[Drakelist] L4B Plate Choke
I just opened up my L4B to do some minor work on it. I noticed that the plate choke looks like it has overheated - discolored brown around the middle of it. Wonder if anyone has experienced this - common problem with the L4B? Or a symptom that something is wrong? The amp works fine otherwise - good power out, no sign of parasitics. I do work it hard in contests, and run full power in CW. TIA, Wayne N1WR___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] L-4B
Just purchased a drake l-4b. Connecting to a 220v circuit in shack. Any thoughts on connecting a new wire and plug and cord with a ground to the amp. In other words, connecting a chassis ground to the electrical ground in the circuit. (of course in addition to your station ground).. Re: [Drakelist] First Rigs - If you could do it all over again, what would your first station be?
Lots of good stories - I couldn't resist adding mine. I grew up in a poor family, and got my novice license in 1961 - WV2VFV (hows that for a cw call). My first reciever was a Lafayette three tube regen. receiver ($15 was within my Christmas present limit). I saved up for a DX-20 and a couple crystals. I quickly found out that the regen receiver was NOT going to work very well, and managed to upgrade to a used S-20R. When I got my general I built a homebrew pair of 807's - cw only of course. After that I built a QST article transmitter - a pair of 6GJ5's plate modulated, got me on phone (SSB was just starting to take hold in the early sixties). I can still recall the excitement of my first phone contact with Europe (France). I later found a brand new Geloso G-212 (I think) which I bought from Arrow Electronics in Mineola, NY. They had imported the Geloso receiver-transmitter pair with the idea of selling them. These initial two units were as far as they went with the Italians. My next rig was an Heath SB-102 - and I thought I died and went to heaven smile. Always knowing that I was struggling to make the hobby work on a very restricted budget somehow added intrigue to the effort. I learned how to make due with what I had and squeeze every ounce of performance out of meager equipment. Still going strong in the hobby with a K3 with a very good 'ol L-4B at its side. 73, Wayne N1WR (ex WA2VFV, WA1RFI, N1WR/YV5, N1WR/KP4) ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

The TT Orion II with the noise blanker is only slightly better hopefully more than just me have been helped by all the excellant advice! I have found the problem.it is in fact here in my house! (Thanks God!) It is the Control box for the Constant Pressure Well' It is 230 VAC, single phase...but it make 3 Phase power for the well! It is made by Franklin Electric. This is a new house and it was part of the new construction... SO, why did I not find it when I turned everything off. I Have a Geo furnace that uses well water (open system) so when the furnace runs so does the well pump. Last night I was looking for this problemand I noticed the noise WAS preset even when the furnace was NOT running. So I did not shut off the wellBUT now I know that my wife was doing laundry last night! So, I was not thorough enough in my turning off loads. I skipped the one that was the culprit. Now the hard part..I sure do need my heat...so I will have to call Franklin Electric tomorrow and try to get help on thisf they do not have an answer or jut say tough cookies..what to do??? THANKS to everyone that provided suggestions they were all good and I have them saved for any future issues. 73, Lee, KC9CDT Lee Simmonds Summit DCS 260-799-4077 Office 260-403-6936 Cell -Original Message- From: Bob Marchese bobmarch...@comcast.net To: drakelist drakelist@zerobeat.net; kc9cdt kc9...@aol.com Sent: Tue, Dec 21, 2010 9:35 pm Subject: Re: [Drakelist] OT Help on RF interference (New QTH) Hi Lee, You mentioned, tonight about every 10-15 minutes. I have a pulsing RF noise about every 40-50 KC. If it were audio I would describe it as the sound of an old pump, (maybe 10 times a second) or something. It does top and go...tonight about every 10-15 minutes or so...ot exactly though. It's winter here. The signal is about 20 KC wide and repeats ever 50 KC. starts at 80 mtrs goes all the way to 10. Any ideas, or is there a better list to go to for help on this. Yes, I have turned off evey breaker in my house in sequence...it ain't here. Closest neighbor is about 250 ft. I'm at a small lake out in the country with maybe 180 houses around it...only 30% here this time of year. 73, Lee ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

Re: [Drakelist] rubber feet for ac-4
Am I missing something - these rubber feet are available at hardware stores. For example Ace has them: http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/%282ex2pyfscyjubp45etslnr45%29/SearchResults.aspx?SimpleSearchValue=rubber+bumper+round They list two sizes - 1 and 7/8 but I've seen other sizes (smaller). IF you HAD the feet, you could use them to hold the supply in also, and if more had done that back in the 60's they wouldn't be so hard to find today. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

William Rogers [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hi Garey! Received your Drake 2B info CD in the mail. Thank you for your tips in the enclosed note. I found 2 bad 6BE6s. Putting one back in made the voltage drop to about -14 V. Putting the other one in dropped the voltage way down (less than -10). I replaced both with 5750 tubes and the Drake 2B now works like a champ. Will try to secure a couple of spares just in case. Guys, if the TR series is as good or better than the 2B series, it will be of great assistance in working on these boatanchor gems! Re: [drakelist] Drake Nets
Good afternoon. I'm new to the list. I've had a T4XB and an R4B sitting on my workshop shelf for way too long and have decided to bring it back to life. Don't have a lot of experience with Drake, but do have 40 plus years in the hobby and an electronics background, though I haven't done a lot of electronics work recently. So - I'm starting with the T4XB. It works, but power output is low. Here's what I get (into dummy load, tuned for max power out, per manual): Po = 70 W Ip = 200 mA Vp = 690 V Bias = -55 V (70mA resting current) Looks to me like I need new finals. Am I missing anything? Want to be certain. Also, can someone recommend a reliable source for 6JB6's? Thanks 73, Wayne N1WR Lusby, MD

Will Rogers [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hi gang! Wonder if I am in over my head... Have a 2b with a terrible if oscillation problem. The s meter hangs at about s9. It is so bad I cannot get a read on the 50kHz bfo to set it up. It squeals like crazy unless there is a strong signal then it sounds sort of ok... If I put it in the .5 bandwidth, the squealing stops and the s meter drops back to one. Any ideas?
