[Dx4win] Two calls - best way to handle

2004-04-23 Thread Les Kalmus
Pete,

Assign a Group number to the QSOs you make with the new call.
The title you assign to the number can print as an identifying message on
labels when you print that group number.

Subject: [Dx4win] Two calls - best way to handle

In a fit of nostalgia, I was just reissued (as club trustee) W8QZR, the
call with which I entered amateur radio 50 years ago next month (a mere
youth!). Somehow it had managed to stay un-reissued since 1970 when I gave
it up after moving to 4-land.

My question is, what's the best way to handle two calls in DX4WIN? I can
start a new log for the new call, of course, but then I don't have the
benefit of any of the information about previous QSOs with people, and the
spot window is this solid wall of red. Ideally, I'd just assign QSOs to
one or the other call on the fly, but I don't think that's possible.

Suggestions?

[Dx4win] ADIF Question

2004-07-26 Thread Les Kalmus
Hello all,

I did the IOTA test using N1MM and exported that log in ADIF for input to
DX4Win.
The QSOs imported OK except for the IOTA info. DX4Win has created IOTA data
where it could but this is for a small percentage of the data. The IOTA data
for each QSO is in each record.

Can anyone tell me how to get the received IOTA info into DX4Win without
hand fixing every QSO in Excel?

[Dx4win] help to back up log

2004-03-01 Thread Les Kalmus
Phil,

Using Windows Explorer, go to Program Files on your C drive. Find the
dx4win602 folder. In this folder you will find another folder called
Save. Open Save. You will find a file called dx4win.cty and one called
w3gt.dxl.

Copy these 2 files to another device to back up. To do that, right click
on one of the files, select "copy". Then find the device to which you
are copying. Right click on that device and select "paste". Do the same
with the other file.

[Dx4win] MicroKeyer & Win XP problems

2005-08-25 Thread Les Kalmus
I have recently put together a PC using an Asus V7A880 MB & Asus Video card
& 1 MB of RAM.
It includes a Conexant modem, CD/DVD R/W drive and Serial ATA HD using Win
XP Pro. I have put together many PCs in the past but none with the problems
I have experienced with this one.

With XP and all the other compenents updated to the latest driver release I
have had nothing but problems after the MK software was installed. The PC
will arbitrarily hang, sometimes when not much is going on. The last hang
was while I was moving the cursor with the mouse. Nothing much else was
going on. The modem is used because I have only dialup here. I am using
DX4Win and N1MM. I haven't even been able to try MMTTY yet.

I think all was well until the MK was installed but I have redone the
software so many time that I am no longer sure of the sequence of events.

Has anyone had similar experience with a similar software setup and did you
get it running? Any suggestions as to what to try? I am thinking of going
back to Win2K.

[Dx4win] V7 MMTTY Window Problem

2005-06-01 Thread Les Kalmus
In V7, the MMTTY window opens OK along with the RTTY control window.

However, the control window opens as a separate window outside of DX4WIN.
It will not stay visible upon clicking in any other window including typing
in the MMTTY window. It can be brought to the front by clicking on an
exposed portion of it or on its icon in the windows task bar.

Once visible, clicking inside the control window on almost any button causes
it to "hide" behind other DX4WIN windows, although the key click is
accepted.

I would expect it to behave in the same manner as the other DX4WIN windows
and stay put unless another window overlapping it received the focus.

Is there a setup item to control this or is this a bug?

[Dx4win] DX4WIN V7.01

2005-06-06 Thread Les Kalmus
Tony,

GO to http://www.ad1c.us and check the DX4win section. Jim has an excellent
tutorial on how to do it the best way.
You should creat a new, empty log file and import your old log file to it
and merge your country file from the old to the new version. After you are
done with any of the other work you propose, create a merged .ini file.

I like to print a summary of DXCC from the old and new systems and compare
them for any changes. I have been able to determine what was changed and why
and, in every case, there was an error in my original entries.

Works perfectly and gives you the advantage of all of the corrected
exception details in the current version of the country file.

