[Dx4win] LOTW issue - DXCC QSL Download and importing problem

2017-05-01 Thread kurt
Greetings all;
So I'm not sure if this has been addressed, I'm sure it has so pardon
me if this is redundant. I am trying to update DX4WIN with my DXCC QSL
Card Report file (adi). I am getting a very high number of entries in
the .notfound file. It appears the reason is the QSL information in the
adi file is missing the time stamp. Therefore these entries do not
match up.

I was hoping to utilize this feature with the hope the DXCC award
status would be updated in DX4WIN. Now I'm sure the problem exists
between the seat and the keyboard so what am I doing wrong? Is
there a way to import this file to get the QSO's to match my log and
update the information for me?

[Dx4win] Yaesu FT-920 - 30m configuration

2017-06-06 Thread kurt
Greetings all;
Not sure if this was addressed however when ever I click on a 30m CW
spot the MODE of the radio will often switch to USB. Is there some way
I can correct this? I seem to recall revising a rig file to handle
this. However that s a far distant memory.

Look forward to your response.

[Dx4win] CPU Usage

2008-03-04 Thread Kurt Zimmerman
Here is something to take into consideration when
dealing with overall performance issues with anyone's
computer/laptop.

First, some background. I've been servicing computers
for quite a number of years now, regardless of the
fact that I've been in IT for 28 years. I have seen
first hand that machines will slow down for any one or
more reasons. In general:

1) Corrupted OS due to viruses/spyware
2) extra garbage in registry
3) disk fragmentation
4) not enough system resources (memory/disk)

I will take these one at a time:

1) If you spend more than 30 seconds on the internet
chances are you may get infected with viruses/spyware.
These tend to cause all sorts of performance issues.
Make sure you are running good AV/AS software. Also,
DON'T OVER-PROTECT yourself. Often times I've seen
people put 2 or 3 AV/AS software programs "just to be
safe". This can cause major performance issues. You
can run a free scan/cleaning from www.ewido.com.
Works very good for free!

2) If you are like me, there are many times where I've
installed/un-installed/reinstalled all sorts of stuff.
The uninstallers are not that good and will keep
things in your system registry. There are 2 utilities
that I use that cleans most of that mess up. Registry
Mechanic and CCleaner. Download these and run them
often to tidy things up.

3) Disk fragmentation comes from every day use. If
you go into Windows Explorer and find your C: drive,
right mouse click C: drive/left mouse click on
Properties, then left mouse click on the Tools tab
then left mouse click on Defragment Now. This process
take quite a bit of time but is worth it in the long
run.

4) System resources. First hard disk space. Make
sure you have not used more than 70% of your HDD
space. Clean out temp files and other non-essential
files. Second memory. If you are running Windows XP
your system will be happy with at least 1 gb of
memory. Windows Vista is best running at 2gb of
memory. If you have less memory your machine spends a
lot of time memory/disk thrashing as in runs slow!

I have been running DX4WIN for quite a number of years
(probably going on 10). It is a very stable system
and will perform with the least amount of system
resources. It is up to you to keep a good home for
your version of DX4WIN. If it is a mess then don't
expect miracles.

I use the N3FJP contest programs here. I have no trouble importing the logs
to DX4WIN. While in the contest program, export it to ADIF format first.
Then import that file to DX4WIN using the ADIF format import.

The ADIF file for the contest will be in "programs/international dx 2.7/"

Here is a quick tip when installing a new printer.
Start by plugging in the printer without loading all
that crap. Just install the print driver from the CD
(after stopping the start-up wizard). This way you
only install the driver and no additional stuff.
Makes for a much cleaner installation. BTW, this goes
true with digital cameras as well. If you don't want
the "proprietary editing studio" and just want the
driver, install it the same way.

OK, John.

Well, I've only been using Winkey sparingly in conjunction with N4PY's
keyboard contained in his Orion interface program. I did use it briefly
with DX4WIN's keyboard and it worked fine.

I agree with you on the printer software overload not to mention
scanners, etc. I usually load them and then immediately remove the
stuff that I don't want.

[Dx4win] Program Lock ups

2008-03-11 Thread Kurt Zimmerman
Bill;
FYI Norton Internet Security 2008 IS NOT THE BEST
form of protection you could be using. Check to see
if there was a recent update to Norton.

I have seen hundreds of problems using Norton. This
may not be your issue but it should be a simple one to
determine. I have seen Norton corrupt itself when it
loads updates.

If you are sure it isn't Norton then run a simple
battery of routine diags on your machine.

If you would like additional information send me a
separate private email.

Re: [Dx4win] How do you un-associate a file

2008-06-23 Thread Kurt Zimmerman
So if you really want to "un-associate" the .tcp file you would hold the SHIFT
key down then right mouse click on the file. Select "Open With" and change the
file association.

As Aln pointed out WHY? Notepad is about as thin & easy to edit the .tcp file.

Re: [Dx4win] Problems opening up Help file in 7.05 ?

2008-10-23 Thread Kurt Zimmerman
OK, after seeing that this might be a shortcut problem you will want to double
check 2 things. First look at the properties in the shortcut to see where the
"start in" setting is. Make sure it is where the executable is located.
Second check to see if a "compatibility mode" is set. If it is it shouldn't.

That is about all I can offer at this time. Hope this helps.

Right-click on the DX4WIN program icon and choose "Run as
Administrator".  This should allow the program to copy the driver
file.

Remember, version 6.0x came out many years before Vista and Windows 7.
If you need LPT keying, you're best off upgrading to DX4WIN 8.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN 7.03 is running on Windows Vista

2007-08-07 Thread Kurt Zimmerman
Hi Jim;
Thanks for sharing your experience with 64-bit
Vista. My night job I spend a lot of time installing
& configuring Vista workstations and have experienced
much the same as what you described with drivers (or
lack there of).
Deep dark little secret about specs for running
Vista, you will notice the hardware requirements have
been pushed up. Although Microsoft claims that Vista
was a complete OS overhaul it still is a very "fat" OS
and requires a more robust machine to do it's thing.
Vista Basic requires 512m of memory. I've configured
quite a few of "low end" machines and have found it
isn't worth the time and effort. I'm seeing lots of
memory upgrades from 1g to 2g just to get something
that runs reasonable.

I'm also seeing a lot of XP downgrades because of
the issues & problems with Vista.

Keep us posted on any further progress.

[Dx4win] Problem with Windows Vista

2007-02-01 Thread Kurt Zimmerman
There may be issues with a number of older windows
applications. Being a long time applications
programmer I did manage to come across this on the
Microsoft website.

While we have made tremendous investments in Windows
Vista to ensure backwards compatibility, some of the
system enhancements, such as User Access Control,
changes to the networking stack, and the new graphics
model, make Windows Vista behave differently from
previous versions of Windows.

Hope this helps.

George, are you running 7.01 or 7.02? I thought this was fixed in 7.02.

If you send me your .DXL and lotwreport.adi files, I can look into creating a
work-around for this. I need the .DXL file from *before* you tried to import
the lotwreport.adi.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN running under Linux

2005-04-19 Thread Kurt W. Zimmerman
Good day all;
I was kind of watching this thread for a while but didn't have much
interest until a friend of mine mentioned he'd like to look for something
running under Linux. I've checked the archive and didn't see much on this
thread. I'd like to hear from those who have tried this under win4lin. I'd
like to hear the good vs. evil on this.

    Thanks in advance.

[Dx4win] Backups

2005-12-19 Thread Kurt W. Zimmerman
Greetings all;
Now from being from the old school of computer programming what I
would do is simply write a batch command file that copies off the
appropriate directories/files either to another place on my machine or to
another machine on my workgroup. Once I feel that the batch file works
properly I would then schedule the batch file to run using the AT batch
scheduler which has been a part of Windows right from the very beginning.

You can tell I grew up in the DOS world... almost becoming a lost
art. Just an FYI, I have a similar job that runs to copy files off a LINUX
box to my personal laptop at 3:00 am (uses FTP... another standard offering
in Windows). Job has been running without a hitch for several months now.

I am sure there are third party solutions that will do the same
thing. Once a programmer always a programmer...

Good luck with it.

I have written on this subject several times. I have been using Iomega
Automatic Backup for years, but I understand there are other cheaper (free)
solutions. You want something that backs up in the background, either at
regular intervals or every time the file changes. You don't want to have to
rely on a button you push yourself, unless you are highly disciplined.

Hi all,
We all know the importance of backing dada up, I use a USB stick to back
up DX4WIN for example. Does any one know of a utility that will
automatically back up date from various directories to another network
computer? I am thinking of save directory from DX4WIN plus dada
directories from other programs? (comps on XP)

[Dx4win] Old logs

2005-01-30 Thread Kurt W. Zimmerman
I found it easier to save the data out as a fixed record length instead of a
comma delimited file. This way the import feature for DX4WIN can easily
define the record, mapping each of the columns to the appropriate data
element.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi Paul,

Excel can import DBase format data.
You could then export in .csv format or ASCII fixed column format and then
import directly into Dx4win.

