Re: [DX-NEWS] Scarborough Reef Press Release Number 14

2007-05-06 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Don, I am sure I speak for everyone here..THANK YOU for keeping us
all up to date

I know the pilot job is virtually thankless, so consider this your
"tip" if you will ;-)

Those that are in the log congratulations (don't gloat, just be
happy) To those not in the log..remember there's always tomorrow

To those who now qualify for #1 Honor Roll, congratulations.
Remember, your DXCC field checkers can now check all QSL cards going
back to 1945 (but not for 160) So fill out your forms correctly,
contact your Field Checker and go to it.

Bill Moore and the DXCC gang will be at Dayton, so there's your
opportunity.

Again, thanks from everyone on DX-NEWS

We seem to be having a minor glitch..

It seems that some people trying to make posts are having them

Be assured, it is not that you were banned or the refelctor is being
moderated, because even my posts are not making it through 100%

Please feel free to continue discussion on our DX-CHAT reflector

Remember these 2 things:

The 1st post is almost always NEWS, everything after that is CHAT.

AND 2, based on the direct responses..I would suggest the political
commentary be held to a minimum. I already see the flames starting

[DX-NEWS] IRAQ amateur radio shutdown

2007-03-13 Thread Steve-KF2TI
>From the ARRL website

--
--
Amateur Radio activity shut down in Iraq (Mar 13, 2007) -- Iraq
Amateur Radio Society (IARS) President Diya Sayah, YI1DZ, has
informed ARRL that all Amateur Radio activity in Iraq has been
suspended until the security situation there improves. He says the
suspension affects both Iraqi citizens as well as any foreigners --
including military personnel and contractors -- who have been on the
air from Iraq. The request to halt all ham radio activity and the
issuance of licenses in Iraq originated with a letter from the Iraqi
Ministry of Defense to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as part
of a new security plan, Sayah said. He received subsequent
confirmation via the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific
Research to shut down ham radio activity, although he allows for a
possible misunderstanding on the part of government officials as to
the nature and purpose of Amateur Radio.

[DX-NEWS] Pls spread the word

2007-03-05 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Please help spread the word:

Due to a recent flood of bogus subscribers (and I mean almost 100 per
day between the 2 reflectors), Urb has instituted (finally :-) ) a 2
step subscription program

Step 1 requires you to input your e-mail address (the one you'll be
allowed to receive and post) with

Step 2 will be receipt of an e-mail (at the subscribed address) that
requires you to verify that you did indeed subscribe, by clicking on
a URL link

Once that is done, you'll get a welcome message and the rest is
automatic

I realize that this is a tad more than what was needed in the past,
but it was taking more and more time to delete the bogus addresses

If, in a pinch, you need assistance, I am always available to help

Have a good DX day and remember...Just because BS7H is coming on the
air doesn't mean we have to act like goofs AND remember this..if you
hear me trying to work them, keep it down to a dull roar until I make
my contact ;-)

[DX-NEWS] A Happy Holidays to ALL

2006-12-18 Thread Steve-KF2TI
On behalf of Urb, myself and everyone behind the scenes, here at DXR
Central, we'd like to wish you and yours a Happy Healthy Holidays and
New Year.

It's hard to believe that 2006 is almost over, but the calendar
Never lies.

Despite some poor showing (sunspot wise), the bands have been filled
with new and exciting DX to work. Amateur radio was seen as
a literally life saver during several past disasters.

As always, now is the time of year when we should pause and remember
those amateurs and friends who have gone QRT. Unfortunately, those
amateurs coming up through the ranks of DXCC will never get to really
know DX'ers like my friends Howie Wolfe, W2AGW (391) or my close
friend and DX Elmer, Ben Friedland, K2PBP/K2BF. It was people like
these that put the DX fever in me and I am sure others as well. And
although they are gone, I still remember them when I log that "new
one" and do my little DX "I got 'em" dance, because I know they were
the same way.

As you may or may not know, The NJDXA DXR reflector is/will be over
8 years old. (1 dog year)

For those new to the reflector (subscribing over the past year) a
brief history lesson, the original DX reflector was started and
run by Lyndon, VE7TCP and was a bold, exciting concept that
incorporated the Internet and Ham radio. Literally 1000's of
amateurs world-wide subscribed and were kept informed on a daily
basis on the doings of DX everywhere.

Discussion was allowed and in the beginning was encouraged, as a
way to keep the free flow of things DX going. Unfortunately, as is
now the rule, the reflector was taken over by a dozen or so people
who felt that they must challenge every post with opinions that at
times became very nasty.

In late May, 1997, Lyndon pulled the plug, leaving a void. Then
NJDXA President, Ben Friedland (K2BF), Urb Lajeune (W2DEC)
and myself, began a campaign within the club to sponsor the
reflector ourselves.

On August 20, 1997, withy the help of many behind the scene friends,
Urb threw the switch and history was made. Unfortunately, our dear
friend, K2BF, passed away on August 3 and never saw the moment, but
his contribution was what set the format we have today. Offer DX-
NEWS and limit the "chat" so that everyone can benefit.

And we have followed that format, for the most part. Yet, there
still was that "chat" void.

To fill that void DX-CHAT will be started. What is DX-
Chat, you ask?? Well, here ya go..

The (DX-chat) is for the "unmoderated" discussion of things DX.
Try to keep QSL requests to the DX-QSL list. Try to keep the
discussion lively and informative. Remember, this list is world wide
in scope and continual local gripes exclude many who might
participate.

There are a few rules and we ask that they be observed. There will
be several people monitoring the list just to make sure that there
are no problems, technical or otherwise.

