Re: [Dx4win] What is the future of DX4WIN?

Developers ? Which developers ?...
DX4Win USED to be perfect, but the so-called developers are just
ignoring people who paid for the program... Not nice...

Hi all,

DX4WIN is also (almost) perfect for my needs. Sure, would love to have this or
that little neat feature, but these are also not available from other logging
programms.

And one thing I like very much with DX4WIN that developers don't feel the need
to implement EVERY feature EVERY user wants to have. So it remains a compact
software with no glitches or running errors or data losses. And the UI stays
the same I have adopted over the years. There is nothing worse when each second
version comes in a complete new UI and you have to rearrange it as you are used
to.

Many thanks for the good work so far!

To all DX4WIN users:

We really need Paul to do something. He promised the databases would be
available on the next update, but that was four years ago. I have been
asking for full integration with WSJT-X for years to no avail.

This is a great program with a very active user base, but very little
commitment from Paul. I wonder if Paul would be willing to sell his
interest in the product to a group of users. We might all consider buying
him out and then forming our own development team and support group. We
could even make it open source to encourage more developers to get involved.

Paul, I think it is about time that you let us know what your future plans
entail. It is not fair to your loyal users to keep them in the dark and not
provide any further development. We all scratch our heads and talk among
ourselves, but we just cannot figure out why you no longer want to support
your fine program. Are you bored? Have health problems? Lost interest?

Bottom line, what would it take to buy you out? I would be happy to lead a
user group to see if we can do just that. I would not do it for any profit
motive, and my time and money would be provided for the benefit of all.

In fact, if you were willing to talk I would suggest that we form a
501(c)(3) to make it a non-profit venture. I personally think it would be
fun for the users to take ownership in the application. The biggest issue
is can we find users who have the technical background to support the
product? I have no idea what programming languages and database software
you use to power DX4WIN, but whatever you use is working great. Would you
want to continue to provide overall technical leadership or would you prefer
to retire? All of these questions and issues would have to be discussed.

Can you project your future revenue streams over the next three years? Can
you provide actual revenue over the past three years? If so, I am sure we
can monetize your financial interest in DX4WIN as it stands today. You have
a great product that has stood the test of time over 25 years. I am sure
you would like to see it continue well into the future.

I am a former partner with Deloitte & Touche and for the last 30 years have
owned and operated three family businesses. I am now retired, but I have
the background to help in such a transaction. My sole interest is to see
DX4WIN become more actively developed and supported for benefit of the
general ham radio community.

Paul, please let me know via the reflector or privately if the time is right
for you to discuss future options.

I would also invite any other members of the user community to express their
interest in joining me in forming a group to keep DX4WIN alive and as a
legacy to its founder. Jim, AD1C, would definitely have to be one of the
founding user group members. All if favor, say aye!

I am sure that if we formed a user group, we would have many users who would
want to volunteer their services to help with various aspects of
distribution, user support and development of DX4WIN going forward. We
would need volunteers to upgrade and support the website. Help with new
user installations. Help with ongoing product development, etc.

If Paul can provide us with a price, we can then determine the best way to
raise the funds to buy him out. We could ask for donations. We could also
continue to charge modest amounts for new installations and updates -- but
only until the initial buyout amount has been paid off. Thereafter, we
might explore a donation based model just to raise enough money to pay for
ongoing administrative expenses -- if any. Again, our user group could be
creative and flexible as we work together to evolve the product overtime. I
do not think this would be that big an effort to organize as long as Paul
thinks the time is right. Ultimately, it all depends on what Paul wants to
do.

Paul, in the interest of your many devoted users, is this something that we
can begin to discuss with you?

Am I the only one that is missing an expansion of user settings regarding
CW/SSB/DIGI frequency cut off.

Would be nice if one could define a frequency span (start/stop) for example
DIGI.

[Dx4win] Fwd: Integration with JTDX/WSJT

The answer to the original question is quite easy : yes, or no.
But even that seams to be too  painful for the developpers to answer.
Even ON4AOI, the "distributor", does not answer an email sent to him
about this issue.
This is totally unacceptable. How can you people treat your customers

[Dx4win] 2 CALLSIGNS

Hi
Before I mess up with logs, one question :
let's say I use JTDX alternatively with 2 different callsigns. The user
callsign is part of the adif file.
Now, when I have one log open under DX4Win, if I import the JTDX
"wsjtx_log.adi" file, will it only import that callsign, or will it
import the whole log, regardless of the callsign used ?

