Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-04 Thread ModelCitizen

I'd avoid the Receiver. Although it does not have as many problems as
the Controller it is still nowhere near as reliable as the Classic
(SB3). So, if you are price (and time) sensitive definitely go for the
Classic. Otherwise I'd wait for the Touch (with it's lovely colour
screen).

You've made the correct choice with iPeng, avoiding the troublesome
Duet, so don't screw up your track record by getting a Receiver! :-)

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-04 Thread ajkidle

I understand why the Controller gets a bad rap, but why the Receiver
does too is beyond me. I've been running 2 of them for over a year
without issue. One wired, the other wireless. Only problems I've had
have been related to weak WiFi signal, surely more a function of my
junky router and placement, not the fault of the Receiver.

If your setup would benefit from a display, absolutely go for the
mature design of the Classic. Do you really want to put the new Touch
at your parents' place? Hopefully it will be bug free, but it's new so
who knows how stable it will be (at least initially.) If you don't care
about the display, the Receiver is a solid choice.

[slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread hungarianhc

Hi All,

So I LOVE my new Squeezebox setup in my apartment. I have a couple
Squeezebox Radios, and i'm just totally in love with these things. I'm
upgrading my home server to a SheevaPlug next week, and I'm pretty
excited to set this thing up :-).

In any case, I'd like to set my parents up with a Squeezebox setup this
Christmas, but I'm not sure which device is best for them. As of now,
they have a stereo system with speakers all over the house. The speaker
wire is actually run throughout the house and it all comes in once
central spot. In that spot, they currently have an Audio receiver hooked
up to a CD player. The receiver then outputs to a speaker terminal,
basically a hub, where all the speakers are connected to. You can push
the buttons on the hub to turn the speakers on / off throughout the
house. What's the best way to integrate squeezebox products into the
current setup? Thanks!

2009-11-03 Thread hungarianhc

After some research, looks like the duet is the way to go... right? but
then i just have the duet plug into the receiver... so I lose the
ability to control multiple zones - the whole house will just be one
zone, but it will still work.

Do her (and yourself) a favor and use a Classic instead.
You need the controller or Net::UDAP to set up the receiver and that's
not for non-techies.
Plus the display is nice and you can currently get a Classic at almost
the same price as the Receiver.

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread JeffHart

The easiest way would be go with either a Duet (Receiver), Classic or
Touch connected to the reciever AUX inputs and then control the speakers
from the central location.

Otherwise you'd need to place Receivers, Booms, Classics, Touch's or
Radios every where you want music. The Boom and Radio are self
contained, you'd need amps or powered speakers to accompany the others.
You might put a switch in the rooms to allow you to switch from the
central receiver to the local amp using the existing speakers.

If they don't have a server or NAS available, I'd recommend starting
with the Touch when it's available and use an external USB drive for the
library. If they don't have a centralized remote solution, you might
consider the Controller. Then you or they can expand the system.

Keep in mind you need a Controller to configure the Receiver, it can't
be done with iPeng. You can also use the net udap tool, but it's not
very user friendly. If you're comfortable with nerdy computer stuff
there are guides available within the forums. I don't think this tool is
officially supported by Logitech, but it does work. (it did for me, at
least.)

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread Ikabob

I think that your parents would love having their very nice stereo
system hooked up with the Touch (when it comes out). I know that there
will be some new bugs with it but they will be ironed out in time , I am
sure. I have a similar setup as you described for your parents and I
love the fact that my stereo can blast music to all parts of our
home...even though each room cannot be individually volume controlled. I
use the itouch with ipeng as a remote controller and I find that it
really works well. So, I vote for the Touch for your parents...if you
can wait.

I actually have the SB3 and I am eagerly awaiting the Touch for another
area of our upstairs. The only problem I have with my system as it
stands (SB3,Radio,Boom), is the sync on MSB.com is inconsistent. At
times it is right on and then at other times it is not right on. But
that is off the subject. I love the system.

If it were me, I would start them with an SB Classic (SB3).

You didn't say what kind of computer and WiFi setup they have so a
wired SB3 would make things easy.

Re: [slim] What device(s) would you recommend for my parents' setup?

2009-11-03 Thread epoch1970

I won't ask about the age of your parents. But it looks that their setup
is reliable.
I suggest a reliable server, this means either the Touch (fingers
crossed !) or something like a SheevaPlug. Low power, single purpose,
always-on, that will give them excellent quality of service and no
second thoughts about wasting electricity.

Unless you can hijack the audio switch, or you can add
remote-controlled on/off switches in the rooms, and have all this
controlled by a plugin, I would suggest the Boom. (I hear the Radio
sounds great, and it can operate on batteries, but I fear its small
screen.)

I love my Boom, and my parents love their, more than the SB Classic
they have also.
The Boom can add *great sound* to any room where there is no audio yet.
And better, it will sync with the main system.

(For the Boom, I recommend considering using PeterW's 'contextmenu' and
'saverswitcher' plugins. Out of the box, this combination allows to use
the big knob to control volume after briefly pressing it. Press again
and you go back to menu navigation mode. I think this is known as
grandma mode, here and there.)

So here's the question - She will likely be using iPeng to control the

going with the Classic v. Receiver? Either way she will be using
external speakers. Thanks! I'm really excited to get this for her.

I agree with Pippen and Iphone, the classic seems to be the most
reliable. I've had one for over 2 years without any problems other than
when I've created the problem. I really like it and I am really sad

Just the display. Although I like my Classic, the Receiver also has
been very reliable. And if you wire it you are unaffected by it's
(somewhat worse) WiFi reception.
