Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2009-02-24 Thread Nonreality

I first came up with the Nonreality name back in 95 or 96 when I was
part of a 3d world called Alphworld. It was a place that you had
avatars and could build homes and chat with people from all over the
world. I had started with a different name but thought that Nonreality
was a perfect name for a person in a made up world on the internet. Now
Alphaworld has become Activeworlds last I knew. It was a lot of fun for
about 4 years but then the money making machine came along and it became
less fun. As far as my avatar here, it was just a picture that I came
upon in the nonreality of the internet and liked it. I'm not quite as
old as it, but it seems to fit me well. If you see other Nonreality's
out there it is usually me. I'm always amazed that 90% of the time it
is still available for me. It's hard to find a screen name that you
can still get after 13 years.

PS Nice thread by my friend Goodsounds. Lots of interesting posts came
from it.

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2009-02-23 Thread Dogberry2

-Dogberry- is a character from -Much Ado About Nothing-. The other
name/handle I've used on purely social boards for twenty-five years
(since the days of local BBSes) carries a persona that I felt didn't
really fit for more serious and technical forums, so I latched onto
Dogberry for places like this. When I got here, I was startled to see
that the name was unavailable, because that had never happened before.
But when I looked, I found that the other Dogberry was someone who had
only one post, years ago, and apparently wasn't coming back. So I
decided that meant the name was up for grabs again, and slapped a "2"
on the end so I could register. Not a terribly exciting story, is it?

Somebody already had Transporter and about the next twenty user names I

iPhone in the user name and it wasn't taken.

Was going to use the FLAC Logo as my Avatar, but somebody was already

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2009-02-23 Thread Moonbase

Why "Moonbase"?

History:

- -Not- from "Moonbase Alpha One". (I only came to know about that
  years later.)
- Actually from a 1969 U.K. TV series called "UFO". My parents
scolded me, I loved it. The "Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence
Organisation" (SHADO) was located beneath a movie studio in England,
and they had a -Moonbase- – all the girls had pink hair and
  silver outfits.
- Later on my nick for citizens band radio – »Stardust« was
  already taken, so I remembered UFO’s »Moonbase« and it’s
been my nick ever since …

Since that time (for almost fourty years now!) I’ve been
constantly using this nickname all over the place.

Later refinements and new explanations arose, like:

- Watched Neil Armstrong setting foot onto the Moon live – the
day after my tenth birthday. I then believed that manned spaceflight
would become reality much faster. (Not realizing it was mainly
politics that time.) So I was somehow expecting a -real- Moonbase.
- Always believed that standing back two steps (or 238,714 miles, in
this case) sometimes just gives a better perspective... (From up
there, I could never understand the concept of little ants crawling
on this little globe’s surface, them taking a pencil, drawing
lines on the surface they call »borders« and fighting for these with
their lives. I still don’t get it. No wonder the Aliens stay
away from a backwardly planet like ours…)
- Some think I’m much too idealistic and have too romantic
ideas, like everyone could live in peace with each other, money that
goes into military should go into food, a healthy planet, and manned
spaceflight, and there could always be »win-win situations« between
suppliers and customers. Well, I tried to do my share in business
life, but I fear it was way too little. So they said I’m like
"the man in the moon", meaning something like a dreamer here.

The avatar is actually me, sitting on a bollard in some small harbour
in Northern Germany. For fun, I sometimes claim it was photographed
while I was doing a radio show, but actually I’m just watching a
seagull. And dreaming of a better world :-)

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2008-11-28 Thread tamanaco

Tamanaco (Cacique Venezolano) - Venezuelan Indian Chief that along with
his fighting men resisted the Spanish conquest. Soon after his warriors
defeated the Spaniards in a battle, he was captured and sentenced to
death. Rather than being hung, he choose to fight to death a Spanish
fighting dog bare-handed. This last act of courage inspired his people
to continue to resist the conquest. After his death Venezuelan native
warriors yelled his named before going into battle.

Not much is known or written about the heroes that resisted the Spanish
conquest. An embellished and lopsided version history was written by the
victors... but the great struggle and heroism of the defeated was
remembered by the natives and passed down by word of mouth to my
generation... TAMANACO!!!

