The Speltzes advertise and sell on Audiogon too. Try contacting them through their email link on that site. I get the impression they're a husband-and-wife operation (Paul and Judy?), so, yeah, if they happen to be on vacation or experiencing an unexpected family crisis or something I doubt there's staff to monitor communications. Yes, it is the norm for manually entered or swiped transactions, which is what most mom pops would do. But systems which accept orders for physical shipped goods should not capture immediately when the user enters their card info, and to my knowldge none do. That would be really bad for a lot of other reasons. I totally missed the bit about paypal, and thought that he had placed a credit card order. In any case, it's not applicable to this situation. Actually, I do not think they have intentionally ripped me off. A $100.00 Fiji vacation...I'll wait for the postcard. According to Paypal, the buyer has the option to to file a claim against the transaction and therefore is mediated by them (Paypal) and refund issued if claim is judged valid. I have the claim filed. Not as worried about the $$$ as I am irritated at the proprietors wasting my time. ok, I'm off to purchase some magnet wire and start my own flakey business. I had dropped an email to David Speltz about the negative press over here, just cause I had previously only heard good stuff about him and their cables. Just got a response from him: Dale, I very much appreciate the heads up. I understand his concern, as we did disappear for 4 days. We have a very close family member in the hospital on Toronto Canada. We simply dropped everything and went up to visit her. We arrived home late last night, and will be playing catch-up all this week. If he calls 651-735-0534 today, there is a good chance Judy will be available to answer his call. It would be great if you could convey this info to the form, as I do not have the time to chime in. Thanks! This will ship tomorrow, Wednesday, via USPS Priority Mail, delivery is 3 business days. I apologize for the delayed response. I recently placed an order for 2 sets of 5' speaker cables at the Speltz website. They took the money and dissapeared. I have not recieved an order confirmation. They do not respond to my (2) inquiries. I have no idea what the status of the transaction may be. I placed a dispute with Paypal for cancellation and refund. Re: [slim] The vacuum that is anti-cables
There are two steps to a credit card transaction, authorization and then capture. In the authorization step, the funds are verified and reserved for up to 30 days. It's not until the capture step that the funds are actually transferred. It is strictly against the terms of their Visa/MC merchant agreement to capture funds before shipping - that is the main reason that the two-step process exists. Furthermore it is very unlikely that this would be set up to happen automatically, so they're not on vacation. If you've been unable to reach them, you should call your bank and issue a chargeback immediately. If you think the merchant has deliberately defrauded you then it would be a good idea to also get a new card issued. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34517 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Skunk wrote: Not sure what if anything this changes, but paypal seems to play by their own rules Yes, PayPal was designed to make it possible to do money things without having the 'merchant agreement' that Sean mentions. Sean talked about normal credit card processing, which has strictly defined rules. And PayPal was designed to be more flexible and handle small amounts. A real Visa/Mastercard merchant account charges the merchant too much money to make small payment amounts financially feasible. OT: Visa and/or Mastercard could change this if they wanted. There is no reason that an all electronic transaction should cost large portions of a dollar, when it is just bits moving from one computer to another. But as long as they face no real competition, the merchants, and the consumers have no choice but to pay. -- Pat Farrell http://www.pfarrell.com/ ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I imagine they make more money selling those cables than not selling them (and the margin is probably 50% or more). I'd keep trying to contact them - as Skunk says, $75 is not much for them to retire to Fiji. Have there been any other reported problems recently on other forums? My experience with them was fine.
