Re: [Elecraft] K2 Chirp
It happens to everybody...you just can't stay in the DSP menu when you are receiving. The DSP manual explains it; it is the noise of the auxbus communications which are normally done only with the RX muted and infrequently. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 Chirp
Hi Group, I've just recently finished a K2, S/N 4630. It has DSP, SSB, 160M Option,KI02 and the K60XV. All appeared well until today, when I noticed that tapping the DISPLAY Button from the frequency display to the DSP Menu, I get a cyclic beep...or burp. It changes frequency from DSP on to off. It only does this when in the DSP Menu. It is internally generated, as removing the antenna lead from driving two XV Transverters still has it burping away at a one second rate. Removing the KI02 leads to the Transverters still has the thing happily chirping away. I've stepped through all bands , 160M thru 144 Mhz. It is evident on all bands except 50Mhz. It varies in strength from Band to Band. Unplugging both Transverters has it still burping away ( Power leads and the KI02 Interface leads ). I don't know if this has just become active after fitting the K60XV, as I cannot remember noticing it before I installed the K60XV. I did have to move the VFO tuning on L30 to accomodate the 60M Option, as it would not lock. All band VCO Voltages moved upwards, with my max voltage about 7.4, and my min just a shade over 1.1v as per the destructions if any one band was out of spec. It only does this when you can see dSP bYP or dSP ON, or when you are looking at the DSP settings. Any help/advice on what this annoying burp is would be much appreciated. 73 Glenn VK4TZL -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. [Elecraft] K2 #4245 on the Air
My K2 number 4245 is finally on the air. I bought the kit at Dayton then within two weeks changed jobs and moved half way across the state. The kit sat unopened until November of last year, when I finally got through with the moving in, honey-do tasks and set-up of a work shop to begin construction. I've had a couple of nice QSO on SSB and PSK, and am trying to get my CW skills pack up to speed and try that out. I'm not sure I have the filters properly aligned yet, and may post on that later I want to thank the staff at Elecraft for their superb responses for parts to replace the ones I messed up. Also thanks to everyone here for the prompt responses to a couple of questions I posted. 73, Mike, W8ENG . ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] SSB audio level revisited
I've always experienced low RF output on SSB from my K2/100 when using my Heil ProSet Plus headset. While building my KAT-100 I also upgraded from 1.02 to 1.09 firmware on the KSB2 board. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!Now I get full power output on all bands in SSB mode. The sheet that comes with the 1.09 firmware only talks about the added vox setting of 0.2 seconds. Clearly other things have been done since 1.02. I just mention this in case there are others out there running old firmware in their KSB2's and are experiencing low RF output on SSB. 73 de Tom K2TA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Help me identify this capacitor?
Richard, That is a 4700 uF 150 volt capacitor. You may not be able to find an exact replacement, but do check the mounting and the size that will fit. You are seeking a replacement capacitor that will fit into the available space and can be properly mounted - the capacitance should be somewhere near 4700 uF, but the voltage may be 150 volts or higher. Mouser does list several that may be close to what you are seeking. Mouser's 539-CGS200V5400 or 75-36DY472F250CD2A or 75-36DX422F250CF2A are possibilities I ran across - do check the physical size carefully before ordering, those large capacitors are quite pricy. 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - Since this list is a font of everything electronic, can y'all help me with this? I've got a HP DC power supply (6443B) that's worked great for a long time. I DON'T have a service manual for it (of course). Recently, when I turn this thing on, the voltage comes up, then drops off slowly (this is under no load conditions) over 20-30 seconds, then blows the C/B. I think I've troubleshot the problem down to the supply side capacitors. They're massive can-types. About 3" in diameter by 6" tall. On the side is the following information: Sprague Compulytic 32D 4500-150 DC 7230 L 0180-1839 I know Sprague has merged several times, but I've been trying to get some information about this part from my normal suppliers (Mouser, Digikey) with no luck... Rather than buying the manual for $35, can someone out there help me "decode" this part number? I figure if I can find the original capacitance and voltage/load ratings, I can just find a more modern replacement. Thanks in advance for the help, guys. Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 just stopped talking
Bob, I too find TXD voltages in the KIO2 manual are a bit confusing. They are correct only if one looks at the active signal, but that will never be read on a voltmeter - a 'scope is needed to show it. (the same set of problems are present in the KPA100 manual too). The normal voltage for pin 12 (K2 TXD) is 0 volts and goes to 5 volts when a data bit is transmitted. On the RS-232 side (pin 5), about 13 volts is to be expected when the input pin (12) is at 0 volts, and it should go to -8 volts or so at the times pin 12 is at 5 volts. Do you have the menu PORT parameter set to ON? 73, Don W3FPR - Original Message - My KIO2 has just stopped communicating. Osc is OK, neg volts -10 Volt checks look OK except for U1 Pin 5 which is 13 should be -8 U1 Pin 12 is 0 should be 5? BUT U1 pin 5 goes to the TXD line and thence to the control boards U6 pin 25, which is shown in the Manual as being at 0 normally. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Comparison
