And how does this hypothetical person get *to* your DQSD in the first place?

Either someone has physical access to your machine, or you've been
compromised and remote access is possible.

Neither of those concerns me. This machine is used by me and my SO. No one
else has physical access to it.

I am connected to a Linksys wireless router with a hardware firewall, and
also run a software firewall (Sygate Personal Firewall), which was in place
before I got the router, and left up because it does not conflict. The
local wireless net is secured. Every test I've run indicates I am fully
stealthed, and the only connections to the outside world are those I
initiate. I run automatically updated A/V software, check regularly for
spyware/malware, and visit the Windows Update site weekly to check for new
critical security patches.

Oh, yes -- I *don't* use IE as my browser. I use Mozilla, with both
SeaMonkey (the suite) and Firefox (the stand-alone browser) installed. IE
is used only to visit the MS Update site and occasional compatibility tests
on web pages. Depending upon just *where* I am poking around on the
Internet, I may also forward through an anonymous proxy.

And this machine has multiple physical drives. For the most part, stuff I
might be concerned about anyone seeing is on drives *other* than drive C:,
and Google Desktop has not been told to index them.

Am I 100% bulletproof? Who knows? Do I lose any sleep over it? I don't.

Again, not a concern here. I sweep for spyware regularly, using updated
definitions. I use Ad Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. The only things
either finds are "tracking" cookies, which I consider a nuisance at worst.
Since I *don't* use IE as my browser, these results are what I expect.

Even with the information "stored locally" there is significant
pause for contemplation. I store my email and ftp settings locally
as well, but is the software that I use likely to be readily
exploitable in order to obtain my information? Further, since Google
has indexed this information already, will someone that wants access
to it only have to drop into my DQSD and type "ggd password" to see
where all the passwords are stored (and previews of each)? Worse
even, how does the Google.com integration work? Is it 'before' the
content hits my browser, or after - via script, BHO or somesuch
locally? In each case, if the system has spyware of any sort then
the Google Desktop extends the capacity for exploitation since it
gives advanced access to priviledged content from valuable files
across my system.

Google also has an interesting response to this FAQ:

<<< >>>
7. Does Google collect information about me?

Google Desktop Search will not send any personally identifying
information, such as your name or address, to Google without your
explicit permission. So that we can continuously improve Google
Desktop Search, the application sends non-personal information about
things like the application's performance and reliability to Google.
You can choose to turn this feature off in your Desktop Preferences.
<<< >>>

Does that information include the search terms, keywords, index data
and system profile information? Sure this is not 'personally
identifying' but it surely identifies my PC capabilities, system
contents and performs a very high-level of *system* profiling which
could be used for rather significant aggressive 'other' uses - and
the rest of the Google services have interesting lapses in their
privacy coverage and limitations.
  http://google-watch.org/

Don't get me wrong - I've been using Google since '98. I've been
using Google Desktop since I wrote this search. But what do we
really know about what Google does with the information they have
access to? The search engine that has the term 'search engine' in
its pocket has an unlimited potential for exploitation. If you thnk
the number of people looking for holes in IE is bad because it has
the market-share it does - consider the number of people looking for
holes in Google! This month there were 3 vulnerabilities reported on
Full-Disclosure, one of which was a significant programming error
that exposed the way Google functioned. Uh - oops? The other two
were 'mere' cross-site scripting vulnerabilities. That's no big
deal, except it's Google.

Anyway... the jury is still out as far as I'm concerned.

The question is *where* the info is stored. The answer is *locally*.

>From http://desktop.google.com/privacyfaq.html#make_searchable
(Emphasis mine below)

2. What does Google Desktop Search do with the information on my computer?

After a successful installation, Google Desktop Search creates an index to
make your email, files, chats and web history searchable. This index enables
Google Desktop Search to find the information you're looking for in less
than a second. In addition to the index itself, Google Desktop Search stores
copies of the items it finds on your computer’s hard drive. This lets you
view older versions of files you’ve changed as well as web pages you’ve
visited, even when you're not connected to the Internet.

*Your Google Desktop Search index and copies are currently stored only on
your computer.*

This would happen only if the key did not exist in the Google Search
page. Sorry to ask:

1) Are you sure you have Google Desktop installed and running?

2) Did you disable the 'Google Integration' option in Google Desktop
to 'Show Desktop Search results on Google Web Search result pages'?

