But surely such people do have a computer, and SS/SC works perfectly
well on a regular desktop computer - in fact it's usually severe
overkill.

I've always used SS on my regular workaday desktop, never a problem
even with all the other programs, firewalls, etc.

I agree - I suspect SB is a product just too clever for the high
street. Try describing what it does beyond stream music to someone who
only owns an ipod. Squeeze Center / Squeeze Network sound like cultish
gibberish to the average unconverted heathen. At least until they see
what they can do with them.

But a NAS option like with the Sonos would be great. Of course I cannot
appreciate how incredibly complicated that would be to implement!

Really nice idea and SD used to sell a ReadyNAS NV+ bundled with two
SB3. I do not know if one could call for help from SD Tech Support, but
that would be nice. Only real issue I see with this route is that the
technology and drives are getting cheaper all the time and people are
going to say, "Why do I need another computer, I already have one".
Then there is the cost, it pushes it above the Sonos.

And that is what we that understand are for if we can help. When Peggy
switched from dial-up to DSL, I had to go over and hook it up. A
wireless network with a router is way over her head if she can't even
do a DSL connection. Her husband is a 58-year-old Lawyer so he hasn't
got a clue (IT handles any PC issues that come up for him). They want a
few Squeezeboxes and I can help make it happen. Plus there is an added
bonus, they will not get frustrated, have to call tech support, then
not understand them because they don't have a clue.

I agree.
The simple solution to this "problem" is to sell a SD NAS with
Slimserver preinstalled. Connect this box to your router and then
simply copy/paste the music from the pc to the NAS.
There are allready som companies who sell NAS with Slimserver

Better vs. Cheaper is not what killed BetaMax. What killed BetaMax was
they did not believe in a place called Blockbuster or all the "Adult"
titles that were put on VHS. If one wanted to go in the back room or
behind the curtain for the "special" movies, one had to own a VHS.
Porno killed BetaMax!

People that want to play MP4s and also don’t think there is any
difference in an MP3 played on an iPod or their home stereo ARE going
to buy the cheapest player they can, period. At this time that is ROKU
and as they keep losing market share they will keep dropping their
price. Kia is a car as is Hyundai. You do not see BMW, Audi, and
Porsche making crap just to compete price wise because they sell cars
also.

Logitech is doing the right thing. They are setting the standard and
bringing the market to them. The word is out and once anybody you talk
to about it can buy SB3 at any big box store, lookout. We had a few
friends over for dinner last night and I had a background music
playlist running before, during, and after dinner. While we were having
our after dinners drinks in the living room, somebody asked if I burned
a bunch of MP3s to play all night. I said no the CD palyer is not even
on and ask who their favorite Artist was. They said Van Morrison and I
asked what song. I played it in seconds and they asked if I could make
it play all Van Morrison songs, which I did. Anyway, two of the couples
we had over want my help setting up Squeezebox networks in their homes
before Thanksgiving.

Maybe because it's better?

I've never been to Fry's, and there are none here, so I never will, but
say they sell speakers. (They probably don't, IIRC they sell computer
equipment). Say there are $15 "white box" speakers and $300 JBL
speakers. Why would anyone buy the JBLs over the $15 no-name ones?
Why would anyone spend $285 more for something that does the 'same'
thing?

Maybe because they're better...

Re: [slim] The Squeezebox finally made it to Fry's

2007-11-16 Thread radish

This has been discussed quite a bit, but in summary (SB3 vs M1001):

Yes, the DAC is much better quality in the SB3. It also doesn't
resample everything to 48kHz like the Roku.
Roku screen is 280x16, SB3 is 320x32.
Roku RAM is 16mb, SB3 is 64MB (more memory == less skipping)
Roku only does 802.11b, SB3 does b/g.
SB3 can act as a wireless bridge, Roku can't.
Roku THD: -90dB, SB3: -93.5dB
Roku SNR: >96dB, SB3: >100dB
I don't think Roku players can be sync'd.
Roku supports Slimserver very poorly, otherwise you're stuck with WMC
which is MUCH less useful. For me, slimserver is key.

Thanks for rephrasing my questions :-)
Really, I'm wondering... Why is the SB3 more than twice as expensive?
Because the dac is better? What if I have an outboard dac, or use the
digital out?
Because SB3 works flawlessly with Slimserver? But what about Roku's
support of wmp and iTunes? Must be a few people out there using iTunes
who'd like a cheap player for the house?
What else? I'm looking for an additional player for my bedroom, so I
guess I should find some answers. Maybe I can get away with a Roku and
save $170...

I'm sure the sentiment here is to have something hand-built with the
enthusiasm of a young team excited by their invention. How much more
satisfying is the purchase when something is hand-crafted, rather than
being manufactured on an assembly line by uncaring underpaid workers,
or worse being robotically assembledthis is ceratinly the reality,
however.
The squeezebox just hit a couple of computer distributors in OZ, with a
noticeable price drop, and propped on a shelf alongside the ipods and
zunes...

Saw the Logitech branded SB3 at my local Fry's today. Price was still
$299, despite being assembled totally in China. The box was pretty
slick, and visually appealing.

It was sitting right next to the Roku Soundbridge and the Roku radio.

My prediction was a cheaper SB for the retail outlets. It seems
Logitech is confident they will sell at $299.

With the word of mouth recommendations its been getting for the past
couple of years, they'll probably sell a bunch 'em!
