[Dx-packages] [Bug 1158689] Re: bringing up dash causes screen corruption on nouveau
Amit Kucheria, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please just make a comment to this. Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example: kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc2 This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding. ** Description changed: Hitting the "Windows" key to bring up the dash corrupts the screen from where everything goes downhill. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1256590] Re: J. Random User Showing In Unity Power Menu Indicator
I also notice this after starting and stopping Remmina Remote Desktop Client for the first time since upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to ido in Ubuntu. Matching subscriptions: dx-packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1256590 Title: J. Random User Showing In Unity Power Menu Indicator Status in “ido” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Yesterday I encountered an issue that was very concerning, at least until I investigated a bit more, and found that it may only be due to debug/test code that's still be present in released software. The search I made brought me here. Please redirect me if I'm in the wrong place. "J. Random User" appeared in the Ubuntu 13.10 (x86_64) Unity Power indicator list, below 'Lock' and above '{my user name}'. This was only noticed as I was about to lock the screen, which I do a number of times per day, however, this time "J. Random User" was visible. There was no User Account for that entry in System Settings > User Accounts. There was no one else logged onto the machine except my own username (checked by '$ w'). There seemed to be no rogue processes running (checked in log and current processes). From a security point of view, it was very concerning. But after my searches on the matter, I belive the machine not to be compromised, but tickled by 'developer test code'. Restarting the computer removed the issue. It could be coincidence, but the only bit of new software I tried (for the first time ever) was the "Remmina Remote Desktop Client" to see if was interested to remotely connect to another computer on the home network. After restarting my computer and running that software again, it did not cause a "J. Random User" to appear in the indicator, so it could be a red-herring. It could also be related to this? : https://code.launchpad.net/~larsu/ido/custom-menu-items/+merge/165498 Hope you know something about it, or can redirect this bug report elsewhere. Thanks. It's a direct port of the same changes. == TESTS == The packages (and Qt5 with the patch) builds and works, as tested on the ppa:sil2100/qt PPA by some users. == WHY? == Since the release of the Ubuntu SDK, our distro started directly depending on Qt5. In the current form, Qt5 has no global menu support - all Qt5 compiled applications have menus in windows. HUD support for those applications is also non-existent. We think this is unacceptable, especially that we're advertising development using our Ubuntu SDK (Qt5). Note that this also blocks fix for bug 1126210 (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtbase-opensource- src/+bug/1126210/comments/9). As mentioned in the comments, this is a distro-only fix for now, as upstream support does require more time to be done (see bug LP: #1157213). This distro patch would be essentially removed and replaced by the QPA support upstream. So the information displayed is contraddictory. The former is wrong, and the latter is right. The battery is actually almost full. If I click on the icon when charging (connected), it says "0:13 to charge". If I click on it when disconnected, it says "3:45 left". These are consistent with each other, and with the fact that the battery actually _is_ almost full. The battery is almost new and it takes pretty long to discharge, so it can't be almost full and almost empty at the same time, nor is the measured value unreliable. The fact that the textual information is correct confirms this. It's a bug in the way the information is displayed graphically. Actually, while I was writing, the charging completed, the battery is now full. If I click on the icon, it says "Battery (100%)". However, the icon still shows the almost empty battery. However, this cannot come at the price of not knowing the *percentage* of charge. Given its intrinsic unreliability, the time information is almost useless in most cases. The percentage MUST be shown. Three behaviors would be acceptable: - only show percentage - show both percentage and time - let me choose But showing only time is definitely wrong. Additionally, to add more confusion and frustration, the indicator exhibits the following twisted behavior: When you click on the icon: - Connected and charging => "x:xx to charge" - Connected and fully charged => sometimes "100%", sometimes "charged" - Disconnected => "y:yy left" When you have already clicked on it and the submenu is already visible, and you connect or disconnect the charger, then value is updated in the following way, and then after a few seconds it changes to the behavior described above: - Just connected and fully charged => "charged" (then it may change to "100%", or not) - Just connected and charging => "nn%" (then it changes to "x:xx to charge") - Just disconnected => "nn%" (then it changes to "y:yy left") When the "show time in Menu Bar" option is checked, the behavior is the same as described above (including the changes when connecting/disconnecting) with the slight difference that instead of "charged" nothing is shown. Actually I suspect the difference between "100%" and "charged" above is not random but maybe 100% means "more than 99.5% but still detectably less than 100%", while "charged" means "not distinguishable from 100% as far as the sensor can tell". If that is the case, this distinction is not significant to the user and this way of conveying it is confusing. It would be more fair to either show "99%" whenever the battery is detectably non-full (even if it is greater than 99.5%) or to always show either "100%" or "charged" (but always the same) when the amount of charge rounds up to 100%. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1257054] [NEW] accounts-daemon causes lightdm to hang when there's lots of entries in /etc/passwd
