Jim, Looks like you can now list Juke Radio yourself without needing a custom skill: https://developer.amazon.com/en-US/blogs/alexa/alexa-skills-kit/2021/12/a-new-code-free-way-to-onboard-your-radio-station-on-to-alexa philchillbill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=68920 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115087 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Testers wanted
Jim, If you want to take user-requests for Juke Radio, I can easily add an intent to the skill to allow the user to say e.g. User: "Alexa, ask Juke Radio to make a request" Echo: "What would you like to suggest?" User: "Night Moves, by Bob Seger" or "more Pink Floyd" or "less Justin Bieber" etc Echo: "Okay. Night Moves by Bob Seger will be suggested for future playback on Juke Radio. Thanks for your submission!" I'd POST the suggestion to a https API endpoint of your choice for you to do with as you please. Just an idea I came across on Upwork. Simple to implement and adds value to having a skill for the station over listening by other means. Question is if you want the overhead/burden of giving listeners a voice? philchillbill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=68920 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=115087 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

What did you use for the analogue > digitising chain? Its not the needle drop. Its the fact that the playout mechanism currently goes from digital to analogue before being encoded into the digital streams. The analogue out is a Pi while the analogue input is a bog standard Realtek sound card. This is the weak point of the whole delivery mechanism and is more than likely where the flatness is introduced. This will be replaced by a digital only delivery in due course but the previous digital only incarnation on a VM had the noise interference. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
Ive been listening to the FLAC stream through radio now playing on a competent system (touch, decent schitt dac, 60wpc Arcam integrated, older Klipsch bookshelf speakers with a small goldenear sub) and it sounds quite good. A couple of observations: 1) Artwork lead (previously reported). 2) I had previously commented on "low gain" compared to other stations. The "gain" has definitely increased, although it might still be a bit below a few others I listen to- RP FLAC, Planet Radio US, etc. But quite livable. Switching stations should not cause a huge volume increase/decrease. 3) I just turned it up when Supertramp "school" played. A good audition song. Sounded real good loud (louder than I would normally listen). I quickly queued up my ripped copy without touching the volume, and found the volume levels to be similar (no replay gain used) and the sound quality was very similaras well (to my aging ears) For what it's worth.no complaints, nice work Jim! This is the current situation due to a number of reasons and its not going to be the case long term - which is why I know the SQ can be easily improved. About 40% of the stuff played is from needle drops at 16/44.1. On the 50-60 second out of sync cover art up date. At present Pauls Radio Now Playing has no means of timing the tracks because we dont currently provide it. This will be changed in due course so in future changes will be more accurate. FWIW I just used Audacity to record U2 Pride (in the name of love) from Juke Radio and my CD rip. I normalised both to 0dB peak then calculate replaygain values of both. Juke Radio -5.49 dB CD rip -5.51 dB That suggests no compression is being applied to the radio stream. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
You asked about sound quality. I've just spent an hour or so playing the flac stream and comparing the tracks with my local versions. I was using: Naim NDX streamer (LMS via UPnP) Recently serviced Naim olives and Shahinian Arc speakers I realise that this is going to be a bit inconclusive but thought it worth posting. Two reasons for it being inconclusive: 1) My own versions of the tracks consisted of MFSL remasters, PBThal 24-96 needle drops and ripped CDs 2) I don't generally listen to radio on this system (even Tidal) because the sound quality is always less impressive than playing local files. Observations: The stream played flawlessly. There was no album art (Material skin on Android mobile and Squeezebox Touch controller) The sound was a fair bit quieter than any of my local files and a little quieter than the radio stations I (quickly) tested it against In comparison to my local files the sound was flat, set back, bland and lacked presence. The best sound comparison would probably be against the PBThal 24-96 vinyl rips as these are needle drops from excellent equipment (and personally I suspect the 24-96 encoding makes little difference). Adjusting for volume difference I tried three of these against the tracks plated on the radio station and the above still applied, the radio sound was flat, set back, bland and lacked presence. This difference was not subtle. It was marked. But as I say radio always seems like that when compared to local files, even Tidal. Can I ask, do you use any noise limiting (i.e. replay gain etc)? Anyway, I enjoyed the music so thanks. I'd be very interested to hear some more modern electronic music and try a sound quality comparison Take care of your tongue. It is in a wet place and can easily slip. I've been listening to the flac stream for the past hour. I am not the most critical judge, but I have found the sound quality very good, indeed. I have also thoroughly enjoyed the mix. I do notice that the metadata consistently leads the audio by about 50-60 seconds. I'm playing it on a group player, and some members of the group use the Airplay bridge, all of which adds some delay to the audio, but I don't think it's even close to that much. I am using Paul's Radio Now Playing plugin. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players, occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic. The new hardware has been live for getting in for 36 hours and Ive obviously been monitoring whats going on. Im really pleased with the SQ especially as I know that it would be easy to improve it a little further but as far as I am concerned the FLAC stream sounds pretty damn good with zero burps during my monitoring. I have been surprised how good it sounds on my Kitchen Echo Show using Phils Alexa skill. Ive kept an eye on listener levels and I know that a number of people have popped in and out. We could really now do with some feedback on the SQ as listeners hear it if people have any. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
