Will anyone attending "LA" be posting updates to the list, as the convention
is in progress? That would be cool for those of us who've already used up
their vacation, or can't otherwise make it I hope someone will!!

Have a great time everyone!!

This is really super news! I just checked the Radio & Records adult
contemporary chart and Ordinary Man is at number 27. THIS IS THE CHART
RADIO STATIONS USE! This could lead to a lot more stations playing the
single. Golly, with Behind the Music on VH-1, the summer tour and the
upcoming Today Show appearance, things are cooking. This is the best
time ever to request it on your local adult contemporary radio station.
I'll take care of Atlantic City,, you guys take care of everywhere else.

Ok
Laurin,You've gor my attention, what the hell song is
that!

Title: Thank God for the Doobie Brothers...

A friend of mine sent me a 7 disc CD set called "Have a Nice Decade, the '70s Pop Culture Box".  160 songs from the 1970s...while there are some GREAT songs  in this box ("Long Train Runnin'"," Free Bird", "Ridin' the Storm Out", & "Lady"), they seem tremendously out of place.  The box by-and-large consists of the schlock of the 1970s..."Billy Don't Be a Hero", "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo", "The Night Chicago Died", "Kung Fu Fighting", Rhinestone Cowboy", etc...you get the idea...

Listening to the sugary music on these CDs is enough to send you into a diabetic coma...I mean, check out the quality lyrics of this song (which incidently WON 2 GRAMMY AWARDS):

"Started out this morning feelin' so polite I

always thought a fish could not be caught that would not bite,

but you've got some bait awaitin' and I think I might

like nibblin' a little..."

What the?!?!?!

(Note:  If you can readily identify this song, are you sure you're on the correct list serve?)

1) Thank goodness the 70s are over, but most importantly,

2) THANK GOD WE HAD THE DOOBIES AS AN ANTEDOTE TO THIS KIND OF POP SCHLOCK DURING THE 70s!!!  What did the Doobies give us?  Great guitar solos (as recently described on the list) and fantastic writing that was produced to perfection!

I'm gonna listen to the "Long Train Runnin'" box and Bob Dylan's "Bootleg Series, Volume 1-3" all day today ta get grounded back into reality!

Whew!

Sorry my friends, but I don't have a Doobie story. But, I'm curious...

What are some of your favorite guitar solos on a Doobie Brothers album?

For example, I love the solo Pat does on Neal's Fandango on the Stampede

Dicky in the Allman Bros. Anyone else?

RE: Virus Hoax!! DON'T DELETE WHAT I SENT!!!

2001-06-01 Thread Stafford, Brendan

Hi
Folks,

Just a little note regarding viruses and files in general.I work as a senior
network technician at Delta Dental in Boston, and as a rule of thumb, when you get
any attachment or any mail that has a .exe or .com as an extension on it,unless
you're 100% sure where it came from, don't open it.If you right mouse any file in
general, and look at the properties, you can get a pretty good idea of what and
where it came from, looking forward to the Doobs show at the FleetBoston
Pavilion,hope this helps.

Brendan(MA)

This is what my friend sent me.  She did some research on this.

Lori,
Our IS Department has informed me that this email is INDEED a hoax.  It is
basically getting people to delete their own files that they do need.  File
SULFNBK.EXE is a file you need and has a couple of functions.  It is part of
the windows installation and it also supports long file names.  I have
copied & pasted an example from the Microsoft website Q&A problem resolution
(for those of you who still don't believe), see step #10.  You may also
check for yourself on the Microsoft website.

No Long File Names on the Start Menu After Windows 98 Uninstall

The information in this article applies to:
*    Microsoft Windows 98
*    Microsoft Windows 95

SYMPTOMS
After you uninstall Windows 98, the long file names on the Start menu may be
replaced with MS-DOS-compatible (short) file names in 8.3 format. For
example, the Accessories folder on the Start menu may be displayed as
Access~1.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Windows 98 uninstall procedure did not finish
successfully.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the Sulfnbk.exe utility to restore your long file
names. To do so, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.

2.In the Named box, type winlfn.ini, and then click Find Now.

3.Note the location of the Winlfn.ini file. By default, the
Winlfn.ini file is located in the root folder of drive C.

4.Click Start, and then click Run.

