[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-06-10 Thread Wombat

The benchmarks on the synology page refer to the network performance.
You wouldn´t need much performance but for the first time filling your
Diskstation.
The 101j uses a 266MHz Intel CPU and is the only one without any fan if
i am right. I use a WD2500JB HD and doesn´t get this thing hot even cold
when the HD goes to energy save mode. It just works flawless and really
fast for browsing albums.
There may be differences in the Slimserver webgui.
I only use it from my sofa browsing the Album folder and i am totally
satisfied with the speed. Rescanning and recreating my library with
~6000 taged files takes around 1 hour.
So setting it up, doing changes may be faster on other solutions but
just listening albums in the album library doesn´t need more
horsepower.

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-06-12 Thread Lance

Hi all,
thanks for the replies.

I'll try to get my hands on the DS-101G+, I havn't found it in any
shops in sweden, but I'll have another look.

A fan is not a problem for me, but I'd rather have a SATA than IDE
(reuse of HD). Because of that I'd rather go with the 106 or 106e than
the 101j. Is there any other reason that the 101j would be better than
the 106/106e to run SSODS?

I know that the upload/download performance is not important for the
operation of the slimserver, but I'm still interested in the 106 since
it has better performance than the 106e.
This can only mean better hardware (in my world) and if it's the same
CPU at the same speed (266Mhz) and the same gigabit chip as the 101j
and 106e I'm hoping that it has more memory. This can of course be
totally wrong, and I'd appreciate it someone had some info on the 106
hardware.
I've sent a request to synology about this, let's hope they reply.

Btw,
The README.txt of SSODS does not cover the 106, only the 101j, 101g+,
106e and the CS-406.

Thanks,
Lance

I have been told that the two are pretty much the same -- whatever that
means.

A German internet shop has both versions in stock:

'DS-106'
(http://www.informationsarchiv.net/shop/shop-artikel_101531.shtml) (260
€)and 'DS-106e'
(http://www.informationsarchiv.net/shop/shop-artikel_101527.shtml) (230
€)

According to these pages, the 106 is black (like 101g+), and the 106e
is white (like the 101j). Both have an MPC8241 CPU and 32 MB of RAM.

The difference I found is that the 106 has "Windows ADS/ NT4 Domain"
and "Secure FTP by SSL/TLS".

Maybe the 106 has an improved software configuration (Linux kernel) or
a faster disk interface.

And maybe the DS-106 is 'something completely different'
(http://webdb.scope.ne.jp/real_fleet/amadana/ds_106/).. ;-)

I updated the README.ssods.

Please let me know what Synology said.

The 64 MB of the DS-106 seems promising if that's correct. May I ask

I have never tried anything else but 6.2.1 and 6.2.2.

Perhaps there are some Perl modules missing.

Check the logfile and possibly enable telnet and start SlimServer
manually. That might output an error or so.

The command to start Slimserver is:

/volume1/SlimServer/bin/rc.slimserver start

(or "stop" to stop and "status" to show the status).

Can you please give us your opinion on the speed of the SlimServer web
interface. Is it running smoothly? How long does it take to browse into

Hello,

@alter_sack

I have no comparison to another type of diskstation, but from my point
of view, the performance is ok. Surely, it is a bit slower than an
2400+ Athlon with 512MB, but i think its better than th 32MB solution.
The webinterface runs smooth (but up to now, i have only about 1100
songs ripped).

Nevertheless, if you want to place the DS in your living room, you
should choose a place, where you can't hear it. It is comparable to a
PC.

@flip_flip

In your DS webinterface i saw a message regarding a problem with a perl
module. When i have got the time, i will try it again and will post the
logging. Actually, i am happy that the 6.2.2 is running without any
problems and that the installation was so easy.

Thanks to you, flip_flip.

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-06-18 Thread flipflip

You have to install that module and then see if there is another one
missing. Some modules depend on others.

As far as I know there are two types of Perl modules.

The first consist only of Perl source files and will therefore work on
any platform and do not need to be compiled. Just installed (that should
be possible on the DS).

Others come with binary libraries written in c for example. The
libraries (usually just one) have to be compiled in order to work on a
certain platform.

In your case the perl binaries come from Debian GNU/Linux so the needed
perl modules might be available on Debian mirrors. Check
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages and look in packages of the
"stable" distribution/release. The platform would be "PowerPC" (ppc).

The .deb packages is an "ar" archive. In Linux you can do "ar x
x.deb" and get a data.tar.gz which will contain the module and all
necessary files. These have to be copied to the right directory on the
DS.

A good resource for Linux on the DS is www.nslu2-linux.org. There is
also a page on SlimServer there. Also see the README.ssods.

Good luck and happy hacking! :-)

Hello,

today i tried it again to install SS 6.3 on the DS106. Now it seems to
be, that everything is working fine.

First of all i had to copy the Digest::SHA1 Perl module into the Perl
directory.

Then i copied the complete Slim directory and the Plugin directory into
the CPAN directory. For some reasons the Perl modules in these
directories are not included in the slimservers Search Path.

