[e-gold-list] first transaction, and thoughts on auto-verification

Well, I'm not inclined to brag but Jim Ray seems to want to give a gram
to the earliest batch number, so here's mine:

10/29/97 20:20 InExchange
Batch #595
Gold +0.936680 300.00 USD

Having not posted for a while I don't want to just post this useless
batch number but instead I'll write some thoughts about automatic
payment verification.

Related to the posting of batch numbers, there's no automatic way to
verify that I'm not lying. I could tell e-gold that I approve that
they release the transaction history for this one transaction
(according to the user agreement), but that would have to be manually
done by e-gold staff (I guess Jay would pgp-sign an e-mail to the list
including the above information). I could write a program to verify
it using the automation interface, but it would require my passphrase
as input. I guess e-gold could make an extension where I could mark
any transaction as public, then anyone could verify it through some
interface (a web page, or the check history part of the automation
interface) without my passphrase.

Anyone interested in creating an Internet Gold that is completely
transparent, where anyone could verify that a certain payment has
taken place, or maybe even all transactions are public (but not
necessarily identified)? I can see such a system having specialized
uses (reputation building for one), not conflicting with existing
Internet Gold systems where the transaction history is private. Or
there could be a public registry of transactions, which may be from
different currency systems, but with an automated way for them to be
verified (digital signature on the transaction by the issuer).

On a more commerical note, is anyone interested in third-party
verification of SCI payments? Does anyone offer this service?

Technical stuff below (I'd post it to the e-gold-tech list, but it
relates directly to what I wrote above):

You'd give me [the third party] the hash of your merchant passphrase,
and point your STATUS_URL to my server (instead of, say, a mailto:
link). Then instead of getting e-mail from e-gold that you have to
paste into the md5 checker page (or login to your account and check
history), I'd have my [the third party would have their] server check
the MD5 for you and if it is valid, e-mail you or store the
transaction in a database.

The third party could almost publish the payment for public
verification, except for the need for the hash of the merchant
passphrase (which is supposed to be secret).

yet appeared. Whois says:

Apologies for this awful-looking URL, but I thought it might interest those
here. A billion is a thousand-million, and I have trouble imagining numbers
that large. Ten billion dollars, according to the article, is something like
1,200 billion yen. One of you can probably illustrate this in some way I can
grasp (level teaspoons-full of water in an Olympic size swimming pool?).

Thanks if you can, a gram of e-gold goes to the best/funniest illustration.

If you bought 10 billion dollars worth of gold, melted it down and poured
it into an Olympic-sized swimming pool, the gold would be 12 centimeters
high.

Calculation:

Pool is 50x10 meters in area, or 5,000,000 square cm. The density of gold
is 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter. One centimeter of height would
contain 5,000,000*19.3 = 96,500,000 grams of gold.

10,000,000,000 dollars at 1 gram per 8.6 dollars
= 1,162,790,697.7 grams

1,162,790,697.7 grams / 96,500,000 grams per cm height
= 12.049644537 cm

If the price went up to 300 USD/oz you could only fill the pool 10cm
high with gold [similar calculation].

In addition you could fill up the pool and overflow the 1 meter mark by
3.6269430051 cm if you had 10 billion grams. Calculation: Olympic pools
would be 1 meter deep if they hold 500,000 Liters as another poster
claimed. 10,000,000,000 grams / 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter *
5,000,000 cubic centimeters per cm of height = 103.6269430051 centimeters
high of gold.

just my cubic millimeters' worth

Actually, I was not complaining about this machine; it is capable of

As a technical person I believe your web page (www.gaithmans.com) uses too
many nested tables (I count 7 levels deep!) which will cause it to
render slowly on many web browsers, even on high-end systems. If you ask
an experienced web designer they should be able to optimize your page to
load faster (in fact, it could be done to look exactly the same, but using
less nested tables). I'm just afraid you will lose customers, as 10seconds
is the limit of most users' attention spans.

For that matter, why have different rates for higher amounts? The ONLY

do not depend on the length of time that 1mdc has e-gold in its account.
In fact, ads would make more money if the term was shorter since people

The only thing I can think of, is you don't want every single e-gold

seems to do the same thing, at the bottom is a form for former
customers of Mr. Cloos. Rick van Rein [EMAIL PROTECTED] is
  the proprietor.

I just tried this link but I'm not sure if it worked because it said No
recipient addresses found in header at the top of the page showing an
e-mail that was supposedly sent to initiate the change.

Rick van Rein has promptly fixed the problem I had with the form. I added
a link to Van Rein Domains to my e-gold directory.

I also had a good experience using Metal-Exchange instant metal-to-metal
exchange today, and have added a link to this great site by Sidd.

Understandably, from a marketing perspective, the easier the system is to
use, the more people will use it. However, e-gold and others will have
difficulty attracting serious commercial customers until they provide a
truly secure payment system. To get people off credit cards, you have to
provide something that is BETTER than credit cards. Presently e-gold is
about equal to credit cards in terms of security, and somewhat better in
terms of non-repudiability. However, as Costa Gold and other examples have
shown, even e-gold isn't really non-repudiable. If they think a transaction
is fraudulent they will freeze it, so it isn't really like cash.

Costa Gold is not an example of repudiability. A repudiation requires
that some money be given back to someone, without consent of the payee. I
do not think that happened.

E-gold will not freeze accounts except in case of a court order. Value
limits may be placed for any reason or no reason.

E-gold is not supposed to be like cash (anonymous, untraceable), and no
one claimed that it is.

I have made a new e-gold directory that fits a lot of links on one page.
Let me know what you think:
