Is this real, or hoax as I believe. Would love to read the e-gold comment
 on following:

1)
designed by a ex-e-gold programmer

anyone that i know of that could try and legitimately
claim that label has better english language skills
than the putative author.

2)
e-gold Ltd. abides by its User Agreement which, in part, says
3.7.3. Issuer will not store Passphrase in plaintext
i.e. there is no Passphrase to retrieve and display.

3)
advice: users should not run questionable executable
programs on their computer as doing so is a quick way to
install a virus.

4)
I will receive an enormous amount of recognition.
not posting your name and hosting at a free website is
a fantastic step in that direction. ;)

5)
users that find any bugs using e-gold tend to receive
rewards from e-gold for reporting them. send bug reports
to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

so in my judgment this is a hoax. letting me know the
passphrase to e-gold account 100998 would be a step
towards convincing me otherwise.

small issue, but eventually the 31 should be deleted as a
 choice in the calendar.

hi ragnar,

possibly some client-side javascript could modify the day dropdown
list to only contain legitimate days for the currently selected year
and month. that pretty much forces you to choose year and month before
seeing a correct list of days. the counter argument then would be
'hey, i don't see 31 in the list of days and i know there are 31 days
next month' - but that argument does seem slightly weaker to me. i
have seen some sites that have a pretty little grid calendar to click
on for date selection, but that takes up a little more screen real
estate.
consider your suggestion taken in for mulling.

2003-10-01 Thread jrw
these units seem a bit far from real life. I think that

hi jens,
isn't it strange that scientific units like grams seem
that way, yet fiat units like dollars don't!

decigrammes or even centigrammes? Has anybody ever thought
 about this?

i have heard/seen people use 'milligrams' when talking
about small quantities of e-gold. maybe the suggestion
would be to add these fractional gram amounts to the
e-gold spend units dropdown list...

thought of coming up with a cool sign for gold units, like

omnipay.com has an interesting symbol (a little work and you can
figure out its derivation), though not directly representing any
units that i know of. e-gold Ltd. came up with the three letter
codes such as AUG to indicate grams of gold - along the lines
of an ISO currency code.

you might try one of the services listed noted here:

which means the e-gold site is at the top of the list for

[e-gold-list] movies starring 400 oz. bricks...

here's one i just caught:

_The Day They Robbed the Bank of England_ (1960)

enjoyable B/W fictional heist set in 1901 London.
nice vault scenes - lots of 400 ounce bars lying about.
it sure took a lot of bars in those days to total up to
a million pounds sterling!

http://us.imdb.com/Title?0053752

possibly built up around this legend:
http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/museum/walkthrough/stories3.asp

more on victorian BofE:
http://www.victorianlondon.org/finance/bankofengland.htm

(peter o'toole (bank guard finch) was spotted by david lean
in this movie prior to his _lawrence of arabia_ casting)

enjoy!

of particular interest to SSL secure site (such as e-gold.com) users

the notice gives a workaround of Disable Active Scripting, which

[e-gold-list] Re: IMPORTANT QUESTION

2003-07-11 Thread jrw
I would like to know if you have any way to setup a script or already have
 one who does the following:

Verifies that the batch # and amount spent matches the e-gold account
number where the spend was made.

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

hi joey,

you can always log in and look at your e-gold account history by batch
number to see the payment details.

there is an example perl script for getting e-gold history on the
Developer Information page linked to from the e-gold home page.

if you are accepting payment via the e-gold SCI, you can process the
payment notification in your STATUS_URL CGI to verify the authenticity
of the contents using the V2_HASH mechanism. section 3.8 of the e-gold
SCI specification has some guidelines to keep in mind when performing
this verification.

feel free to address any e-gold programming questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2003-06-28 Thread jrw
Danny,

how did 7.2% of 40kg get to be 28.8kg?

or are you saying the other 90% of the company gets 7.2% dividend? why?

It's easier to calculate it in gold grams.
They are raising 40 kg of gold in selling 10% of their company to the
public, and at the same time they declare a dividend of 7.2% anually, which
means they will be paying out 28.8 kg of gold in dividends every year.

