
traffic. Though this is a shared hosting environment I luckily enough
don't have a traffic limit. SlimCD is generating about 97% of my domain's
transfer volume :-)

Hi "Jack Coates" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,

>my WAG would be more like 1/3 or even as low as 1/8.

I agree. I have talked four friends into buying squeezeboxes. When they mail
me for tech support, naturally I help them out, but also remind them that
there's lots of useful help pages, email list, searchable forum, wiki, etc.
None of them ever go anywhere near the website.

It even took me a while to convince my work pal (software engineer) that it was
a good idea to update to the latest release and get new firmware.

I imagine there's a rather large percentage of users that receive the kit,
download the software and just live with that version.

Also, I imagine that quite a few people on the forum own more than 1 squeezebox.