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2008-11-20 Thread Brian Ritchie

My name is my name - didn't think I'd have anything to hide. By now, if
ID theft becomes a problem, it would probably be easier to change my
name by deed poll :-)

My avatar: I should start by pointing out that I'm not a Prince fan at
all. I think I have a copy of Purple Rain somewhere in the archive, but
that's it. I don't even have 3121, and have never heard it. But since
my teens (way back long back) I've been using "1312" as my logo - the
13 looks a bit like a B, the 12 a bit like an R; so when I saw the
Prince album image at about the same time as I was wondering what to
use for an avatar, it just seemed obvious.

12 years ago, I took home a cat from the pound: an evil evil black cat.
The pound actually tried to tell me not to take her because she was
mean. She spent the first week growling at me whenever I looked at
her. So she was named Snarlycat. (And it turns out she was actually a
very sweet cat, she just wanted life her way... She had the most
impressive arched-back black cat hiss, too, and was brilliant: it took
her less than 10 seconds to figure out laser pointers, and she would
never chase them, just look at me with a "why do you keep pointing that
thing on the floor next to me?" look.)

And since I usually played Dwarves in MUDs at the time, I named my
online persona after her.

My favorite reading! I always wanted my son to be just like Calvin.
Luckily for me, he isn't :-)

My name is fairly obvious. My family has no imagination so my
grandfather was Samuel Edward, my dad Howard Nathaniel, me Howard
Samuel and my brother Nathaniel Edward. Apparently creativity either
never existed or died out generations ago.

aubuti = older brother in the Setswana and Sesotho languages, spoken
mostly in Botswana, Lesotho, and South Africa. It is not restricted to
blood relatives, but is also used among friends of similar ages.

I've lived in southern Africa off and on for the past 20+ years, first
in Botswana (1982-85) where my friends commonly addressed me as aubuti
(ah-oo-BOO-tee) and I addressed them in kind (ausi for women). For some
reason it struck me as a good username when I started on the Ubuntu
forums about 3 years ago ('Ubuntu also has southern Africa origins'
(http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct)). And it carried over to
other things I started doing around the same time, including this
forum, Last.fm, and maybe a few others.

My avatar? I don't know, Calvin and Hobbes just always cracked me up,
and especially when my son was 6-8 years old and really wanted to *be*
Calvin. The hard part was choosing *which* image to use, but the
snowmen are great. I've had thoughts of rotating the C&H images, but

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2008-11-19 Thread norman12

Years and Years ago while setting up my first ever email account I
thought Joe90 would be a cool name - no luck already taken, as was joe1
to joe100 etc. OK I thought, I'll use my own name - no luck already
taken. After trying many others to no avail I had the idea there can't
be many Norman's wired up to the internet - there was - Norman1,
Norman2 etc but Norman12 was free and it's stuck.

Real name Jez.

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2008-11-19 Thread funkstar

This has come up (i think twice) on 'Hexus' (http://forums.hexus.net)
(another forum I frequest a lot). And to be honest I can't really
remember how I settled on Funkstar. I did used to have it as a domain
name as well, but don't currently.

The current avatar is an edited cover by 'The Twilight Sad'
(http://www.myspace.com/thetwilightsad). Previous avatars have been
'Domo-Kun' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domo_kun) and the other is one
of two paitings by local artist called 'Ian Carby'
(http://www.carbyart.net/) that I have.

Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2008-11-19 Thread maggior

Given my first name, you can figure out my last from my username. No,
no relation to the baseball player Joe DiMaggio - especially since my
name isn't DiMaggio (I get this all of the time for some reason).
maggior was my first login name I got as a software professional and
I've used it since when I can.

An interesting (and to me more interesting) addition to this post would
be to describe the origin of your avatar. I'll start...if you are a
Porcupine Tree fan (they are one of my all-time favorite bands), you
already know it - it is the CD cover for their recent CD Nil
Recurring.

Nonreality and pfarrell are avatars I've always wondered about...pix of
long lost relatives?

Mine was assigned to me 28 years ago by the US Government. I use it on
all forums where i don't use my real name, although it's a whole lot
easier to find me by kc5f than my real name. Three of us in my high
school had the same name. There's only one kc5f in the world, by
international treaty!

[slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?

2008-11-18 Thread Goodsounds

Yeah, I know, it's a stupid idea.

I debated with myself over this, but perhaps not long enough, because
here it is. I kinda feel like a middle school teacher with a gym full
of thirteen year old boys and girls at the first dance of the year.

There are some interesting names, so share the background if you want,
move on if you don't. Howard, Michael, Phil - we got you covered
already. Thanks

Goodsounds = what I get out of my SB3s.