It won't work, of course, if it's not installed. The detection
method (though NOT the search) also requires the 'Google
Integration' to be enabled. After determining your Google Desktop
Key and setting the DQSD variable to that effect, you no longer need
to have the Google Integration option enabled.

switching over : there was no conversions for mail rules or import for news

Re: [DQSD-Users] Incorporate Google desktop search into DQSD - WORKS!

2004-11-03 Thread Tom Corcoran
Hi Shawn,

I tried the latest version with your #2 solution. Nothing happens when
http://reliableanswers.com/x/dqsd/ggd-discover.asp is loaded and nothing
happens on doing a re-scan. I don't know how to check if I have msxml
installed, I read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278674#kb2 and downloaded
xmlversion.exe but It didn't tell me anything I understood! In
windows\system (XP home SP1) I have
msxml.dll, msxml2.dll, msxml2r.dll, msxml3.dll, msxml3r.dll.

But then I reread you mail and opened it in IE! The page opens with the
message : Failure!
-2146828218 :: Permission denied.

I did not understand Method 2. I copied the soucre for
http://www.google.com/search?q=dqsd in there but was not sure what to do
with that...what happens once you drop the source in? After 10 seconds or so
in IE the message Failure! Could not determine key come up underneath it :-(

I downloaded the script and when I opened the ggd-discover.html page in
firefox it came up with a Javacript error "Failure! undefined::undefined".
Trying it in IE (firewall turned off) added the text : Add the following
line to your LocalPrefs.js file: ggd_googleKey = 'undefined'; to the page.

Thanks for all the efforts.

Cheers, Tom.

2004-11-03 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Steve,

> ...I'm not with you on this F8 thing. Could you
> clarify where F8 gets pressed.

Sure.

Use the following DQSD searches (just to 'seed' it so I can make
sure you have something to test it with). After each search just
close the google window that opens. The searches are intended only
to demonstrate the use of F8 later.

  freeware dqsd
  free dqsd
  free software
  free ftp software
  free xml software
  free xml sourcecode

No make sure the google windows are all closed. Now drop to DQSD and
type (without the quotes):

  soft

With only those four letters typed press F8. It should change the
content of DQSD to "free xml software". If you press F8 again it
should cycle to "free software". Likewise, if you change the text to
"ware" and F8 through the history you should hit "free xml
software", "free ftp software", "free software", then "freeware
dqsd" - if you've ever used the four letter 'ware' in anything else
you should also see those after the ones listed here. When it gets
to the 'end' of the listing it'll start cycling through the list
again. This can, at times, be a VERY large list - try typing only
'c' and press F8 to see just how long it can get (assuming you use
it to hit regular domains, too, this should be a pretty long list).
Try it with 'free' or 'source' and you'll see how it works.

Another spiffy feature is domain assertion. Like in IE, you can also
type in a 'root domain' (like "msn" or "yahoo") and press CTRL+ENTER
to have it automagically add "http:/www." and ".com" - I use this
all the time without even thinking about it. People think I'm a
really fast typist, but it's just that I know all the keyboard
shortcuts to avoid typing everything out completely. ;)

RE: [DQSD-Users] Incorporate Google desktop search into DQSD - WORKS!

> > again in the last few hours!

> Are you sure you reloaded DQSD (!)?

Aaaarrrh!

This is very strange. Apparently it only works if the particular
thread that is being used to 'discover' the key has been attached by
the Google Desktop Engine - IOW, there's no way to force it or
really ensure that it'll work 100% of the time. Use DQSD a *lot* and
it should work, but if you don't, it won't!

Okay. There's another way. For testing and to generate this entire
thing I was using a static HTML file for initially running the code.
Whenever 'that' works the DQSD version starts to work. But in order
to get that to work you have to download the HTML version and run
that separately. This could readily be a PITA for anyone wanting to
use this script.

I've got a couple options, let me know what you think:

1) Add the HTML file to the distribution. Set it somewhere in the
distribution where it can be used via openSearchWindow() so it'll
tel the user what to do when they /discover for the key. The benefit
of this method is that it should work from now to eternity as long
as Google doesn't change the way their code works, and it doesn't
rely on any remote servers being accessible (outside of Google, of
course).

2) Add a link within it to point to the script on my site (
http://reliableanswers.com/x/dqsd/ggd-discover.asp ). If you try
this link with a non-IE browser or a remotely secured IE browser it
will not work, since creating xmlhttp objects dynamically on a
webpage is anything but secure. It *does* provide a download link,
though, so if the code is broken by Google at some point all you'd
need to do is download the latest version from the page and run
that. Mind you XP SP2 users are going to have problems with it, too,
as long as they are running in the limited local sandbox mode. :(

I'm not seeing any good options here, really. I guess I should
provide instructions on how to manually 'discover' the key, too, for
those people that would rather do it themselves.