No profanity. Any profanity will cause instant and permanent
deletion from the list. We all know the words, there is no need to
prove that to everyone. This includes replying to a post that has
profanity. You use, you lose. There are no exceptions to this rule

No flames. Discussion should and will be conducted on a friendly
basis in keeping with the ARS code of promoting good will. If you
feel that you must flame someone, do so direct. Concurrently, please
refrain from "Take this someplace else" replies.

Do not cross post to or from the DXR reflector. The purpose of this
"discussion" is to move the continually discussion that takes place
on the DXR elsewhere.

A rule of thumb has been..The 1st post is NEWS, everything after that
is CHAT.

There are digest versions or archives available.

Those that remember the VE7TCP list will remember the great success
of the auxiliary VK0IR reflector during the Heard Island DX-pedition.

Just a brief bit of history on what hopefully seems to be an action
packed DX weekend (come on Bernie...leak a little news here ;-0 )

[DX-NEWS] 3 Steves & W1AW

2006-12-18 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Just a last minute reminder that the 3 Steve's ( Steve-KF2TI, Steve-
N2IFA, Steve-KB2ENF and Kurt-W2MW, aka Steve) will be guest op'ing at
the ARRL station, W1AW, Wednesday December 27, from 1700 - 2045 UTC.

This is our 14th annual WAS DX-pedition to Newington and we will be
operating the following bands:

30M CW (Kurt aka Steve) 15, 20 and 40M SSB (Steve, Steve and Steve) A
4th operator Andrew-N2IFB will try his hand on 6M SSB.

Depending on condx, we will hope to try 10M SSB as well as listening
for contacts outside the US. Packet spots will be posted.

If you work any 3 operators, we will send you a beautiful, full color
WAS (Worked All Steve's) certificate (suitable for framing). No QSL
is needed, as we will have copies of the log and send out a
certificate to all those who qualify.
The logs will be posted after January 1st on our website:
http://3stevesandkurt.dynu.com/

This is not an officially sanctioned ARRL event. It is run for fun by
the 3 Steve's and a Kurt Amateur Radio Association - WK3SS (all
rights reserved) and we are responsible for the printing and sending
of the 3 Steve's and a Kurt Worked All Steve's certificate (suitable
for framing)

We would like to thank the ARRL for allowing us to play with their
great toys and putting up with us each year. Hope to work you then.

73, Steve-KF2TI

PS: We hope to have the 3 Steves/KP2 certificates and cards out very
soon. We apologize for the delay

rule change, which will become effective June 15, 2006 at 0001Z.
New text replaces the previously removed DXCC Rule, Section II,
1. Political Entities, Paragraph c). The new text shall read:

c) The Entity contains a permanent population, is
administered by a local
government, and is located at least 800 km from its
parent. To satisfy the
"permanent population" and "administered by a local
government" criteria of
this sub-section, an Entity must be listed on either (a)
the U.S. Department of
State's list of "Dependencies and Areas of Special
Sovereignty" as
having a local "Administrative Center," or (b) the
United Nations list of
 "Non-Self-Governing Territories."

Rule 1c) is intended to recognize entities that are sufficiently
separate from their parent for DXCC purposes but do not qualify
under Rule 1a) or 1b). The new rule will cause a change to Point
1 status for certain entities. This in turn will reduce the
mileage for a first separation for these entities from 800 km to
350 km.

The lists referenced in the text of the rule can be viewed at the
following Web sites: the DOS list of Dependencies and Areas of
Special Sovereignty at http://www.state.gov/s/inr/rls/10543.htm,
and the U.N. list of Non-Self-Governing Territories at
http://www.un.org/depts/dpi/decolonization/trust3.htm.

QSOs with any new entity resulting from this rule change will
count for credit for the new entity only if the QSOs are made on
or after the Start Date for the entity. In no case will QSOs made
prior to the date of this notice be considered for credit for any
new entity created under this rule. Applications for DXCC award
credits resulting from this change will be accepted on or after
October 1, 2006.

[DX-NEWS] 3 Steves in ST Croix

2006-05-22 Thread Steve-KF2TI
We are home 1409 q's later. Kurt is working on the logs, which can
foudn in our website:

http://3stevesandkurt.dynu.com/

I just sent the final logs to Kurt this morning with Sundays last
contacts, so if you aren't ij the log yet or there are contacts
missing, please be patient.

To all our friends in South AMerica, we can not apologize enough for
not working a lot of you

Unfortunately whene we turned the beam to the SouthWest, we looked
straight in a small power line that was giving us literally S9+ noise
level on all but 10M which showed an S8 noise level.

And with the band conditions as they were, we could not copy any
signal under that noise floor. Please know we did try, but just
couldd not copy anyone

We;d like to thank our gracious hosts and friends, Brian and Ann
Keegan KP2HC and KP2YL for allowing us to "take over" their home for
the weekend and for feeding us.

We will post some really nice pictures and movies to the website in
the days to come, so stop by and if time allows, leave a message in
the guestbook

On behalf of the 3 Steves on St Croix

Interesting story posted for DailyDX subscribers regarding the recent KP5
operation. Turns out the operation was cut short due to another ham
complaining to the FWS and to his congressman demanding it be stopped.

I wonder who this might be? Perhaps he will step forward and give his side of
the story and his reasons for doing so? I'd say keeping silent would damn him
in the minds of most hams.

