[discuss] OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 Release Candidate Is Here

2005-07-14 Thread Jacqueline McNally

All,

OpenOffice.org 1.1.5rc is ready for you to download now. It's a
release candidate, meaning that it has bugs, and we would like for
you to work with us in finding them and reporting them. It's easy
and even fun. :-)

What's important about 1.1.5rc? It includes numerous bug fixes but
just as important includes a filter for OpenDocument files, which is
the type that OpenOffice.org 2.0 and the 1.9.x releases create. To
download and file bug reports, follow the links below:

* OpenOffice.org 1.1.5rc:
http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.5rc/index.html
* QA Project: http://qa.openoffice.org/

This release candidate arrives simultaneously in 11 languages. More
languages will be available as the community creates them. Check
with your Native Language Project for more information. It is also
available for Linux, Solaris, and Windows.

a) It is a bug fix of 1.1.4.
b) It looks like the 2.0 beta has been knocked back another month or two;
c) 1.1.5 was originally scheduled for release in April, or May. [It
was also going to be simultaneous with, or after the 2.0 release.]

[discuss] Newbie question - Installing 1.1.5rc version

2005-07-14 Thread Steve Higham
I'm currently running 1.1.4 on Windows and Suse Linux. I would like to try
the RC version. Any advice on how to install. E.g.
  - Deinstall 1.1.4 first then install 1.1.5rc.
  - Simply install 1.1.5rc

If I don't deinstall 1.1.4 first, will 1.1.5rc coexist with 1.1.4?

Many Thanks - Steve

Hi Steve,

Yeah, it'll be fine. You can run different versions of OpenOffice.org
simultaneously. I have 3 installed in this computer :-) (I have 1.1.4
in English and in Spanish and 1.9.113).

Just make sure that it gets installed in a different directory which
*should* happen by default. The default directory is probably
/opt/openoffice.org1.1.5 or something like that. It doesn't hurt to check.

Cheers,
Daniel.

[discuss] What Do New Users Need to Know About OO.o?

Greetings,

new article by B. Byfield:

The question is worth asking... OOo is not difficult to learn, but if
you approach it expecting it to behave exactly like another office
suite, especially MS Office, you are setting yourself up for
frustration.

I found this a bit rich, coming from a Linux magazine. Has the bloke who
wrote the article had a good look at other the software running on
Linux. Consistent interfaces and useful instructions are not all that
easy to find, IME.

And as if Linux folks now anything about readable instructions!

quote
The Limits of On-Line Help

Faced with such interface consistencies, users may turn, naturally
enough, to the OOo on-line help. However, while improving all the time,
it has troubles of its own. Common complaints about the help include:

*
It doesn't always explain when features are unique to a
particular operating system. For instance, because Windows supports the
OLE standard while other operating systems do not, the Help contains
references to using DDE Links that are unavailable under GNU/Linux.

*
It mentions features that are unavailable.
   *
It does not mention features that are available.
*
Its explanations are incomplete, misleading or plain wrong.

etc /quote

I can point the writer to a thousand Linux instruction documents that
are nothing if not absolute obfuscation that do little more than
bewilder the reader.

Much as I like Linux, its generally appalling documentation gets up my
goat.

Sorry, I'll stop now before I start ranting.

There are two branches:

The old, stable branch: OOo11x has had some bug fixes and
incorporation of code to allow it to read (not store) the new
OpenDocument format as well as all the others. Many people
prefer to stay with the proven, stable branch until the new
version proves itself in actual use.
Many prefer to just have a version work as expected --especially
if you roll out several thousand seats at a time.

The new branch: OOo2is where the new version is being
developed; in a separate branch from the old, stable branch.
Happens all the time in the best of software environments.

[discuss] OASIS open doc format - a question

2005-07-14 Thread William W. Austin
Recently I noticed on another list that the 1.4 release of the koffice
suite now supports the OASIS open document format (.odt), and out of
curiosity I downloaded the source rpm, and built and installed it.

Interestingly it reads the OOo .odt files - for the most part,
anyway. Embedded graphics tend to disappear and some other things
rearrange themselves, In particular page headers and footers can show
up in really random places, and in many cases with truly odd point
sizes. For instance I had written a technical report with headers and
footers in 9 point Arial Bold - various entries in each ... title, page
number, dates, release identifier, proprietary marking, etc. They
showd up in a frame centered vertically on the page - in sizes ranging
from 18 to 96 points. (?!?!?!)

I feel like an idiot making a comment here, because I haven't actually
read the entire OASIS standard (yet); however, from what I have read
I'm wondering whether there is enough implementation freedom (read
wiggle room) in the standard for someone to make it a little
difficult to switch from one office suite to another. Any views on
this one? (I'm NOT trying to start a war, I'm just curious having been
involved with other standards bodies in the past.)

Anyway, of course it is also possible that the koffice implementation
is brand new and still has bugs in it...

FWIW I also notice - after taking the time to clean up the doc which
I opened (in kword) and saving it under a different file name - that
some things also disappear coming back from kword to OOo-writer
(although far fewer than in the opposite direction.

If this gets straightened out properly (and I'm sure it will), then no
wonder M$ is scared silly about the prospect of having an open standard
out there... :-)