[Dx4win] Upload to LotW

Subject: [Dx4win] Upload to LotW

Gosh this is frustrating! There must be an easier way to do this.
DX4Windows doesn't explain why it won't create a file for me. All of the
upload flags are marked Y. Here is a little history.

I created an ADIF file but it had an error in it that I didn't realize
existed. When I was signing the file with TQsl it flagged the error which
was PSK and should have been CW. Then I tried to fix it but TQSL didn't
like the fix.

I then erased the file and went back to DX4Windows and fixed the QSO that
was in error. I then tried to create another LOTW export and it won't go.
All I did was change a QSO from PSK mode to CW mone and now DX4Windows
won't export the file for LOTW. I have NO idea why DX4Windows won't export
these QSOs. It did it the first time but it wont do it again.

Any ideas?

Kenth, that doesn't work for me. You must be using a custom label
setup. I'm using a standard 8160 and the dimensions, etc. are fixed.

However, I did play around and by selecting custom label 1 and printing;
then returning to 8160, I was able to print normally without the counter
showing up. Why this worked, I have no idea. I'll see if it continues
to work.

Paul, is there a bug somewhere?

WSJT-X is then the only program running with the rig.

Every other function of DX4WIN still works (other than rig access) and WSJT-X

To each his own but this works for me.

My station is DX4Win with an Icom 7600 and 7700. I too would like to run
WSJT at the same time as DX4Win. I see the previous references to Yaesu's
Win4yaesusuite but didn't bother because I see nothing to tell me this software
will work with Icom.

I have also followed the suggestion to look at N6TV's latest on comports, page
61 where he talks about comport sharing. He suggests VE3NEA's OmniRig
software, but says this is not supported by N1MM and others. Apparently DX4Win
is one of the others. I looked at the OmniRig documentation; DX4Win is not
included in the list of compatible logging software.

So-Help anyone? Does anyone have the Yaesu suite or the OmniRig solution
working with DX4Win/WSJT and Icom combination?

Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win Conflict with WSJT

2024-02-22 Thread Kurt Zimmerman - W2MW

Let us know how it works out Jerry.

Some background I am a DX4WIN user for well over 20 years. About 2
years ago I put my big toe into FT8.  For the past 2 years I have worked
more Q's than I did on phone & CW since I was licensed back in 1987.  I
was really disappointed that DX4WIN did not have a direct interface with
WSJT-X much like a number of other logging programs.  Also, I started
gaining interest in POTA, Parks On The Air.  I wanted a logging program
that could handle SSB, CW & Digital.  So I purchased another logging
program to do just that.

From time to time I will import the log from the other logging program
into DX4WIN as another repository for my logs.

Personally speaking and coming from a almost 50 year software developer,
I think there are several enhancements that DX4WIN can benefit from.

1)    WSJT-X direct interface logging
2)    Auto-upload of Q's to a number of on-line QSL services including
LOTW, QRZ, HamLog, eQSL

I will always be a strong supporter of DX4WIN and continue to upgrade to
the latest version.  It certainly has the best interface out of all of
the logging programs I've used.

Paul should provide a direct way to import WSJT-X QSOs into
DX4WIN.  We have been asking for this feature for years.  The
simplest solution would be to use UDP broadcast functions that are
already supported in WSJT-X and other loggers such as N1MM.  It is
a shame that Paul will not address this

As less elegant solution would be to provide a one key ability to
initiate a manual import of the WSJT-X file into DX4WIN. In
Preferences, we should be able to specify the location of the
WSJT-X log file.   We should then be able to specify a hotkey that
will initiate a direct import, but this would involve importing
the entire log file from WSJT-X and ignoring duplicates.  This
poor man's version would at least eliminate the need for key mappers.

The best solution is for Paul to provide the automatic import of
each QSO as it is logged in WSJT-X via UDP broadcasts. This
feature works beautifully between WSJT-X and N1mm and many other
general logging programs

To log WSJT-X contacts into DX4WIN:

I am using a separate program called Macro Recorder.

What it does is create a Macro that records all the moves one has
to take to manually import the WSJT-X Log into DX4WIN.

Once that is done (the creation of a specific Macro) it takes no
more than a few seconds to import into DX4WIN.

I have one button on the keyboard (in my case the UP button) that
activates the specific macro. You can see all the "moves" of the
mouse and the various windows as it runs through the steps to
process it (importing the WSJT-X log into DX4WIN).

Again, this all happens within a few seconds with one push of the
UP button.