That's why from an economic point of view this ipo doesn't make any sense.
The money they are raising will be gone into dividend payments after only 17
months, it's hardly possible the 40 kg gold they get now will have produced
much of a positive return within only 17 months.

[e-gold-list] recent discussions - need a summary

2003-06-26 Thread jrw
can someone condense the recent spread arguments down to a
sentence or paragraph?

am i right in thinking everyone thinks exchangers should have
a spread between bid and ask, but are discussing how that
spread should be centered?

lets say i went to kitco.com just now and decided to buy some
gold...they quote a spot price of $346USD/XAU, looks like i
could get a 10oz bar at $358USD/XAU, some Krugerrands at $353USD/XAU,
or into their **unallocated** pool account at $347.5USD/XAU. i could
sell the same things back at $338USD/XAU, $338USD/XAU, $344USD/XAU.
those are spreads of 5% (+3% -2%), 4% (+2%, -2%), 1% (+.4%, -.6%).
i go over to OmniPay.com and check things out...they quote a spot
price of $346.5USD/XAU, buy at $353USD/XAU and sell to them at
$340USD/XAU - a spread of 4% (+2%, -2%).
(forgot to mention, i also pay shipping and insurance using kitco,
so add in say $100 USD on a 50 XAU buy).

it looks to me like getting the useful stuff called e-gold
at OmniPay is competitive with getting/sending a heavy package
from/to kitco? can someone give me a real-world counter example?

thanks,

thanks, JP - you're saying it's a perception thing right?

skip ahead 20 years...

the world's economy is handled using various forms of
electronic gold. just about everyone uses it. however
there are a few oddballs out there - they use this currency
call FReNs. (the majority call them Note-bugs.) there is a service
where you can own FReNs. however, since most of the world uses
gold, the FReN service lets you denominate your spends in grams
of gold, and maintains a spot price in AUG / 10,000 FReNs.
there are a few businesses that will actually exchange
to/from your FReNs for real money (gold).
there is an argument amongst these businesses...which is better...
should we buy the FReNs at spot, or should we buy at spot
less a few percent?
there is this old bald rich paunchy dude, JMR, that argues the
latter - thats how its been done for eons! there is this older
more rich less paunchy dude JPM that argues the former - the
FReN newbies expect to get spot! and then there is this other dude
that explains how in 20 years we'll still be arguing about it. ;)

i think there are at least 4 public gold list archives out there, most
of which do some obfuscation of source email address, but an industrious individual
could certainly reconstruct subscriber addresses. but there
are almost certainly harvesters subscribed to all the lists, so the public

the source of spam is not e-mail lists, it is spammers. IMO, removing one

tools from the community.

several of the bayesian spam filters do a real good job, the one i
use is correctly identifying spam ~90+% of the time. i find that

hi danny,

i think you describe a 3rd party e-gold escrow system perfectly well! the
community needs such a system - go for it! (or get escrow.com to accept
e-gold as one of their payment mechanisms.)

however, when you repudiate an online payment you deny making it. by
repudiating a payment you attest to never having made it in the first
place. (i.e. you claim it as fraudulently initiated).
in your example, no one ever denies making a payment - i.e.
there is no repudiation. it is an escrow system, that in fact relies on
the underlying *non-reputability* of the payment system being used.
if you change your wording to not use repudiate/repudiation and switch
over
to escrow based wording i think your example is consistent.

[e-gold-list] Re: theft from e-gold account

2003-03-20 Thread jrw
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

hello,

here are some things to check to see if your computer setup
is secure to some degree:

- - if running windows, do you regularly perform the Windows
Update function to keep updated with latest security
  patches from Microsoft?

- - do you always use a different passphrase at different
  web sites?

- - do you use something other than Microsoft Outlook to
  read email?

- - do you run a virus protection application?

- - do you have a firewall (linksys, d-link etc) between your
computer and your high speed ISP?

- - when entering your e-gold passphrase, do you always verify
the browser location bar starts with https://www.e-gold.com/
and that the lock icon is active?

if you answered no to any of the above, then you are an easier
target to compromise than people that answer yes to every
question. if you have questions as to why each of the above
is important feel free to post or ask in private email.

