I agree with Jim that it makes most sense to use true north. The magnetic pole shifts each year, and the amount of shift is indicated on nautical charts as the Variation. Each bearing taken with a magnetic compass must be corrected for the Variation, and while the year-to-year change is small, it means that every time you realign your antenna, you have to recalculate the correction. While DX4W may permit an offset, it makes no sense to me to use magnetic north a) because it shifts, and b) because any program that I have found that calculates bearings and distance always is based on the geographic north pole. Nautical charts are always related to true north. It makes more sense to me to set up your antenna once to true north using an available magnetic compass, and then to establish a point or datum on the ground as the true north alignment point for future realignments due to beam changes, maintenance, storm damage, etc. That is what I do and it has worked very successfully. For what it is worth. 73, Jim, VE3IQ On 18 Oct 2009 at 10:03, ON4AOI wrote: Hi Jim, If you have your rotator controlled by dx4win its easy to setup. I found some strange frequencies in his log in the Notes for this QSO field: 80m:0/24KHz 15m:0/22KHz 15m:0/34KHz The last one of the above flavor seems to have been made on 2007/03/05: 40m:0/6KHz Then they start with a different syndrome on 2007/09/22, the first one is: 40m:0/7,009KHz 60m:0/404KHz (probably should be 5404KHz) 17m:0/18,103KHz The 1st and 3rd definitely look like they should have been split frequency QSOs, but VFO-A (or whatever it's called in Ten-Tec parlance) read back as 0. Has anyone running a Ten-Tec Orion seen this problem? It looks to be sporadic, so it's probably hard to debug. And he upgraded to an Orion II, which may have happened some time in 2007, based on the way the error syndrome changed. - Jim -- Jim Reisert AD1C, mailto:jjreis...@alum.mit.edu jjreis...@alum.mit.edu, http://www.ad1c.us __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

RE: [Dx4win] Freq doesn't change properly when clicking a spot.
Hello, Same thing with FT-1000D here. I have CW display offset set to 400 Hz, i.e. when I listen to a CW signal with 400 Hz pitch, the display shows his true frequency. But now DX4WIN sends me 400 Hz HIGHER than that the first time I click. with a second click I arrive at the correct frequency for the spotted station. But if I next click once on an SSB spot, the radio is sent to a frequency which is 400 Hz LOWER than the spotted frequency. Again, a second click sets the radio to the actual spot frequency. 73 de Kjell, PB3SM - SM6CPI -Original Message- From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Louis Dietrich Sent: 11 December 2008 19:51 To: 'Jim Reisert AD1C'; k2wa...@gmail.com Cc: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Dx4win] Freq doesn't change properly when clicking a spot. RE: [Dx4win] Freq doesn't change properly when clicking a spot.
Guy, As far as I can see, the rig files are identical to previous versions. In FT-1000 the offset is added internally direct to the display. It looks like v.7.06 now is adding an offset to the actual frequency before it is sent to the radio every time when a change of mode command is sent. This may be right for the two rigs you had problems with, but not for the 98 percent which worked OK before. You must step backwards to the point where the fix was applied and make sure that it is limited to the few problem radios. Maybe Paul can get away by adding an IF...ELSE statement... 73, Kjell, PB3SM - SM6CPI _ From: dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:dx4win-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of ON4AOI Sent: 11 December 2008 20:33 To: k2wa...@gmail.com Cc: dx4win@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Dx4win] Freq doesn't change properly when clicking a spot. Scot, Many years ago I was also using KAM and KAM+. I used a crossed ellipses display on a monitorscope for easy tuning and was quite happy. Later I was running KAM+ in parallel with PTC-II and found that PTC-II was one step ahead in reception of weak signals. But the spectrum tuning display on a row of LEDs is not so convenient. Now I have MMTTY via MicroKeyer in parallel with PTC-II. Weak signal performance is about equal but MMTTY is very flexible and so comfortable to use, especially for logging with DX4WIN. I will put it on my PC laterI only started using Telnet recently; and have a question. When I open the Packet window, can I make it default to my preferred node, or do I have to select one every time ? Use a text editor to move your favorite node to the very top of the TCP file. It will be automatically highlighted when you open the Connect window and all you will have to do is hit return to select it. I am not aware of any way to make this automated, you will still need to go through this minimal selection process. 73, Dick -- Dick Flanagan K7VC NV SM [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Dx4win mailing list Dx4win@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win
