Re: [slim] Transporter or Touch?
really, you are much better off spending your money on a good external DAC, and feeding it from any SB - Touch or SB3. i used to want to buy a Transporter but all the spots where taken, and as i recently built my new system (see Pics of your system) i got a Benchmark DAC2HGC (which is superb), and used to feed it with the Touch but as of a few days ago connected an old SB3 with the original slim devices logo i had in a box. yes, i know the Touch supports 24/192 and the SB3 only does 48/24, but honestly i can't hear a difference. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical-- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR-- Creek Destiny Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval-- KEF LS50 Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic- AudioEngine5 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100636 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I'd almost certainly go with a good async USB DAC as jitter is essentially removed from the equation. So a Touch with the EDO extension installed would be my preferred choice. Re: [slim] Transporter or Touch?
Another use for EDO is USB only DAC's . They are quite common , the idea behind them is to have good computer audio and USB is commonly found on computers . Now you can utilise such a product on a Touch . IMO it is quite silly to not have multiple inputs on a DAC , I like my products practical ie being able to conect all kinds of stuff and have spare inputs etc. But some USB DAC's are a bargain too . But I agree with Gary , it's not much content worthwhile availed exclusively 24/96 . ( if you can buy the 24/192 they often also sells 24/96 ). Another use is DoP files to a DSD capable DAC over USB , but that's even more niche . You basically have to chose file format over content to get a large enough collection of any of these formats . IMO audiophile labels is like putting the cart before the horse :) Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. I have a Transporter as my main unit, with a Radio and a Duet servicing auxiliary spaces. I also have two Touches, as yet unused, in their boxes, awaiting deployment. Aside from sound quality issues (I am obviously not qualified from personal experience), I would say go for the Transporter for the build quality and the cool factor -- but if cost is a factor, it 's hard to see the Touch as a bad choice. Yeah the transporter is high quality , the only thing that would worry me a bit in an old used unit is the VFD displays ( 2 of them ) . But if the price is rigth... A Toy quality thing like Touch can last a while too just wondering a bit about it's display quality . Thanks everybody for the replies. I like both, but I'm really sold on the cool factor of the Transporter. That's where I'm leaning. The Touch is cheaper (a plus), but not by much compared to it's price before Logitech stopped producing them. Can someone explain a little more about the EDO plugin on the Touch? What does that do? I'm not exactly PC savvy, so overlook my ignorance please. The biggest thing I worry about with another SB and the ones I have is if/when one of them dies. If I knew of someone or someplace that could repair them, like with the VDF display as mentioned, then I would feel a lot better about buying another one. I really like the looks of that Transporter. Re the EDO plugin. It allows a TOUCH to (1) play 24/192 hires files (otherwise limited to 24/96 hires files) and (2) connect to certain DACs using USB out of the TOUCH. I have several touch players too but don't bother with EDO. Out of ~80,000 files I have less than 20 24/96 files and zero 24/192 files. (Note regular CDs are 16/44.1 files). I find the optical and S/PDIF digital outs of the TOUCH to be more than enough. In my opinion, the EDO is *not* a reason to go for the Touch over the Transporter unless you are really interested in the ability to feed a USB DAC or play 24/192 files. If you really like the Transporter, go for it. It's only money! I love mine. It looks great, it is well built with quality components, I really like the sound of the DAC, and it works nicely. Install the BLANKSAVER plugin so that the displays are OFF when not being used, and the thing should last forever. *Location 1:* VortexBox 4TB (2.2) LMS 7.8 Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) *Location 2:* VBA 3TB (2.2) LMS 7.7.2 Touch Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) *Office:* Win7(64) LMS 7.8 SqueezePlay *Spares:* VBA 4TB, SB3, Touch (3), Radio (3), CONTROLLER *Controllers:* iPhone4S (iPeng), iPad2 (iPengHD SqueezePad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win7(64) laptop Ripping (FLAC) - dbpoweramp, Tagging - mp3tag, Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100636 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Transporter or Touch?
I recently purchased a brand new SB Touch at a tidy profit for the seller. It will arrive shortly. I did consider a used Transporter. I think the Transporter has the higher cool factor, but the Touch will do nicely and should sound excellent in my system. I already have a SB or six, so the Touch lets me acquire a bit more extinct SB hardware and improve the sound in my main system, which currently sports a SB3. If used as a transport only , the touch is as good or exceeds the TP. It's DAC is mediocre , however the Transporters dac is also not the best thing since sliced bead to some. The biggest problem using the touch is that its screen is not visible from far away , so you got to use a droid or Isomething as a remote control if you actually want to see whats playing etc , or you can also go low tech and use a pair of binoculars I have both , touch and old style transporter , if I think of what I paid for the transporter vs the touch's current price , I did not get great value. -- Rodney_Gold TP/Z-sys RDP1 digital Pre/Meridian DSP5500's Or TP/DSP5500's Touch/Emotiva X-DA1 dac/bryston 4bst/Canton Ergo 120 dc SB3/Meridian DSP5000's TP/ Emotiva X-da1/Woo Audio Wa2 Headphone amp/Sehneisser Hd800's Touch/KrK Ergo/KrK VXT8 actives + 10S sub The nicest thing about smacking your head against the wall is...the feeling you get when you stop Rodney_Gold's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14618 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=90294 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

This has been discussed extensively before, although not very recently. Obviously the TP's quality hasn't been eroded, but the Touch has certainly closed the gap between the cheaper SBs and the TP. A lot of people say that a Touch into a good outboard DAC can produce sound quality in the range of the TP, perhaps surpassing the TP with a good enough DAC.
