[ECOLOG-L] Quick and dirty field tests?

2016-04-04 Thread Catherine Tarasoff
Hello and sorry for cross posting!

I'm working on a manual for on-farm demonstration research. It is designed
to promote farmer directed research. One thing we are considering is
putting together 'research kits' that the farmers can sign out.

I'd like to have a little binder with a bunch of handy quick and dirty
tests (similar to soil texturing by feel) that farmers can conduct with
little/no equipment or expense. Maybe for mineral deficiencies, toxicity,
pH, compaction. ?? If you have any gems up your sleeve could you
forward them to me? Also any references or descriptions of how to conduct,
how to interpret etc would be really appreciated!!

Please respond to me at ctara...@mtu.edu

Thanks so much for your help!

[ECOLOG-L] Developing your research - manual?

2016-01-13 Thread Catherine Tarasoff
Hello Eco-loggers:
I've been charged with developing a manual for local farmers who want to
conduct their own on-farm research, with out support from research
scientists. The manual has to be simplistic in nature but comprehensive in
scope. I would like each section to have a worksheet or activity for the
farmer. I'm wondering if any of you have developed a 'designing your
research project' type manual or series of activities for students? I'm
looking for a two things - the first is something that is 'thought
provoking'...or, brainstorming for one (to get the farmer thinking about
the possibilities).
The second would be actually designing the research - keeping in mind that
most farmers are not likely to replicate or have access to statistical
software.

If you have anything that you'd be willing to share - could you send it to
me off-list? My email is ctara...@mtu.edu

Thanks so much!

Catherine