Any Belgians here using 2 callsigns alternatively, please contact me

Hi Mike

I trust you request those cards, so your settings for the F2 key are
actually for confirming incoming cards, not usefiull for requesting cards.
Just manually modify those EY8MM QSOs. What is default value for label ?
You can change it manually for those QSOs, and put or leave a N, input
the date and change method to direct.

That's all, folk !

QSL Method = Direct
QSL selection after F2 key = Specify New QSO Filter

Any ideas, besides printing a page of faux labels that I don't need???

Hi Paul,

The QSL Managaer Editor is not available in DX4WiN 9.0x.

The easiest way would be to download and install the latest country file from:

 https://www.country-files.com/category/dx4win/

The country file contains the QSL manager database.

Dave, Yes, I know that page, that is where it shows that it has been

And I do not think an upload of 1 QSO takes that much time that it

I know my QSO are in the queue, I am just wondering why they take so

But the program is not being adapted to the changes in our ham world...

Is it that hard to implement these improvements ?
All other programs do that, why can't Clublog do it too ? Is it that hard ?

But no matter what we Europeans say about it, there will still be no

But this is not the first time that the question has been asked of
updates, so F6EXV right to ask again.

I have been a user / supporter for some 20+ years now, even though
I'm not so active other than contests, or I never have used new data
modes, I follow with interest the comments. I also compare features
that I see in my contest logging software, with that of DX4WIN.

I think the last paid software upgrade was a small tinker round the
edges, but what is telling to me is some visual functionality was
lost, namely support of skins. I am pretty sure that the original
team was more than just Paul;  it is possible that he doesn't have
the capability for major upgrades ?

Last point, and a surprise in store for me - ZL2IFB made a comparison
spreadsheet a while ago, which is still available for downloading and
contributing if you so desire ( try G4IFB.com , under Logger32, which
was his choice of programme).  So I just downloaded it to my tablet,
and scored DX4WIN.    He scored Logger32 as 75%;  I scored DX4WIN as
70%,  so maybe there are no great gains to be had ? Needs looking at
later.

Luc and all other,
there could be some other reason that we don't hear from Paul with

I have been always in contact with Paul since version 1.02 via phone

But didn't hear from him anymore since 31-03-2020 so lets hope
nothing else is going on.

Maybe I am old school but automatic uploads isn't a top priority
since you can do it
with a few click, importing from wsjt(-x) can be done also very easy
off line.
My point is are we still radioamateurs or just users that only depend
on a computer?
Every qso I make in FT8 or JT65 mode I type in myself and then I am
sure the details

Are correct in my log.
Why you may ask.
I made a lot of rigfiles where only standard modes can be
used/selected not all the new modes
That grow every day, infact these all count for Digital mode. If for
example dx4win receive
mode = 1 then depending on the rigfile it know that the mode is USB.
If it receive mode = 0
then it know it is LSB but if it receive mode = 5 (USB-D or data)
then how it has to know it is FT8
and not JT65 with submode JT65b? At that moment the program needs to
act different

and depend on a "txt" that comes in and not on a value
In my opinion this is not done in 123 to make it fool prove.

My 2 cents

Re: [Dx4win] Auto Upload to LOTW, etc.

2020-04-06 Thread Paul F6EXV

Hi Bruce
Let me be clear : I like DX4Win a lot. It has many features that are
very easy to use, and does MOST of what I (and may I think most users)
expect from a logging program.
Re LoTW, it has been experiencing long delays in the past weeks/days,
but uploads take a few minutes if not seconds to be completed when it
works OK.
Bruce, count the number of mouse clicks your procedure needs, even
including reading the email you receive from LoTW., and including the
newly confirmed QSOs into your log.
The program by N2AMG called L32LogSync requires 2 (two) clicks to do ALL
this (this program works with Logger32 and DXLab, at least).
If this program works with 2 logging programs, it should work with 3,
obviously requiring changes in DX4Win architecture. Are these changes a
2 year-job or a few hours, I do not know, I am a full ignorant in
computering.

