[Dx4win] DX4WIN under Linux

2005-04-14 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
Related to our interest in running DX4WIN under Linux, there was
this new "awareness" annoucement, and current releases claim to
run native windows DLLs if you have them. Not sure everyone has
tried that, or if 6.04 inclusion of a driver interferes with that option.
If so, maybe we can get a 6.04L without that embedded driver?

News

David G?mbel announced:

A while ago we were debating an initiative named "Wine-Probe"[1] (which
would roughly equal "Wine-tasting" in english) on wine-devel that was in
the making between Wirtschaftsf??rderung Region Stuttgart GmbH and us
(ITOMIG). Its goal is to make local software vendors aware of the potential
business opportunity in a Wine-based port or a Wine/Linux version of their
software. It's also designed to be beneficial for the Wine project as a
whole, e.g. by providing AppDB entries and success stories.

This is to let you know that we've officially launched the initiative by
today. It has already made it into several (german speaking) news sites[2],
so I'd say things look promising. We're looking forward to the interest and
feedback we'll get in the weeks to come.

[Dx4win] QSL Comments

2005-02-18 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
I think this is a great idea. I've always wondered why the only
things you can put on the label are groupname and the first
word of the Callsign Notes field. Why not "field" the QSO Notes
entry, too? Thanks, David.

[Dx4win] Pt 2 Print log for DXCC with Multi QSO's on QSL

I use Excel and add a counter field that tells me how many times
a callsign appears in my list. I hold two printouts, one sorted by band/mode

[Dx4win] Bug - Logbook Field "Upload"

2005-01-02 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
Happy New Year!

I reported a bug in (v6.03) the Logbook view this weekend. It
seems that my use of "Uploazd Confirm" as a field in
my Logbook view gets set to and populated with the
"Upload Date" when I start DX4WIN. If I go into the
Report Editor and simply click OK, it gets set properly
to the "Upload Confirm" again. Anyone else?

[Dx4win] report printing/landscape

2005-01-01 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
This has been true since 6.03 was released. I completed
a bug report and posted the finding here as soon as I loaded
the new release. The workaround that I've used is to output
to Adobe Acrobat and use Adobe to print - I know few people
have the authoring Acrobat installed, but I was lucky enough to
be able to use this workaround. You might find some other
intermediate form that works for you. (Excel, SunOffice, etc)

I understand the "fix" is in a patch that is "soon to be released".

[Dx4win] DXCC Submission

When I do a submission, I noticed that it seems to
"default" to mixed, leaving Confirmed QSOs in both
PHO and CW summary reports.

I can't get them to be Submitted.

Can I do it by setting the existing list of Submitted QSOs
to Credited and then faking a second submission?

Naturally, I would merge the three (Mix, PHO, CW) resulting
submission logs.

[Dx4win] moving log from 1 computer to

2004-12-13 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
Here's what I do:

1. Create a filter on the shack computer to show only the QSOs
that are AFTER the latest QSO on the other computer. Export
the filter-ed QSOs to a floppy.

2. Import the exported QSOs from the floppy to the other computer.

3. Make a full copy of the other computer database. Copy it to disk
on the shack computer. Open it. Immediately do "Backup". Done.

It gets more compilcated if you need to merge QSL Managers, etc,
but there are details on the AD1C website - a highly worthwhile site.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN 6.03 DXCC Submission

2004-12-02 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
Has anyone found issues with the DXCC award submission?

I'm confused that it generates a listing of 1,207 QSOs, but
the summary will say it has 1,175 submitted afterwards. Any
thoughts on the "missing 32"?

It "looks" like DX4WIN is simply taking the Confirmed Total
and subtracting the Checked total to get the Submitted number,
but the QSL listing has more. Any ideas why?

I'm sure I'm being dumb or tired, but I don't get it.

73, Byron

PS. And if anyone knows an easy way to get the details of
your LOTW QSLs printed for cross-checking, I'd love to hear
about that.

[Dx4win] Post-5BDXCC submissions

2004-11-25 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
Floyd:

For my submissions, I just let DXCC control the export.
I only use the group field to control what's printed on the
QSL label. This means I may need to do multiple
submissions from DX4WIN, or externally organize them.

I have a huge submission to make in January. I'm expecting
that I'll need to export the submission report so I can
manipulate it in EXCEL ( still WINdows) to sort the
multi-QSO cards properly and merge and sort the various
awards. For example, I'll have 5B-MIX, a bunch of single-band
MIX/CW/SSB and Challenge. At what they are charging I don't
want to send one extra card, nor have a review error made on
the other end. Although this is a huge effort, it resolves the risk
of me losing the cards or having the print become unreadable,
and with 4-year-olds in the house I know there is a good chance
these QSLs will become the subject of some attention in the future.

73, es Good Luck!

[Dx4win] LOTW Stats versus DX4WIN

2004-10-23 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
I notice that my LOTW stats don't match my DX4WIN stats.

I have previously downloaded my "upload results", but
now I struggle in preparing a major submission. Since the
LOTW doesn't seem to support rtf downloads and the
report is sorted by country name in LOTW, does anyone
have a good suggestion for preparing a submission?

Right now, I'm thinking I just let DX4WIN generate my
worst-case 1,000+ QSL submission, export that and
delete the rows that represent a LOTW "pending" QSL.
Then use LOTW to submit for the pending and the
added count of what DX4WIN says. Then, let ARRL
sort things out on their end. Not cheap, but removes the
risk of card losss, etc, from my end.

I don't see any way to change "Upload Confirmed" to Submitted
so I can do a multi-QSO change, and I can't get the related
filtering to work in updating large numbers of QSOs.

Any suggestions?