Subject: [Dx4win] DX4WIN V7.01

Hi all,

I have just received the new key for V7.01 and am upgrading from V6.4. Has
any one come across any problems that they care to share?? I propose
following Steve's advice and installing V 7.01 in its own sub-directory then
transferring over:

1. Add new Key
2. Log File
3. Country file, what is country version file in 7.01?
4. dx4win.tcp file. Should I merge or copy over from V6.04? (I only
made one addition which I could easily just add to new v7.01 TCP file?)
5. Portmap, can I just transfer portmap info from 6.04 to 7.01? (i.e.
to ensure software/XP accept LPT2?)
6. Merge INI file.

I have changed the label file to customise a label, whilst this isn't
difficult to change again, what is the label file and if I transfer it from
V6.04 to V7.01 will I looses any new information in V7.01 file?

What I am concerned about is that copying over (and thus replacing) too many
files from v6.04 to v7.01, will naturally replace 7.01 data with 6.04 data.
A) are these files compatible and B) will I "loose" any additional data
given with the latest version??

Finally in V6.04 when I want to look up current QSO contact details, I hit
F3 this gives me data from CD Rom and then I if hit return, it takes me
automatically to QRZ.com. Frankly now with permanent high speed broad band
connection I have not upgraded my CD Rom and actually don't want to see any
of that information. Can I cut out the "middleman" and go straight to
QRZ.com from the active QSO log page??

I am sure some of these points have been covered before so please forgive me
for being lazy, maybe some of you out there have done all this and can save
me any problems.

Hi Les,
In preferences
Go to the RTTY tab
Under Type select None (this is for hardware connection)
Below you see c:\mmtty\mmtty.exe
Make sure that MMTTY is installed in that directory on your computer
Otherwise change to the correct directory.

BTW you have to download MMTTY from their official webpage because it can't
Be distributed in DX4WIN.
Select MMTTY in the input screen (windows) where also is located PSK CW etc

[Dx4win] LOTW Submission Problems

2006-12-01 Thread Les Kalmus
Dave,

I believe that if you create and use a date filter starting with the
effective 1975 date for CW credits and then do your submission, you will
see only those cards from that date to the present. If you do more than
one type of submission at a time you may have to remove or change the
filter for each one.

[Dx4win] Creating a submittal for WAZ

2006-02-27 Thread Les Kalmus
Hello all,

I want to create a single band WAZ submittal. No matter what I do, using
submit on the WAZ reports menu results in a lot of QSOs flagged.
I have done a 20M only filter but the WAZ submittal doesn't seem to care.

I wound up creating the submittal manually by filtering on 20M, then double
clicking on the report and selecting the QSOs I wanted. Now I need a listing
to use to collect the cards.

Any suggestions on how to get a listing of these? For that matter is there a
better way to have done this in the first place?

[Dx4win] LOTW ADIF thoughts??

2006-01-21 Thread Les Kalmus
John,

What am I missing in your question?

All LoTW QSOs are available for checking by the ARRL without physically
submitting a card for that QSO. The downloaded ADIF file is imported with
"Imported QSO Sets Upload Confirmed Flag" which will set the Upl Cnf to Y.

For a submission, you need physically submit only those cards for QSOs not
confirmed through LoTW. Let DX4WIN decide which QSOs to submit by setting up
a submission. To determine which were picked, do a search on Conf=Y and
Mixed=Subm, Conf=Y and Band=Subm and Conf=Y and Mode=Subm. The results are
the cards you need to submit. Any QSOs confirmed through LoTW can be done
electronically and you can find those marked for submission by doing the
same searches except with Upl Cnf=Y. By the way, you can exclude LoTW
confirmed cards by doing the searches with Conf=Y and Upl Cnf=N or
substitute LoTW confirmed cards for the physical ones with Conf=Y and Upl
Cnf=Y.

On the other hand, if you are talking about LoTW QSOs already submitted and
checked before the download, you would have to make a note of which were
used in the submission, import the ADIF file and manually set the checked
flag. This would be the easiest way if there are not too many.

Getting back to downloading the LOTW ADIF file into DX4WIN to set the
'submissions' flag for those Qs checked by ARRL. Comments that were received
in regards to this feature indicated that it was not supported but..how
about this??

