[drakelist] re:WTB: Power Connector for TR-7
I have a limited number of these connectors NOS. This is the female cable end that goes on the end of the cable from the PS-7 to the TR-7/7A. They are complete with the cable clamps and all screws. There may be some paint chips on the shells, but they are new and unused. $10.00 each plus $3.50 priority mail. No additional postage charge for multiple connectors to the same address. Please contact me direct if interested. 73, John, W4AWM

[drakelist] T-4x CW question and Intermit xmit
Many thanks to all who responded to my questions. I will start with the simple suggestions working down the list. We're supposed to get a few days of snow so I should have the time to start. I'm most comfortable with the easier suggestions. (bad eyes and fat fingers) For the CW I checked the 6ev7 on an Eico 667 tester and neither side shows any gassing, the tube looks remarkably good. next I'll move to the supply ripple check For the intermit tx, last I tried it, it was working, (the load cap looks like it might have a dead spot?) I'm hopping some cleaning will work that out. I appreciate the advice and suggestions. Will let you know how things work out. Again thanks, 73 George KB2Z
[drakelist] T-4X Output Dies
Hi George, Are you transceive with the R-4, or just using the T-4X? My C line would do that from time to time. Full output then drop to nothing. Turned out to be a dirty VFO selector. I know it sounds too simple, but it wouldn't be the first time we've seen it on the list Rick K9RSW -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - subscribe drakelist in body Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --
Re: [drakelist] T-4x Output Dies Intermittently
George -- I had a similar problem with my T-4XC that even made John Kriner scratch his head before he found the culprit. I was experiencing intermittent transmit that seemed to be heat relatedthe problem ended up being the junction between CR6 and CR8 inside the balanced modulator can was intermittently shorting to the case. Once he'd cleaned up that junction and made sure it was well away from the inside of the can the problem has not returned. You may also want to check CR19 with comes off the cathode of V4 (12BY7 driver) -- some have reported it to be cracked and causing intermittent operation; I found that one leg of mine was cold soldered to the tie point (although that unfortunately wasn't my problemnuts, would have saved a trip to Dr. Kriner!). You can find a web link to this article from WB4HFN's home page. Good luck! RE: [drakelist] T-4x Output Dies Intermittently
Hi George, I was wondering, do you have plate current when the output dies? Is the plate current steady (ie; doesn't drop or rise) when the transmit power stops? If it was a relay dropping out, you would most likely here it dropping. You might just have a loose or cold solder joint in the RF output stage or driver circuit. But if the driver were dropping out, then the plate current would drop to the BIAS setting, or plate current resting point. I would start by setting it up into a dummy load and let it transmit (at very reduced power) until it quits, making sure not to exceed the duty cycle limit of the transmitter and when it quits, tap around the driver and RF cage with a non conducting (Maybe plastic) tool until you either determine that nothing is loose or find something loose and just repair it. You might also find that all is tight, and then you need to determine where you are loosing signal, in the driver stages or in the final output stage. When you have isolated the stage that the signal disappears in, then start the process of trouble shooting that stage. You could have a thermal problem with a component in the offending stage. Hope this helps you. If I was a betting man, I would bet the problem is in one of the driver stages, because if you had any of the problems I just suggested in the final stage, you would most likely have physical indications such as arching and smoke. 73, Mike - K7OV -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of George KB2Z Sent: Sunday, January 25, 2004 12:11 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [drakelist] T-4x Output Dies Intermittently Good afternoon all; Thanks for the reply's to my CW question. Re: [drakelist] Quick T-4x CW question