[Dx4win] FT-920 CW interface

2002-07-31 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Just an FYI folks.. First I want to say thanks for all of those who
provided me comments on CW keying. After spending a bit of time with
things I decided to use the LPT port instead of the serial port. After a
few bucks worth of parts I am a happy CW operator.

One nit that I found. I found that I have to disable the Keyer when using
the keyboard. I'm not sure I like that idea. Therefore if I want to go
back to the paddle I have another button push. I think this issue is the
radio and not the program.

[Dx4win] FT-920 CW interface

2002-08-01 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Greetings all;
Well, for those of you who have the FT-920 you are in luck. There is a
switch on the back of the radio right next to the Key jack. It is listed
as PDL-KEY. Here is what I did based upon another member of this
reflector. First, connect the computer interface to the rear key jack.
Second switch the PDL-KEY switch to KEY. Finally connect my paddle to the
front key jack. Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too It works!!
I can key the rig with the computer without having to switch off the
KEYER. I can use the paddle at the same time.
I'm a happy camper and now ready to fully utilize my system.

Hi,

You have to have an external keyer for this to work (the internal keyer
goes
nuts and really isn't that good anyway) and then just change the switch and
use the jack in the back of the radio. I have used my 920 that way for 2
years and no problems...It's a Yaesu thing unfortunately.

I run the CW window using V5.03 and have it operate through the LPT1 - and
it works fine - no conflicts.

[Dx4win] DX Spoting Window

2002-12-15 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Greetings all;
This subject might have been addressed before but I think it is worth
mentioning again. I run a utility called Dimension 4. You can find it at
http://www.thinkman.com/dimension4/index.html .. Since your logging
software runs off the system clock, this utility keeps your system clock in
sync with a time standard available on the internet. One assumes that you
machine is on the internet (dialed up, DSL or cable) when operating. This
way, you know you are going to be only a few milliseconds off the time
standard. Now if everyone syncs their clock off a time standard we
wouldn't have any problems. Hope this helps.

[Dx4win] CW keying and the IC 706 MKIIG

2002-12-23 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Greetings all and Happy Holidays;
I've been spending some quality time with my IC 706MKIIG since it is
the
only spare radio I have to use at my new station. I've investigated the
computer controlled interface I need to control the rig and found some
great resources on the internet thanks to many members of this group. I am
now interested in searching out CW keying. Now here is what I want to do
and I am wondering if it can be done. On my primary radio (Yaesu FT-920) I
can operate CW from my computer using DX4WIN as well as operate with my
paddle. Is there a way to do the same with the IC-706? I would think the
cable I use from the LPT port to key the rig would work but I would like to
use my paddle at the same time. Do I need to use an external keyer with my
paddle and use a Y-cable from it to the rig? I would like to see if there
are other possibilities before I go this route. Please advise.

[Dx4win] Some odd things with PSK31 and WINNT 4.1

2002-07-11 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Greetings all;
I have been using DX4WIN v. 5.03 for quite some time on my COMPAQ
Armada
7800, 128m ram, 333mhz processor. I just recently started using the PSK31
feature in DX4WIN. I have had a problem where by the PSK31 display would
freeze up when trying to transmit. The odd thing about it would be that
I'd transmit a few times successfully, then about the 3rd or 4th transmit,
the rig would be in TRANSMIT mode and the waterfall display and spectrum
display would freeze up. If I close the PSK31 display, then reopen it, I
would get the following error:

Error starting soundcard. Device already started.

Once I clicked on TX twice, I found that closing the PSK31 window and
reopening it restores normal operation.

Anyone have the same type of problem? BTW, I've tried other PSK31
interfaces and they seem to work without problems. Any thoughts would be
greatly appreciated.

Don't know abt the DX4WIN version, but some other pgms
sometimes crash if you don't turn off Windows' sounds first. Go to
Control Panel and turn off Sounds, then click Apply. See if that
does the trick.

Your main log file must be OPEN to be able to IMPORT. I get the same results if
I do not open a main log file (where all of your QSO's are or going to be). In
other words, the program won't allow you to import if you have not defined where
you are going to be importing the log to.

[Dx4win] Telnet via Cable Modem Timeout

2002-07-17 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Not really knowing much about the Linksys router, I would seem to think
that you are experiencing a time out instead of loosing track of the telnet
session. You should have some user-definable parameters in any router to
allow you to change and/or configure timeouts.

I would not give up all hope on the Linksys router until it has been fully
explored. Mind you, most of the folks on tech-support help desks don't
always have the answers. I've found that out from personal experience.

