The Sundarbans Tiger Project (STP), a flagship project of the Wildlife Trust of Bangladesh (WTB), is looking to recruit a Research Officer based in Bangladesh. WTB and STP offer the successful candidate the chance to work on a world leading tiger conservation project and be involved in assessing and studying the threats towards the largest remaining Bengal tiger population in the world. The Research Officer will be part of the Research and Monitoring Team and will be responsible for designing social and ecological studies as well as writing and finalizing reports, threat mitigation recommendations for the government, articles for websites and newspapers, and manuscripts for scientific journals. Furthermore this position includes oversight of administrative responsibilities for the team. Requirements: Excellent English written and verbal skills Higher university degree, preferably a PhD, in a relevant subject High interest in conservation Experience in social or ecological research Proven record of research outputs Good reviewing skills (eye for detail and formatting) GIS and statistical analysis skills are highly desirable Team player and intercultural competency Ability to deal with living conditions in a remote Bangladeshi location Conditions: Competitive local salary and generous annual leave allowance of 60 days The position is based in the rural city of Khulna with occasional field work in the Bangladesh Sundarbans and occasional trips to Dhaka Free accommodation in the project flat is provided One return flight and visa costs are provided Travel and health insurance are not provided; applicants must provide their own. The IV International Wildlife Management Congress is taking place July 9- 12 in Durban, South Africa. The theme of the IWMC is Cooperative Wildlife Management across Borders: Learning in the Face of Change. SEASONAL FIELD RESEARCH ASSISTANTS. Six (6) needed for continuation of long-term studies of bird responses to fire and fuels management and riparian bird community dynamics *in the mountains of central Nevada and the east slope of the Sierra Nevada in California and nearby ranges in Nevada.* Primary responsibilities include daily morning surveys (avian point counts), vegetation sampling at survey locations, and periodic sage-grouse counts on established transects. Excellent opportunity to explore the little-known, spectacular mountain ranges of the Great Basin (e.g., Wassuk, Sweetwater, Shoshone, Toiyabe, Toquima, and Monitor) and to interact with multidisciplinary teams of scientists and land managers. Duration approximately six weeks (*24 May through 6 July*) with few days off, but some afternoons free. Research assistants will work independently and in small teams. Field vehicle provided, or use your own 4WD vehicle and receive additional generous compensation for mileage. Camping at field sites will be the norm, with occasional access to small-town motels or Forest Service housing with hot shower and basic kitchen facilities. Applicants MUST have demonstrable experience and proficiency in identification of western birds by sight and sound; bachelor's or advanced degree in ecology or related field preferred. Applicants must be in good physical condition, able to work independently in rugged and remote locations, and willing to work long hours as necessary. Applicants also must have good organizational skills, including ability to collect and maintain accurate hard-copy data records; a valid driver's license with a good driving record and off-road 4WD experience; patience and a sense of humor. University of Alabama: oil impact on biogeochemical cycling in near shore marine systems starting in Fall 2012. Application deadline is March 15, 2012 (but exceptional candidates will be considered past this deadline). The successful applicant will work on elucidating spatial and temporal patterns in benthic nitrogen cycling in coastal waters impacted by the oil spill in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. The initial work will focus on using membrane inlet mass spectrometry to determine rates of denitrification.