Just wanted to know whether you gentlemen are aware of
any security issues when accessing E-Gold using the
 WAP phone.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

hi manoj,

here are some resources that give you some background on how
mobile phones secure their connection to SSL web sites. jim
is basically right - there is a decrypt/reencrypt step inside
a phone provider gateway.

http://www.tdap.co.uk/uk/archive/billing/bill(phonecom_9912).html
http://www.advisor.com/Articles.nsf/aid/MIKAP001

the reason for this is SSL is (or at least was) too resource
intensive to use natively in phones, so the WTLS/HDTP methods
are used by WAP/HDML capable phones.

by default, phone access is disabled for an e-gold account.

[e-gold-list] new: quickly accept e-gold payments

2003-02-17 Thread jrw
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

a new shortcut method to accept e-gold payments is available
to e-gold account holders. any e-gold account holder can now
use a link similar to:

http://100998.e-gold.com

this example allows e-gold account 100998 to accept 2 centigram
gold payments.

further parameters can be added to accept different amounts
and e-metals. for example:

http://100998-USD25.50-Silver.e-gold.com

sends the payer to an e-gold payment screen ready to make a
payment of 25.50 US Dollars worth of e-silver to e-gold account
100998. the default amount is 2 centigrams of gold. use of
additional parameters allows any amount to be accepted.

* * *

an easy way to generate your own link is available at the e-gold
developer page:

http://sci.e-gold.com

* * *

users clicking your shortcut link are taken directly to the e-gold
Shopping Cart Interface (SCI) page where payment can be made. you
(the payee) will receive an automatic email notification when the
payment has been made. the payer can easily return to your web page
containing the link by clicking Continue after making the payment
(or Cancel before making the payment).

[e-gold-list] Re: E-gold SRK Broken

2003-02-02 Thread jrw
hi craig,
possibly some ideas below:

 1) Using 6.0.2800.1106, Cipher Strength 56-bit, Update Versions SP1;
 Q324929:

that 56-bit cipher is a little weak - can you update to full 128-bit?
[shouldn't cause any problem, but why not go full power...]. i just
tried using IE exact same version number (but 128-bit) and worked fine.

Using this version, the SRK refuses to come up and hangs the browser,
 requiring me to kill it.

the SRK is pretty much all client side javascript - suggests some kind
of browser issue. you can also just try pulling up the srk using the
e-gold URL followed by /srk.asp (of course there will be no window it can
insert characters into, but you should at least be able to open it in
your browser - you can try it both http and https to see if that helps
you diagnose issue).

 2) Using Netscape 7.01, everything appears to work, but the SRK box is too
small to accommodate all the numbers and letters, and it can't be stretched.
So, it's effectively useless if I have to select a letter or a number on the
 right side, beyond the edge.

does netscape support the same text size shortcut commands as mozilla? you
might be able to Ctrl- (that's Control key with minus key) to shrink text
and
see all keypads. i'll see if we can get that default size in netscape to
appear more useable. btw, mozilla does let you resize that window.

Anyone else? I use the SRK religiously. I think it's an ingenious tool. I
would hate to see it go. The login works fine when keyed.

in theory, nothing changed even remotely related to the e-gold SRK. i
would
be interested in hearing any other reports of SRK problems.

[e-gold-list] Re: E-gold SRK Broken

2003-02-02 Thread jrw

 1) I login everyday using IE, so it's seems quite a coincidence that it
would stop working immediately after your upgrade.

i guess it is somehow possible, i just have no idea what it could be
at this point. we should be able to tell if others report it as a problem.