Hi William - If you are a member of the ARRL you can download the reviews of each radio plus the detailed reports too. I've owned an ArgoV, Orion and K2.Orion had best receiver but did not copy anything during close-in contest QRM/DX pileups that the K2 couldn't copy too. The ArgoV was poor compared to K2.The "roofing" filter in the ArgoV has to be wide enough to pass AM and FM signals relying on the DSP for selectivity. I had to move 17kHz up from W1AW before I could stop the AGC from pumping on the ArgoV. It was useless trying to copy DX on 160M when W1AW was on. With the K2/100 I can copy weak top band Europeans less than 1kHz away from the 45db over S9 W1AW signal here in NY with no problem. Here is my ArgonautV portable station with built-in paddle and auto-antenna tuner... http://www.k2ta.com/argonaut.jpg Here is my K2 portable station with built-in paddle and auto-antenna tuner...same money spent. http://www.k2ta.com/k2plus1_front2.jpg If you were trying to decide between the Orion and the K2 it would be a tough choice. I owned both and ended up keeping the K2 and selling the Orion. There's really no comparison in RX performance between the ArgoV and the K2...unless you really want general coverage, FM and only mode B keying along with poorer selectivity and close-in performance. The green LED readout of the ArgoV, however, is better than the Orion or the K2...It was readable across the room without my glasses and the best readout of any radio that I have ever owned. 73 de Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: "wayne burdick" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "William E. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 - 80m poor quality SSB
However, my 80M SSB distortion turned out to be a different solution. Like Stewart, I saw the jumpy power output on 80M as I varied the output from 11 to 100+ watts. It was not smooth and either was my SSB signal. The problem persisted through the implementation of the solution listed below. a) A 1k resistor is fitted across RFC3. b) R4 in the HV bias supply is changed from 100k to 39k. I also, with Gary's help, modified the KSB2 ALC - "If the SSB RF output goes as high as 150-200w, there is a problem with the ALC on the KSB2 and I know just what to do to correct that. R9 should be changed to 1.5K, and the trace to Q1 is cut and a 1K resistor is inserted across the trace. The 1K resistor should be a small 1/8w or SMD type, or cut the leads really short to fit in the limited space between Q1's base and pin 6 of the KSB2 where the base circuit normally goes. This gives the ALC the extra control it needs to hold the SSB PEP RF output in check." It was better, but not completely gone. The cure, for me, was the Power Control Mod on the Elecraft web site - www.elecraft.com/Apps/Power_Control_Mod.html 1.6K ohms looked best when I tested, but used a 1.3k because that was what I had. Locals have pronounced my 80M SSB distortion cured. Hope that helps... 73 de NA8M John ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 - 80m poor quality SSB
Adi, Stewart Baker G3RXQ has also been fighting this problem and he sent me a note a week or so ago saying that he understood that on Dec 14th Eleraft issued an Errata for the KPA100 which changed R4 in the HV osc from 100k to 39k and ** added a 1k resistor in parallel with RFC3 ***. There was no reason given in the errata. Stewart put these changes into his KPA100 and so have I. Our 80 meter performance is now normal. These two changes are obviously aimed at fixing the T/R instability in some KPA100's caused by resonance in or near the 80 meter band involving RFC3 and the junction capacitance of D14. The 1k resistor spoils the Q of the resonant circuit without affecting receiver sensitivity or bias voltages and the change in R4 is probably to increase the design margin of the HV bias in some units with a 'lazy' oscillator. I had been waiting for an official Elecraft recommendation to the list but I finally got tired of waiting. In my opinion the 1k resistor across RFC3 is a very good solution. The change in R4 is not necessary if your bias voltage is already within the range recommended in the instructions. Don K7FJ --- So K2 Gentelmans...one question.. To fix RF switching problem in KPA100 there are 3 way's available (posted) 1. 12pF to ground from 1n4007's junction (just mooves a problem arround) 2. 1K resistor instead of RFC3 (affects RX preformance and marginal switching at high power levels) 3. I used my FT1000MP to listen to the 2nd harmonic of the 80m signal. Having read recent mails I first monitored the 3.5MHz signal and found the "Buzz" that others had reported. I then tried the following frequencies on 80 and noticed that as I increased the power control on the K2 the power output would suddenly jump, then when the control was turned ACW the power would reduce smoothly and then suddenly drop. It was also observable on the FT1000MP S-meter, accompanied by a click. It was like a form of hysteresis. All other bands gave smooth power control. The results were as follows:- 3.8MHz Low point=20W High point=70W Hysteresis=50W 3.7MHz Low point=25W High point=70W Hysteresis=45W 3.6MHz Low point=35W High point=70W Hysteresis=35W 3.5MHz Low point=40W High point=70W Hysteresis=30W Very unsatisfactory... I substituted a 1k resistor for RFC3, and all the 80m problems went away. Smooth power control on all bands and a better SSB signal on 80m. Many thanks to those who found/cured this problem that first showed itself on CW, I would certainly have spent a lot of time tracking this one down ! I would suggest that owners of K2/100's check to see that their rig does not exhibit these symptoms as it can make quite a big difference to transmitted signal quality. I, like a previous correspondent think that Elecraft should make some comment on this design problem, and it's solution. 73 Stewart G3RXQ Thanks for the "Heads up" Don. I will look forward to the official

It is:- --- K2/100 MANUAL (Appendix G) ERRATA Rev. C-3, December 14, 2004 --- a) A 1k resistor is fitted across RFC3. b) R4 in the HV bias supply is changed from 100k to 39k. The 1k resistor damps out the resonance on 80m in my KPA100, and I no longer experience the problem. 73 Stewart G3RXQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] KPA100 - 80m poor quality SSB
So K2 Gentelmans...one question.. To fix RF switching problem in KPA100 there are 3 way's available (posted) 1. 12pF to ground from 1n4007's junction (just mooves a problem arround) 2. 1K resistor instead of RFC3 (affects RX preformance and marginal switching at high power levels) 3. Change RFC3 100uH with 1mH choke (dont know abt side effects but shure want to know the current rating of choke, cause i suppose must be at least 150mA or more?) Which way is the best for now? [Elecraft] K2 DSP Problem
Hello Folks, Finally had a chance to work on some of my kits. I had completed the DSP kit and just now am installing it. No smoke, but the red LED remains on. I've checked all the soldering, reseated U1, checked D3 (for type and function), re installed the boards. Firmware is 204p in #3311. Still no go... Any suggestions? Thanks!