[Dx4win] QSL Label Editing Bug v6.03

2004-10-02 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
If I attempt to change the font on a standard QSL label
while my log is open, the thread zero (0) process of
DX4WIN jumps up to peg my CPU and never comes
back. This happens when I click the button to close the
window (OK, Cancel, etc). If I have the database closed
when I edit the label everything works fine.

"It hurts when I do this. So, don't do it." Yeah, I know,
but shouldn't the software stop some other way than
pegging the "meter"?

I was able to change the QSL Method by:

Searching for everything that was Direct,

I don't know if it was because of multiple

[Dx4win] SWL Labels

2004-07-22 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
I received several responses to my note regarding
the use of the Print SWL Labels capability in DX4WIN.

Some instructed me on how to use it. Thanks, but I didn't
find anything wrong with what I was doing. But I really do
appreciate the effort to help.

Others asked what I was trying to accomplish.

Let me describe again what is happening:

I have never operated RTTY. And when I attempt
to "Print SWL Labels" about two dozen labels show
up in Preview, but randomly they have their MODE
set to RTTY. When I check the logbook for that date
and time (no callsign shown other than the SWL) there
are QSO's but the mode isn't RTTY.

So, I'm trying to locate the SWL entries so I can correct
the MODE and print the labels. Oh, and make sure everything
else on the label is correct.

[Dx4win] LOTW Upload Confirm/Submit/Awarded

2004-06-10 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
While I suspect this is going to be a nightmare for a short
time, does anyone know a trick for getting the ARRL LOTW
"Awarded" information into your DX4WIN database?

I completed the "roundtrip" to get my ADI download and
import it using "duplicate QSO sets Upload Confirmed"
which is great, but those are also Awarded and I can't
seem to use filters (10m, Upload Conf = Y) to do a mass
QSO update. So it seems like I need to do a Submission,
which will be a mess since I would need to manually set every
QSL that was previous done (prior to DX4WIN and LOTW, too).

It "feels" like I have years of work ahead of me to get LOTW and
DX4WIN in-sync, since DX4WIN will need me to specify the
specific QSO that was submitted and awarded and that detail
doesn't seem to be readily available electronically.

Ideas?

[Dx4win] Auditing your QSL Status

2004-06-06 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
When you ask about "easy" ways to check your QSL
status, it becomes obvious that easy is a relative term.

Right now, I am pursuing several awards, and I'm using
the group/groupname feature to make this a little more
cost effective for me.

Rather than use groups for location, equipment, etc,
I set them to awards of interest.

0. All QSOs in File, a surpressed groupname string.
1. New DXCC
2. New DXCC CW
3. New DXCC SSB
4. New DXCC 160m
...etc...

I use twenty numbers now, including "Our Recent QSO",
"ur Special Event Station" and "New IOTA". That I could
easily expand if I cared to track each band/mode discretely
but I don't.

Also, I've standardized my QSL Method values, so that I can
search on USA Managers (using QSLsvc) and make the
foreign QSL Method either Direct or BURO.

Then I went through a DXCC report, clicking on the ones
that I need. By using F! in the QSL/Group field, I was able
to go through a few thousand QSOs in not-too-long a time.

When the QSL arrives, before I set the confirmed flag, I
be sure to cancel any conflicting "new ones" by setting their
group to zero or the appropriate alternative. For example,
if I had it set to "New DXCC 17m" and a 17m SSB arrives,
any 17m SSB go to zero, but 17m CW goes to "New DXCC band/mode".

Periodically, I can check what I'm looking for for each band, or mode,
or whatever I've set the group number to.

This makes logging the received cards a little more work,
but it really helps me keep on top of what I need and where
the cards are.

I hope this helps or gives you some ideas to try.

I'd love to hear any others.

2004-05-29 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
At 9:00 PM EDT on 05/29/2004 I printed 100 QSLs.
When I approved the printouts, cleared the print flags
and set the QSL date, all QSLs were dated 05/30/2004.

I saw this the first time I printed under 603 but thought
I'd imagined it. Not this time, though.

[Dx4win] QSL Label Printing Speed

2004-05-26 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
Does anyone know a trick of two for speeding up
the printing of pages of QSL labels? I'm using

It looks beautiful on my parallel port HP laser 4MP,
but it is S L O W.

Any trick to that?

This under Windows 2000 and DX4WIN 6.02 and 6.03

[Dx4win] Canvas does not allow drawing

2004-05-19 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx

Msg 'Canvas does not allow drawing'

Q:
What does the error message 'Canvas does not allow drawing' mean?

A:
you may have run out of resources, which means a new DC cannot be
allocated. Usually this is a result of not freeing unused DCs or other
objects
you are attempting to draw to an device context that is not yet valid.
Such as in the create constructor of a component.
you are trying to draw on a canvas while your last draw-operation has
not finished yet. In this case you can use Canvas.Lock or Canvas.TryLock to
fix it.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN 6.03 Filter - Date+Time

I was trying to EXPORT for LOTW last evening. My previous

When I used time (03:00Z) with the date, I filtered all but 12 QSOs.
When I used date (the exact same one) I got 669 QSOs. And I
hadn't worked 657 QSOs in the first three hours that day.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN with M2 Controller

2004-02-14 Thread ARS NZ3O (Byron) FM29fx
I have an M2 2800 Azimuth controller that was recently
upgraded to the latest release of the main board. When
I connected it back to the serial port on my PC I experienced
the following:
1. When I use "F11" to turn the antenna, only the first two
digits of a direction greater than 99 are used. So, attempts
to turn to 330 result in the antenna pointing to 33. The next
push of F11 results in no response. The third push (assuming
you use a different azimuth) moves it just like the first push.
And so on. (It seems like maybe the M2 protocol changed?)
2. When I use HYPER terminal, I simply type 330 and things
work fine. This tells me the current protocol is .
Is that what DX4WIN has always used, or is this a change?