And again, this could be optional if this was to be implemented some day.

As for logging WSJT/JTDX QSO directly into DX4Win, I see no reason why
to object to such improvement.

So my question to the developpers remain : what are they working on, if
they are working on anything ?

Re: [Dx4win] Development

2020-04-05 Thread Paul F6EXV

Hi Bruce
Let's face it : the 2 major competitors to DX4Win are Logger32 and DXLab.
Both are free, and very well supported. I am also thankfull to all our
DX4W friends who kindly spend their time answering any questions.

They basically do everything DX4Win does, plus other things.
Yes I agree, DX4Win is intuitive, and I lilke the ease of searching
through the log with several criteria (like all the QSO on 17m in CW
with Chile for example). Other features are very nice too.

One major difference is what I mentioned in my original message : easy
and "automatic" interaction with LoTW and JTDX/WSJT.
I have been testing L32, and could easily configure it so that each QSO
is automatically uploaded to Clublog and to LoTW upon completion. No
need to do anything to achieve that.
When I make a contact in JTDX, the QSO is automatically transfered to
L32, no mouse click whatsoever

I wish DX4Win would allow the same possibilities.

But even more important, lack of communications from the developpers is
sort of unacceptable, keeping in mind the program is not free. And I am
not talking about myself on this...

So, what next ?
73 and stay away from the beast !

Thanks for your input.
I disagree with you : to take a simple example, L32LogSync will
(automatically for each QSO if you set it up this way) upload QSOs to
ClubLog and/or LoTW very easily.
JTDX and WSJT make provisions to send QSO directly to some logs, like
Logger32 for example, and it is not the only one. We cannot log into
DX4Win, and this requires an import of the whole WSJT log, duplicated
included...

These features are very usefull, and make our lifes easy.
Whether QSOs are uploaded one by one, or every X period, the total
trafic is the same alltogether.

But the main point is : what are the developpers working on, if on
anything ?

WE NEED INFORMATION !

Paul,
My point of view is that
all these automatic uploads leads to many errors
and unneeded internet traffic.

check eQSL where I get every week claims for qso's
with wrong band, wrong time etc even fake qso's are
there now and then.
I prefer the way it is now, after I overlooked my log I upload.

I have a total of 3711 bandslots with deleted (160M<>13cm) on clublog
and 3662 without deleted, if you check clublog on all bands my Ranking = Nr
1
Also on WAZ my Ranking is 1st place, I have 11 bands WAS and only 2 more on
6M to have 12 bands WAS
I couldn't have done it without DX4WIN that is sure

My 2 cents

[Dx4win] Notes for this QSO

2019-12-20 Thread F6EXV

Hi all
When I log a QSO in FT8 mode with JTDX, there is a field called comment
whre I sometimes put a note in (mostly "dupe")

In the adif file of the JTDX log, this field is named "comment".
What name should I replace it, so that when I import into DX4Win, this
field appears in the "note for this QSO" field ?
I tried to rename "notes", but them it appears in the "notes for this
call" field, which is something I do NOT want.

Thanks

[Dx4win] Rotator control

2019-12-11 Thread F6EXV

Hi all
I used to have my Prosistel 70D rotor work perfectly with DX4Win.
It no longer does, and the com port it was connected with (com 2) no
longer shows on the device manager of my Windows 10.
I tried com 1 on both DX4Win and Prosistel, it still does not work, and
they cannot communicate.

Any idea what I should check and/or modify ?

Hi all
I was connected on VE7CC, left the station for diner, and when I got

I tried the very usual procedure... right click on the cluster window,
re-select VE7CC, and nothing happens, except my callsign appearing

How can I cure this issue please ?

Or is it the contest log file you try to find there?

Depending on your contest log program, you have to save an ADIF file
somewhere. That ADIF file can be imported to DX4WIN via the menu File

have

Guy,

I think you are right, the DX Spots member list is a great feature. However, it
indicates whether a station is an LOTW user but not if they actively use LOTW.
Over half (58%) of all LOTW users have not uploaded QSO data in the past year
and more than 25% have not uploaded in the last five years. The search provides
a convenient way to view a station's last upload date which can be helpful in
deciding whether to send a card or wait for lotw confirmation. Also, it does
not require an XML subscription. Just an example.