Sorry, unless you are a subscriber Bernie has prohibited forwarding the

[DX-NEWS] Some answers

2006-02-19 Thread Steve-KF2TI
I have received several messages concerning my function here and I
will try to answer in 25000 words or less, in particular order

(1) I am NOT a moderator on this or the CHAT list. A moderator
intercepts all message and then passes them along, or not

When you hit the send button, I see the message just like everyone
else. If it is a topic that really should be on our CHAT reflector,
I will forward it there and let everyone know that discussion should
moce, but I do not delete messages, I do not censor messages, I do
not modify them

The NEWS reflector was set up because a great many people dod not
want dozens of messages filling their inboxes when they had not
interest in discussion, only in "news"worthy items

CHAT was set up several years ago to address the nbeed that some
subscribers wanted to contune discussions on topics and news itemsa
they read

I do not hold sway over who is allowed to subscribe or not.
Unfortunately, the subscribe/unsubcribe mechanism has been broken and
I manually have to do this. Once it is fixed, I will not have to

I do not put people on a rejection list. 99 44/100's of the article
rejection notices are due to the fact that the poster is using an
address other than the one they subscribed with

if I am subscribed [EMAIL PROTECTED], I can not post from
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

If for some reason you get a rejection, let me know and I can look at
the subscriber database..it's usally for the reason mentioned

There is only 1 way to be permanently banned...profanity plain and
simple

The reflector is run by the NJDXA and it was decided that was the 1
and only way to be deleted and banned. It has happened 2 times and
only 2 times

Posting to the wrong reflector gets people upset and gives me ulcers
but that is not grounds for banning. If you do it enough, I might
move you to the "time out" section. You receive posts, you just
can't make them. That has happened 2 times since 1998

Other than that I read everything (and I mean everything) just like
y'all do

Hope this answers some questions as to how I earn the REALLY BIG
bucks here

sorry for being so wordy

carry on

Steve

PS Look for the 3 Steve's (in speedos) to be /KP2

[DX-NEWS] Spam filters

2006-02-14 Thread Steve-KF2TI
First, yes I know that I am cross posting both reflectors, I want to
make sure everyone understands the adminsitrator's position on Spam
filters

Spam filters are a wonderful thing EXCEpt on reflectors.

You voluntarily subscribe to a reflector, then, literally, refuse to
accept posts from said reflectors unless somebody else goes through a
song & dance routine so that you can read their post?? I thin not
Lucy.

I am getting more than 20 requests a day from these spam filters to
"susbcribe" the reflectors so that a person who subscribed to them in
the first place can "read the mail"

I am afraid not. If you use a Spam filter, great. I think they are
the coming thing in spam fighting BUT!!! it's up to YOU to subscribe
the reflector into your whitebook (I believe it's called), not me,
not Urb, not Ron.

Therefore, effective 4 weeks ago, I am unsubscribing anyone using a
Spam filter that insists it is up to me to allow you, the voluntary
subscriber to receive reflkector posts

I am sure there are a few who feel that it isn't there job to make
sure the get the posts they signed up for, but believe me, it is

I have neither the time nor the patience to have to cut and pste and
waste, in some cases, 10 minutes to signh up just one reflector only
to have the message bounce since the reflector can't respond YES
it's true, these bots are looking for answers from another bot..talk
about your I, Robot!!!

Anyway, sorry if your inconveninced into have to do this, but think
about what I have to go through, and for the pittence I get paid

The 3Y is still on...go get 'em

mention my name

[DX-NEWS] 3Y0X logs updated

2006-02-14 Thread Steve-KF2TI

Despite a severe blizzard, and after multiple attempts, the Team has uploaded
another 19,000 Qs! About 100 were garbled in transmission; if you see an
incorrect band or mode, don't panic! This will be straightened out over time.

We believe the online logs are 99% complete at this time. We remind you: DO
NOT contact the pilots if you cannot find your QSO in the online lookup; they
have no other information!

[DX-NEWS] RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!!!!

2006-02-07 Thread Steve-KF2TI
http://www.peterone.com/

8 Feb 2006 0245UTC: "The Eagle Has Landed"! The first helicopter
load landed on Peter I Island at 1830UTC 7 Feb. All but three
members of the Team are ashore; the last helicopter trip for the day
was at 0230UTC. 80% of the gear has been transferred; the rest (and
the remaining three Team members) will be flown ashore in the morning
(local). All the shelters are up except OP Shelter A.
We will go on the air with two stations at around 0400UTC 8 Feb. I.

Two SteppIR antennas are up along with a 40M vertical. This is a
beautiful place but visibility is presently poor. We've seen the
tops of volcanoes but only for a brief period. The camp is located a
bit north of the 1994 location, closer to the sea. Snow is slushy
and you sink in about 6" with every step; makes moving around tiring.
Temp is 30°, wind 30 knots and visibility is low. We expect to have
8-9 stations on the air in the next 24 hours. Let the fun begin!

Editors Note: IF, like your editor, you had worked the 94 3y0
operation, stand by for a few days or so and let those that need a
NEW ONE get it

After that, no holds bared

Here's hoping to a successful, SAFE Dxpedition

3 Feb 2006
Beginning yesterday afternoon we encountered long swells that gently raise and
then lower the boat.. It was a fairly comfortable ride. Today the seas have
changed a bit and are averaging twelve feet. The ride is a little more
uncomfortable, but not a problem for most of the team. We are experiencing
winds speed of 33 knots with gusts higher.direction is from the SSW.
Outside air temperature is 36 deg F. Current position is 65 deg 2 min S. Lat
and 65 deg, 44 mins West at 1900Z on Feb 3rd.
We have almost 2,000 QSOs on two radios using an OCF Windom antenna and a
4-BTV. Callsign is XR9A/MM. The Team is in good spirits, only two are having
trouble with sea sickness. Training is continuing on the use of the Icom 756
Pro III’s and Alpha 99 amps and with Writelog. Last night after dinner we
viewed a video and discussed once again how to erect the shelters. Most of the
team has hands-on experience with shelter erection from previous training, but
six have not. Tomorrow will be spent moving our equipment from the container
on the lower deck to the main deck and staging for helicopter airlift!
Current ETA at Peter I is midnight, Sunday, Feb 5th. This means the earliest
we could begin setting up the camp would be the following morning on Monday…..
weather permitting!
73’s to all!