 3) I'm not sure how to upgrade IE to 128-bit encryption. I tried searching
the Microsoft site a couple of weeks ago, but could not find it.

i thought any IE6 would be 128-bit, so that is a good question. maybe you
are running under win2k and need this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/encryption/

 4) After logging-in to e-gold, the security level reads 128-bit, green, so I
didn't think it was a problem.

that must be the browser doing SGC or step-up to 128 bit level for certain
sites like the e-gold site. i'd still try and jack that thing up to
128-bits
so you get fullstrength on every site. you can read more about SGC/step-up
here:
http://www.thawte.com/html/RETAIL/sgc/productsheet.html

before you do that, it might be interesting for you to report which
internet gold related secure sites allow you to switch up to 128-bit mode
and which
ones leave you stuck at 56-bit mode :)

The Turing number display used at various passphrase entry points on
the e-gold site has been updated. A different type of grid/noise is
in place now. The new grid/noise pattern is more circular in nature.

along the lines of a market experiment...

i have 5 slashdot moderator points that i will
sell for e-gold.

they expire within about 12 hours, so you'll need
to be quick.

price: .5 grams of gold each

how it works:
1) you find a (or post your own) comment on slashdot,
http://slashdot.org

2) spend the .5 grams of gold,
http://fastsci.com/?1010-.5

3) and send me an email with a link to the comment/story
and what moderation level you'd like applied:
Offtopic, Flamebait, Troll, Redundant, Insightful,
Interesting, Informative, Funny, Overrated, Underrated.

and 4) i'll moderate it as such.

highly moderated comments are seen by many many many
people - that's why this service is (in theory) valuable.

have fun,

see this microsoft link (should be on one line):

it doesn't seem to apply to HTTPS/SSL protected

rule keep your browser patched and up-to-date
per your vendors provisions.

btw, if you're using something like marketscore (nee netsetter)

hi jim,

the spends referred to on the e-gold stats page:

http://stats.e-gold.com

are e-metal payments made. an e-gold account holder can
initiate a payment three ways on the e-gold system:

1. manually thru account manager
2. programmatically via the e-gold automation interface
3. manually via an e-gold shopping cart interface (SCI) checkout

only these transactions are included in the e-metal spends 24 hour

[e-gold-list] a few notes on new access feature

2002-01-09 Thread jrw

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

in case you miss this in the help section for the
newly announced e-gold account access attributes...

with regard to phone access - many phone gateways
*will not* pass thru your mobile phone number as an
identifier for you. with my own phone service, the
identifier is something of the form XX-X
(6 digits hyphen 5 digits). *this* identifier is the
data you can use to restrict access to your individual
mobile phone. how do you know what particular pattern
to use? use your phone to open one of these URLs:

http://pcs.e-gold.com/shownum.asp (pcs/hdml users)
http://mobile.e-gold.com/wml/shownum.asp(wap/wml users)

and you'll see the identifier you can use. some providers
may not present any identifier at all - in that case you
could choose to allow access via any phone/emulator by selecting
the third option for the phone access attribute.

btw, phone users may want to look at
http://pcs.e-gold.com/default.html
using their normal web browser for a chance to earn a bit of gold.

times. Have you added some short time-out that you didn't have
before? This may be good but perhaps I'm a bit slow. I would
prefer it to be a little longer or to have control over it myself.

hi craig,

at least one person experiencing this problem cured
themselves by upgrading their version 5/5.5 Internet
Explorer to the SP2 level. IE users can use
Help - About Internet Explorer
and this page:

support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q164/5/39.ASP

to determine the exact level of IE.

This IE bug:

support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q265/3/69.asp

is corrected in the IE5/5.5 SP2 level. The bug can lead to
quick timeouts when you are logged in. Use IE's Tools - Windows
Update
to upgrade your IE to the SP2 level if the bug seems to apply
to you. I believe there is also a post SP2 patch for IE5.5/6.0
that also should be considered (MS01-58):
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-058.asp

(i'm going to keep trying to sign my posts, but lately it seems that
lyris is somehow munging the sig).

