RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Shopping carts

2006-11-22 Thread Rick Lansford
Lowest price - build it yourself.

It's not that difficult and if you just want a basic system, you can create
one that meets your specific needs then add on some bells and whistles
later. I found much of the complexity of the "off the shelf" products were
from an attempt to make a one size fits all, and trying to allow some degree
of customization. If you are just building it for yourself, then you don't
need all those added functions.

Just my humble comments.

Anyone here on Saturday?

I'm looking for suggestions/recommendations/feedback on CF shopping carts.
I'm currently looking at CFWebStore and AbleCommerce. This is for me, not a
client - need to get my retail business online!

Of course, I want everything at the lowest cost possible.

Of importance:
- Stability
- Ability to customize pages quickly and easily (particulartly product
display)
- Very flexible product attributes
- Ability to manage all site pages thru a single interface
- Ability to capture CC info without actually processing it

Any feedback is appreciated...

Thanks,
Dave Bellevue

Yeah except the price ratio goes way up for building it yourself. If
you can save cycles on development by buying something then it may pay
off.

Course you may have to fix their code so... might not be that
productive. Definately buy something that does 80% of what you need it
to do out of the box.

RE: RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Shopping carts

2006-11-22 Thread Rick Lansford
I agree with buying something, but only if it works. The last site I did had
some complexities that I just couldn't handle without doing it myself. They
had some items that shipped from stock, some that had a drop ship
arrangement and some bulk items that shipped by freight. That made the
real-time shipping calculations a bit cumbersome. Plus, they wanted
customers to be able to purchase by credit card or with an established
corporate account and to add sales tax to in-state purchases. I just
couldn't find anything off the shelf that would work.

[ACFUG Discuss] cfhttp retrieving a file

2006-11-22 Thread Steven Ross

Hey all

I've got a page that is outputting a file (mp3 to be exact) I want to
hit that with cfhttp and output the data back to the browser as a
valid mp3 file. The reason why cfhttp is calling a cfm that serves a
mp3 is that I have to simulate what the external service is going to
do when it is developed so no questions about why im doing that! ; )

I tried this:

http://localhost/servemp3.cfm"; />

   writeOutput(toString(theFile));

and i tried this:
http://localhost/servemp3.cfm"; />

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] cfhttp retrieving a file

2006-11-22 Thread Charlie Arehart
The second approach won't work at all. The file attribute expects to point
to a file, not a variable. Try VARIABLE instead. That may be all you need.
You may want to thrown in a RESET="yes" as well, so that it will remove any
output generated in the page prior to the CFCONTENT. You ought also to turn
off debugging in that page (CFSETTING ShowDebugOutput="no".)

Also, open a new browser window before requesting the URL that does the
CFHTTP/CFCONTENT. Sometimes the browser will cache previously generated
output--even if it shows that it's new data, it may cache other headers.
Just take my word: open a new file to test when making such changes. :-)

Finally, if that still doesn't work, you need to compare what's being sent
to the browser in your approach compared to the real MP3. Use a tool like
Fiddler or Firebug to see.

Yeah I've tried what you suggested... it doesn't work. I just get a

I guess I should go get firebug and look to see what it is sending.
Everything I've found on the web has said I have to write it to the

on this box and avoiding the overhead of IO.

I was just trying to take advantage of the vast ammount memory
on this box and avoiding the overhead of IO.

<$0.02> I would argue that if a user is going to wait 30 seconds or more to
download an mp3, it's not going to matter whether you spend two seconds to
store the file on disk first. However, with a user having the ability to open
up multiple windows and multiple users being able to hit your server, I would
be concerned about every page request taking up 5MB (or whatever the mp3 file
size is) of RAM. Not even considering the fact that it will be child's play to
cache the request if it's a file, and much harder/expensive to do when you keep
it in memory.

Actually that isn't the scenario at all on this... we are streaming
these files in flash so the faster we can get them to the user the
faster it will start playing. Each box in this cluster has 32 GB of
ram and these are small files. Also caching isn't an option because we
aren't using sticky sessions on the cluster

I'll try the firebug thing.

users being able to hit your server, I would be concerned about every page request taking up
5MB (or whatever the mp3 file size is) of RAM. Not even considering the fact that it will be
child's play to cache the request if it's a file, and much harder/expensive to do when you
keep it in memory.