Hi all,

Yes, we canceled January 20 due to lack of interest. We hereby authorize
everyone to go to sleep tonight and not wake up until the 21st! Actually, as
I explain in the "Oops" column in the February issue (due to arrive on Jan.
20th!), it's all my mother's fault. January 20th is her birthday and she
decided she'd like to skip having one this year, so we obliged! The really
amazing thing, though, is that absolutely nobody noticed it until sometime in
November. By the way, the month is correct in the 2006-2007 calendar, so if
you don't have one yet, it's a good reason to call (tomorrow, of course) and
order one!

Vy 73 and enjoy your day off,
Rich W2VU

[DX-NEWS] (Fwd) CQ Cancels Jan 20, 2006

2006-01-18 Thread Steve-KF2TI

--- Forwarded message follows ---
Organization: Amateur Radio Station K7ACZ
To: cq-contest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,

For the last year I have been using my 15 Month 2005/2006 CQ Magazine
Calendar for everyday scheduling as well as keeping an eye on when
contest weekends are coming up. I have ordered the 2006/2007 calendar
but am still using the 2005/2006 version until the new one arrives. The
2005/2006 calendar goes up to March 2006.

My doctor gave me an appointment for Jan 20 and so I wanted to mark it
on my calendar as to not forget it. But there is NO Jan 20th. The
calendar goes from Thursday, Jan 19th to Friday, Jan 21, 2006. Every
date after that is one day off.

Is Friday the 20th an unlucky day in some cultures? Friday the 13th is
considered unlucky in some cultures but the CQ Calendar does have a
Friday the 13th in Jan 2006.

Good thing it isn't a contest weekend. For those of us where a 48 hour
weekend contest starts on a Friday afternoon or evening we would have
lost several hours of operation.

[DX-NEWS] 3 Steve's & W1AW

2005-12-26 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Just a last minute reminder that the 3 Steve's ( Steve-KF2TI, Steve-
N2IFA, Steve-KB2ENF and Kurt-W2MW, aka Steve) will be guest op'ing at
the ARRL station, W1AW, Wednesday December 28, from 1700 - 2045 UTC.

This is our 9th annual WAS DX-pedition to Newington and we will be
operating the following bands:

30M CW (Kurt aka Steve)
15, 20 and 40M SSB (Steve, Steve and Steve)

A 4th operator Andrew-N2IFB will try his hand on 6M SSB.

This is not an officially sanctioned ARRL event. It is run for fun
by the 3 Steve's and a Kurt Amateur Radio Association (all rights
reserved) and we are responsible for the printing and sending of the
3 Steve's and a Kurt Worked All Steve's certificate (suitable for
framing)

We would like to thank the ARRL for allowing us to play with their
great toys and putting up with us each year.

Hope to work you then.

73,

Steve-KF2TI

Also, a digest version of DX-NEWS is available. Rather than get an

Those working K3LP/KP5 and N3KS/KP5 please QSL to W3ADC. Don't
forget
the new US postage rates that will take effect on January 8, 2006.
Your return SASE (Self addressed stamped envelope) should have 39
cents postage (new US to US rate), 84 cents (DX) or 63 cents (to VE
or
XE). QSL cards for this operation will probably not go out until
sometime after the new postage rates. (tnx W3JJ for reminder) By
the
way as of this posting K3LP/KP5 is on 24945 and N3KS/KP5 is on 14022,
both listening up!

December 16th 2130Z update

K3LP/KP5 has been operating on 15 SSB (21295) since about 1545Z and
will be there until the band dies tonight. He will then do 40 meters
SSB all night and will look for Europe during their sunrise.
N3KS/KP5
has been on 14190 since about 1500Z and will sometime tonight go to
80
meters or possible 30 meters. He is waiting for someone from their
boat crew to deliver the gas and TS50 for CW. They are still trying
to work as many unique QSOs as possible to give as many as possible
their first QSO. Also Dave said they now think they can stay until
early Tuesday. Also they will be looking for VK/ZL/JA on 15 SSB
around 2200-2330Z. The guys are a little tired but hanging in there.

Temperatures today in the tents were about 120 degrees F. Yesterday
they moved over 1000 pounds of equipment some 300 yards. Dave does
not think they will get the 160 antenna up today.

[DX-NEWS] A Happy holidays from us to you

2005-12-15 Thread Steve-KF2TI
On behalf of Urb, myself and everyone behind the scenes, here at DXR
Central, we'd like to wish you and yours a Happy Healthy Holidays and
New Year.

It's hard to believe that 2004 is almost over, but the calendar
nevers lies.

Despite some poor showing (sunspot wise), the bands have bee filled
with new and exciting DX to work. Amatuer radio was seen as
aliterally life saver during several past disasters and I made Honor
Roll.