2002-01-01 Thread jrw

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

hello dimitry,

current input boxes for e-gold passphrase login support
32 characters of entry. all of the characters entered must
be correct to login. per the e-gold Account User Agreement at:
http://www.e-gold.com/unsecure/terms.htm

3.7.3. Issuer will not store Passphrase in plaintext.
No employee of Issuer will ever ask for User’s Passphrase.

any upper/lower case a-z, 0-9, and the 30 or so english
punctuation/symbols
found in the first 128 places of the ASCII code are usable within your
e-gold passphrase.

in general:

* a longer passphrase is better than a shorter passphrase
* random content is better than non-random content

thanks for pointing out e-gold's use of the term passphrase
rather than password. your post correctly stated the reasons
for that distinction.

best wishes in 2002,

[e-gold-list] Re: e-gold denominations in Euro

2001-12-02 Thread jrw

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

you guys make some good points regarding the other currencies.
remember that e-gold is transferred by weight, so all the national
currencies are only there for the convenience factor to help fit your
mind around the weight amount you want to transfer. will you DEM and
FRF and ITL users be comfortable with only EUR units or do those
additional choices help you out?

lets have some fun and find out what you want with a little voting:

https://www.e-gold.com/acct/votenow.html

send your reasons to this list via the above page within the next
couple of days.

Aside from that, their representation in the emails sent by the SCI would
be interesting. After all, the SCI now uses the string US$ to describe USD
in the Payment Amount field, so it's not clear what code you will use for
Euro. The informal spelling will be Euro by the way, like US$ for dollars.

that string (US$) is a mistake on our part - the symbols will all be
the ISO three letter currency code. USD, EUR, etc. for any national
currency.

[e-gold-list] Re: mobile payments

2001-10-03 Thread jrw

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

i'll take that one - basically there are two sections
involved in the mobile phone to e-gold web site communication
path, both of which are encrypted to protect the data in transit.

the RF encrypted section will vary in methodology according to
your provider and their gateway capabilities. see this whitepaper
on the security involved in the ATT Pocketnet CDPD data network.
(for what it's worth, i use Pocketnet to access e-gold.)

the other part of the path to the e-gold site will always be
SSL protected and arrives at the e-gold servers just like any
other IP connection to port 443. for most of the wireless providers,
this connection will be coming from the provider's gateway making
a connection on behalf of a particular mobile handset.

the mobile phones i am familiar with provide something similar
to a browser lock icon to indicate secure mode.

there are mobile phone emulators that do support SSL - but to
answer your question, i am not aware of any mobile phones that
perform SSL themselves.

readers unfamiliar with the mobile use of e-gold might want to
take a look at this demonstation:

http://pcs.e-gold.com/demo.html

are you asking how e-gold performs the STATUS_URL notification? or
are
you asking how can you make your PAYMENT_URL page wait for that

your

assuming the former...
e-gold does a form submit just like a browser would. it could do this
many
different ways including cURL, ASPTear, WinInet, Java etc. a
process/task
is fired up to perform that notification upon confirmation of the
e-metal spend by the payer.

anybody have any suggestions how the status_url in the cart is able
to submit form data to a url and when the payment page comes

 implement that.

make sure you are not trying to submit to the e-gold SCI

within your form... tag to direct the page to appear in either
a new or current top level browser page.

hi ian,
my theory would be that if one can capture mouse clicks, the location
of the window is not relevant. i wouldn't care about the absolute
location of each click - just the relative distance between clicks,
which i would compute from the coordinates of each click. i think
some of them move the key window around *after each click* which
makes this a little harder - but still not impossible. some spyware
programs capture the click *with an image of the screen under the
click* - thats getting near impossible to defeat without some
external
device.

so we don't advertise SRK as making you trojan proof, but it does
help against most of the common ones and the hardware keystroke

Comic Sans MS (Western) -- a Font for Security

Some time ago I did an extensive search for a font that unequivocally
and CLEARLY differentiates between lower case letter l, numeral
1,
capital letter I, AND numeral 0 and capital letter O. I found
that font Comic Sans MS (Comic) works nicely. Each letter and
numeral in Comic is very distinctive and also easy to read. It also
clearly shows the difference between q and g (e-qold vs e-gold).
:-)

My original use was for my own ease of reading my own documents, but
it can help in a few other cases, also, such as in your browser to
show
you clearly what a link really is .

You can get Comic from the Microsoft website:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fontpack/default.htm

After downloading the font to your computer, run your virus scan on
it
before running it (it is an .exe file).

