FWIW I am having this problem with the qnap and sb3 combo. I think in
my case I didn't leave the scan long enough. Some directorys are fine,
whilst others have a couple of tracks in at best that play, despite the
album being listed there. Its no biggy for me as I still have several
(hah!)cds to rip and transfer across, so will do a full rescan and
leave it on when I'm at work.

What would be nice (don't know if its possible)is for slim to include a
progress bar to let you know when the scan is complete.

I haven't had the problem again, and it seemed to be an issue with the
file encoding.

Allofmp3 were upgrading their site at that point so may have been that,
but I have had no problems since.

I know use 6.2.2 with no issues, and it definitely re-scans much
quicker.

2006-04-17 Thread Ross L

Sorry for the frustrations! Can you please try deleting EVERYTHING in
C:\program files\slim server. After ensuring that is all removed,
please download the latest nightly build of slim server 6.2.2 from:

http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/6.2.2/

Please make sure your music folder does NOT contain any .pls or .lnk
files, I'd suggest searching with the windows search utility for *.pls,
*.lnk within the directory where you are referencing slim server for
your music.

Now install slim server, please point it to your music library and
click rescan. This next step is important, just walk away! Once you hit
rescan, don't touch the computer. Give it an hour, and try it out again.

Post here and let us know how it goes!

I seem to have - if not solved the problem - found a way to make it go

work in all cases, or if i won't see it again...

can someone with missing files try this?

I've solved it too by performing a clear library and rescan everything
under server settings. A normal rescan didn't solve the problem.

Before that, the individual files that would not play had no attributes
against them when viewing them in the web interface. Now, all
attributes are present and the file will play.

Clear library and rescan didn't fix it for me either.
Stopped SlimServer, deleted the C:\Program

again to let it do a complete scan, playing music at the same time.
However, SlimServer service stops and has to be restarted every now and
again. Anyone else get this during a rescan ? Maybe it is trying to
open a track (file) that it doesn't know about yet.

SlimServer 6.2.2 Firmware 41, Win XP.

Hello:

I am having this same problem, but, with normal ripped from CD mp3.

I dont get it, everyother player on my machine plays the files but
slimserver hangs on them.

For example, I recently purchased the new Flaming Lips album, I ripped
it using constan bit rate @ 320.
I then transfered it to my desktop via the home network.
I rescanned the library.
Then I browsed my Music Folder, looked for my The Flaming Lips Folder,
looked there inside for the new album.
I pushed play on the remote...and after three songs boom, it started
repeatin, asi if in the folder there where only three songs.
All the songs were ripped the same, but when i chosse any song that is
not the first three i get the error message, cant open file for:

I am using
SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

Did you go to Browse Music Folder and start trying to play the album
before Slimserver had finished scanning your Music Library ? I seem to
recall some people have reported problems trying to play a newly ripped
album before Slimserver finishes the scan of the database. Best to
wait until the scan has finished before trying to play.

If that's not what you did, perhaps try a full clear everything and
rescan rather than a find new or changed music scan.

Hi,

were those files in AAC or MP3?
There are some AAC aka MP4 aka M4A files that won't play with
Slimserver. I had to recode them with iTunes (in the same format like
from 192kb mp4 to 192kb mp4) and then they were playing fine. As I only
ran across this with a few files from allofmp3.com they occasionally
seem to encode some bytes which Slimserver doesn't like.

Not a solution, but I can also confirm I have experienced the same
problem. When adding new music, generally, the first two tracks on an
album will play fine and all the others will report 'Can't open file
for:'. Occassionally the file will fail part way through playing at a
specific time, everytime.

The only solution I have found is to copy the files, MP3 for me, to a new
directory and rescan. I then need to delete the old directory, rescan,
rename the new directory and rescan again. The music is then accessible as
it should be. Without the middle delete and rescan the files remain
unplayable.

I was experiencing this on 6.2.1 on Linux so upgraded to the nightly on
2006_03_15 - no better.

Hopefully someone can advise if this is a known bug or not.

This happens to me on two different cases:

1. One of the cases I could not isolate the types of files that got
that error. But somehow, the solution was to run Slim.exe from a DOS
command line, as opposed to start from the Windows Start Menu.

2. More recently I had problems with Tags with accented characters
(e.g. German characters). I replaced the accented character and it
worlked.

Note that I am running MusicMagic Mixer on the PC side.

Thanks for the reply.

The music is downloaded, but not from a site which uses any kind of
DRM. (allofmp3.com)

I have downloaded quite a lot in the past but this seems to be anissue
since installing 6.2.2.