1 - Download the ADIF file into a 'New' log in DX4WIN. Check this new log
for errors, etc by going into Reports|DXCC|Summary and compare it with LOTWs
online matrix.

2. - If they agree, as mine does, go to Reports|DXCC|Submission, then Save
under File|Save. Now check this new log for 'Submission' flags in your log
window and review as many qs as you prefer in the DXCC- Mixed, Band, and/or
Mode fields. In my case it looks good.

3 - Now, open your normal, everyday, log and go to File|Import/Export| which
opens a new window. Select ADIF, if not already done so, then under this
Windows File, select Merge DX4WIN Log.select the new log you created and
choose 'Open'. A new window will appear and from that choose "Imported QSO
replaces existing QSO (SLOW)" then choose OK. A progress bar will be shown
and then when completed a warning text will say No new QSOs have been added.

If you check your log now you will see that the 'Submit' flags have been
added in the appropriate fields. Now you will need to manually change the
'Submit' fields to 'Chkd'.

Am I correct now to say that statically, your DXCC Summary Report should be
accurate??
I think so unless I am missing something. Now, the next time you want to
send or take new QSL cards to the ARRL, choose Reports|DXCC\Submission, you
should see a listing of new Calls that indicate what QSL cards should be
pulled from your stash for another visit to the ARRL.

Could someone please check this to see if I'm correct in my thinking before
I SAVE the results to my log. By the number of emails I received after my
first query I know it is important to many folks.

Thanks and 73

Any chance of removing the "L". It is information that is available

I think it is valuable information in a detail report but not in a

Hi again!
I'm still don't know, what to do. The "Upload Date" field in my log is

Moreover, I can't export another ADIF file for LoTW. If I trying to do

I will export ADIF file via File-Import/Export menu, will be this file
compatible with LoTW?

[Dx4win] Where is the Tech Support?

2006-11-12 Thread Les Kalmus
John,

I believe I have read there is a com port speed issue with the Orion II.
Some Orion IIs actually run closer to 56000 not 57600 like they are
supposed to. Judging from what you are reporting, it might be worth
trying to change the comport speed in DX4WIN.
File|preferences|radio|baudrate, try lowering the baudrate little by
little until you get one that works. This might not be the answer but
it's worth trying. Classic Orions work fine.

You might want to go to this URL: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/cluster.htm
where you can download the latest update to the cluster file. Just
replace the existing file and edit the new one.

[Dx4win] Losing Q's on power outage

2007-04-03 Thread Les Kalmus
Glen,

I have always used a UPS with all my PCs. After getting creamed once or
twice by power outages I found that the cost of one of these is worth
it. I use APC which have a connection to your PC via serial or USB. The
included software shuts your PC down gracefully in case of failure but
if you size the UPS correctly your PC can run 5 to 10 minutes or more
after power loss which give you more than enough time to shut it all
down manually.

There are several other brands which I believe have the same capability.

As for DX4WIN, I have gotten in the habit of saving after every entry
because of what you mentioned. If you do use the backup file in the
circumstances you mentioned, rename the main file first so you have what
to go back to, if necessary.

[Dx4win] QSL printing question

2007-12-23 Thread Les Kalmus
I have a lot of QSOs to print labels for but I want to print QSOs for
only one call.
When I get set to print it says I have a lot instead of the four I want.
I cannot figure out how to print labels for only the call I need.
Has anyone done this?

[Dx4win] Another Label Printing Question

2007-01-01 Thread Les Kalmus
What worked for me was:

Set a filter for the specific date of the QSO; filter|selection, then
set a date range filter with the same start & end date.
Once you have that filter set, F8 to find the call. You should get only
that call for the label run. If you get more than the one label to be
printed, labels|clear print flag will clear the flags. Then reset the
flag to Y for the one QSO you want, print it, then Labels|Set print flag
to turn on that group again. Don't forget to set the print flag = N for
the one you just printed.
Then set the filter back to all QSOs.

