[drakelist] Deaf TR4
Ken Bessler [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I turned on my TR4 this morning to find it deaf. I tried tuning up and found the plate meter would peg on tx even with the power turned all the way down. What's more, I have to give the old girl a thump to get her to unkey now. I know - TX/RX relay How do I remove it and test it? Where can I get a replacement? Is it the relay or am I guessing wrong? Garey Barrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Ken - More likely a Bias supply failure. Probably a shorted electrolytic capacitor in the AC-4. The Bias supply should read approximately -65 VDC at the transceiver. Most all the AC-4 power supply filter caps are years past their life expectancy and are just waiting for the most inopportune time to die! The AC-4R board/kit from Mike Bryce at the Heathkitshop is the ideal way to deal with the problem, and set your supply to work for the next 30 years. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B C-Line Service Supplement CDs www.k4oah.com Ken Bessler wrote: Ken Bessler [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I turned on my TR4 this morning to find it deaf. Re: [drakelist] Deaf TR4
Garey Barrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Ken - Hopefully you have turned off the Transceiver!! Here is an article on the AC-4 power supply that should help you repair it. http://tinyurl.com/fd5o5* This will help you identify the problem component(s). You can probably effect a quick repair by replacing C5a and C5B. Twist-lok caps are just about extinct now, but you can install tubular caps under the chassis, but be sure to disconnect all wiring from the C5 terminals. You may also have to replace D7, a 1N4007 will replace it. For long term, I would highly recommend doing the AC-4R upgrade as described here: *http://tinyurl.com/344dr6 Let us know if you need more help. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B C-Line Service Supplement CDs www.k4oah.com Ken Bessler wrote: Ken Bessler [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I measure -26.63Vdc at pin 9 Ken 73's de Ken KG0WX - Kadiddlehopper #11808, Flying Pigs #-1055, Grid EM17ip -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

About the size of a BNC connector. Now, if I'm reading the schematic right, the + lead of the new C5a should go to the junction between D7 and R7. Right? Capacitor technology has really progressed in the last 40 years!! :-) If your DMM has a Diode Test function, usually identified on the Range switch with a diode symbol (-|-), a good diode will read about 0.600 - 0.650 in one direction, and if you reverse the leads it should then read Open or whatever it reads on the Ohmmeter range with the leads not touching each other. Garey Well, I replaced C5a/b and C11 (it had had the upper 20% of itself blown off). I tested D7 out of circuit and it checked out OK so I re- attached it and started testing. -62.53v on the bias now and the radio is operating normally. I did a MDS test on 80/40 20m and the reciever checked out fine. Could I be imagining things or are my backlights bluer now? The S meter really looks a lot less green and more blue now. My guess is the power supply is putting out more voltage now and the lightbulbs are glowing whiter than before. I also noticed that it takes far less drive to get full power than before. As a matter of fact, the upper/lower indiccators look brighter than before Maybe the old C5a/b was pulling down the power supply?
