[drakelist] AC4 Plug
G3SJJ [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I am currently renovating a 4B Line and would like to reduce the length of the power cable from the AC4 psu and also replace the short speaker cable. Re: [drakelist] AC4 Plug
Garey Barrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Chris - Yes, that pin is the key! It is pressed in, with a small head on one end. The shank has a long twist to it. I remove them by starting with a punch on the small end (natcherly!) and then pull from the head end. I've had good luck using small needle nose pliers grasping the shank and then working the widening plier jaws under the head to ease the pin the rest of the way out. Much easier to do than describe! If you have a real pin punch that is small enough, that's fine, but I never have had one. 73, Garey - K4OAH Atlanta Drake R-4C Service Information CD http://www.k4oah.com G3SJJ wrote: G3SJJ [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I am currently renovating a 4B Line and would like to reduce the length of the power cable from the AC4 psu and also replace the short speaker cable. [drakelist] OOOOPS! TR-7 RF pickup cured (I hope)]
Craig Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Sorry 'bout that. I accidently hit Send before completing and proofreading the message. Anyway, to reiterate: Here's a handy household hint from a guy who's not afraid to admit his sloth-like problem-solving abilities. (That would be me). Since acquiring the radio a few weeks ago, I had been plagued with RF in my TR-7's transmitted audio on 20 meters. Since my antennas for that band are very close to the shack (right overhead), I figured that was the source of the problem. I built a line isolation choke for the coax feedline, but the problem remained. Then, on the Heil Sound website, I read that many mikes are prone to RF pickup through their floating mike connectors. A minor mike plug rewiring was suggested. I performed the mod, but still the problem remained. Then, late last night, I got a clean report. How could this be? What had changed? Well, what had changed was that I had unplugged the foot switch I was using for PTT. Apparently, the long switch leads were picking up the RF and injecting it into the mike input circuitry. When using the (awkward) PTT switch built into my Heil Classic mike, I have no RF problem. 73, Craig W3CRR -- Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

[drakelist] RE: TR-7 RF pickup cured (I hope)]
Craig Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Thanks, Evan. As a matter of fact, I ordered a footswitch from Heil a little while ago. In all fairness, my problem footswitch is a ten dollar Radio Shack model which I did not modify in any way. What can I expect, eh? Heil claims their footswitch is well shielded and should pose no RF pickup problems. Another reason I got it is that it incorporates two switches. One makes slightly before the other. While of little use in my barefoot TR-7 setup, this will be useful with my ancient Collins 32V-2 / R-388 AM/CW combo since I'll be able to energize the receiver disabling relay before triggering the PTT circuit in the transmitter. I'll report back on the RF immunity (or lack thereof) when I get the Heil switch. Your comment about the most vulnerable component in the Heil headset being fashioned of Unobtanium resonated with me. That's why I now try to find products that contain both rugged and replaceable bits. One example is the pair of headphones I use. They're from Califone (www.califone.com). These are the bulletproof 'phones we used in high school language lab many decades ago. I've rolled over them with my desk chair a few times (cheap entertainment) and they don't even show a scratch. They're 600 ohm, sound great (really!) and have -- if ever need be -- fully replaceable components. And you can get them for less than ten bucks from school outfitters (like, umm, www.schooloutfitters.com). Your DJ headset is another wise and durable buy. Re: [drakelist] TR-7 RF pickup cured (I hope)
Check for an intermittant shield break in the mic cable. Also you might think about adding or subtracting the length of the cable which might just happen to be a resonant length on 20. 73, John, W4AWM