5.In the Open box, type win.ini, and then press ENTER.

6.Click once in the space to the right of the [windows] section
header, and then press ENTER.

7.Type the following line, and then press ENTER:

    run_restore_lfn=

8.Type the following line, and then press ENTER

    uninstallpath=

where is the path to the folder in which the Winlfn.ini file
is located.

9.On the File menu, click Save. On the File menu, click Exit.

10.Click Start, click Run, type sulfnbk in the Open box, and then
press ENTER.

Note that if the Winlfn.ini file does not exist on your computer, you can
rebuild the Start Menu manually. For information about how to modify the
Start Menu, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge

Title: DOOBIE BROTHERS DO MEADOWBROOK

MeadowMail-May 22, 2001

---
** THE DOOBIE BROTHERS DO MEADOWBROOK **
---
Sun., August 19th @ 8PM
Formed in San Jose, California in 1969, the post-hippie rock band the
Doobie Brothers had a string of hits during the '70s, returning in the
late '80s to become a permanent fixture on the oldies circuit. The
group took their name from a time when members shared a joint,
proclaiming themselves "Doobie Brothers."

Thanks to the hit singles "Jesus Is Just Alright" and "Listen to the
Music," their 1972 release Toulouse Street, was a commercial
breakthrough, setting the stage for their extremely popular 1973 effort
"The Captain And Me", which included the Top 10 hit "China Grove."
1976's "Takin' It To The Streets" showcased the Doobie's new sound,
formulated by the ex-Steely Dan members.  Poppy, with a hint of jazz
and funk, the new lighter sound propelled sales of the album to
platinum levels, revitalizing the band.  After releasing a "greatest
hits" compilation, the group returned in 1977 with Livin' on the Fault
Line and in 1979 the Doobies released their biggest album to date,
1979's Minute By Minute, which spawned the No. 1 single "What a Fool
Believes."  1980 brought "One Step Closer" which went platinum on the
success of the Top 10 hit "Real Love."

RE: Set Lists

2001-05-16 Thread Stafford, Brendan

Thanks,,,Looking forward to the show here in Boston in
July..

Brendan

I don't have the exact answer to that, Patty. But what I can tell you is
just what I've witnessed. I saw the Doobies at the Horseshoe Casino in
Bossier City, Louisiana on March 30th, and again on this past Friday at
the Richardson Wildflower Nights Festival. The shows were almost
the same. They opened with "China Grove" both times and closed with "Listen
to the Music" both times. They do a few of the classic favs at the beginning,
go into about 4-6 songs of their new stuff (off Sibling Rivalry), then
get back into their classic favorites. The show in LA, was a bit longer,
and because the size of the venue was relatively small, they were really
into it. They played some bluesy stuff and really got the crowd on their
feet. My boyfriend and I had asked the guy who was selling merchandise
for them how long they would play and he told us around 45 minutes (they
were the only act). Well, they played 1 hour and 40 minutes. It was so
awesome I just can't even describe it. I'm sure I was the youngest one
there - but that was kinda cool too! When they played in Richardson on
Friday, they were not the only act, (America and Grand Funk Railroad) and
so I'm assuming they had a limited amout of time to work with, although
they did start at 10 and go almost to 11:30. Plus this concert was outdoors
and I think that changes things too.
But, back to your original question...personally, I think that a general
set list is created, but modified from show to show. Plus they may decide
to change it up during a show depending on crowd reaction...that's always
a possibility. They were sure having fun when I saw them, and that in turn,
made me (and everyone else) have fun. Not to mention of course that I love
their music. But, they've certainly still "got it" and appreciate it too
it seems. The best is at the end of the show when typically the performers
would just end the last song, say good night and exit the stage. They don't.
They finish "Listen to the Music" and then as the crowd is going wild,
they gather at the front of the stage, join together and take a bow or
two. Then they start throwing their guitar picks and drum sticks and what
ever else they can out to the crowd. And eventually, mosey off stage. That
to me was the coolest part. It said a lot about them.
Sorry for such a long reply, but I wanted to share what I had experienced.
Can't wait to do it again!
Pamela

Since I am anxiously awaiting the DOOBIES visit to Atlantic City this
summer, I'm wondering about the process of how the set list is put
together.
Are the lists decided before the tour starts or are they customized
for each
city?
Curious in NJ,
Patty

PMTo: Doobies Fan ClubSubject: A LITTLE HISTORY - FAN CLUB
STYLE
DOOBS

In February, 1997, The Doobies (Big Mike) posted a
contest, which resulted in 31 lucky people seeing the Brothers in Laughlin,
Nevada - the dates, April 25 and 26, 1997.  It also became the genesis of
the Doobie Brothers Fan Club.

