Lots of folks start lists for lots of reasons...

Some don't like the way a list operates(we had way too much
discussion about that on this list)

Some don't like the policy of a list owner
Some feel a specialized list is needed.
Some need an ego boost.

One advantage of having others lists is that if the primary one
diesthere are established alternatives.

The disadvantage is that multiple lists force users to subscribe to
many of they want all the posts.

Re: [Drakelist] The un-needed OTHER Drake List

2010-08-13 Thread Garey Barrell

Well, I guess I have to answer this, since it was obviously aimed at me.

I don't know 'why' the 'other' list was started, just that I was asked a
couple of years ago if I would help moderate it. Since it had a LOT of
members and was pretty active, I agreed. About a year ago the original
owner asked if I would take over the list as he had lost interest and/or
didn't have the time to invest in it. By then it had 450 members, and
seemed to be about the same activity as Drakelist, just at different
times. One list will have a little flurry of activity, then the other,
but rarely at the same time.

So. Point one, people DO lose interest and just 'go away'. Others end
up in the hospital for three months and are unable to even operate a
mouse. So it certainly does NOT hurt to have a second, known, 'backup'
if you will, list in operation. I figured the 450+ members indicated
there was 'some' purpose' being served and it was therefore worth 'saving'.

Point two, Yahoo groups are a very large operation, and 'new' people
looking for a list will probably go there first, so it doesn't hurt us
to have a presence there. I'm sure that just about every member of that
list is also a member of this list. I DO have a few people join every
week that I have never heard of before, so I suspect that perhaps they
are NOT members here.

Point three. I DO NOT see 'my' list as a competitor to Drakelist. If
someone asks me about lists I always give them the information on both.
SOME people do not like the 'mailman' system for some reason, some
'trust' Yahoo, and some 'hate' Yahoo. Whatever!

Point four. Although both lists are somewhat active, I rarely see a
'cross-post', which is a very good thing. I subscribe to and contribute
to both, and see them both as a positive for the Drake community. I
actually subscribe to one called 'drake-radio-operat...@yahoo' which has
about one post every three-four months. I respond and direct them to
these two lists so they don't think the Drake community is dead!

Personally, I do NOT like multiple 'sub-lists' that seem to pop up for
every minute sub-culture. If we followed 'some' examples, we'd have a
separate list for R-4C's with FET IF amps.! But I DO think there is
some small advantage to having two 'primary' lists in operation,
_especially_ if the users are smart enough to NOT cross-post.

Re: [Drakelist] The un-needed OTHER Drake List

2010-08-13 Thread Phbjr
This may be oranges apples but I like to think of equipment lists in
much the same way that I view on-line classifieds. For the latter I use
eHam, QTH.com, etc. and find all to be useful. Would it make it easier if I
only had to search for gear on one list? Well, sure, just as it would be
easier if I only had to watch one Drake List for info of interest.

But the big plus side of multiple equipment lists is analogous to
multiple Wanted/For Sale lists: When *I* want to ask a question (just as
when I want to sell a piece of gear) I reach a much wider audience by using
more than one list.

So, I'm willing to put up with some glitches or delays on equipment
lists just as I'm willing to put up with (occasionally annoying) differences
in format search techniques on classified lists. Nothing is ever perfect
(and as far as Wanted/For Sale lists are concerned I don't *EVER* want to
go back to QST Classifieds or monthly yellow sheets or any of that stuff.
On-line is so much more efficient it isn't even funny).

And BTW: Thanks, Garey, for all you have done and do for the Drake
aficionados.

Personally, I'm thankful there are folks with enough energy, intelligence,
interest, and time to run lists. And, I can't thank Garey enough for the
expertise he continually shares regarding Drake equipment. Without his
help, most of my Drake gear would still be broken.