As always, now is the time of year when we should pause and remember
those amatuers and friends who have gone QRT. Unfortuantely, those
amatuers coming up through the ranks of DXCC will never get to really
know DX'ers like my friends Howie Wolfe, W2AGW (391) or my close
friend and DX Elmer, Ben Friedland, K2PBP/K2BF. It was people like
these that put the DX fever in me and I am sure others as well. And
although they are gone, I still remember them when I log that "new
one" and do my little DX "I got 'em" dance, because I know they were
the same way.

As you may or may not know, The NJDXA DXR reflector is/will be over
7 years old.

Those that remember the VE7TCP list will remember the great success
of the auxillary VK0IR reflector during the Heard Island DX-pedition.

Just a brief bit of history on what hopefully seems to be an action
packed DX weekend (come on Bernie...leak a little news here ;-0 )

[DX-NEWS] message from K7C

2005-10-02 Thread Steve-KF2TI

K7C Bulletin - Oct 1st

This is a short information bulletin to our DXer friends around the
world. We want you to know that we have heard your concerns
regarding
QSOs with DXers in Europe and other places on the other side of the
polar path. We've all been in your situation, so we have empathy for
you.

Let's start with a technical consideration of which you should be
aware. As you already know, we are using vertically-polarized
antennas very, very close to salt water and with large radial fields.

This makes our signal launch angle very, very low - quite a bit lower
than most horizontally-polarized antennas on dry land. As a result,
the K7C signal has been reported to be very loud on the receiving
end.
This doesn't mean, however, that you are just as loud here. All it
takes is a couple of extra "hops" from a higher launch angle and your
signal will change from an easy-to-work S5 to being undetectable.
The
K7C team has observed a number of occasions when it is obvious that
you can hear K7C easily, but on our end the pileup is only an
unworkable S-1 grumble. This is most pronounced at the beginning and
end of an opening so you may be hearing us long before or after we
can
hear you. Marginal openings on the paths to Europe, the Middle East
and Northern Africa may be entirely "one-way" - incredibly
frustrating
for you to have K7C be as clear as bell, but not hearing the most
important DXer of all - you.

While we can't change propagation and certainly don't want to raise
our signal take-off angles, we can and will make sure that DXers far
away from Kure know that we are making every reasonable effort to
work
them. To that end, we will be "listening for EU only" whenever an
opening - even a low-probability, marginal one - is a possibility. We
want to be clear - we have not discounted EU openings before now.
Everyone on the K7C team has considered EU to be the top priority
since the onset of operations last week. But we just haven't been
hearing workable signals from EU except during the prime openings.
Nevertheless, it is important that the DX community has confidence
that we are making every effort to make EU QSOs. In order to spend
more time focusing on EU, we will have to ask our US and JA friends
to
stand-by and grit their teeth during some periods when it would be
easy to work K7C. We hope they'll understand that the special extra
effort for the difficult paths is the same as made by expeditions to
D6, FT5X, and 3B9 in the past.

How can the DXer that needs a QSO with Kure help themselves to make
the contact without rushing to spend the college fund on an
amplifier?
Fortunately, the steps are easy to take...

1) Listen. One well-timed, well-placed call is better than an hour
of
random calling. If you are transmitting, you are not finding out
where or when we are listening. Resist the urge to press the mike
switch or send your call - listen for the right frequency at the
right
time, instead.

2) Follow the Golden Rule. In a very weak pileup, bad pileup manners
can close down an opening just as easily as low solar flux. It takes
very little rude behavior to drop the QSO rate from more than one per
minute to nothing. Take a deep breath and resist the urge to call
over someone else.

3) Follow instructions. If the K7C op says 200 to 205, you probably
won't get in the log at 207 or 198. Call ONLY when called or when
the
requested call is VERY CLOSE to yours. If the K7C op says, "Radio
Charlie", then N0AX should be quiet. When we are working "SA and OC
only", then NA should go get a drink, visit the head, or kick the
dog.

4) Spread out according to the instructions. If K7C says "Up 2" and
everybody is exactly 2.0 kHz up, it makes pulling out calls a
very
tough job. Use timing to set your signal apart from others. Send
your full call and use standard phonetics every single time.

5) If you have a choice, use your lowest angle antenna, not
necessarily the one with the highest gain. The key is the launch or
take-off angle of your signal.

Finally, please have patience and a little empathy for the team. A
DXpedition to a remote location like Kure is hard, uncomfortable work
although the rewards of making DXers happy is ample compensation.
We're out here for you, even though sweat is puddling in our chairs
or
we are running low on sleep or maybe we were busy fulfilling our time
commitments to the island administrator - part of the price of
admission to Kure. These are not excuses, just the reality of
DXpeditioning that we all accepted when we signed up. Imagine
though,
having a ghost crab nibbling on your toes just as you're trying to
pull out that 50-watt-and-attic-dipole signal! It's not like home.

Keep the faith, brothers and sisters. We're pulling for you just as
hard as we can - don't give up!

[DX-NEWS] K7C Update

2005-09-24 Thread Steve-KF2TI
The North Jersey DX Association is a proud sponsor of the K7C
Dxpedition

Hello DXers:

Here are late reports on the KURE DXpedition as of about 4 hours ago.

At this time no spots have been reported. They could come up at any
time now.
*
K7C reports that unloading of all the equipment to Kure Atoll has
taken longer than expected due to heavy seas. The ship is anchored
about 5 miles out from the lagoon. With the high seas, their
transport boats cannot go fast, taking about an hour each way plus
loading and unloading. They have 15 to 20 loads total so one can
well imagine their task. DXA has been implemented in real time and
the wireless links between the logging computers and DXA is being
completed.

