Questions for the Toppy owners;

The Topfield 58000 has an ethernet connection right?

Can the Toppy added to my WiFi network by using my SB3 is a wireless

Can TAP's be installed over the network?

RE: [slim] Re: Slimp3 - a life changer!

2006-11-07 Thread Richard Scales
The TF5800PVR only has a USB port - lots of people network to this via
various devices which effectively provide the USB to Ethernet link including
small linux/windows PC's and other devices.

Assuming that you are connected in this way then yes you can then install
TAPs etc via the link as it is simply a matter of sending the required file
to the correct folder.

I run an SB1, SB2, SB3 and a Transporter. I also have a Toppy, but I
admit a) I have only transferred programmes off it to a laptop once (it
is slow) and b) I haven't installed any TAPs at all. In spite of that I
still love it. I'm beginning to feel a bit limited by the 80 GB hard
rive, but on the other hand that encourages good programme hygiene :)

How do you cope with the awful standard Toppy EPG? Given how frequently
programmes run late, it's almost obligatory to add some padding to the
record timers, and it's a pain to do that with the standard EPG. The
various 3rd party EPGs have automatic padding facilities.

The other TAP I couldn't do without is QuickJump, in order to rapidly
skip over adverts.

For anyone who may be considering the Toppy, I'll just make the point
that the USB connection is very slow. (I think it's described as USB2,
but it seems more like USB1 to me). So transferring recordings to a PC
takes a long time. I sometimes do it, using my laptop, but it's frankly
a bit of a pain. Also, after you've copied them across, although they
are in standard MPG format, the files also have a .REC wrapper
(program info, etc) which a lot of video software doesn't understand.
VideoReDo will handle them, though.

True that you can't copy recordings to PC, but you can archive to DVD
if required..

Personally if I like something enough to want to copy to DVD then (as
long as it's available) I'll just buy the DVD!

Of course SKY+ records the raw MPEG stream straight from the satellite

FLAC via your Squeezebox...

It's not really like FLAC from your squeezebox unless the FLAC was
transcoded from a lossy MP3. Most digital broadcasters compress
material significantly before transmission.

Incidentally, both Toppy and Humax record the raw MPEG stream too.

Copying to a PC is handy when you just want to lend a recording to a
friend. True you could just use a DVD recorder, but a PC provides much
better editing facilities.

As someone has already said, the Toppy also records the digital
stream.

The other MAJOR advantage over $ky+ is the ability to extend the
functionality of the Toppy by running custom software applications on
it. This has resulted in a sizeable community of software developers
dedicated to improving the box. A couple of them impressed Topfield so
much they are now employed directly!

I think Sky+ has to be the most useful gadget ever, closely followed by
my SB3/QNAP combination.

I have also just bought a Kiss DP600 DVD player which will play
recordings in high definition at full HD resolution via HDMI (I am not
talking about HD-DVD or BluRay). It is really good for playing avi
(MPEG-4) files, particularly as it has a USB socket that takes flash
drives. You can also stream directly from your PC (ethernet or
wireless). I have also read somewhere that it possible to stream
directly from a QNAP TS101 with a bit of tweaking. It's pretty cool!

The only problem is that it is a bit quirky and build quality is not
great.

are my PVR (an early Humax in my case) and my first SB2. Both
completely changed they way we do something (watching TV and listening

I am now getting to the point where I want to upgrade the Humax PVR to
something newer with a bigger disc, two tuners, and an easy means to
move the recorded files over to my PC for editing (NB - I don't
consider having to have an extra box to do USB-Ethernet connection
easy!). Maybe the next Toppy will be close enough to make me get my
credit card out.

Trouble is there are so many toys and upgrades out there and only so
much cash! Maybe I need a really good bonus, I can usually get
permission to spend that on almost anything...

Would I be right in thinking that you have got some device doing the
EthernetUSB connection at the Toppy end?
I have heard that the next version of the product will be networkable which
would open the door to all sorts of opportunities!

It might be interesting to know how many other Slimp3/Squeezebox users
 are
 also Toppy owners!

Me for one!

It's definitely in the same category as the Squeezebox i.e. if you have
the technical know-how and can be bothered spending time on it then it
will work wonders, but there are other devices out there that do
similar things and are more user friendly.. but aren't quite as good.

I actually use my SB2 as a wireless bridge to allow WLAN access to my
Toppy - they work very well together!
