In order to meet our goal of increasing diversity in wetland science fields, the Society brings the students to our national meeting and matches them with mentors for the duration of the meeting. Undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in the sciences are encouraged to apply for this exciting opportunity. We will cover all travel expenses associated with the meeting. Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. Students graduating in Spring 2019 are eligible. [ECOLOG-L] Faculty position: Biology of infectious disease
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in the area of biology of infectious diseases. In particular, we seek to hire a biologist with expertise in ecology of disease, epidemiology, microbial pathogenesis or host-pathogen interactions. Prospective candidates completing research in various aspects of infectious diseases prevalent in the U.S.-Mexico border communities are especially encouraged to apply. The anticipated starting date is fall 2019. The successful candidate is expected to establish an extramurally funded research program and to teach and mentor undergraduate, masters’, and doctoral students. Research infrastructure in the Department of Biological Sciences includes state-of-the-art molecular, genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, imaging, bioinformatic and statistical core facilities as well as an insectarium, Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) and BSL-3 laboratories, and Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) -2 and ABSL-3 animal facilities. Candidates’ research should have strong potential for collaboration with existing Biology faculty as well as faculty from other UTEP colleges and schools (e.g., Chemistry, Health Sciences, Nursing, and/or Pharmacy), and be able to attract extramural funding. Ideally, the candidates’ research would have implications for translation into the clinical and/or the community setting. [ECOLOG-L] Ph.D. Assistantship in Arctic coastal carbon cycling
A Ph.D. research assistantship is available (beginning Spring or Summer 2019) in Arctic coastal carbon cycling in the Lougheed lab at the University of Texas at El Paso. This position is part of an interdisciplinary team funded by the National Science Foundation to study linkages between terrestrial and aquatic processes within Beaufort Sea lagoons at a newly established Arctic LTER site (ble.lternet.edu). The student will be expected to enroll in either our Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (science.utep.edu/eeb) or Environmental Science and Engineering (science.utep.edu/ese) doctoral programs. A background in aquatic biogeochemistry would be beneficial, with a degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a closely related field, preferred. [ECOLOG-L] Ph.D. Assistantship in Arctic coastal processes at the University of Texas at El Paso
Two Ph.D. research assistantships are available (beginning summer 2018) in Arctic coastal processes in the Lougheed and Tweedie labs at the University of Texas at El Paso. These positions are part of an interdisciplinary team funded by the National Science Foundation to study linkages between terrestrial and aquatic processes within Beaufort Sea lagoons at a newly established Arctic LTER site (ble.lternet.edu). Two separate positions are available and students will be expected to enroll in either our Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (science.utep.edu/eeb) or Environmental Science and Engineering (utep.edu/ese) doctoral programs: one position will focus on carbon flux within and from aquatic ecosystems and the second will focus on the causes and consequences of coastal erosion and land cover change on land-aquatic connections. The University of Texas at El Paso, Department of Biological Sciences, seeks a highly motivated doctoral student to study wetland ecology, which could include vertebrate, invertebrate or plant ecology at the genetic to ecosystem levels, beginning Summer 2017. Participation in undergraduate education activities, including design of laboratory exercises related to wetland ecology, is expected. POSITION DESCRIPTION COLLECTION MANAGER Location: University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, TX, USA Department: Biological Sciences Title: Natural History Collection Manager Classification: Academic staff, exempt Position Duration: 3 years, commencing no later than January 30, 2016 Salary: $37,277/year + benefits Supervisor: Dr. Eli Greenbaum, Director, UTEP Biodiversity Collections Posting:http://admin.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=73912 (Job ID: 2384) The collection manager for the University of Texas at El Paso Biodiversity Collections (UTEP-BC, natural history collections) will administer a world-class collection of specimens. The collections consist of fluid-preserved specimens, study skins, herbarium specimens, invertebrate collections, Cenozoic fossils, frozen tissues, wet and dry skeletons, acoustical recordings, digital and film-image archives, and extensive library holdings. The collections have an historical strength in Chihuahuan desert extant and extinct invertebrate and vertebrate specimens, and recent collections have focused on this region, Central and South America, and Central Africa. University curators and students, and national and international scholars use the collections extensively for research and education. The collections manager is responsible for day-to-day activities in the collection and reports to the director. Duties: 1. Collections management and conservation (40%) * Develop and maintain collection database (Arctos), including data migration from other computer programs to Arctos * Ensure long-term integrity and preservation of collections and collection-storage environment. * Maintain and improve collection-care protocols. * Maintain and organize records of collection activity, use, and status for annual reports, grant submittals, and other documentation. 2. Acquisition and collection development (10%) * Oversee the preparation and staging of newly acquired specimens for their integration into the collection. * Organize and prepare documentation necessary for specimen accession, including national and international permits and associated documentation. * Electronically catalog specimens and their associated information. * Participate in acquisition of specimens for the UTEP-BC by facilitating donations and by occasional fieldwork and expeditions at the direction of the curatorial staff. 3. Museum operational service (30%) * Process all specimen loans, exchanges, and gifts; incorporate received specimens into the collection; maintain appropriate records of such activities. * Collaborate with curators to plan and implement divisional goals, priorities, and programs. * Collaborate with other museum collections managers to achieve high quality collections care and economy of scale in all collections-related activities. * Work proactively to place specimens from the UTEP-BC collection into the hands of qualified researchers for study. * Assist and supervise users of the collections. * Respond to inquiries from scientists, governmental and consulting agencies, the public, and other users. * Participate in the museum’s public programming by providing information and specimens and assisting in exhibit design; assist in museum public functions. * Conduct tours for visiting scholars, students, and the public. 4. Supervision (10%) * Hire, train, and supervise undergraduate assistants. * Train and supervise volunteers working in the collection. 5.
