Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-08-04 Thread Jeff Flowerday

IMO, your current feature set doesn't warrant the new $9.99 price. I'd
rather continue running iPeng on the iPad as a controller or just use
my iPhone.

At, $5.99 I was willing to give it a go once authentication support was
implemented.

Now I'm just one customer but I thought I'd let you know my thoughts on
the pricing in a friendly manner.

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-08-04 Thread Jeff Flowerday

Bringing up a page of album art like that would be way too slow. The
speed squeezebox server can serve the art seems to be an issue. Just
look at the art being populated when you bring up the 5 album under an
artist using the current iPeng.

You would have to wait 5 seconds for a page of art just load at the
least.

Performance should be the #1 goal, IMO.

So does caching happen on a need by need basis now? When I first visit
an artist all the art for that artist will then get cached and
resused?

Before did it cache all art prior, as it used to bring up a pop up

Re: [slim] [Announce] iPeng 1.2.5 now on the App Store

Would it be too much to add an option in the configuration to clear and
repopulate the entire cache? I have a 7000 plus album library and
would like the art completely cached for when I'm in 3G land.

I use iPeng for reference when shopping and the uncached art is a
little too slow loading via 3G. The library is too large to scroll
through slowly on wifi to get the art to cache.

Thanks!

It's liveable over 3G but it would be nice if it was already cached. I
have a need for speed. My server definately isn't an issue, I'm runnin
a Core 2 Quad @ 3.25 GHZ/4GB Ram/4 1 TB Blacks in a Raid 10, 64 bit
Windows Server 2008 R2. Actual FLAC files are on an external Raid 0
enclosure. All the server does is host a couple very low traffic
websites and squeeze center.

I'd get the iPhone version, until you wait for iPeng HD. It's feature

First bug for you.

If you go into current playlist, click edit, select all tracks and
delete them. You then close the current playlist popout and add a new
track to the current playlist. When you go back into the playlist it
doesn't show that track you just added.

If you click the save button but then cancel out it seems to cause a
refresh on the playlist and the tracks then properly show up.

Is there another thread or a bug report for this? I wouldn't mind
bumping it or voting for it, seems like lately the squeeze developers
are off in a black hole someplace cutting code for something and none
of the existing reported 7.6 bugs are getting addressed.

Might very well be top-level menus, I just checked New Music and it's
messed up as well.

Thanks for looking into it!

I could see how stamp size would look silly not scaled but all mine are
500x500 so I think they would look better not scaled. No?

itunes doesn't support flac.

flac via 3g cellular isn't going to work stable unless you have the best
3g in the world. Install lame and have your server transcode to mp3.

It's questionable whether SqueezeCommander is still supported by the

Squeezecommander isn't designed for tablets. Not many options for
smaller non phone android devices.

I have 110,000+ tracks and I was forced to used a ramdisk for the cache

2011-01-13 Thread Jeff Flowerday

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83106

Question: What's your highest priority

- More images of your music collection
- More Screensafers
- Better player syncing
- Mysqueezebox.com - Player Switching
- Better Search
- Drag'n'Drop for the playlist
- TrackStat Ratings
- IRBlaster integration
- Big Screen with Album Covers for selection
- Something else

Something Else:

I vote for better caching. I have thousands of artists, and I find it
annoying to have to wait 10+ seconds while the artist list is generated
on first use. My server is an overclocked quad core beast with lots of
ram and a Raid 10 disc subsystem. Wirless N network. Choosing all
albums is even worst.

A portrait view of some sort would be nice as well.

Man I hated the instant play when clicking on album art. Dozens of
times a night the playlist got blown away by friends clicking on the
album art. Even with the awesome "Party Mode" preventing this from
happening now, I still think it should be a long click on regular mode,
it's just not intuitive having instant play on the art and drill into on
the album name.

It's the same way in the iPhone app, no browsable list of artists or

Didn't know that and no sorry I hadn't tried because until recently I

For me WMA lossless works on all my devices, flac doesn't. There are
many advantages to flac with the squeezebox including FFD/RWD but it
becomes too much of a pain with my other devices. Heck even my car
supports WMA lossless on USB stick but no flac.

I can't tell the difference on my Zune but I can in my car as crazy as
that sounds. Not much road noise in my car.

My collection is approaching 2TB of lossless. So a second lame -c0
collection does actually make the disc situation more complicated than
it needs to be. My lossless collection grows by 10GB a week at least.

Re: [slim] SqueezePlay - Plays only 30 secs or Repeats Song

2009-04-01 Thread Jeff Flowerday

I have issues with it as well, sound cuts out with around 10 seconds
left.

That said. Squeezeplay is Beta and development has basically been put
on hold, so there is nothing that can be done.

I suggest not using it until they have the resources to work on it
again.

7.3.3 beta has been working quite well for me with the last controller
update.

Kudos to the team for stepping back and addressing the controller
complaints we have seen growing like an epidemic here lately.

If anyone is running 7.3.2 or early, I really suggest giving the latest
7.3.3 nightly a try, it really really improves the smoothness of the
controller.

that shouldn't matter if playing back through on of your squeezebox

[slim] Contacting Support

2009-10-28 Thread Jeff Flowerday

So here's my dilemma.

I have an open incident. Waiting for a replacement battery, was told
2-4 business days. it's now going on 4 weeks.

1) I continually try to contact support, each time I'm on hold for near
an hour, I have a cell phone only and don't want to waste my air time,
so I'm forced to hang up.

2) I finally email support with my incident number and it auto replies
telling me my email address doesn't match the incident.

3) I try to update my online profile with my email address as they
requested in the reply email, but I don't know my password.

4) I try to get it to send me my password for my email address, and it
then procedes to tell my account is invalid.

At what point do you just fire you dead Duet against the wall and just
give up? Man this is frustrating!!!

Re: [slim] What's the best file format to use

2010-02-25 Thread Jeff Flowerday

What format do most of your devices/software support?

Choose the lossless format that is best supported. Be that FLAC, WMA
Lossless or Apple Lossless.

If you don't have any devices and are only concerned with getting it
right with squeezebox, then FLAC is the way to go.

7.0.0 was absolutely unusable for me and most anyone running slimserver
on windows. We had no choice but go to the beta 7.0.1 I would hate to
be the average user still stuck on 7.0.0.

Mine was working fine until the update loop, I'd be more than happy not
receive another update until 7.0.1 goes gold. We need the ability to
turn off automatic updates once we get a stable build for our
particular uses.

dbpoweramp has a batch converter to convert your existing library. You
can then use it to rip your new stuff in both WMA Lossless and MP3.
There is a plug in that automatically rips both formats at once.

Re: [slim] Flac On Ipod in Cars

2008-09-29 Thread Jeff Flowerday

I have to disagree that you can't tell the difference between 320vbr and
lossless in Cars. It really depends on the car and the amount of road
noise transferred to the cabin.

My current cars factory head unit play wma lossles native off a USB
key. I did a back to back comparison between lossless and 320kbps vbr
and was actually surprised that I could hear a difference. My last car
had DVD-A support and it was night day different than regular CDs.

That said I couldn't tell the difference on my Zune or computer
speakers. So as mentioned above the sub par DAC and headphone amp in
iPods and such are more the limiting factor.