K7C also reports that they intend to go QRV sometime around 0700z (it
is 0400z as of this posting) in about 3 hours. They have not
reported which band, but no doubt 20 meters to start. They will be
operating a limited station while they complete their other tasks.
But one can well imagine their enthusiasm to get on the air asap.
Most likely Europe will get the first crack at a K7C contact.
Steven Hammer, K6SGH
*

- it has taken longer to unload the Machias than anticipated. It's
anchored 5 miles out and each round trip with gear takes 1 hour
- it is very hot, work is slower than normal and everyone is tired
- the operating tents are up
- all the coax is laid out
- the operation is somewhat behind schedule, but making good progress
- they hope to finish everything today
- they maybe be QRV tomorrow -- but no promises at this time

And the best news -- the DXA application via the satellite link is up
and running
73 de Paul, VE7AVV

FROM THE WEB SITE: OPERATING FREQUENCIES

The Expedition will select a set of primary operating frequencies,
selected to avoid conflict with other possible operations, and to be
on or near the standard frequencies used by major DXpeditions. The
following is indicative of these frequencies, but is only
provisional.
THIS LIST IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

We will make every effort to avoid interfering with emergency
communications related to the hurricane disaster on the gulf coast.
Please work with us to adapt to the location conditions, and advise
us if we are in conflict with emergency service communications.

[DX-NEWS] K7C Update

2005-09-15 Thread Steve-KF2TI
The North Jersey DX Association is a proud sponsor of the K7C
Dxpedition

Additional information and access to the logs in real-time, go to:

http://www.cordell.org/htdocs/KURE/index.html

And now for something completely different..

THE LATEST UPDATE ON THE KURE ATOLL DXPEDITION.

After a lot of boat loading, box packing, rope tying, and nautical
things the words for which escape me at the moment, the K7C
expedition is ready to sail on the ebb tide this afternoon! The
weather has been a bit stormy in the evenings, but through the day it
is the blissful KH6 blue sky and sun you might imagine. We
anticipate a following sea on our 1300-mile cruise out past the
pinnacles, seamounts, and islands of the Hawaiian chain.

We would like to extend our special thanks to Kimo KH6U and Pat NH7UY
as our exceptional local hosts and organizers. Also, we would like
to thank the numerous Honolulu hams that have lent a hand in hosting,
hauling, and hosanna-ing the team. Without these folks in the
background, the expedition would be far more difficult, costly, and
risky. Thanks to all of you and also for sending us off in such fine
style at dinner last night.

The team would also like to extend condolences to the family of Hugh
Cassidy WA6AUD. Cass' contributions to DXing are legendary and
inspirational to many of us over the years. His grand "DX Is!",
while possibly not original, was so strongly communicated and
resonates so deeply within the DX community in capturing the essence
of why we pursue these dreams and goals.

For information about the team's whereabouts and schedule, stay tuned
to the K7C Web site's DXA application in the "Messages" section. We
will also attempt to be QRV from the Machias, most likely on 20-
meters, as K7C/MM. It will be fun to touch base with you from the
Pacific as we wend our way slowly towards the setting sun.

>From all of us on the K7C team - Aloha and Mahalo (thanks) for your
>support and encouragement. See you in the pileups!

[DX-NEWS] Kure Dxpedition Bulletin #4

2005-09-08 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Kure-Osity #4
7 September 2005

by H. Ward Silver, NØAX ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
K7C Team Member

K7C Web site: http://www.cordell.org/htdocs/KURE/

Working and QSLing the Expedition

Team members are converging on Honolulu to complete preparations and
sail for Kure on the 15th of September. Captain Bill Austin is
preparing the Machias to be our home away from home for the next
month and local kahunas Kimo KH7U and Pat NH6UY are doing yeoman
service in handling gear and shipping chores. For example, to prevent
importation of invasive species to Kure, new clothing is required and
all supplies will be deep frozen before shipping! To do my part, I've
purchased the world's ugliest tennis shoes just for the island and
you'll no doubt seen my colorful apparel in several photos.

Now, the important part - working the Expedition. For those DXers
located around the Pacific Rim, we ask your forbearance and patience
as we take advantage of any openings to the other side of the world.
Kure is very rare in Europe and the propagation path takes us
directly over the North Pole and through the auroral zone. If the
propagation gods smile upon us, we will be able to put many EU call
signs in the log, but only if our friends closer to Kure give them a
chance. The same goes for the various regions of North America - be
disciplined and stand by when requested.

While you are listening for Kure, also take some time to listen to
the NCDXF beacon system's outpost in Honolulu, KH6WO. (The system is
described at www.ncdxf.org/beacons.html) If you can hear that beacon,
you can probably hear us and maybe we can hear you. We will be
particularly interested in reports from the US, SA, and JA of 10- and
12-meter beacon reception. From EU, reception reports on 17-meters
and up will be of interest. You can contribute those reports through
our relay stations listed on the Web site and in the previous Kure-
Osity Bulletin.

Our first goal will be to give as many different DXers a contact with
the island and that may mean focusing on the one or two most reliable
bands
for the first few days. Later in the expedition, we'll try to explore
openings on more marginal bands. Pay close attention to the DXA Web
site and to the K7C operators instructions and bulletins. Because we
are at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, we won't have the luxury of
big openings on any band we choose. Be alert and don't depend on the
spotting networks to lead you to us - keep that Big Knob turning!

