I've developed a plugin that let you utilise a upnp/dlna player as if it is a normal LMS device. You can find it on github, LMS to uPNP. Re: [slim] What is the best way to add a room to your server these days?
ICYMI I'm using my IPad2 and Squeezepad. I use a shelf in my bookcase as "docking station", so that the IPad charges as I use it as a Squeezeplayer. I can easily unplug it and occasionally use it for websurfing. My pc-speakers sound has significantly improved, so maybe the soundcard in the IPad is better? I have no bitrate limit to my FLAC-stream :-) Thanks again for your advice. I use a Radio in my office, and think that a UE Radio back-converted would be a good solution. I don't pine for stereo, and the sound is much better than on my old stereo speakers. Re: [slim] What is the best way to add a room to your server these days?
I was recently looking at options as a friend was thinking about Sonos and I was trying to see if there was a nice squeezebox alternative that might save him some money. In the end the Sonos worked out to be the best option for him, but the best I could come up with was: Aktimate Micro powered speakers (http://www.aktimate.com.au/micro.html) and a Raspberry Pi with PiCorePlayer and a usb wifi dongle. The Aktimates have a built in DAC (PCM2704 I believe so nothing special but better than Raspberry Pi analog out), so usb cable from the speaker to the Pi and should be able to power the Pi from the built in iPod dock (30 pin) with an adapter. So a one power point solution, even if it would be a bit of a pain to move around compared to Sonos. As PiCorePlayer runs in memory you don't have to worry about clean shutdowns. There is also the Akitmate Mini+ which are bigger and more expensive and have no cheap built in DAC, so if using with a Raspberry Pi you would need a DAC. They apparently sound much better but they would be much heavier to move. Of course an old iDevice or Android could be used in place of the Raspberry Pi if you already had one. Re: [slim] What is the best way to add a room to your server these days?
If you are going laptop then try to find one where you can remove the battery but still run it off mains. Some have mains input into the battery direct some into the laptop outside of the battery. WOL is unlikely to work even on an Ethernet connection as above as Laptops hardware spec doesn't forsee a need for it. If you have XP installed first try Squeezeplay into either a USB DAC or active speakers with a USB interface. Forget the onboard sound card - it will be rubbish. Re: [slim] What is the best way to add a room to your server these days?
With an old laptop you have several possibilities to consider. Keep XP or install some linux OS on it . The players to use are SqueezePlay or Squeezelite . Is the internal soundcard good enough or should some USB DAC be used , but this migth not be an issue unless you get really good speakers and the internal sound is really bad . You may have to investigate how to set up the PC for best sound , is there a SqueezePlay version with asio or wasapi support ? But don't get to bogged down in esoteric discussions regarding this . WOL over wifi is a very rare functionality that must have hardware support , it's safe to assume that most laptops does not have that . And the WOL function in LMS works the other way around the players can wake the server . You have to set it up to avoid the deepest sleep modes that disables the wifi interface , but on the other hand kick in a blank screen as fast possible and hard drive spin down migth save you enough power . Thanks for all your advice, it's appreciated. Pippins idea with 'spare thingies' made me think of, that my kids both have dumped their first laptops, so maybe I could use one of those instead of buying a Pi. And also use the small vedges for desktop placement adam sells to thier speakers (to tilt it upwars a bit . In such close quartars i also adjusted the treble down a bit .