Now the Server is running on the diskstation. But actually the mem
usage is about 55Mb after scanning the Music libary. So i am happy that
i have received the DS106 and not the DS106e, because the web interface
seems to run still smooth.

After a restart, the mem usage is about 40Mb

Hi, I was happy when I saw that the DS-106 model also includes 64Mb RAM
as the previous 101g+, does anyone know how the different flash memory
sizes between the different models (16Mb for 101g+ and 2Mb for 106)
influence the performance? I can find both models here in Sweden with
similar price.

I reckon that the flash size has no influence on the performance. As far
as I know, it is used to store the boot loader, the kernel and an initrd
image. These will be loaded on boot and are not used for operation. But
I may be wrong about that.

Btw, there is a beta release firmware for the DS-101 (version 366)
which does not use up memory for a ram disk anymore. So the full 64 MB
are available for programs. SS therefore runs rather well compared to a
DS-101j. The PPC models may still be faster, though. At least the 64MB
variants.

Hi flipflip,

I contacted Synology and asked them how big impact the memory had in
terms of running a webserver for photosharing, additional to
slimserver. They said that the 64Mb compare to 32Mb would only be
usable if there are many different server connections (many people or
processes that acces the server simultanisly). That question then was
only related to the two PPC models 106e and 101g+.

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-07-03 Thread flipflip

Okay, I agree. I think that a single httpd process can handle one
connection and does not use a lot of ram. To serve static pages one
probably needs very little ram. The main part of the process' ram is
probably used by PHP et al. So, maybe 32 mb is enough for 10 (or so)
connections, then 64 mb would be sufficient for 20 connections.

Although if your PHP scripts use a lot of ram (i.e. to store lots of
data in ram) the numbers will be different.

Also, "too much" ram is not unused. It is used as cache and buffers
(input/output, program execution, etc.).

To conclude, I would go for a DS-106 or a DS-101g+. And if noise is an
issue, then a DS-101. And if money does not matter, I would get a
CS-406. :-)

I still do not know if an arm or a ppc processor at the same MHz speed
is more performant. The disk interface (SATA vs. IDE/ATA) probably has
an influence on the performance as well. Especially if you use a
database or read large junks of data from the disk in some way
(swapping, searching data).

Hi Michael,

Unless things have changed in the last month, there is a distributor in
Canada, by the name of supercom. I had a hard time finding the
retailers who use supercom, though, try bytewize computers. (or there
were a couple other on-line only retailers - I can find the links if
you like)
Let me know how you make out - I'm still thinking about a DS in the
back of my mind.

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-07-05 Thread hkpilot

Hi All,

I just purchased a Diskstation 106e (with a 250G Maxtor SATA HD) and a
Squeezebox v3. After spending sometime I finally managed to get SSODS
running (ssods-r1b3-ppc & Slimserver 6.3) on it smoothly.

About the performance, other than the initial scanning media files
process, the overall performance is quite good to me.

I got 5000+ MP3/WMA music library and it took an hour to build up the
database. I do feel it's a bit of slow when accsing the Slimserver
using the browser but good enough to me. Playing music using Squeezebox
is perfect, no jitting or any other problems related to server
performance.

The only problem is that the Squeezebox doesn't display Chinese
characters, I am trying very hard to figure it out.

That's true. But from what I've read here the older product is actually
a bit better (than the 101j)- 64MB vs 32MB, I figured it was generally
as good a choice as any (on the low $$ end).
I have a sinking feeling that there is nobody here currently dealing
with Synology, so newer product is going to be harder to get.

I've got a 101j and a 101g both running SSODS. The both play music and
browse folders just fine. I really can't tell any difference betwen
them for general usage. OK, the scan of my 920 albums was a bit faster
on the 101g but generally, you can't tell any difference.

I also use the 101g to store SD MPEG2 video and connect via SMB to
Zensonic Z500 NMP. I don't know of the 101j would be equal to that
task. I'd love to use the 101j for this aspect also because it is much
quieter than the 101g. Well, the unit is, the HDD is a different
matter.

Check http://oinkzwurgl.org/software/ssods/README.txt, section
"Hardware". The CS is perfect for running SlimServer on it.. fast SATA
disk interface, lots of memory (128 MB) and a rather fast CPU (400
MHz).

Depending on the harddisks you use, it will be rather noisy, though. I
suggest to use so called "streaming harddisks" (low RPM, optimized
noise management).

I can't think of a way that Tigerdirect could make it unsuitable for

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-08-21 Thread tomsi

I've read some of theese threads (in English), and tried to conclude
what I should buy... I've come to Squeezebox & Synology DS-101j (and
reuse my Samsung SpinPoint T133, 300GB, IDE/ATA 133). As far as I've
understood, it should be fairly easy to install SSODS which will feed
the Squeezebox with mp3's (in total approx 15000-2 songs), and I
can control the Squeezebox from the remote control or through a web
interface. Everything running silently. Is this correct, or have I
misunderstood something.

