THANK YOU Joe for the nice job on the log books!

And THANK YOU to all involved with the Drake forum again this

"paid" column, but one of them (at least) picked up and paid at
Dayton, and you appear to have missed the significance.
Perhaps there were others like that.

2007-05-23 Thread Garey Barrell

Garey Barrell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Dan -

I'm not sure I understand your question. The Noise Blanker works by
turning the receiver IF _OFF_ for the duration of a noise pulse. It
works very well on very narrow spikes such as generated by auto spark
plugs. As the noise pulses get wider, or closer together, they begin to
"punch" bigger and bigger "holes" in the audio. If you think of a
single tone signal such as a carrier, if there is a noise source present
and you turn on the NB, your nice clean tone will become very raspy as
it is interrupted by the NB to "blank" each pulse of noise.

There is a graphical representation of this process on the cover of the
R-4B manual. The top circle shows the signal with noise pulses present,
and depressing the IF gain because of the AVC. The lower circle shows
the same signal, with the NB on, and shows the "holes" that are punched
in the signal. The advantage is that the noise pulses are no longer
depressing the AVC, allowing the desired signal to be much "bigger",
albeit with a few holes punched in it. Obviously if the noise pulses
are wide and or closer together the holes get big enough to blank most
of the signal as well.

The NB does not have any real effect on noise such as static crashes
from thunderstorms, etc. as the noise is such a wide "pulse".

Sorry if this is something you already know, but we gotta start
somewhere! :-)

Thanks Gary!

I should have explained it better, but first I had to get someone's
attention!

The audio on my R4B is just fine until I turn the function switch to NB.
It's not
because the noise blanker has any noise to blank. The roughness actually
sounds
as if there is an extra carrier inserted. You know how audio sounds when
you approach zero
beat? The "normal" SSB audio has a character like it's almost at zero
beat. I hear a beating
in the audio, I guess you could say. Since everything else is normal
when the function
switch is in ANY position other than "NB", I am assuming that whatever
circuitry is switched

in to do the noise blanking, is causing the problem.

I can troubleshoot this. I can read schematics just fine. I have been a
broadcast engineer
for over 35 years, and a licensed amateur for 43 years. I don't know
everything of course,
hence my questions. I was just wondering if anyone had this experience
with their R4Bs.

I'm lazy and thought someone could tell me how to fix it!!!

I'll have two nice R4Bs for sale soon if anyone is interested.

OK. Well we have a broad range of experience on here so I usually start
out simple! :-)

V9 and V10 are only used for the NB. V9 (12BA6) is the Noise Amp, and
in the later "B" version is AGC controlled. The NB switch only grounds
the cathode of the IF shunt section of V10 (12AX7) so really doesn't
change anything else. You could try pulling V9 (all filaments are in
parallel) and then switching on the NB. Pulling V10 doesn't really
prove anything since with it out, the NB switch doesn't do anything
other than hang a high resistance voltage divider across the +150 line.
I haven't seen any consistent problem with the NB circuit, although
Drake did make some changes to the AVC control of V9, indicating there
may have been a problem. Does signal strength seem to have any effect
on the problem?

The only thing that comes to mind is that the 12BA6 is prone to gas or
grid emission, and the 12AX7 at V10 does sometimes have heater-cathode
leakage issues. Pulling and then perhaps substituting those two is
where I'd start.

What is the s/n of the unit you have? The AVC change on V9 was made at
s/n 10501. The NB circuit was unchanged otherwise through all versions
from s/n 7000 on.

One more "off the wall" thought. The switch tag that turns on the NB is
right next to the tag that turns on the calibrator. The calibrator puts
out a nice strong signal at 50 kHz, right at the third IF.
Contamination of the gap by spray contact cleaners, or a worn drive hole
in the switch wafer may let it go just a little bit too far? (I SAID
it was off the wall, but in 45 years of working on Drake gear I've seen
more than a few off the wall problems! :-)

I have no idea where he gets his parts from except for maybe parting out
rigs. ( i hope not)
but I have purchased from him, and he seams pretty good to deal with, no
problems here.

  Hey, all -

I've run across a NOS (new, old stock) Drake parts source. It's one of the
stores on Ebay called "The Man's Amateur Parts Supply." The owner, someone
called TR7dude, has at least 10 pages of parts listed, with photos. The "Buy
It Now" prices aren't all that bad, even. For those of you looking for PCB's
for a TR7 or a hard to get Drake crystal, this may be just the thing to get
some of those rigs back on the air.

You may all already know about this guy - I can hardly believe he's got such
a large supply of unused parts - Where did he get this stuff?

The wire colors vary so I cannot just say how to connect it by color. If
you remove the bottom, you should find a wiring diagram for that mic
glued to the inside bottom and a terminal strip that connects the cable.
If you don't have a diagram inside, you'll have to poke with a VOM. On
the connector to the T4X itself, The PTT is the tip, the mic element is
the ring, and the shield is obviously ground/common. They are high
impedance, but I don't remember if mine is crystal or not. I bought it
new 30 years ago. When did I get old?

Greetings, all:

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a D104 that will work for a Drake
T4X?  I have the unamplified model G.  OH!  And how do you
test the element in it, or know whether it’s ceramic, crystal, etc?

They are VERY high impedance. Terry, if the mic sounds too "tinny" or seems
lacking in low end on the air, you can try putting a 470K resistor in series
with the audio line. This is an old trick to "mellow out" the D104 sound.
Google for D104 abd you will find all sorts of info.

Of course, if you have a deep (bass) voice, the stock crystal element works
pretty well - at
least it does for me.

John Kriner still works for Drake or did a year ago.

He bought a large amount of the surplus parts that Drake was dumping about 7
years ago. Steve Morgan, K8FFO had a bunch of it and the Drake club at
Drake got a bunch of it. I have not seen Steve selling anything since John
started so John is mostly the only source of large amounts of NOS Drake
parts. As mentioned earlier he is also a Drake repair tech for himself as a
side business. These new parts were what was left in Drakes parts shelves
when they discontinued service/support for the 4 line and then the 7 line.
For a year or so Drake was selling those parts to us through their website
at about 25 cents on the dollar and then Steve, the Drake club, and John
bought what was left.

I will also echo the fact that John is a great guy to deal with and will do
you right.

Thank you.
