Re: [slim] Recommendations for kitchen
Lots of good ideas here, but I don't think anything other than used Squeezbox gear ticks all the original poster's boxes. I can add my endorsement of the Libratone Zipp, which I use with the AirPlay bridge. I occasionally use the onboard volume control, and I assume other basic controls -- play, pause, etc -- work, but I don't think I've ever tried them. I usually control it with the Material app on my phone. Honestly, I can't imagine going back to the interface on the Boom or Radio for browsing my library, after using Material. Tusken, if you are still reading this, I know you've said that you do not want to take on a do-it-yourself project, and I understand. Reading these forums, you see articles about people doing amazing custom wordworking projects or designing new circuit boards. That's all beyond me. I can write a file to an SD card and insert the card in a device, or I can follow directions, using cut and paste to run specific commands in the command line. Fortunately for me, that's about all that's required to meet my needs. Faced with your needs, my solution would probably be a boom box with a Raspberry Pi Zero plugged into the aux input and dangling off the back, and an old smartphone gaffer-taped to the side for a control interface. Totally functional and unbelievably ugly! Do you know anybody who does enjoy tackling DIY projects? Somebody you could pay to assemble the necessary components in a single enclosure, which would then be a plug-and-play device for you. I can't think of any other way to achieve everything you want. For me, it does some things I don't want particularly (camera, the "Amazon World", at least on a device..), and doesn't (I think...) do some things I do need (battery, really good audio, 3.5mm audio in). There is a small set of dots on the touch display that shows you which favourite you have currently selected. Press once for the last one (since boot or 1) tap again for 2, again for 3 etc and then at 5 it cycles back around to 1. To play from LMS you just select a track to play (in LMS's UI), and the speaker will switch to 'AirPlay' - from there you can press the 'bird' icon (on the speaker) to play/pause, and use the prev/next buttons (again on speaker). To play a stream you press a 'heart' icon (on the speaker), and it flashes 1 of 5 small dots to let you know which favourite - you press the 'heart' to go to the next. If LMS (AirPlay) was active then LMS is paused and the stream plays. To resume LMS playback you need to use an LMS controller, but the speaker will automatically switch. Hope that makes sense. *Material debug:* 1. Launch via http: //SERVER:9000/material/?debug=json (Use http: //SERVER:9000/material/?debug=json,cometd to also see update messages, e.g. play queue) 2. OK - next option ... I have a Libratone Zipp (the original one not the Zipp 2 and not a mini) that I bought 2nd hand for around 45GBP including shipping (it is heavy). It has a touch sensitive control on the top and by touching the illuminated heart symbol you can pick one of 5 presets. They are direct stream URLs that I entered via their app - LMS does not need to be involved. It also supports Apple AirPlay and works with LMS via AirPlay Bridge (it also has UPnP but I did not try that). It even has Bluetooth - so you can play to it from a phone. Oh - and it has a 3.5mm socket so that you can play from other devices via a cable. and not to forget ... a USB socket that can play from a USB disk or Apple device (not tried this). The internal battery runs for at least 2 hours (in my case) and when running from the power socket it also charges the battery. I might have been lucky in that the old battery in it still holds charge. It is a bit taller than 2 stacked toilet rolls and weighs a lot more - and puts out a lot of noise for its size. I think that the Zipp 2 has Alexa built-in - and goes for more. Check carefully for the other features in case they have changed over the years. I use it outside in the summer - and I found it had a WiFi range that was a bit less than a modern phone. For what I paid for it ... it is very good. Going for used equipment can be a bit of a lottery - but this is one that I was pleased with. Re: [slim] Recommendations for kitchen
I'm on the lookout myself for a small-form, rather portable "kitchen" device to replace (and hopefully upgrade, in terms of audio quality)a SB Radio. As others have noted, if I am prepared to control the functions from either LMS itself or from a phone / pad app, then there are many choices. As ever, the best sounding one I've had a chance to actually try - surprisingly, to me, a friend's little Sonos Roam - had lots of advantages (good battery, chic, small) but a huge drawback (no 3.5mm input, which for me is a necessity for assorted reasons.). But there are others However, I wonder if, as in my case, "family circumstances" matter? Assorted family members want to push a button on the device, and get either radio or music steaming service output. And they prefer those button presses to be on determined presets, rather than scroll menus. And always available, without any messing about. SB Radio and indeed Touch (I've never had a Boom or a Transporter) do that; and they also allow me to fiddle and fine tune the system, plus to play a pretty large server-based private music / audio drama collection. But, if I go to one of the many systems that allow audio via LMS and eith AirPlay or UPnP bridges, whereas that's fine for me, there will be a Family Revolt !!! They are just not doing LMS or assorted Apps as control. So, I'm now looking at things like the AudioPro Addon series, which - so far as I can see - can be set up to be controlled by buton presses and presets from the box itself, but which also can have LMS-sourced stuff easily pushed to them via a plug-in, by those who are handy with all that. The question is, can the device do both at once, without extensive "re-setting"? We do not want family screams of "who's been messing with my kitchen radio gain". So I can at least browse my music library that way? > > I'm trying to "read between the lines" and I may be missing something or misinterpreting what you've said. I've trimmed the above quote in an attempt to focus on your specifications. It appears to me that you want a one-piece device that is plug-and-play, other than some configuration on the device itself, and which includes a control interface that will allow you browse your library. Additionally, you do not want to upgrade your Vortexbox or the LMS running on it. I'm guessing that you would prefer not to have to do anything that requires you to use the command line. If that is essentially correct, I think your best and perhaps only option is to acquire another used Boom, or perhaps, if stereo is not important in the kitchen, a used Radio. The problem with used equipment is that you don't know how long it will continue to work. At this point, the same is true of an outdated version of LMS. If you are only playing music from your local collection, you might be able to continue doing that indefinitely. If you use online sources, it is quite possible that they will stop working with older versions of LMS. All of this is strictly my opinion, of course, and we can hope that someone will be able to provide better advice. But so far, I haven't seen any suggestions that attempt to meet all your requirements. Some good options have been suggested, such as a DAC32 connected to a speaker, but that's not a one-piece device, and it does not include a control interface. If you are willing to use your phone or a tablet as a controller, many more options are available. The Airplay speaker that someone suggested, for instance, could be used with the Airplay Bridge plugin installed in LMS. The Airplay Bridge even allows Airplay devices to be synchronized with other players, which the UPNP Bridge does not. My suggestion is that you prioritize your wants and needs. Which of the items on your checklist are most important? Which ones would be be willing to consider doing without? With a little compromise you might find there are more options. If you don't feel you can compromise on any of those points, your choices may be limited to used Squeezebox products. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players, occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic. All you need to install a plugin is to be able to load http://:9000 in your web browser. Once there, you would use the Settings link at bottom right, then go to the Plugins tab on the Settings page. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players, occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic. [slim] Recommendations for kitchen
Hi Long time squeezebox user here. I have several touches hooked up to amps and speakers in the house, and a dedicated vortexbox server running LMS. 1 boom in use upstairs. After a kitchen extension, I would like to introduce some networked audio into the kitchen, but this will need to consist of essentially one smart speaker type device. Certainly only a one box solution. Forgive me, but I really dont want to build a custom made device. Really I want an updated version of the boom, which doesnt exist! Are there any devices out there that can be configured to work with lms? The dreaded sonos for example? Worst case scenario, would one of the more intelligent smart speakers be able to at least see the upnp server that vortexbox has, in addition to LMS? So I can at least browse my music library that way? Any suggestions and advice sincerely appreciated. tusken's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39322 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115478 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