Speaking of DXA, the K7C expedition will aim for the highest
standards of logging accuracy, even under trying conditions of
personal or ionospheric circumstance, but don't presume that if the
call sign is "close" you'll get a card. Use the band-mode status
display on the DXA Web site (www.cordell.org/DXA) to confirm that
your call is in the log. If it is, don't make "insurance QSOs",
depriving some other DXer of their contact. Make sure that your
clock and calendar are set properly to avoid time and date errors on
your QSL. The mark of a good DXer is accurate logging and
QSLing - after all, are we radio operators or computer screen
watchers?

If possible, I will file one more bulletin before the Machias shoves
off from the pier and we begin our adventure. All is well, and we
hope to be QRV on schedule from the oldest and furthest of the
Hawaiian Islands, setting your imaginations and S-meter needles
jumping!

KA2HTV, Dave, is back in New York after a 13 hour flight. He told me
that the radio equipment was "not confiscated" but rather "the
government inspected" his "equipment for a week". Also it was not
the Spanish government representative who was not authorized to give
permission but rather a North Korean official. Dave had been working
closely with a Spanish man, who is a representative of the DPRK.

I did talk to Dave, who is very optimistic about the future, for a
few minutes. I asked him to send us a report once he gets time and
caught up on things.

[DX-NEWS] P5/KA2HTV

2005-08-24 Thread Steve-KF2TI
>From 8/24 edition of The Daily DX,

KA2HTV, Dave, made it back to Beijing, China after spending two weeks
in North Korea. Unfortunately Dave was unable to operate. His
equipment was confiscated by government officials, meanwhile Dave was
waiting for the equipments to be released. After the other foreign
delegates left, this was the time Dave was supposed to put in more
time, he was summoned to meet with NPRK authorities. Apparently the
official, a Spanish man, who told Dave that he would be "given
permission" was not authorized to do so. Dave was then told by the
ministry of communications they would take his license and "look into
getting" him permission. Obviously this was a shock to Dave who is
needless to say very disappointed. A lot of work, time and expense
have been put into this project. However Dave, says "I saw signs of
hope for the future." Much of the equipment was kept by the
officials who accepted the donation and gave a thank you letter.
Dave was able to give a talk to the P5 officials about Amateur Radio.
Dave was expected back in New York late Tuesday, August 23rd.

[DX-NEWS] once again for the last time

2005-08-13 Thread Steve-KF2TI
With great sorrow, I am not pleased to report that once again, some
AOL subcriber has complained that the reflector is spamming his mail
box and once again, Urb is getting the warning notices and once
again, for the last time, I am/have unsubscribed all AOL subscribers
from the DXR. I have moved them to a distributionj list I have set
up on my earthlink account so that you/they will at least get a
digest version of the daily "traffic"

Urb is very concerned that this latest go-around will affect his
business and with that in mind I did what I had to quickly and
without notice

Since doing this yesterday, the warnings have ceased, so at least we
havce narrowed down the "suspects" to 7 individuals (no I am not
pointing fingers..yet)

I/we will continue this policy indefinitely, or intil we can find a
way of dealing with this problem. Why someone who voluntarily
subscribes to a mailing list then complains when they get mail is
beyond me. Obviously a person with no life other than to make others
as miserable as he/she.

Anyway, I apologize for any inconvenience. We try to run this as best
we can with the limited resources available. We prefer not to go to
the Yahoo-type boards because then we lose control of how things are
done.

As it was

so let it be written, so let it be done

[DX-NEWS] p5 update

2005-08-09 Thread Steve-KF2TI
>From August 9 issue of the Daily DX (thanks Bernie)

Yesterday KA2HTV, Dave, updated your DX editor on his trip to DPRK
from Beijing. He received his North Korean visa and air Koryo
tickets. He will be leaving this morning for Pyongyang. "I received
word that I will get good cooperation on this effort", says David.
He also wants to emphasis that the "bulk of the operating will be
from
the (August) 20-23" time frame. Dave went on by saying not to "worry
if it takes a few days to get on the air". Just to remind everyone
the absolute earliest he could show up would be today around 2000Z.
Any activity will most likely be on 17, 20 or 40 meters on SSB. If
an official press release comes out we will send it to all
subscribers.
You may also want to keep an eye on http://www.amsatnet.com/p5a.html.

Looking at the expected solar conditions between now and the end of
Dave's trip to Pyongyang are not very hopeful. The Solar Flux is
expected to drop below 100 today and continue down to 70 and not
raising above 100 until after Dave has left P5. Here on the east
coast of the US that probably means we will only have a shot on 20
meters, especially during the 2000-2200Z time frame. The lower the K
index the better the opportunity from this part of the globe.
Europeans, especially on the western half of the continent should
have a significant advantage during that 20-22Z time period.

[DX-NEWS] Panama on the air

2005-08-08 Thread Steve-KF2TI
WN6K and W6NOW will be going to Panama. We leave San Diego August
31st and will arrive there the same day but in the evening. After
some rest we should be heading up the coast about an hour from Panama
Thursday, Sept. 1st. We will be staying at a place on the Pacific
Ocean side on the beach. Our intention is to primarily set up a
station there to work the All Asian SSB test that weekend. If things
get setup quickly however, we should have G5RVs and other wires up
well before the contest period. After the AA test, we will be doing
some visiting with locals but should have some time to check out 160-
10 propagation allowing.

W6NOW is from Panama but is a new US Ham so his experience is
limited. This is my first time operating out of the US so we are
testing the waters but I have a number of years experience at low
power contesting.

So simply put HPWN6K & W6NOW will be operating while on vacation
as HP1/WN6K from Sept. 1 thru Sept. 13. Will try 10-160 with
emphasis on WARC CW bands. Watch the clusters.