I guess I could provide a textarea that you could 'drop' the source
of a Google search into and it'll discover the key that way... Yeah,
I'll add that to the web-version.

Anyway, thought/opinions? Let me know.

Something else you can do along this line is type the part you
*know* was in the search and press [F8] - it'll cycle through all
the previous searches in your history that used that text. As
someone that uses DQSD at least a few times an hour (particularly
for some very long searches that can be as much as thirty or forty
characters).

Thanks once again Shawn for adding this search.

One kinda neat thing that I have noticed.
Google desktop indexes the DQSD history.txt file so if
you want to 'search
for a search' to speak you can now Google for it.
Sorta useful.

Thanks Shawn. I turned off my firewall and defintely have a connection to

Well, since I didn't actually *try* it on a system that doesn't have
Google Desktop installed it's hard to debug that part. :(

My guess is that either you were not online or DQSD was prevented
from accessing the Internet to determine the key (by your firewall
or something). What it does to get the key is 'google' for the term
DQSD then parse the results to determine the key within the html
code Google sends back. Kinda like how the RSSX and Comix searches
work.

RE: [DQSD-Users] Incorporate Google desktop search into DQSD - WORKS!

2004-10-31 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Steve,

> Yes!!! {home alone kid does fist punch)

Hehehe!

> Thank you very much indeed.

You're welcome.

Since it became apparent that this search posed a problem for people
to install, I've incorporated a method for 'discovering' the users
google desktop key automagically and provided the ability to set it
directly within your local prefs (so you don't need to 'discover' it
again every day).

I've attached the changed version. If you hit it as "ggd ?" it'll
tell you how to use the discover switch to find out what the local
google desktop key is.

On a completely unrelated note; I only installed Google Desktop to
play with since you mentioned that you needed a DQSD search for it.
Otherwise I probably never would have bothered with it. I haven't
decided yet if it's something I really care about. It's interesting
that I can now google (via DQSD, of course) normally and see what
results are related to my search in my Outlook, Windows Explorer and
IE history (it reads script and source-code files locally, too, so
it DOES help), and the Outlook part, at least, is very useful. But
I'm still not convinced that it's something I am willing to give up
my privacy for (read the google terms of service to see how they DO
track your usage of the Google Desktop).

Still contemplating features vs invasiveness. If it continues to
provide the effectiveness it has for searching my Outlook messages
and my 'webs' (currently developing 54 websites!) and programming
source code, this is going to be a rather difficult decision.

(I also updated the copy in CVS)

> your 286122300 with my 4238375878 Reload ok but

Let's try again. This time go to Google and actually search for
something under Google Desktop. The number will be different, and
the URL should look something like this:
  http://127.0.0.1:4664/search&s=286122300?q=dqsd
Only take the number out of the there (in this case 286122300) and
replace it with the one in the ggd.xml file.

The 'missing semicolon' error is because DQSD searches are XML
format, so any "&" characters must be XML encoded as "&" - the
url you copied it from did not have it properly encoded. This is
just a note in case anyone else ever sees this error. If you just
copy/paste the number from above it should be okay for you.

RE: [DQSD-Users] Incorporate Google desktop search into DQSD

Darn, I was afraid of that. It's using a special URL. If you click
on the 'Desktop' link at www.google.com what is the resulting URL?
Should be something like:
  http://127.0.0.1:4664/&s=1138275984

If you edit ggd.xml and change the "action" to the URL it gives you
there, it should work fine for you. Let me know if that works.

It had a bug in it. I've corrected it, committed it to CVS and
attached the latest copy.

Yes. I've attached a search that hits Google Desktop on your local
PC (ggd.xml).

I only just installed it, though, so I don't know for sure that the
URL's that it generates are truly consistent across every PC. For
example, your PC may have a different target than mine. Apparently
Desktop Search uses a key of some sort in the query URL. IOW, it may
not work for you without modification. Let me know if it doesn't
work and I'll tell you how to fix it.

To set it as your default search open up localprefs.js and add this
line:

defaultsearch="ggd";

RE: [DQSD-Users] Incorporate Google desktop search into DQSD

2004-10-29 Thread Paul

Here's a review of 6 desktop searchers (including Google Desktop), 5 of which, like
Google Desktop, are free. Google does *not* sound like it's currently the best free
one, though it's likely to eventually become the best.