As i said earlier, I had album which I added to itunes last weekend,
which wouldn't play and gave me the same error. I tried that again
yesterday expecting it not to work, but it did.

Could it be a library re-scan issue?

The files are AAC 128bit. All my other music is fine it is just the
most recently added stuff.

Thanks again

2006-03-12 Thread dakotadave

I am having this same problem. I have done rescans also. I am using
flac files and have put them in a directory. I am able to play them
all using J. River Media Center or other media players. Most of my
flacs were ripped with either J. River or EAC. However, I get this
error of can't open file and then the box plays another track in that
album. For example, with Counting Crows, Films I try to play from
the top but, first, it does not even see track 1, rather it sees track
17 twice. Then, it will only play track 2 or 17 and if you skip it
plays those two and loops. If you try to play any other song on the
album you get Can't open.

Anyway, since ripping with EAC the only thing I have done to this album
is I have used J. River Media Center to give the tracks an individual
rating of 1-5, so I can play all songs rated 3 or better, for e.g. But
that is it.

I have a log file but it is too many characters to be accepted so I have

associated with failed attempts to play tracks off of the Counting Crows
album. Additionally, the beginning of this file seems to indicate I had
a bunch of errors during my rescan. I am not sure what all that is
about either.

slimserver where it can find my mp3 files.

The files are free of DRM so that should not be the problem.

[slim] Re: Problem: Can't open file from

2006-03-05 Thread Michaelwagner

Is there any chance you moved the files?

The message means it can't find (or open) the file where it expects the
file to be.

Another way this can happen is if you created a playlist and then
either moved the playlist to another directory or else moved some of
the files in the playlist.

If none of the above, check the file attributes to see if they've been
marked system or hidden or something.

Failing all of that, we'll need more information about your setup
before we can start to be of help.

We'll need to know what computer, what operating system, what version
of slimserver, where your music library is located, and then we can
start.

I said earlier the error message is 'Problem: Can't open file from' but
it is actualy 'Problem: Can't open file *for:*'

I do not use playlists but choose the mp3 file on the SB3 I want to
listen to.

File attributes are correct.

Computer specs:
Amd Athlon XP 2800
1024 MB Ram
OS: WinXP SP2
SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

All the mp3 files are stored on a external harddisk connected through
usb.

You've rescanned, including the clear library and rescan option?

Yes I did that more than once.

Whenever I've seen that error, it meant missing information in the DB
for that track.

[slim] Re: Problem: Can't open file from

2006-03-05 Thread Michaelwagner

Can you, from the web interface, see the song attributes for the songs
that fail?

I looked through all the ways that message can be created, and they all
seem fairly unlikely:
Certain failures in remote streaming (but you said these files were
local)
Certain types of conversion errors (but you shouldn't be converting)
DRM (but you said that doesn't apply)
The file has zero size or zero duration (but they play with Winamp)
Song is of unrecognized type ...

If you can see the song attributes, see if any of these get mentioned.

If not, do you know how to turn on debugging and get a log? If so, turn
on d_source and play one of these files, get the log and paste it into
this thread. Thanks.

Thanks, I did end up doing a delete and re-scan. I was hoping not to.
My library is currently 60k songs, therefore a fresh rescan takes a few
hours... Oh Well it seemed to fix the problem.

Thanks again.

Scott,
It's a known (and fixed) issue that might not be fixed in the version
of Slimserver you are running.

What happens is some tracks are not written to the DB, and thus SS ends
up not being able to play them. Once a directory gets messed up like
this, only a rescan will clean it up.

The workaround: From now on, to make sure all the new tracks get
written to the DB properly, just be sure to scroll through the entire
track listing once on a newly added folder before hitting play.
(i.e. hit down arrow until you come back to the first track again.)

Scolling though each track writes that track's info to the db. You can
confirm by searching for the new tracks or album. Once it's in the DB
it will show up in a search.

I am in the process of riping my entire CD collection to the SS in WAV
format. Several times a week, I will grab a handfull and rip them. In a
earlier version of SS you could schedule rescan's. Did they stop
supporting this feature, or was it moved?

Thanks

it is in the same place it's always been. server settings-plugins
It does a check for new and changed as opposed to a wipe library rescan.

Browse Music Folder will also pickup new files when you navigate into
that folder.

That's where the bug was. It would only pick up on songs that
displayed on the screen, and not all the songs in the folder. You
had to scan through the list of songs to make sure they all got written
to the db.
