I just assumed he was referring to the usual practice of most card
companies to add a handling fee on top of the exchange rate. Usually
it's around 2 or 3% (with a minimum charge of around £2).

Yeah, the exchange rates still aren't the base rate, but most cards are
the base rate + some extra amount + handling fee.

With Nationwide you don't get charged the handling fee. It's one of the
few, if possibly the only UK issuers who don't charge the fee. Hence I
use the Nationwide credit card for all my international purchases and
the debit card for cash withdrawals overseas.

Re: [slim] Shipping to United Kingdom

Agree with Deadkenny on Parcelforce. On one occasion they put a card
through someone else's door and then sent the package back to Hawaii
when I did not collect it. Needless to say they sent it back surface
mail but it did arrive back with the maker, three months later.

My UPS package (a Sutherland Ph.d phono stage) referred to earlier
arrived today. UPS rang me on Friday and took customs payment via CC
over the phone - 23% of price - ouch!

Happily I have been able to find a Transporter in the UK - ordered
Friday, here this morning. Excellent service from Media Home.

 - Delivery to the UK is about £20 for the express option (thanks
Ur[s]uS), and should arrive in 2 days.
Express options will almost certainly attract customs fees as it will
cause it to go by courier and they are stricter on applying fees. In
some cases (e.g. FedEx) you get the bill in the post weeks or months
later.

USPS *should* come via regular RoyalMail but it depends how it's routed
I think. Express USPS however will go via Parcelforce and they will
charge customs fees and the fee is extortionate compared to non-express
(something like £18).

Also ParcelFarce will almost certainly loose the package, or return it
to the sender after claiming they left a card but didn't and not
bothering to wait the mandatory week before returning it. Plus they're
a nightmare as their depots are only open in work hours, are miles away
from anywhere and have little or no customer parking. Then you have to
try and get service as you stand at the desk for ages pressing the
bell, then they take half an hour trying to find the package (only to
then say they can't find it).

Not that I hate ParcelFarce much of course!

If the parcel comes via regular RoyalMail there's a higher chance of it
avoiding customs. Though note if it does get hit, RoyalMail have now
increased their handling fee to £8. That's twice the price it was
before and a rise somewhat massively higher than inflation! Oh and
they've cut back the opening hours in some of their collection depots.

With RM you risk the parcel just being dumped on the doorstep
regardless of any need for a signature and the value of the item.

RM of course ParcelFarce, so no wonder I hate them also.

If you can use DHL, I believe (but I'm not certain) that you can get a
reduced fee as a personal importer who only buys the odd item now and
again from overseas.

Re: [slim] Shipping to United Kingdom

2007-05-10 Thread simbo

OK, after some investigation, here's the lowdown...

- With the strong pound against the dollar, the base price looks very
attractive; $299 works out at about £150, but read on...

- Your credit card company will add a handling fee, probably about
3.5%, about £5 on an SB3.

- Delivery to the UK is about £20 for the express option (thanks
Ur[s]uS), and should arrive in 2 days.

- SB3s fall under computer peripherals so I believe do not incur
import duty.

- They do, however, incur VAT at 17.5% on the full amount (including
delivery charge). This works out at about £28.

- The courier (UPS) will almost definately expect you to pay the VAT at
the door. You may be lucky and not be expected to pay then, but you may
receive a letter later asking you to cough up a few months later.

- Here's the killer; UPS charge an additional £11 handling fee to
cover the cost of forwading your VAT/duty to the Inland Revenue.

So, all in all, purchasing a black SB3 might not work out any cheaper
that buying it from a UK supplier, however...

- If you take up the White Sale offer, it could save you £20 or more.
No UK suppliers are discounting their white SB3s to the best of my
knowledge.

- If you're willing to take the risk of not incurring VAT/duty then you
could save £50 or more. I personally think it's unlikely you'll be this
luckly.

- The next batch of SB3s to come into the UK through supplers will
almost definately be Logitech-badged. If you buy direct (especially if
you buy the white model) you may get an SD branded one.

If you use a courier (UPS, Fedex, DHL etc) you will definitely be
charged duty, either at the door or by letter. If you use USPS you
could get lucky as Parcelforce in the UK tend to be swamped and a lot
of stuff is waived through. Downside is Parcelforce no longer deliver
to your door unless you have paid any duty charges (assuming they
decide to charge you). This means that once the item is received by
your local office they write you a nice letter asking for payment. You
can do this by phoning or over the web (do not choose the web option as
it will be days before the local office receives notification of
payment) and then go and collect the item or have it delivered.

Your estimate of two days via courier is very optimistic - more like 5
working days.

Every SB3 will be badged 'Logitech' before long - a firmware change is
all that is required to change the display which will probably come
with the next release of SS.

I have bought 1 SB3 directly from SD in the US and one from Ebuyer very
recently. The one from the US was very expensive in comparison. You
pay VAT not only on the SB3 but the delivery also. SD use Fed Ex to
deliver and they always collect the Tax. Not only that some has to be
in to collect it. Can't remember the exact figured but it was over
£215

But, it was a lovely all black one!

I bought my second from Ebuyer for £190 inc delivery (when for the
cheap skate free delivery), however is was a black with the silver
bottom half, but was a UK spec power supply.

You pays yer money and takes yer choice. Either way I am happy with
two SB3s and a stonkin' system!

Hi,

For the record, over the last year I have bought separately an SB3,

excellent, both for pre-sales and support. Jon Nelson at Ripcaster even
rang me at home to clarify one point about the Qnap! I have seen a
couple of other postive comments here too.

All kit is running problem free and always has - the secret is to get a
setup that works, and then leave it alone, if you want close to consumer
electronics reliability. If you want to fiddle, then fair enough but
expect some challenges.

My setup is QNAPTS101 1.2.1 0822T/Slimserver 6.3.1/SB3/Stello DA100

Another thumbs up for Advanced MP3 Players. Might be a little more but
the service is great.

As said, importing is likely not much better if you get hit by
vat/duty. There's a very slim chance you might get away with it but I
doubt it with a product like that.

Also will Amazon.com ship electronics to the UK anyway? I know stuff
like software they refuse to ship here. I thought the same was true of
electronics.

Another point is you'll get a US adapter with it and you might find the
warranty isn't valid in the UK.