[Dx4win] Label Settings

2007-01-14 Thread Les Kalmus
I have tried printing 5160 labels from DX4win 7.02 on several printers
and this problem exists with all of them. I made up a custom label
through trial and error and have reasonable results but there is still a
bit of "print creep" from the first to the last label on a sheet. My
dimensions are: Width 2.75; Height 1; Left 1.88; Top .5; Hor Shift .06,
Vert Shift 0. These work on a Canon MP530. The dimensions for a Laserjet
P6 and Laserjet II (which I finally retired) are different from this and
each other. You need to play with your settings until this gets fixed.
You should also try adjusting the font sizes a bit which may help.

Do a search (F8) for QSOs with the UPL CONF flag set to yes. Then

I have the same settings. Also, DTR and RTS both high. Polling 5000 ms.
Works fine under 7.03.16. Used to work fine under earlier versions as

I am going through a MicroHam MicroKeyer but that shouldn't make a

I've selected Ft1000, 4800 Bd and the address is set at 00 (is that correct)

I'm using ver 7.02.15

Any ideas?

F10 actually updates the record for that call and moves to the next record.
Page Up/Down moves back and forth among QSOs with the same call without
updating.
I am using the version prior to the one just released so if there is a
difference it's probably in the new release.
Also, F2 will move to the next QSO in the group and it too does an update
depending on how you have it set in preferences.

Set up several com ports in the MH router. In my case, I use com5, 6, 7, 8.
In the router on the ports tab, select a com port to control the radio
with. I use com5.

Click the set button next to com5 and select the radio from the list.
Assuming the MH cables are connected to the radio, the router should now
be communicating with the radio via the DK.

Once this works, go into preferences in DX4WIN and on the radio tab,
select the radio, then select the same com port you selected in the
router, i.e. com5.
For your radio, I believe you must select 4800 as the baud rate. You
will have to play with the DTS/RTS setting, but I think checking high
for both may work.

What you will have done is set up the radio to be controlled by your
Digi Keyer by setting up the MH router.
You will have also set up the DK to be controlled by DX4WIN. DX4WIN will
think it's connected to an actual com port when it is really connected
to a software port in the MH router. The commands it gives to and
receives from the radio are actually coming from the router which
interprets all that stuff and talks to the radio which thinks its
talking to the software.

Sound complex but it's not once you get the hang of it.

Hi All

Yes I dont have the radio connected as most said connect it and
this goes away.

I dont have the radio connected because i also use and have connected
to the radio a Digi Keyer by microham

seeing the radio a ft1000mp has only one serial port (cat input)
I have no idea on how to also connect the radio to the only cat input.

Anyone using a micro ham interface and dx4win.???

I'd be interested in how you have it all connected

As always Thanks to the people who took the time to try out my problem
and reply.!

Hams helping Hams is what its about

[Dx4win] Telnet via Cable Modem Timeout

2002-07-18 Thread Les Kalmus
Try adding the PC with the Telnet session to the DMZ of the Linksys.
This worked for me with a DSL connection that would drop after 15 minutes-4
hours. Now it stays up 1-2 days.

[Dx4win] shut down issue

2003-12-16 Thread Les Kalmus
Eric,

Make sure you are clicking on the main DX4Win window, not just the file
window.

Try this: Click anywhere on the main window and type Alt-F4. This is the
same as clicking on the x but without using the mouse.

If it still hangs it is probably a windows problem. 95 and even 98SE
have closedown problems due to IRQ and other conflicts. Make sure your
version of SE is up to date by going to Microsoft.com and downloading
the upgrades.

I am running the same combo and have no problems. BTW, the PC is an old
133 and is dedicated to DX4Win so if you have lots of other stuff going
on, you may want to carefully review your setup.

Subject: [Dx4win] shut down issue

Folks,

I have a feeling that this is a windows issue, but maybe someone has
seen/solved it?

Running W98SE, and DX4WIN ver 6.02, When I close DX4WIN by clicking on
the x
in the upper right corner, only the W1EL.dxl file closes, DX4WIN stays
open,
but the mouse is locked up. ctrl-alt-del is the only way I can get the
thing
shut down.

Used to be: I could close everything by clicking on the x in the upper
right.

Any Thoughts?

Bets regards from snowy maine. Eric W1EL