BTW, you DO have your Windows Explorer | View | Options set
to
show file extensions, don't you? (UNCHECK Hide MS-DOS
file extensions...)

When you download the file, make note of where you saved it,
otherwise
you will have to do a Find on comic32.exe. If it is at
C:\downloaded\comic32.exe then Run the file from
Start | Run | C:\downloaded\comic32.exe and follow the prompts
to install the font.

After installing the font, you can use it in some of your desktop
items
and in Netscape Explorer.

Note: I am using Windows 95, so what follows may not
necessarily,
but hopefully does, apply to other versions of Windows. I
also am
using Netscape 4.76. I do NOT use Internet Explorer or
Outlook, so
you are on your own with those. Furthermore, I do NOT
recommend
using Microsoft Outlook. If you are using Outlook it is like
you
are wearing a t-shirt with Kick Me printed on it, as it is
a
favorite target of virus writers/hackers.

Before changing any of your Windows or Netscape settings, make note
of them
or take a screen shot. (You can take a screen shot by pressing
Print Screen, pasting into Paint with Ctrl-V, then printing.)

In Windows, from Start or My Computer, click on
Control Panel | Display | Appearance (tab). There is a drop-down
menu
at Item. Some of the items allow you to change fonts. Your
choice.

In Netscape, from Edit | Preferences | Appearance | Font you can
change
the Variable Width Font from Times New Roman or whatever
to Comic Sans MS. You may also want to change the size to 10
from 12.

Finally, to make Comic your default display font in web pages
displayed by
Netscape, regardless of what the web page specifies, click on Use my
default
fonts, overriding document-specified fonts. You can always change
back to
Netscape's default of Use document-specified fonts, including
Dynamic Fonts.

I don't know of any way to change the font that Windows or Netscape
use
in their program windows at the top of your screen, such as
Netscape's
Location: window where you type or copy in URLs. Nor at the bottom
of
the Netscape screen where you see URLs as you mouseover links on a
web page.

If what you see at the bottom of a Netscape screen when you
mouseover a
web page link is not the same as what is under your mouse, you can
right-click
on the link, then left-click on Copy Link Location, then paste
(Ctrl-V)
into WordPad (choosing the Comic font) to see if the URL then shown
in
Comic that you are thinking of going to, looks OK.

To view a web page displayed with Comic, download and view with
Paint
the bitmap, go to:
http://home.earthlink.net/~beand/download/MyHome.bmp

Note: The actual page on the web does NOT use the font.

Note: when you go to MyHome.bmp it may load into your
browser
directly and display garbage. Just save (Save As...)
the
garbage page, then open it with Paint and it should
  display OK.

[e-gold-list] SRK fans...e-gold update notice

2001-07-26 Thread jrw

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

The e-gold SRK passphrase entry method is now available
at all points on the e-gold site where passphrase input is
required. Per your comments these enhancements have
been made:

 - the browser status bar and location field in the SRK popup
window have been made visible. This allows easier SSL
   verification.
 - keypad switching has been moved clientside for faster
   response.
 - cool new control buttons!

jay w.

p.s.
Because of a clientside javascript limitation on certain
Mac/Unix versions of Netscape, SRK may not work properly
in those environments. Since the majority of users (and viruses)
utilize the Windows platform, this tradeoff was made to allow
faster clientside keypad switching.

[e-gold-list] e-gold site updates - security enhancements

2001-07-19 Thread jrw

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

July 19, 2001

e-gold Ltd. (http://www.e-gold.com) has implemented
web site upgrades that provide for enhanced customer
and site security.

e-gold passphrase entry can now be optionally performed
by account holders clicking the SRK button next to the
passphrase input box. This input method provides increased
protection against keystroke loggers and some viruses designed
to capture keystrokes. (If you suspect your computer *has*
been infected by a virus, your first concern should continue
to be the removal of that virus.)

e-gold account creation now requires the inputting of a
randomly generated number displayed in a graphical manner.
This technique prevents other sites from submitting your
information to e-gold automatically, and prevents certain
denial of service (DOS) attacks.

Your comments or questions are welcome. Technical questions
may be addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Other questions may be
addressed by following the instructions at:
