Ph.D. student position available in Biology at McGill University, Montreal,
Canada

I am currently seeking a graduate student (Ph.D. or exceptional M.Sc.) to
start in September 2008 or January 2009. I am seeking bright, motivated,
independent students interested in ecological theory at the interface
between community and ecosystem ecology. Students with strong quantitative
or mathematical skills are particularly encouraged to apply.

Current research projects in my lab include:
• Merging food webs, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning by developing
novel models based on body size and applying these models to empirical data
on freshwater and savanna ecosystems

• Exploring the evolutionary emergence of food webs and its constraints on
existing ecosystems through evolutionary models based on body size and
physical constraints

• Understanding the assembly, persistence and functioning of food webs in
space by extending metacommunity theory to multitrophic systems

• Developing a novel approach based on population dynamics to species
synchrony and ecosystem stability in fluctuating environments, and applying
this approach to empirical data

• Exploring the ecological and evolutionary consequences of non-trophic
interactions, trait-mediated indirect interactions, and niche construction

• Building biodiversity–ecosystem functioning models based on traits to
predict future consequences of biodiversity changes
Interested students should contact me via email, including a cover letter
describing background and interests (including specific interests in my
lab), cv, transcripts (preferably official, if available), and contact
details for 3 referees.

Plant growth chambers, long-term perspective on maintenance expense

2008-01-29 Thread Kailen Mooney
Hello Ecologers,

This is a question for anybody who has had long-term experience with
reach-in plant growth chambers.

I'm in a position of having either (1) a very expensive walk-in plant
growth chamber that is serviced in perpetuity by our campus facilities
or (2) a much more reasonable reach-in chamber where I will be
responsible for maintenance.

I would really appreciate estimates, anecdotes, etc. of what can/does
happen to reach-in chambers over years of use and the costs of keeping
them running.

Thanks,

Kailen Mooney

Hi Tania and list members. =20

I also always note the lack of a list server for similar opportunities in t=
he UK and Europe. I've set up an ad hoc one in the past forwarding on mari=
ne jobs to people I know... The best lists to join and website to check out=
(I'm a marine biologist so some of this is bias) are:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.coastms.co.uk - marine and coastal job a=
nd conferences - Bob Earl is brilliant at distributing opportunities...

http://www.marbef.org/ - Maily European Marine and Coastal Jobs and Phd Stu=
dentships

http://www.environmentjobs.co.uk - General Environmental jobs - updated reg=
ularly

http://www.environmentjob.co.uk - Note the one letter difference loads of o=
pportunities here...

www.newscientist.com - this one goes without saying you can select which ar=
ea you want them to send you jobs from

http://www.earthworks-jobs.com - loads here at all levels coering biology a=
nd all earth related subjects

http://www.academicjobseu.com more postdoc/lecturer level

http://www.jobs.ac.uk/ Academic jobs in the UK and abroad...

http://www.omar.fr/content/section/14/72/ - yes its in French but most of t=
he adverts for internships/ phd's and post docs and jobs are in Englishmain=

I hope that is enough to get you started, if you are more specific with wha=

Different Unis also have their own lists so check out where you have been, =

Does anyone happen to know of an

PostDoc EvoEco marine inverts

2008-01-29 Thread Michael McCartney
Post-doctoral Research Associate

We seek a post-doctoral researcher interested in applying molecular techniques
to a variety of
questions in the general area of the evolutionary reproductive ecology of
free-spawning marine
invertebrates. Possible projects include:

1) Assessing the contribution of genotype at the sea urchin sperm bindin locus
to fertilization in
different flow regimes, in laboratory flumes, using microsatellites for
paternity analysis and
sequencing of cloned bindin alleles.

2) Exploring introgression and gamete recognition in hybridizing blue mussels
using a
combination of molecular markers for species and hybrid ID, assays for gamete
interactions, and
characterization of multiple sperm lysin loci.

3) Evaluating the causes and consequences of multiple paternity in a colonial
ascidian via
microsatellite-based paternity analysis.

A Ph.D. degree and prior experience with molecular methods is required.
Support is initially
available for one year, with continuation subject to future funding.

Consideration of applications will begin immediately and continue until the
position is filled.
Please send a CV and a cover letter to Phil Yund, Marine Science Center,
University of New
England, 11 Hills Beach Road, Biddeford, ME 04005. Electronic applications may
be submitted to