[ACFUG Discuss] Blue Dragon

2006-11-22 Thread Dusty Hale
I have a new client I need to design a very simple app for and I would
prefer to do it in cold fusion because I could do it fast and not have to
charge much. The problem is that the dedicated server he has is a Linux
server and does not have CF on it.

Of course I know CF will run fine on a linux server but since there is no
budget to purchase a license for it, I assumed I would need to rethink it
and do this with PHP. However, then I though Blue Dragon maybe? Could anyone
tell me if my thoughts are worth researching more? Will Blue Dragon allow me
to develop my app with my local cf server then move to his server where I
install Blue Dragon on it? Do you think I will run into headaches and issues
with this approach.

Thanks ahead of time for any advice I get.

Dusty

What about hosting the site on an application service provider? You don't
have to budget for the CF license then. Is the client firm on the fact that
the Linux server must house the site?

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Blue Dragon

2006-11-22 Thread Dusty Hale
Well the problem with that is the site is allready running on this Linux
dedicated server and has too many components, databases, and other things
going on to move the site. Or I should say the client doesn't have the
budget to have me move it for him. On the other hand doing a Blue Dragon
install may be just as time-consuming but I am not sure because I have never
tried it.

Thanks for the thought.

RE: RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Shopping carts

2006-11-22 Thread Robert Reil
Sounds like my situation.

To thicken the mix, I have many vendors, same part, different part numbers
Also that same part has many uses but those uses are proprietary info.
So I have a Many SKU=One PN=Many vendors=One Mfr Part no=Many vendor part
numbers. What a mess..

Yeah except the price ratio goes way up for building it yourself. If
you can save cycles on development by buying something then it may pay
off.

Course you may have to fix their code so... might not be that
productive. Definately buy something that does 80% of what you need it
to do out of the box.

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Blue Dragon

2006-11-22 Thread Dusty Hale
Teddy one thought though is maybe I run just this application on a shared
server. Do you know if there is a way to access a remote "MySQL" database
(one running on the linux server) with CF? Could an DSN be made on the
shared server that could update the MySQL database which resides on a remote
server on a different network?

I have not worked with MySQL before but something tells me that I think I
remember researching this once and determining it couldn't be done.

Thanks for your previous reply and any suggestions you may have.

You can certainly do that. You just need a user on the mysql box that
will let you connect and the firewall has to be setup to let traffic
in on 3306 (or whatever port your running mysql on).

As Steve said, you can remotely connect to MySQL as you would remotely
connect to SQL Server. It is a different port and you need to make sure to
use the appropriate JConnector driver from mysql.org.

RE: RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Blue Dragon

2006-11-22 Thread Dusty Hale
I see also now that there is a driver for MySQL v3 in CF administrator. I
assume this one will work?

Many thanks for the advice to both of you.

As Steve said, you can remotely connect to MySQL as you would remotely
connect to SQL Server. It is a different port and you need to make sure to
use the appropriate JConnector driver from mysql.org .

Ahhh in this case the MySQL box is several states away :) probably
be slow like this but it will only be used to do 1 insert query a day for
just one record so I don't think the sluggishness will be too much of a
problem. Thanks again for all the replies.

As for the version you need to check what is running if it is v5 you
have to download the driver and call it through jdbc.

Re: RE: RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Blue Dragon

2006-11-22 Thread Teddy Payne

I would probably recommend using the drivers from mysql.org even for earlier
versions. The JDBC drivers provided with CF work fine, but I noticed that
in my previous adventures in querying MySQL databases, that the JConnector
did offer better error messages and more compatibility. The down side is
that you have to configure the application a little bit more with a
connection string. The process is pretty well documented though.

RE: RE: RE: [ACFUG Discuss] Blue Dragon

2006-11-22 Thread Dusty Hale
Being that this application is extreamly basic, I think I will just try the
one in CF admin and if I can't get it to work for some reason try the other.
Basically all this thing needs to do is insert one record into a single
table and then upload an image that associated with the data. I'm assuming I
need to handle the image upload with rather than .

Thanks again for the replies.
