[ECOLOG-L] Donations needed! ESA Joan Ehrenfeld Award

2016-05-20 Thread Myla Aronson
The Joan Ehrenfeld Award only needs $1000 to become a permanent ESA award!

Your help is needed to fund this award. Our goal is to raise $1,000 by
September 2016 to establish an endowment for the Joan G. Ehrenfeld Award as
a permanent ESA award. This award currently has limited funding from a
portion of the member dues from the Urban Ecosystem Ecology section and
does not have funding to continue into the future. A permanent award in
Joan’s honor will assure that her legacy of outstanding research and
communication in urban ecology continues.

In 2012, The Urban Ecosystem Section of the Ecological Society of America
(ESA) established the Joan G. Ehrenfeld Award for best presentation by a
student in Urban Ecology at the society's annual meeting. Dr. Ehrenfeld was
a pioneer of urban ecology whose contributions helped shape our knowledge
of urban ecosystems. Her work spanned many taxa and systems, ranging from
invasive species dynamics, urban wetland ecology and ecosystem function,
restoration ecology, to the socio-ecological linkages determining
ecological function in urban watersheds. She was a Fellow of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science, and of the Society of Wetland
Scientists. Her inspiring teaching reflected her broad interests, and she
directed many undergraduates and graduate students into productive, ecology-
related careers. Her former students and postdocs are continuing her work
around the globe

With this award we honor Joan’s commitment to graduate-student education
and the importance of communicating research findings to the scientific
community and the public. By making a tax-deductible donation, you can
ensure her legacy continues.

We hope you will contribute to this award. Checks can be made out to
the “Ecological Society of America” with “UEE-Joan G. Ehrenfeld Award” in
the memo and sent to:
Ecological Society of America
1990 M Street, Suite 700
Washington, DC 20036

The Ecological Society acknowledges all donations with a thank-you letter
that outlines the tax exemptions.

For more information, please feel free to contact Myla Aronson directly at

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral Fellowship - Plant ecology, agronomy & pollination ecology Ralph Cartar

2016-05-20 Thread David W. Inouye
Postdoctoral position (plant ecology, agronomy & pollination ecology) at the
University Of Calgary, Canada

We are looking for a motivated PhD, within 5 years of their degree, to
join our pollination ecology team as a postdoctoral fellow, whose
research will broadly examine how bee pollination affects production of
commercial canola.

This postdoctoral fellow will have a background in plant ecology, plant
physiology, agronomy, and/or pollination ecology. The research will
involve a series of greenhouse and field experiments that examine the
mechanisms and outcomes underlying how amount and
timing of pollination interact with other factors (particularly
conspecific density and availability of water and nitrogen) to affect
yield in canola. The successful candidate is also encouraged to explore
novel directions in this research program. The work
is relevant to ecology, particularly in examining correlates of
investment in floral structures, and pollinator-mediated strategies of
allocation in annual plants that face trade-offs between growth and
reproduction in a limited season. The work is equally
relevant to agronomy, particularly in exploring the parameter space in
which use of managed pollinators can optimize costs of canola
production.

This research is a collaboration between four research groups in
Alberta: Dr. Ralph Cartar (University of Calgary), Dr. Neil Harker
(Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada), Dr. Shelley Hoover (Alberta
Forestry & Agriculture), and Dr. Steve Pernal (Agriculture &
Agri-Food
 Canada).

Location: The position is in Dr. Ralph Cartar’s lab in the Department of
Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary
(bio.ucalgary.ca/bio_info/profiles/ralph-cartar),

an institution with particular research strengths in pollination and
pollinator ecology. The successful candidate will spend 8 months (Aug
2016 to March 2017) involved with greenhouse experiments at the
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research station in
Lethbridge, Alberta, three months (June to August) in each of 2017 and
2018 involved with field trials at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
research station in Beaverlodge, Alberta, and the remaining time (i.e.,
~1.5 years) situated at the University of
Calgary, a dynamic and young research institution.

Period of support: 2.5 years; Salary: CAN $46,000 per annum; Start date: 1 Aug
2016

For full consideration, apply by 15 Jun 2016 (Applications will continue
after this date until a sufficient applicant pool has been achieved or
the position is filled. The closing date is subject to change without
notice to applicants)

To apply: Send cover letter, CV and names of 3 references to Ralph Cartar
(car...@ucalgary.ca)

then be analyzed? How common do you think was the use of VHS tapes in
science some 20 years ago? If you could quantify your answers, great. What
type of information was (and/or is) being captured with those methods (e.g.
anatomical, physiological, behavioral, etc.)?

Re: [ECOLOG-L] Looking for benthic invertebrate biomass and abundance databases

2016-05-20 Thread Doug Strom
You may want to contact the USEPA about the NARS program data, that
includes the NCCA, National coastal condition assessment data - see this
site:
https://www.epa.gov/national-aquatic-resource-surveys/data-national-aquatic-resource-surveys

Their data were not subsampled, and I believe biomass may have been
measured also.

Another database they maintain is benthic data from offshore dredging
assessment, the ODMDS program.