Multiple lists don't bother me a bit and if they did, unsubscribing is very
easy. I regularly and easily drop off lists that no longer interest me,
that prove to have no traffic, or send spam . Certainly have no response

[Drakelist] Drake 2B crystal prices

2010-08-13 Thread Phbjr
Just as an FYI, the following web page allows one to calibrate current
pricing against what things used to cost:

_http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm_
(http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm)

In 1962, Drake sold 2B accessory crystals for $5.00 each (per the 2B
manual). There is no mention of a shipping charge although there may have
been one (postage).

Using the calculator above, the 2010 equivalent price per crystal is
$36.09 plus shipping.

The fact that the actual base price for said crystals today seems to
run between $16 - $25 each probably reflects improved efficiency in the
manufacturing process. It is also worth remembering that Drake's original $5
price may have reflected an economy of scale if they ordered them in
quantity, whereas we today are ordering them (if from a crystal manufacturer)
specially made, one at a time. Had the latter been the case in 1962 they
*might* have cost more than $5 each, which might make today's typical price
all the more attractive since the 2010 equivalent of the 1962 one-off
manufactured price would be somewhat higher than the $36 estimate noted above.

So, IMHO today's prices are quite reasonable.

2010-08-13 Thread Garey Barrell
This is probably the longest thread that's been on either list for quite
a while!

I see absolutely no reason anything should be ruined, Thom does (and HAS
done for a LONG time) an excellent job with this list, and I've at least
tried to maintain the 'other' list. I always give newcomers both lists
and encourage them to join both. I don't know that there's a whole lot
of difference between them as far as content, Thom rarely interferes
here, (and always politely,) and so far at least I've not had to pipe up
on the other one. We're all (mostly!) adults and unlike our politicians
can 'agree to disagree' peacefully :-)Personally, I just think
Drake users are better people all around!

As I said earlier, no-one seems to 'cross-post' (meaning send a post to
two or more lists by cc'ing, separate messages are ok but generally
unnecessary) so it's no big deal to subscribe to all the Drake lists.
There are a lot of people who subscribe to both but only post on one for
one reason or another.

Well there might be better ways, but I always tune for max, then reduce the

[Drakelist] OT: R-4 # 727

2010-08-13 Thread Phbjr
Assuming it still exists, someone out there has R-4 s/n 727. I was the
original owner (purchased in 1964, sold in 1979 or thereabouts). I am also
the one who reamed a spinner depression in the tuning knob (also assuming
it still has the original knob).

This radio has an interesting history. For 4 years (1964-68) it was
installed in the ET shop of USS BELMONT (AGTR-4), a U.S. Navy intelligence
ship. It thus traveled to South America (3 times including one
circumnavigation), Africa (both coasts), and out into the south-central
Pacific. In
1969 it traveled with me to Morocco and remained there until we returned to
the U.S. in 1971. It also lived on the Outer Banks of NC from 1972-73.

I have many interesting photos of this radio: Aboard ship; in a
quonset hut in Kenitra, Morocco; in use as a downlink receiver with OSCAR-6
OSCAR-7; as the back end of a 6m/2m SSB/CW station.

If you have the radio and want copies of the pix, email me. Not many
radios have traveled so far around the world.

Re: [Drakelist] Low power tuning

2010-08-13 Thread Ronald Erickson
It is the tuning and drive that heats up tubes. When you turn down the
drive the power you are using is determined by accuracy of your meters or
Bird watt meter into load. You can use a dummy load that is 50 ohms or so
to figure your power off the air. I like using noise bridges when I can.

  Good evening All,

Well, for years I was a QRP nut and all I had was my TR-4CW. I tuned it
up as per the manula and then, with key down backed off the xmtr gain to QRP
levels and operated that way. I did that with CW and also SSB. How
accurate was it? I am not sure. The finals seem to hold up after all of
 these years.

Well there might be better ways, but I always tune for max, then reduce
the drive (xmtr gain). I think technically the tubes are not actually
perfectly tuned when you just back off the drive but I don't think the
tubes will care. I also think the vox setting might need some tweaking when
 you do this.

Rookie tube radio guy here Hi Hi. How do I tune my TR-4 to less than
 maximum power?

 Thanks,