Thanks in advance.

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-08-21 Thread flipflip

Yes, that is correct.

Please consider that the 101j and the 106e have 32 MB of RAM where
other models (101, 106) have 64 MB. More memory greatly increases the
"speed" of the Squeezebox and the Slimserver. It does not affect
playing or any functionality, but searching, browsing and especially
the web interface will work much smoother (faster, quicker) on a 64 MB
model. The 101 has also an IDE interface but is not sold anymore. It's
even rather rarely sold on ebay et al.

I would not recommend a 101j or a 101e from that point of view.

The other models have SATA disk interfaces. You could put your harddisk
into an usb enclosure and use that as a backup media (attached directly
to the DS).

Silence depends on the harddisk and where the box is. The 101 and the
101j do not have a ventilator and should therefore probably not be put
into a cupboard (heat, convection). Then again, different harddisks
produce more or less heat (as far as I know, the more GB, the hotter).
The other DS models have a small ventilator. All DS models are rather
silent, but you probably want to put it somewhere where noise does not
matter (hallway, office, ..). "Ethernet over powerline" (devolo,
netgear and other products) are a good way to connect the DS and the SB
without additional cabling.

A CS-406 (also Synology) is worth a look as well. It has a faster CPU
(400 MHz, others: 266 MHz) and even more RAM (128 MB). The new CS-406e
is 266 MHz and 64 MB.

See also the README.txt of SSODS.

Bloody Synology. How many different versions are they selling?! I didn't
know about the 406e until this morning and about the 106j until right
now!

The Swiss importer (www.brack.ch) is usually rather precise about the
specs (they test it, they do not just copy&paste). They say it's a 32
MB with a 200 MHz CPU.

As I understand, "j" is "junior", i.e. IDE (and no eSATA) and 32 MB.
"e" is "light", i.e. 32MB (and a few software features disabled).

If performance is an issue and you have that many mp3s (bigger database
to scan), I would recommend a 64 MB Diskstation, that is a DS-106.

You could get a cheap small SATA disk and use your disk in an external
USB enclosure. SS(ODS) could play the "external" files as well and the
database would be on the internal disk.

It is a limited special edition only available through brack.ch.

AFAIK it's the same hardware as the 106 but with added RAM.

Brack.ch tells me that they only deliver to Switzerland.

There are some other online stores with brack.ch "behind" them, you can
identify these as the have the very same product descriptions as on the
brack.ch site. Maybe one of them sells this article as well and would
deliver it abroad. But maybe they are not allowed to do so. I don't
know.

Try preissuchmaschine.ch et al. Or google.ch and the "Seiten aus der

Hi - I'm looking for a reassuring "yes" about the combination of
Slimserver/CS-406, which is a lot cheaper and easier for me than
ordering an Infrant from the US with everything ready-installed :)

I'm not a unix guru or programmer but not an idiot either ;) (I have
access to a unix guru if necessary.) Is this combination now well
understood and will I be able to get Slimserver going easily enough if
I buy the CS locally? (I live in Norway.)

I currently have Slimserver runnning on an old PC that I want to throw
out. It has a 250GB Maxtor Onetouch external drive attached, where
about 16000 music tracks are located, IIRC about 160 GB.

I want to install Slimserver 6.3 on the CS-406, then attach the Maxtor
directly to it with USB, move all the files onto the CS. (If all goes
well, I will also move about 2000 photos onto it.)

I was just looking for a little reassurance, really :) I really want to
do something like this, firstly to let me get rid of the old PC,
secondly to give me some peace of mind about security of the music.
Thanks!

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?

2006-09-24 Thread vro75

Hi,

For those interested, the DS-101j can be found in France, sometimes
under a different name, for example "SohoNAS" at the following URL :
http://www.macway.com/fr/path/1/stockage/5/disque-dur-reseau-nas.html

Canadians looking for a DS101 should note that one is available on
eBay.ca at the moment.

FlipFlip: I think I'd say noise insulating *padding* rather than
matting, but what you wrote is completely understandable.

Lärmdämmmatten (boah! German's just great for catenating words), or simply
"Dämmungsmatte" or "Dämmmatte" (yes, 3xm).

Lärmdämmmatten

*Lärm*? And not *Geräusch*?

Yes, that's the first expression I've found. "Lärm" and "Geräusch" both
stand for "noise". While "Geräusch" is rather neutral, I'd consider "Lärm"
negative. Dealers selling those pads might think we don't like our
machine's noise. But that's quite off topic :-)

Is this combination now well
understood and will I be able to get Slimserver going easily enough if
I buy the CS locally? (I live in Norway.)

I would say: yes. I don't own a diskstation, but got hands on a friend's
machine. It was really a question of uploading a "patch" using the
diskstation's web interface. I have read quite a few positive feedbacks
about SSODS, but very little complaints or problem reports.

Really? Is it that simple, to get it up and running for
non-Linux/programming people?

Yes. No need to fiddle with the shell.