Apologies for the interruptions that have occurred recently but I am now pleased to report that the new hardware I'd been promising is installed, configured and now live. Early signs are that this seems to have eradicated the burping noise interference that we were seeing which was why the hardware change was needed. Implementation was delayed due to access issues to the data centre and paid work getting in the way. At the same time we have also made some background changes to our code to make things more efficient from a server memory perspective. These changes have been done in such a way as to make no difference to the Paul's Radio Now Playing plugin or to Phil's beta Alexa skill (more testers of this needed). Juke is still in test mode - playlist remains in a semi-auto mode - but we will now be able to start serious work on our playlist programming. Please re-visit and let us know if you find issues. We can currently accommodate 100 listeners at a time (theoretically unlimited when we go fully live). The auto playlist remains Rock, Jazz, Soul & Blues based. Just for what it's worth, this is how the Pandora plugin has always worked, in my experience. So I suspect this is the intended behavior. LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Just to confirm that I now have the stream running with the addition of the plugin and getting nice steady information for each track as it plays . One other offspin is that now the metadata seems to be enough for the Material Skin information page to identify the album and the artist and provide where available the full information pages . Before the plug was added only the artist was showing . The current playlist is simply a random output - it will be different when we have completed the playout testing. The significant obvious issue at present is the encoder "burp" but there is a bigger underlying issue which testers won't see - we need to re-design the API that exposes the extended metadata. It is one of the quirks (assuming the problem is the lower part of the screen). It happens with all of my plugins and I suspect it happens with some others as well. It is the playlist and, in theory it should really show Juke Radio since that is what was queued to the playlist. There may well be something that I could/should do in the plugin to either set it back to the originally queued item or force it to update with the Now Playing info but I have never been able to work out how to do it. The holes make the shape of the the pi logo; cute. I took the lid off and the temp dropped 5C, to about 66°C. The ambient air temp in the cabinet is warm due to the router. In the prior location the room temp was about 24°C, and the pi3B+ was upper ~59°C. I am going to move it to another location based upon the information below because 70°C appears to be about an upper limit. A search yielded the following from '*this website*' (https://www.rs-online.com/designspark/how-does-raspberry-pi-deal-with-overheating): To keep costs low, the Raspberry Pi is built with commercial-grade chips which are qualified to different temperature ranges; the USB and Ethernet controller of the Pi 3+ (Microchip LAN7515) is specified by the manufacturers as being qualified from 0°C to 70°C. The SoC (System on Chip – the integrated circuit that does the Pi’s processing, a Broadcom BCM2837B0) is qualified from -40°C to 85°C. This effectively means that the maximum operating temperature of Raspberry Pi’s key components is 70°C and 85°C respectively. Apologies for hijacking this thread. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
About an 45 min ago I set up three separate streams using the three audio file types on three of my SB devices. When I came back from walking the dog, above 10 min ago, the MP3 and FLAC stream were playing music. The AAC stream was not playing music and appeared to be stuck on a Guns and Roses tune. If I recall, the MP3 and FLAC stream was playing a Paul Simon tune. Pressing pause and start on the SB Radio with the AAC stream did not fix the problem. However, if I changed streams and went back to ACC then it starting working again. I will leave the three streams running during the day. This will also stress test my Pi3B+ running pCP. I moved the pi into a location shared with a router so it now is warmer so I am concerned about additional heat. The Pi temp at standby was 62C, and now it is 71C. The pi is just using heat sinks, no fan. I am logging the temps. Not to detract from this thread, at what temp should I be concerned? Hi Jim; Listening and enjoying extensively since you recruited us. I am wondering how you got a hold of my collection though :) I am wondering if you are interested on observations regarding content and your song selection algorithms If no, please ignore...I noticed a couple of things: 1) Same artists occur multiple times within a few hours. Yesterday it was McCartney and Dylan, and . McCartney was 3 times in, say 3 hours. Maybe it was because of solo vs Wings. 2) I like the genre segments, but seems to dwell in one for a quite a while. There was a jazz/fusion segment a couple days ago (Miles Davis, Weather Report, etc) that lasted a long time. The day after it was Disco/Funk/Soul. I wonder if someone might tune in, listen for a while, and not realize how diverse your station is and think "oh, this is a Jazz station" Don't get me wrong I LOVE hearting all of it. I was part of the "Disco Sucks" group when I was younger, but have grown to appreciate it I think my previous comment about you liking clapton :) was a combo of the above. It was in a blue segment, and selected Clapton solo, Derek and the Dominos (a fav), Clapton and BB King, Blind Faith. Finally, I heard Arzachel...wow! I don't think I have ever heard that on internet radio. Hawkwind maybe :D I really enjoyed hearing that again. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
A good mix. Probably perfect for an English summer afternoon, if a bit rockier than I'm accustomed to on a slow-starting North American morning. I've got two flac streams playing at the moment. I'll probably move on and listen to something else soon, but will keep one stream playing silently. On my Linux (Mint 20.2) desktop, it plays well in VLC and the Rhythmbox player. I often use Audacious, a Winamp clone, and it plays the mp3 and aac streams well. For the flac stream, it reports "Error playing https://jukeradio.double6.net/flc: Error reading metadata". I actually have Winamp installed in Wine. Why? It's sometimes useful for playing a track from within mp3tag; otherwise, it's just a foolish stunt. Unsurprisingly, it can't play any of the streams, probably because of https. This is just for information. I do NOT expect support for odd and outdated players! LMS 8 nightly running on Raspberry Pi OS. Mostly virtual players, occasionally with SB Radio, Boom or Classic. Re: [slim] Testers wanted
If anyone wants to try the plugin just let me or d6jg (Jim) know and one of us will send you a link to a repo. The Juke Radio part is done - although there is some finessing that could be done in one area. The plugin is called "Radio Now Playing" rather than "Juke Radio" because I have long wanted to combine a few (ideally all) of my radio stations plugins into one. I am not there yet - but this plugin currently has a couple of other station groups in there that I did for other people in the past but never got around to releasing because I really wanted to avoid making more one-off plugins. There is still a way to go to make this new plugin able to replace all my others so I have held off putting it into the wild ... but this is the moment for a bit more exposure.
