Autorship Order: ABC or ACB?
Hello All, I have a question about the autorship order. I have heard and read somewhere that researchers seem to know that in a 3 author paper, the responsability of the second author on the paper is lower than the third author. How well known and accepted is this idea of autorship order? If the participation of multiple authors on a paper is clear and each participated as A=80%, B=40% and C=10%. And A and B are still graduate students and C is a local person of the study area. How should the order of the authors be? ACB or ABC? Socio-economic consequences of fish (re)introductions
Dear ecologgers, We are wondering if any of you can help us with a request for literature on the socio-economic impacts of fish introductions/re-introductions in marine and freshwater systems. We are currently in the process of preparing a review paper on fish (re)introductions and are finding that the vast majority of the literature relates to the biological and ecological results of introductions/re-introductions. However, in most cases these introductions/re-introductions have been motivated by socio-economic purposes (e.g. species conservation, recovering a native fishery, pest control), but whether these have been achieved or not seems to be very poorly documented. We wondered if this is really the case, or whether we just haven't managed to unearth some key part of the literature?! Thank you for any examples or suggestions you can provide. Well post a summary of responses to the list. Best wishes, Janelle Curtis (University of British Columbia) Heather Koldewey (Zoological Society of London) Gordon Reid (Chester Zoological Gardens) Janelle M Curtis, PhD NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow Centre for Applied Conservation Research University of British Columbia [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Autorship Order: ABC or ACB?
The issue of authorship always raise lots of questions. For my own purposes I either want to be first author or last author. The first person did most of the work, and by convention that many of us use, the last person is whose lab the work was done in. IMHO, whether I'm second of six or fourth of six doesn't really matter. On a more pragmatic note, how would one actually quantify what warranted third as opposed to fourth authorship. I know that you asked about 3-author papers but I'm trying to deal with the general case. cheers, g2 Gary D. DUTY: The candidate will satellite-collar and monitor approximately 50 wolves and 50 caribou. The candidate will also collect primary prey population data through aerial and ground surveys, assemble remotely sensed habitat data, and work closely with provincial, federal, industry and academic stakeholders to contribute to caribou population recovery in a region experiencing rapid industrial development. $$: PhD Assistantship and project funding is provided by the University of Calgary, University of Montana, and a consortium of industry partners including the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Weyerhaeuser Ltd., Parks Canada, and Shell Canada. PhD stipend provided at ~24,000/year + benefits. BACKGROUND: Mountain caribou are classified as threatened by the committee for the status of endangered wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and the species at risk act (SARA). Key factors leading to species endangerment include human-induced changes in predator-prey dynamics through forestry and oil and gas exploration. SCOPE AND STUDY AREA: The successful candidate will be part of an integrated research project examining anthropogenic changes to predator- prey dynamics over the entire range of mountain caribou in Alberta and adjacent areas of British Columbia from Banff National Park to Kakwa Provincial Park, B.C. QUALIFICATIONS: B.Sc. in wildlife biology, ecology, conservation biology, or related field; outstanding work ethic; exceptional quantitative skills; and interpersonal skills. Other assets might be field experience with predators and/or ungulates, experience with GIS analyses, remote sensing, GPS and VHF collar data, and scientific writing. TO APPLY: Send 1-page cover letter summarizing interest and relevant experience, resume/CV, unofficial transcripts, and contact information (including phone and email) for 3 references to Dr. Marco Musiani. Material should be included in one email with subject: PHD IN CARIBOU/WOLF APPLICATION PROCESS: PhD Position will start Fall 2007 with field work commencing as soon as May 2007. Re: Autorship Order: ABC or ACB?
Hello Karim, In many fields the last author is recognized as the senior author (the major professor for example) Not necessarily the person that did the most work, but the person who has the most experience and oversaw the production of the manuscript. This works well when the last author will be recognized by the readers as a senior researcher. I've been told by senior researchers that when submitting your CV, people like to see your name on publications shift from the first author in your earliest papers, to increasing numbers of papers where you are the last, or senior author. FW: Landscape ecology instructor
The Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida is seeking an instructor to teach two courses during spring semester, 2007. =20 =20 The two courses are: =20 WIS 4203 C Introduction to Landscape Ecology (3 credit hrs). This is an undergraduate course and part of a three course block; undergraduates majors in wildlife must take at least two of these three classes. The class emphasizes application of GIS applications of managing natural resources at the landscape scale. =20 WIS 6426 Landscape Ecology and Management for Biodiversity Conservation (4 credit hours). This graduate-level course is central to the educational background and research of most of our graduate students. Students taking this class become adept at quantitative modeling applications of ecological data within a landscape spatial scale and at short and long-term temporal scales. =20 =20 We have funding to pay the instructor $7,000 per course for each of the courses. Interested applicants should send a letter of interest, names and contact information for three references, and a CV. The letter of interest should include a brief statement of teaching philosophy, disciplinary expertise, interest and experience with teaching, and any thoughts about approaches to teaching the class. =20 Application materials should be sent electronically to me at the Email address provided below. Applications will be considered until a suitable, highly qualified applicant is found. =20 Thanks for your help in identifying a suitable instructor. =20 John P. Re: Autorship Order: ABC or ACB?
I agree with the comment that meaning of authorship order does differ across fields. For lab-based sciences, last author usually indicates the senior person in whose lab the work was done. In field ecology and wildlife studies, however, last author usually means you did least work (so second is better)! I suggest the recent paper in an ESA journal as an excellent read on this topic. The authors suggest including an attribution line with every article that clearly explains the role of each author. It's yet to be seen whether all journals would agree to publish such a statement or not. Re: Autorship Order: ABC or ACB?
Dear All, The only order that makes sense is the order of how much work each person did. First author for the author that did the most, second for the one who did second most, etc. I know some professors who run big labs like to have their names last. In my experience, they are last because they did the least amount of work with their students or post docs doing most and their names getting stuck on the end just becuase they run the lab. That is the way it should be. I would never put my name last out of three authors (or 20 for that matter) just because I run the lab. My name would go last if I did the least amount of work.