This works for every user of DX4WIN since version 8.xx, your way around is
not a bad idea

I import to the other program which allows to me modify the reports.
I export to an adif file.
I open BV7 and import that adif file (I want to use BV7 for my labels) .. no
QSO is imported.

I am lost. Can someone help me to deal with this problem ?

For info, if I try to export my general log which includes JT65 QSO, they
are all imported no problem... EXCEPT the JT65 ones which disappear !!

If the program opened in the Add Real Time mode, then it would expect
data from the transceiver, i.e. frequency, mode and such. However, if
the radio wasn't on at the time of starting DX4Win, it would go into a
radio time-out of whatever time in seconds is set up for, then
promptly default into Stop Radio mode. That would be a pain in the ass
for those who frequently start DX4Win with the xceiver off. Once the
program is up and running, it is easy enough to just press F9 and get
it ready to log. After a while, it becomes a second nature.

Several months back you mentioned that things had finally settled down a

I know that I am, in general, satisfied with what DX4Win does. The only
thing I really want is hooks to flDigi so I (we) can run digital modes and
log those contacts seamlessly. I suspect this is a significant change as I
recall reading somewhere that the way the current digital programs integrate
with other programs does not exist is DX4Win.
The other issue I see requested a lot is the ability to log other modes.
That would become even more important if the program was able to interface
with the current crop of digital programs.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

[Dx4win] Cannot open log

2015-01-19 Thread Paul F6EXV

Hi all
After a problem on my computer, I had to force Windows 7 to close.
When I reopened DX4Win, and tried to bring up my log, I get the message :
Unknown version of logfile (

The strange thing is it only affects my current F6EXV log (and the
safety backup made because of abnormal termination). Others logs do open
without problem.
I am in deep sh..., as my external disk where I had a proper backup was
stolen a couple of days afo...)

Help please !

Re: [Dx4win] Status

2014-09-07 Thread Paul F6EXV

Hi Paul
Thank you very much for taking the time to give us these explanations.
We sympathize with your difficulties.
Many requests have been made over the past few months, so good to read
you will be working on some.
DX4Win does basically what I expect from a logging program, and I do not
intend to change to, for example one that has updates almost every day
(a pain in the neck)
We will be looking forward to reading about the implemented
chagesupdates when your time permits, at keast we know something will
happen.

Keep up with the good work ! Thanks and also thanks to AD1C.

house for a few month. Lots of stuff went into storage, including my
radios. But finally after a long wait, we are supposed to close on the new
house at the end of this month. Without the radios connected to my
development computer etc I never felt secure enough to release a new
version. But as soon as the dust settles, I expect to be back in business.
I have collected plenty of suggestions that need work, some of them have
been implemented already.

All DX4WIN users should feel good about the regular updates of the country

[Dx4win] DX4WIN UPDATE

2014-09-06 Thread Paul F6EXV

Hi all
It is very very frustrating to see that there is absolutely no
information on upcoming updates on the main program.
It would be quite easy to say either there will be no updates, or to say
which points are being worked on for next update.
If there will be improvement, I would like to see one addition on the
QSL method choices, i.e. add OQRS bureau and OQRS direct.

But once again, having been a DX4Win user for many many years, how come
there is no info whatsoever on what we can expect from the developers.

Really it is your choice... Make sure you do not delete it before you

It appears to me that an Entity like Willis would have VK9W because
Australia actually issues the Calls for there specifically as VK9Wxx.
So, the Entity would be obvious from the Call.

However, some Countries use the same prefix for several ARRL Entities and
there needs to be some way to differentiate them in the database.
An HK0 could be San Andres or Malpelo, so a /M is put after the HK0 to
specifically denote it as Malpelo. Other eaxmples would be FR and JD1 versus
 PY0Txx and CE0Yxx.

Example Willis is VK9W, but Malpelo is HK0/M.

Hi all, and Kostas
Fair enough, this is an option. Thank you for the suggestion.
Still, the only customizable info is PSE or TNX QSL and a phrase that
will be on every label, but will be the same on every callsign. But I see
no solution if I want something else. _/For example/_, no comment at all
on PJ7X label, and PSE QSL via REF on TO5FJ label.
In other words, a fully customizable label text for each callsign.
Instead of customizing the label one time for the whole program, how
about a customizable label text per callsign ?

the same command will print, depending on the group...

Hello !
An easy way to take care of invalid QSO is to filter for valid QSO
before you do the export to adif.
Go to filter; on the mixed DXCC field, select -- and press enter.
You can then do the export to adif, and accept the Filter active, use
it for export.
Now, this is only if you have *not* done the changes to S, C or I. If
you have, then I do not know how to do this.

North/South Cook, Ogasawara vs. Minami Torishima) to invalid: QSO's.

I tried to get DX4WIN to invalidate the invalid QSO's by using
QSO/Mark invalid for awards, which put an I in Mixed/Band/Mode for 9
different awards. That is apparently insufficient, as these QSO's keep
coming up in the Clublog report. The index has no entries for Invalid
QSO so I am at a loss as to how to proceed.

How does one declare a QSO to be invalid?

Re: [Dx4win] ST0R Spots

Hi Val
The spot does not show because you have worked that ST0R station before.
Let's imagine there is another operation using ST0S. Such a spot would

A station worked on same band and mode will not show up again... UNLESS
you put that call in your alert window. In such a case, all spots from

However, unlike every other country I have worked but not confirmed, which
spots in red letters, My packet screen does not show spots of ST0R on any
band on which I have previously made a QSO.

Can anyone give me some reason for this? And how to correct?

Why not ST0R? the spot simply does not show.

Not to mention the Spanish guys. If within your own country, do not use

The Same Call window will show AD1C, AD1C/0 and AD1C/KH4 QSOs without
requiring the modifications you describe. The problem with what you
are doing is that if the other station uploads his log to Logbook of
the world, signed with the AD1C/0 certificate, and you upload the same
QSO but logged as AD1C, LoTW will never match those two QSOs.

Here is an example: recently I think ZS9Z/1 uploaded their log to LoTW
(Penguin Island). They got hundreds of matches. They also signed the
*same log* as ZS9Z/ZS1, uploaded those QSOs and got *even more*
matches. This means DXers were logging callsigns *other* than what
the DX operator was signing. Don't expect to be so lucky in the
 future.

This would be an entirely new DXCC entity, not a reincarnation of the

Remember that to be added to the ARRL DXCC list, one of the following
 *must* be true:

 a) The entity is a UN Member State.

 b) The entity has been assigned a callsign prefix bloc by the ITU.
(The exceptions to this rule are international organizations, such as
the UN and ICAO. These Entities are classified under Special Areas,
3.a); and Ineligible Areas, 4.b).) A provisional prefix bloc
assignment may be made by the Secretary General of ITU. Should such
provisional assignments not be ratified later by the full ITU, the
Entity will be deleted from the DXCC List.

It is not known whether or when either of those two conditions will be
satisfied. The entity will *not* be added to the DXCC list until that
time (countries are not added retroactively, nor are they back-dated).

Get on the air and work whatever you hear. I will release a new

right, This is how DX4WIN selects island names from within an island

Re: [Dx4win] interesting, can't change QSL manager

2011-01-09 Thread F6EXV Paul
Hi George
You have to close your log, go to Files/Database/QSL managers.
There you delete your wrong entry.
Save changes, open your log again, select the QSO and now you can enter
the right manager.
The manager database will be updated properly.

Unfortunately, you have found at least one of those updating areas.

For vers. 8, if you want your default QSO to be entered with the LoTW Upload
flagged checked (that is, every QSO will be uploaded to LoTW), you should go
to Preferences, QSO and check the LoTW box under Label/Upl Flag.

If you only want some QSOs to be uploaded, you can do that several ways.
You can set a date filter (pick a date range), or filter by all JA QSOs, or
whatever, then under the LoTW menu, select Set LoTW Upload Flag. Once you
have the flags set, you can select LoTW, Export for LoTW and follow the
 steps in the program.

 Good luck.

I read the note posted about doing so.

It says the file needs to be updated for V8.

 I am running V8.04.

When I follow the instructions in the posted note, I find I have no

 What do I do?

of the confirmations on the list. This seemed pretty odd until I noticed
that all of these were marked by DX4WIN as confirmed by LoTW, however when I
looked at the site there was no QSL.

What apparently happened is that I downloaded a chunk of my log, used
LoTW/Import for LOTW to import those and DX4WIN didn't check if the contacts
were confirmed, setting the LoTW Cnfm flag for all QSOs.

I was able to recover from this by clearing all of the LoTW confirm flags
(create a selection with Cnfm:Y in the LoTW column then LoTW/Clear LoTW
confirmed which cleared all of them. Downloaded QSLs (not QSOs!) from LoTW
from all of my calls and re-imported, now it looks correct.
I just wanted to warn anyone to be careful what you load into DX4WIN.

Another issue is that the submission report includes all confirmations,
paper plus LoTW. This means that I can't just use it as is (i.e. hand it to
a field checker with my stack of cards) because the LoTW QSLs will need to
 be deleted.
Is there a way that I can create a card-in-hand only submission report?

Re: [Dx4win] Country error because of wrongly given callsign

2010-11-02 Thread F6EXV Paul
Hi
When foreign operators operate in China, they have to give their
callsign first, followed by the callsign of the club station they use.
So it is indeed China, and yes, you may just change the country to BY in
the prefix box.
This is sort of an exception to the general rule that says that the
begining of the call is always the entity from which the QSL takes
place. Americans operating in Canada often use 5 I think they have to do
it this way) W1XYZ/VE3 while they theoritically should sign VE3/W1XYZ.
Maybe someone in Canada or USA can comment on the correct form to use in
these cases.

XZ5A (QSO on 15 June 1981) as Invalid in the column DXCC for all mixed,
band and mode.
When I upload the adif file created, I do get a message from Clublog

Well, it is already marked as invalid

Anyone has faced this situation ? How did you solve it if you did ?
Is it necessary to mark Invalid in ALL the boxes ?

DX4Win will do all the statistics very easily.
You just need to tell the program to only consider the LoTW confirmed
contacts in the report generator / award flags.
The procedure to upload the new QSOs to LoTW, and import the new
confirmations is not automatic, but still very simple. I do it in a few
minutes at the end of every month...
Unless you want to submit to DXCC several times a year, I do not see the

Re: [Dx4win] PJ split

2010-08-19 Thread F6EXV Paul
Hi again
The vast majority of the DX community ASSUMES there will be changes;
which is indeed LIKELY.
There are still many questions to answer by the DXAC ( I am not
surprised they have not said anything yet). But keep in mind there are
several options.
1/ Delete the 2 present PJs and create 4 new entities.
2/ Just create 2 new entities : if so, most everyone _assumes_ these
will be Curaçao and Sint Marteen. It may not be that obvious.

The DXAC in the past has taken MANY irrational decisions. So, unless
DXAC explains in advance how they view the situation, I would not bet on
any obvious decision.
To just name one example : the date of creation of FJ is questionable.
The unpublished reasoning is the date the island was added to the DoS
list of special sovereignty areas makes it a new entity.
This date is actually the date of the information by the DoS of the new
political status, but the actual change took place earlier.
Another question is : why did they not delete the combination of the ex
FS and FJ, and create 2 new entities, since the political change
affected both islands simultaneously and equally ?

So again, unless DXAC makes an official annoucement of what they _plan_
to do, I would wait for the decision to be official.

Will be happy to discuss that off the list.

I don't want to over write my current country file but would prefer to add
the new PJ DXCC's that seem 99.9% certain to happen on 10/10/10 to my

I plan to release a country file update the weekend of October 2/3
will contain the potential new PJ entities. It will be preliminary as
official prefixes have not been announced. Even if the prefixes do
change, the next country file update will have those changes and your
DXCC status will remain the same.

 Until then, please be patient.

 Hello all
A fiend of mine has asked me to print the labels for a DX operation he made.
I have his log under DX4Win version 8.03, but cannot find the remove
 duplicate QSO function...
Has it disappeared, or I am getting old ?

Several people have worked him several times on the same mode and same
band, so there is no need to confirm the contact more than once.
Any hint on how to achieve that please ?

 and thanks in advance