The original attendees at this first
convention/meeting, many of whose names you will recognize, and some you won't,
were:

Laurin Willis (nominated for President and
elected), Sheri Dawn Rosile, Courtney Carlson, Laurie Scifres, Jay Scifres, Tim
Isbell, Dale Dryden, Linda Dryden, David Eaton, Ryan Bjorn, Jeff Bjorn, Erin
Fitzpatrick-Bjorn, Roger Cunningham, Linda Cunningham, Joe Sabb, Renata Sabb,
Linda Guthertz-Sullivan, Lauretta Davis, Marla Rivera, Barbara Carlson, John
Rollason (who made the Fan Club Banner), Ryan, Marti Rabon, Nick, Rick
Santangelo, Dave Santangelo, Cliff Jones, Becky Jones, Ryan Smith and Ray
Janssen.  Not to mention a few drop insand who would forget Shannon,
our bartender?

Back then, the F/C printed some surveys as to
Favorite Songs (from 11/96 - 2/97), gathered from 52 fans and 91 songs receiving
at least one vote.  We also tackled Favorite Albums and Favorites not heard
at concerts (recently).  If anyone would like copies of these, let me know,
I'd be happy to post the results or mail them to you.

The Fan Club also set out some rather worthy
goals, which over the years have been more than accomplished:  Fan Club
Jacket, Fan Club Weekends/Conventions, Charities, Fan Club T-Shirts, Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame Campaign and the Box Set Campaignno we haven't succeeded
on everything, but have made great strides in all that has been done.  And,
I would say, that where Charities and Fan Club Conventions are concerned, there
has been total success.

Something else that came from that weekend were
some incredible friendships and sense of appreciation for one another, that to
this day, still exists for many of us.  We have kept in touch, we have
become known to each others families..we have remained friends.

It is trully distressful to see what has been
happening on the list lately.like Rodney King once said "can't we all just
get along?"

This Fan Club was formed out of the interests of a
group of people who still love the same thing today - THE DOOBIE
BROTHERSlet's not forget that, or what the F/C has stood for and should
remain to stand for.

Now with all that said, and for those of you who
took the time to read it, my thanks for 4 1/2 years of complete
pleasure.and, I look forward to the Reunion of the first ever Fan Club
Weekend (hope I'm not speaking out of turn, Laurin), at the River Run, Laughlin,
Nevada - April, 2002.

Hi
Folks,

I'm new to the list,been a Doobie fan for mucho years,love the music,not a
lurker usually(grin),don't post much, like to read the posts, love the
band.Personally I think there is nothing wrong with what i've seen so far in
relationship to the postings, whether Doobie or non-Doobie related.Anyways,I
belong to another list of my other favorite band, and they post the setlists
of the shows, whether the band was cooking, crowd reaction,etc..etc...,and I was
wondering if that's going to happen on this list from you people on the west
coast for us Easterners...would love to see it.

Brendan(in MA)

Quite frankly, Gina and Dave. I'm not
really interested in receiving e-mails about either topic, I only wish to
receive those that have a direct relationship to the band (i.e. concert
dates, personnel information, etc.).     I get SO many
e-mails from SO many different groups, I'd wind up reading all day.
For example, the "Pollstar Updates" that I always receive from Torrey G
Leininger  is of no value to me, because I'm already on Pollstars
automatic list.  However, I fully recognize that others have a
different type of relationship, and DO wish this kind of traffic.
Therefore, I personally only ask ONE thing, and that is that everyone
make an attempt to use the "Re:" box on their e-mail, and write that it is a
Doobie Bros. list e-mail, and very briefly what its about.  That way,
each of us may make our own personal decision to read or delete.  I
believe that this is a simple thing to ask, non-intrusive, and leads to
greater harmony on the list.  Unfortunately, for the number of times
that I have asked, too many still don't understand.