Public bug reported: Hello, I run ubuntu in an enterprise environment, and it requires that we have 2800+ users in /etc/passwd. The problem that I'm seeing, is that the login window hangs for 3-5 minutes after entering a username into the 'username' field. While it's hung, you can see that the accounts-daemon seems to be looping through users in /etc/passwd (you see a new accounts-daemon process spawn as each user and run for a small amount of time). In previous versions of ubuntu, I've been able to work around this by enabling the manual login field (i.e. the username/password field instead of a dropdown with users). However, in 13.10, this hang occurs even with the manual username/password field, and the 3-5 minute delay between entering the username, and being able to type your password is making things unusable. Is there a way I can prevent the accounts daemon from doing this? Since our home folders are on network file servers, I'm worried about the load that this might be causing there (I'm seeing some indication that the accounts-daemon is going to look through each home folder for a ~/.profile, or something similar) Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide: Ubuntu Release: 13.10 (linux 3.11.0-12-generic) Lightdm Version 1.8.2-0ubuntu1 accountsservice Version 0.6.34-0ubuntu6 ** Affects: accountsservice (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to accountsservice in Ubuntu. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1256701] Re: Screen artifacts in the dash
This has been an issue for a while. Somewhere there is a massive Unity bug that includes this and many other graphical "annoyances" that was created early in the 13.10 development cycle, which I cannot for the life of me find right now. I'll keep digging around, but if anyone can remember what became of it that would be most helpful. If it has vanished, it might be nice to once again pull any persistent small graphical issues that were either missed in 13.10, or that have cropped up since. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1256585] [NEW] adduser does not update System Settings "Accounts" or the session login screen
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I added some new users to my freshly installed Ubuntu 12.04 system using adduser in a Terminal window -- something I've done successfully with 3 previous Ubuntu releases. Now everything is OK at the filesystem level (/etc/passwd, /home/*, etc.), but neither the System Settings "Accounts" GUI nor the initial login screen shows any of the new users. I did edit /etc/adduser.conf to limit the range of system user and group IDs to 0-199 rather than 0-999, because I'm going to be copying a /home hierarchy from an earlier release that used those values and all the user IDs I added are in the range 200-999, but unless the 0-999 range is hardwired into LightDM or AccountsService or some other new piece of system software, this shouldn't cause the users to be invisible. I've spent hours on this problem with no success. The system is unusable until I solve it, because none of the real users on the system can log in through the initial login screen, and there is no other way to create a session for a different user (sudo -l only affects the terminal window, not the desktop etc.). To reproduce the problem: * Start with a freshly installed 12.04 system, creating "admin1" as the initial user. * Download and install all post-release patches. * Edit /etc/adduser.conf to change the system UID and GID boundary from 1000 to 200, and to set usergroups to "no". * Open a Terminal window, and execute (for example) adduser --uid 602 ghost * Open the System Settings and select Accounts. The newly added user "ghost" will not appear. * Log out of the session. I changed the "Target" to accountsservice since I think that's the most likely location of the bug. ** Package changed: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) => accountsservice (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to accountsservice in Ubuntu. Matching subscriptions: dx-packages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1256585 Title: adduser does not update System Settings "Accounts" or the session login screen Status in “accountsservice” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I added some new users to my freshly installed Ubuntu 12.04 system using adduser in a Terminal window -- something I've done successfully with 3 previous Ubuntu releases. When the initial login screen appears, it will not offer "ghost" as a login name. [Dx-packages] [Bug 1247401] Re: Date/Time missing from indicators and welcome screen
Removing the duplicate as it seems the original issue (bug 1239710) is fixed. Using this bug to track new occurrences in trusty. I just got this, using r34 (trusty). [11:02:34] Ursinha, check is the service is running and maybe the corresponding upstart log [11:05:19] seb128, indicator-datetime-service isn't running [11:06:19] Ursinha, is there anything useful in the upstart log? [11:07:19] seb128, the only mention I could find in upstart logs is in dbus.log, the last message says: Failed to activate service 'com.canonical.indicator.datetime': timed out [11:07:53] Ursinha, is that current trusty? the indicators should be managed by upstart with the changes ted did [11:08:14] e.g they should have their own log [11:08:18] seb128, yes, trusty, r34 [11:09:45] Ursinha, well, in any case it seems like the service had an issue and timeouted, not a lot you can get now, if it happens again it would be useful to get a gdb stacktrace before the timeout ** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1239710 indicator-datetime or -session missing ~10% of the time -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to indicator-datetime in Ubuntu. Although the date in the text field is correct, the graphic calendar still shows the date at which you either originally logged in, or clicked the calendar before. 4) Hide it, and show it once more. The calendar now shows the correct date. The conflicting visual data can be very confusing if you only summon the calendar to find out what day it is.
