Love the idea of liner notes! I plan on providing some information with the downloads, just haven't worked that part out yet. I hear you on owning the actual media. I am still old school like that as well to a certain degree, although I am starting to convert. Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. Stay tuned for more updates! matt w3wilkes wrote: This does sound a little like the old Columbia Record Club my brothers joined back in the 70's. I did 3 different Time Life series. This gave me all the great 60's singles, but was missing some of the big names like the Rolling Stones and The Beatles (no big deal since I have all their stuff anyway), but I think it covered about 85% of all the Rock radio hits (the recordings are great) and replaced all my 45's! This reminds me, in some aspects anyway, of Noise Trade (www.noisetrade.com). You sign up for a weekly email and you get access to full albums or in some cases, compilations of artists. I believe when I signed up I told them what genres I was interested in. It is a pay-what-you-want model. I find it good for discovery since the emails do a thorough job of categorizing the music by stating - For fans of: follwed by a list of band names or record label names. It's only mp3 at this point but I've discovered a few bands through them. My initial plan is to have a BoxSett ever 4-5 weeks. I figure people will buy when it looks interesting to them and when they have had the chance to digest what they already received. Thanks again! Re: [slim] Do people still buy digital music? New business idea; would love feedback
Thanks again Mnyb! Love your feedback. I hope that the differentiating factors of BoxSett will be: 1. Any format of music (FLAC being an option for those who want it) 2. Great albums curated by awesome labels 3. New audience (for artists and labels) 4. New artists without feeling overwhelmed by selection (for listeners) 5. Great price 6. Non-profit element Its not for everyone, but I hope that it is for enough people. Eventually, I would like to have a subscription option, but I think people are a bit tired of those for the moment. Thanks again! Matt Mnyb wrote: I was a member of BW music club for a couple of years . A vaguely similar idea ( with some obvius differences maybe a case study for you ) . I would not pay for lossy compressed files ( broken product IMO ). emmbeegee's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34339 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102931 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yep, that is exactly right. I talked to one label already and they seemed to really understand this, so I am encouraged by that. Mnyb wrote: That would be great if you manage to do that . Re: [slim] Do people still buy digital music? New business idea; would love feedback
I think your sub-set of potential customers will be so small it will not be sustainable. One (specialized) music genre, attract those that want to buy (not subscribe), purchases would be infrequent. I also think you have no idea how much time and money it will take to market the service, attract and maintain relationships with numerous record labels, maintain licensing agreements, server issues and maintenance, etc I just use existing services, pick a genre, then select the mix menu item (which then randomly plays artists/bands within that genre). IMO, it's not that your idea is bad, rather that not all good ideas are a business. :) toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102931 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yes I still buy stuff , I've found Bandcamp to be a great resource . and on this forum there is a what are you listening to rigth now tread that is great . In general the music sub forum here is filled with great ideas . And I use spotify and play some distant but very musical friends playlists , also great . I also use the smartmix plugin to LMS kick of something I like and watch it pick similar stuff from spotify . Then I have the what was that tune plugin enabled so I can always go back and see what i listened to from any source . You know the feeling I heard a great song 15 minutes ago what was that . You can always subscribe to newsletters from chosen record labels . Boxsett , is this specialised in indie seems like anything that's not pop or rock is indie or alternative ? I will give it a try, is it up and running is there any set to be had yet ? I can't see any example boxsett yet ? Having preview directly on the site like bandcamp or boomkat would be a nice touch .