Subject:Re: [Dx4win] Telnet via Cable Modem Timeout

Hi Alan,

I just read your note today. I have had this same problem ever since going
to a
cable modem over a year ago. My telnet sessions would drop anywhere from 2
hours to 10 hours after they were set-up. The sessions were not just to
DXClusters that had the problem. I use telnet to other systems such as
routers
and Linux machines. They all had the same problem.

I have a Linksys router with the 4 port switch. In the past I have tried
calling Linksys tech support and also have loaded every new version of code
that
was released, hoping that they might just fix it, even if it were
inadvertent.
Their support is just plain awful if not just plain pathetic.

What proved to me that it was the Linksys was when I replaced it with a
Cisco
806. The dropped sessions stopped. I have had sessions up for a week plus
with
no drops. It is pretty clear to me that the Linksys is loosing track of
the
telnet session somehow.

The answer may not be that you need a Cisco router. I have never tried any
of
the other brands out there like D-Link, etc. They may not have this
problem.

[Dx4win] Telnet via Cable Modem Timeout

2002-07-18 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
If you read the RFP on DHCP, you will find that as long as the IP is active
that it will get renewed during its half-life of the lease. So if you have
an expiration of 2 hours, your IP will be "renewed" every hour.

I'm not sure this is obviously the router. Cable modem systems can be set
up ("provisioned" is the weird word they use, I guess from telephone-speak)
in a number of different ways. At least in theory, the one I'm on grants a
set-duration "lease" of an IP address. There was briefly a time where it
would drop every 2 hours regularly as clockwork, but that stopped fairly
quickly and now I keep the same IP address. I *think* the system is
automatically renewing my lease every two hours...

As for the support, I couldn't agree more. Once in a while you get someone
who knows his or her stuff, but it's rare. I've found one such guy now and
learned a "back way" to get to him. It makes things a lot better.

The best way to keep you network connection up and if you isp provides your
email, is to set the auto check for new email to the lowest value. I
believe MS outlook and express can be set to one minute intervals.
This at least keep the circuit up, and let's the ISPs know that your
connection is very active. They probably don't monitor telent activity, but
I bet there is sometype of keep alive the connection if the email is check
in these minimal check periods.

Anyway it worth a try.

[Dx4win] Upgrading to XP?

2002-07-30 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Actually DOS is not really "gone". One has to understand the architecture
of XP, Win2K as well as WinNT4. They are much the same. DOS as well as
the 16 bit runtime run as "sub-systems". This has been true with XP and
its predecessors. Chances are that DOS will never go away because there
are too many things tied to the DOS sub-system that makes it almost
impossible to get rid of.

As for accessing things like modems, soundcards or other devices all
depends on how the sub-system has been designed to access them.

But, for now, with the risk of getting into a long boring diatribe on this,
lets just say it's not worth getting into However, the older DOS
programs should be able to access these devices.

73;
Kurt - W2MW

XP is an evolution of WIN2000 and WIN98 and doesn't "really" have DOS. XP
and WIn2000 have a Command Prompt (C:> prompt), and certain old DOS
commands
are still available, but I doubt you could count on "old" ham programs that
utilize anything very special, e.g. soundcard, to work under XP. This is
why RITTY/K6STI won't run under WIN2000 Command Prompt.

If you're still tied into DOS, stick with WIN98. Someday you will want to
move up though, so be thinking about saying bye bye to DOS! ;-)

Might want to double check the 1000MP rear panel again. Let me know what

Larry, that is OK if your paddles are connected to an external keyer. The
LPT output should go to a manual key input, i.e. you can't attach that to a
paddle input to an internal keyer.

I've seen a lot of people use a Y connector from their rig's mono key
input,
one side to their computer and the other side to the output of an external
keyer. GL - 73 John, WA9ALS

[Dx4win] setting filter

2002-08-31 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
Is there a simple way to set a filter to identify those QSO's marked as
"Mailed"? Thanks.

[Dx4win] Can it be the 60m mod

2003-07-05 Thread <[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kurt W. Zimmerman)
I just recently performed the modification to my Yeasu FT 920 to operate on
60m. All things seemed to be working just fine until I ran DX4WIN. Here
is the problem I face. I find a 17m CW spot. I click on the spot and the
radio responds, correct band/mode changes however the mode and band on the
QSO window starts at 17m CW then switches to 20m SSB. Something is
confused and I think it might be the radio.

I'm just wondering if this is the infamous EPROM corruption that I've seen
on the reflector lately.

If anyone has seen this and might have resolved this please let me know.
