[Dx4win] DX4WIN running under Linux
Good day all; I was kind of watching this thread for a while but didn't have much interest until a friend of mine mentioned he'd like to look for something running under Linux. I've checked the archive and didn't see much on this thread. I'd like to hear from those who have tried this under win4lin. I'd like to hear the good vs. evil on this. Greetings all; Now from being from the old school of computer programming what I would do is simply write a batch command file that copies off the appropriate directories/files either to another place on my machine or to another machine on my workgroup. Once I feel that the batch file works properly I would then schedule the batch file to run using the AT batch scheduler which has been a part of Windows right from the very beginning. You can tell I grew up in the DOS world... almost becoming a lost art. Just an FYI, I have a similar job that runs to copy files off a LINUX box to my personal laptop at 3:00 am (uses FTP... another standard offering in Windows). Job has been running without a hitch for several months now. I am sure there are third party solutions that will do the same thing. Once a programmer always a programmer... Good luck with it. I found it easier to save the data out as a fixed record length instead of a comma delimited file. This way the import feature for DX4WIN can easily define the record, mapping each of the columns to the appropriate data element. I have NO idea why DX4Windows won't export these QSOs. It did it the first time but it wont do it again. Just an FYI folks.. First I want to say thanks for all of those who provided me comments on CW keying. After spending a bit of time with things I decided to use the LPT port instead of the serial port. After a few bucks worth of parts I am a happy CW operator. One nit that I found. I found that I have to disable the Keyer when using the keyboard. I'm not sure I like that idea. Therefore if I want to go back to the paddle I have another button push. Greetings all; Well, for those of you who have the FT-920 you are in luck. There is a switch on the back of the radio right next to the Key jack. It is listed as PDL-KEY. Here is what I did based upon another member of this reflector. First, connect the computer interface to the rear key jack. Second switch the PDL-KEY switch to KEY. Finally connect my paddle to the front key jack. Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too It works!! I can key the rig with the computer without having to switch off the KEYER. I can use the paddle at the same time. I checked my Yaesu FT-920 for CW & CW-R and DX4WIN behaves normally. It reads either CW mode as CW. Greetings all; This subject might have been addressed before but I think it is worth mentioning again. I run a utility called Dimension 4. You can find it at http://www.thinkman.com/dimension4/index.html .. Since your logging software runs off the system clock, this utility keeps your system clock in sync with a time standard available on the internet. One assumes that you machine is on the internet (dialed up, DSL or cable) when operating. This way, you know you are going to be only a few milliseconds off the time standard. [Dx4win] CW keying and the IC 706 MKIIG
Greetings all and Happy Holidays; I've been spending some quality time with my IC 706MKIIG since it is the only spare radio I have to use at my new station. I've investigated the computer controlled interface I need to control the rig and found some great resources on the internet thanks to many members of this group. I am now interested in searching out CW keying. Now here is what I want to do and I am wondering if it can be done. On my primary radio (Yaesu FT-920) I can operate CW from my computer using DX4WIN as well as operate with my paddle. Is there a way to do the same with the IC-706? I would think the cable I use from the LPT port to key the rig would work but I would like to use my paddle at the same time. Do I need to use an external keyer with my paddle and use a Y-cable from it to the rig? I would like to see if there are other possibilities before I go this route. Please advise. 73 Kurt - W2MW
[Dx4win] Some odd things with PSK31 and WINNT 4.1
Greetings all; I have been using DX4WIN v. 5.03 for quite some time on my COMPAQ Armada 7800, 128m ram, 333mhz processor. I just recently started using the PSK31 feature in DX4WIN. I have had a problem where by the PSK31 display would freeze up when trying to transmit. The odd thing about it would be that I'd transmit a few times successfully, then about the 3rd or 4th transmit, the rig would be in TRANSMIT mode and the waterfall display and spectrum display would freeze up. If I close the PSK31 display, then reopen it, I would get the following error: Error starting soundcard. Device already started. Once I clicked on TX twice, I found that closing the PSK31 window and reopening it restores normal operation. Anyone have the same type of problem? BTW, I've tried other PSK31 interfaces and they seem to work without problems. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. 73; Kurt - W2MW

Not really knowing much about the Linksys router, I would seem to think that you are experiencing a time out instead of loosing track of the telnet session. You should have some user-definable parameters in any router to allow you to change and/or configure timeouts. I would not give up all hope on the Linksys router until it has been fully explored. Mind you, most of the folks on tech-support help desks don't always have the answers. If you read the RFP on DHCP, you will find that as long as the IP is active
that it will get renewed during its half-life of the lease. So if you have
an expiration of 2 hours, your IP will be "renewed" every hour.

I'm not sure this is obviously the router. Cable modem systems can be set
up ("provisioned" is the weird word they use, I guess from telephone-speak)
in a number of different ways. At least in theory, the one I'm on grants a
set-duration "lease" of an IP address. There was briefly a time where it
would drop every 2 hours regularly as clockwork, but that stopped fairly
quickly and now I keep the same IP address. I *think* the system is
automatically renewing my lease every two hours...
As for the support, I couldn't agree more. Once in a while you get someone
who knows his or her stuff, but it's rare. I've found one such guy now and
learned a "back way" to get to him. It makes things a lot better.

Actually DOS is not really "gone". One has to understand the architecture of XP, Win2K as well as WinNT4. They are much the same. DOS as well as the 16 bit runtime run as "sub-systems". This has been true with XP and its predecessors. Chances are that DOS will never go away because there are too many things tied to the DOS sub-system that makes it almost impossible to get rid of. As for accessing things like modems, soundcards or other devices all depends on how the sub-system has been designed to access them. But, for now, with the risk of getting into a long boring diatribe on this, lets just say it's not worth getting into However, the older DOS programs should be able to access these devices. 73; Kurt - W2MW XP is an evolution of WIN2000 and WIN98 and doesn't "really" have DOS. XP and WIn2000 have a Command Prompt (C:> prompt), and certain old DOS commands are still available, but I doubt you could count on "old" ham programs that utilize anything very special, e.g. soundcard, to work under XP. This is why RITTY/K6STI won't run under WIN2000 Command Prompt. If you're still tied into DOS, stick with WIN98. Someday you will want to move up though, so be thinking about saying bye bye to DOS! ;-)

If the 1000mp is anything like the FT920, you may have your cake and eat it too I use CW keying from DX4WIN and my paddle. I have connected the paddle on the front panel and my computer keying cable in the back of the rig. I have a switch on the back of the rig that disables the Keyer for the rear jack. The jack in the back of the rig is now set to straight key mode and the key jack on the front of the radio uses the built in keyer.. Might want to double check the 1000MP rear panel again. Greetings all; I'm not sure if it is me or what, but here is what I've found. I have my computer interfaced to a Yaesu FT-920. Now these went out with w/ SASEs with the lesser postage because they went out at the beginning of the year. I want to get some idea how many are outstanding to determine if I want to send a SASE w/ the correct postage After tinkering around a bit I was able to get the list I needed. It looks like I have to set my filter for a number of things including CFNM to 'N', QSL date for on or before the date sent and QSL method to 'DIRECT'. [Dx4win] Can it be the 60m mod
I just recently performed the modification to my Yeasu FT 920 to operate on 60m. All things seemed to be working just fine until I ran DX4WIN. Here is the problem I face. I find a 17m CW spot. I click on the spot and the radio responds, correct band/mode changes however the mode and band on the QSO window starts at 17m CW then switches to 20m SSB. Something is confused and I think it might be the radio. I'm just wondering if this is the infamous EPROM corruption that I've seen on the reflector lately.