Hi George, That's a problem that seems to plague most of us at one time or another. The most often problem, other than mis-adjustment, is a gassy 6EV7. For adjustment, the manual says to increase the vox gain until the relay pulls in (and stays), then adj. the vox delay (on the rear) so it drops out after a delay to suit you. Your beginning statement, plate current at abt .09a -- the relay has operated with the key up, you may have a little carrier which is driving the finals above the .07 bias setting. The relay control in these is in an unexpected manner, there's an audio oscillator (sidetone generator) and the key directs that signal to the 6EV7. It has 2 triode stages, the first an amp, the 2nd gets a rectified signal and drives the relay. There's a spike generated at key closure to drive the relay closed instantly at key-down, that's what makes it click & release if it doesn't hold in. The grid ckts, particularly the 2nd one, are high impedance, and almost anything that's not too normal will upset it. Things that can do it - the bias supply having ripple, the LV supply having ripple, the cathode resistors for the 6EV7 off value, leaky bypass or coupling caps, bias voltage not set right, and probably more that I can't remember at the moment. Some have suggested using a zener diode in the cathode(s) to provide a fixed bias. 6EV7's aren't real common, and DrakeMods suggests: "A 6AQ8 will replace the 6EV7 if a 47 ohm 2 watt resistor is added across pins 4 and 5 of V10. The tube change is applicable across the entire 4 line (and TR3). The resistor IS NOT needed in any of the transceivers. Just swap the tube, in this case." I'm presently trying to nail down the same trouble in a T-4XB. Sometimes it'll work fine for a while, then will do as yours does. I have 3 6EV7's I've tried out, one is brand new old stock. All test a little gassy on the Hickok 6000A (why do 6EV7's seem to be so prone to that?). The new one's the best. Any will work for a while at least. I'm checking ripple on 2 AC-4's, that could be part of my problem. i"ve checked ckt component values, all look OK, but need to do a good ck on several caps. I hope this helps you some. 73, Al, W8UT New Bern, NC BoatAnchors appreciated here http://www.thecompendium.net/radio/ http://www.hammarlund.info - Original Message - From: "George KB2Z" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, January 25, 2004 7:37 AM Subject: [drakelist] Quick T-4x CW question > Good morning all, > > I have a quick T-4x CW question. > I'm new to the Drakes and this question might seem a bit lame, but here goes. > When in CW mode the meter reads about +/- .09A with the key up. RE: [drakelist] 2-NB coil value?
It looks like about 1.8mH would resonate with the 68pf cap across the coil but I think even an RF choke will work in this circuit. I breadboarded a similar circuit way back when and didn’t have the excact coil needed however I found a 455kHz IF transformer with a tapped primary and used it. Just leave the secondary open. The circuit was very similar in operation to the R-4B noise blanker except the 2-C version was all solid-state. Effective on pulse type interference. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of KS7J Sent: Saturday, January 24, 2004 11:24 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [drakelist] 2-NB coil value? All, the 4 pin power connectors are available fro three resources, Newark and Mouser to start. On my Drake website I have a complete section on available parts and pieces for the Drake equipment.Mark Gilger, WB0IQK, has a nice article, found on the website, which among a lot of other parts, list all three vendors for the power connector, along with part numbers and contact information. take a look, here is a link to that article. http://www.wb4hfn.com/DrakeArticles/TechTips/DrakeResources.htm 73, Ron / WB4HFN - Original Message - From: "Lauri D. [drakelist] Help with unlocked TR7
I just purchased a used TR7. When I power it up, all of the display lights come on, but the dsiplay reads something like 96Mhz, with some flickering up/dwn a couple of herts. Turning the band switch and using up/dwn buttons has no effect. The store button does store the (erroneous) freq I can't tune in any signals, but all of the rest of the rig seems to work - ie af and rf gain, filter switches, etc. I would guess that either the synthesiser isn't locking, or some other osc isn't wrkng. From looking at this bulletin board, it seems that reseating a card might wrk. How do i identify the right card, and how is it pulled without damaging something? I don't have the service manual yet. Anything I can quickly do to check this out? Is it usually an easy problem to fix, or is it something drastic? It is a fairly late model TR7, around 10,000 s/n Also, how do I pull the ckt boards to reseat them. Can the edge connectors be cleaned? Finally, anything in general I should be checking to get the rig in overall shape. Your help would be greatly appreciated! 73 Walt _ _ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. [drakelist] Quick T-4x CW question
Good morning all, I have a quick T-4x CW question. I'm new to the Drakes and this question might seem a bit lame, but here goes. When in CW mode the meter reads about +/- .09A with the key up. (bias set to .07) There is no output unless the tx is keyed Is this normal, (.09A) or is the relay hanging? I dont hear it cycling. ( Meter at 0, in SSB unless PTT) When I try adjusting the vox it sounds like the relay kicks on and off, very fast, when keyed ( output goes up and down fast with relay) The meter reads 0, before and after the relay cycles after playing with vox, but clicks on and off to fast to transmit. Thanks in advance for any input, advice, or suggestions, George KB2Z