73,

WN6K - Paul

[DX-NEWS] (Fwd) Enroute to P5

2005-08-04 Thread Steve-KF2TI

Word from Dave KA2HTV's neighbor is that he left for China this
morning at 5:00 AM where he will spend 5 days before taking the next
leg to North Korea.

Once Dave enters North Korea he will no longer have internet or
cellphone useage. He will be able to operate from 1 hour before
sunset until 1 hour after sunrise. Remember that the last 3 days of
the trip are extra days that Dave will use for as much operating as
possible.

More information will be posted as it arrives.

[DX-NEWS] P5/KA2HTV

2005-08-02 Thread Steve-KF2TI
>From the Lone Star DX Assocation:

For immediate release
August 2, 2005

The Lone Star DX Association in conjunction with Dr. David Borenstein

announces the following:

Dr. David Borenstein, KA2HTV, will be traveling to Pyongyang,
Democratic People's Republic of Korea, "North Korea" during the month
of August. He has received written permission from the "North Korean"
government to operate as P5/KA2HTV during his stay. While radio
operating is not the primary reason for his visit, Dr. Borenstein
hopes to be able to operate 1-2 hours a day and will stay
an additional three days devoted entirely to radio operation. For
security reasons, he will only operate SSB and primarily 20 meters.
Dr. Borenstein will arrive on August 9th and depart on the 23rd. QSL
requests should be sent to KK5DO. Operation from P5 is at the
pleasure of the host country so the DX community should keep their
collective fingers crossed that all goes well and they do not change
their minds.

The ARRL has reviewed the Dr. Borenstein's plan and if and when
P5/KA2HTV occurs, it will likely count.

Dr. Borenstein notes that while his operating time will be limited,
the success of this operation will lead to further P5 operations in
the near future. Much of the equipment being taken will remain there,
pre-positioned for subsequent operations.

The Lone Star DX Association (LSDXA) is the sponsoring DX
organization for this operation.

[DX-NEWS] CY9SS QRT

2005-07-06 Thread Steve-KF2TI
courtesy of Bernie and the Daily DX

VY2RU, Ken, tells us the CY9SS DXpedition on St. Paul Island will be
going QRT today.
Bernie, W3UR

Bernie, I received a call from Robby on St.Paul Isl. this morning at
09:00Z Wednesday, July 6 (6AM Local) and he informs me that CY9SS
will be QRT this morning. Due to South East winds developing this
evening and remaining over the next few days the boat Captain feels,
due to the safety of all involved, that the group leave the Island
later today. The HF equipment and antennas will be dismantled first
with the 6M equipment being the last to be taken down along with the
tents. The boat will arrive around 19:00Z and it will take about 3
hours to ferry the equipment to the boat. Hopefully everything can
be taken today and a return trip tomorrow will not be necessary. The
guys have a very long and tiring day ahead and will not be unloaded
and secured at Bay St. Lawrence until around 05:00Z (2AM Local) on
July 7th! Again the Mother Nature and the WX seems to be dictating
to this DX-Pedition at the end as she did at the beginning!!

I doubt if I will hear from the CY9SS Group until they arrive back on
Prince Edward Island on Friday, July 8 because the Cell phone will be
out of service when the generator is shut down.

[DX-NEWS] Pete Halpin, PH1PH/G7ECN, SK

2005-06-22 Thread Steve-KF2TI
Pete Halpin, PH1PH/G7ECN, SK (Jun 22, 2005) -- Pete Halpin,
PH1PH/G7ECN, of Hengelo, the Netherlands, died June 8 after battling
cancer. The co-developer with Simon Brown, HB9DRV, of the freeware
Ham Radio Deluxe transceiver-control package, Halpin was considered
its support and services guru. "Pete was instrumental in the
development of what must be the premier freeware operating, logging,
PSK-interface application available to our hobby," said Jim Newton,
K9YGW/M0YGW. "He and Simon spent untold hours bringing this resource
to the community." Licensed in 1982, Halpin was a retired aircraft
technician who, in Brown's words, "devoted copious free time to this
project. He will be missed by everyone involved with Ham Radio
Deluxe." The Radio Society of Great Britain recognized Brown and
Halpin last year for their significant contribution to the
development of Amateur Radio technology (PHOTO: Halpin, right,
accepts his award from the RSGB's Bob Whelan, G3PJT). Halpin also has
received awards from the QRP Amateur Radio Club International, one
for his low-power successes on 6 meters.

VY2RU, Ken McCormick, updates The Daily DX on the CY9SS operation.
Only 2 ops Robby VY2SS and Doug VE1PZ are on the island at present
therefore there will be "limited" operations today on HF and most
likely just CW when they are on the air.  Check the Clusters for
freqs.   Plans for 80M CW this evening.   The 6M beacon is on 50.103
beaming Europe at this time.   Three ops, Chip W1AIM, Dave VA2DV and
Steve VE2TKH left Sunday evening due to pending bad WX today Monday
and Doug VE1PZ went out at that time.  Three more ops, Dale AA5XE,
Charlie N1RR and Bill, VY2LI are enroute today and should be on the
Island Tuesday WX permitting.  There is no truth in the rumor that
they had to leave the Island due to a major storm.  As you are aware
Krassy, K1LZ and David KY1V had left on Friday due to Krassy's
accident.   On-Line-Logs are not a priority and will not be
operational until later this week if at all.  As Robby remarked,
survival has been the key word during the first week with the extreme
weather conditions and the accident Krassy, K1LZ had on Friday.   We
now have the Satellite phone and two analog cell phones working to
St.
Paul so we have solid communications with the group when required.
