[Elecraft] KPA100 Problem?

2005-04-21 Thread Larry Dodson
I am not an experienced builder, but having purchased a ready built K2, I
decided that the experience of building a KPA100 would be good for me. And
everything has gone pretty well until I got to page 41 of the manual and
conducted the tests. Most (J3 lead, Q1 and Q2, and J2) are fine and the
readings are as expected. However, Q9 and D13 readings should be over 10K and
I am getting 15Megs on my DMM, which is an older digital type. Granted, 15M is
greater than 10K. Q9 (MOSFET) and D13 (Diode) appear OK and I have worked
through the schematic, taking resistance checks along the way, and everything
appears OK. I am thinking that it could be my DMM and any thoughts from the
group would be appreciated. Larry (G0IKE)

!Re: [ELECRAFT] Using XG1 to measure feedline losses

2005-04-21 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Ron D'Eau Claire wrote:

One BIG factor is whether you are using a balun in the system. I've yet to
find a balun that isn't unpredictable and frequently lossy when used in a
feedline with high reactance, that is any balanced feedline with an SWR much
above 1:1, no matter the type.

For just that reason I still use a link-coupled fully-balanced tuner when
feeding my doublet with open-wire line.

The losses in a balun all depend on just how high the SWR on the line is -
that is, how much reactance is present.

AMEN !! Seems to me that baluns of the *transmission line* type
have become *magic boxes* and so often used with high load (feeder) VSWR -
say 3:1. Just because the balun does not get hot or explode at the
transmitter power used, leads folk to believe that the balun is not adding
loss. Perhaps the habit of some manufacturers of Antenna System Couplers who
put a balun at the antenna feeder side of an unbalanced T or L network to
save cost has something to do with this.

4 wire cross connected line is very useful, especially at VHF. The
loss due to radiation is considerably less than the radiation loss found in
2 wire line, the ohmic loss is less since each *side* consists of two wires
in parallel, and low Zo lines can be built e.g. 200 ohms.

Ron, you have made my day !

[Elecraft] some K2 issues

2005-04-21 Thread Lloyd Lachow
Last night, I did the C22 correction using WWV, and
after a couple of tries, it worked like a charm, and
it's very close, if not exact - I'm happy. (yes, I
re-ran CAL PLL, etc., after) Also perfected the
listening to the lowest sounding background noise
method for tweaking the BFOs for my filter settings,
and now there's little to no change in the pitch of a
received signal in CW or CW reverse...it worked very
well, was easy to do, and I've begun to see how being
able to switch to CW reverse in the presence of some
types of QRM is a great boon. And, of course, the
received signal is smack in the middle of all my
filter settings.

Two questions: first, when I ask for 5W, I get
about 6.2W, both as shown on the K2 display, and on my
WM-2 wattmeter. I need to only ask for 4.3W to get
5W out. Is this normal/typical? I'm guessing the
asked-for power level will be closer to the gotten
power level when I've installed my KAT2...yes?

Second, yesterday, while playing with/operating my
K2, there was a blinking decimal point after all the
numbers, and before the c. I was reading through the
manual, also operating, trying to find some reference
to that, but didn't, and noticed at some point that it
had disappeared. What was it?

  Thanks!

RE: [Elecraft] some K2 issues

2005-04-21 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
LLoyd,

The basic K2 power metering is an RF Probe type and is very dependent on the
load - if it is anything other than 50 ohms pure resistance, the K2 power
indication may be in error. Even when driving a 50 ohm non-reactive dummy
load, an in-line wattmeter in the path may introduce some reactance and will
cause the K2 to display the power incorrectly.

Yes, the KAT2 has a real wattmeter and once properly calibrated will be as
accurate as the calibration.

[Elecraft] OT: Longwave Broadcast In Europe

2005-04-21 Thread Jim Brown
For some AES (Audio Engineering Society) standards work I am doing
(on EMC), I need to get a handle on the approximate field strengths
used by long wave broadcast stations (150-250 kHz) in Europe and the
UK. Information on transmitter power and antenna details for US
broadcast stations is available on a public FCC website. Is there a
comparable site for the UK and other EU countries? Does someone here
have direct knowledge of these transmitters? Comparable data for
shortwave broadcasters could also be helpful.

Please reply off list -- I don't want to burden the list with this
discussion.

  OK...I'm tuning a balanced-fed loop through a ZM-2,
and get pretty close. Both the K2's wattmeter and the
WM-2 wattmeter, which is between the rig and the
tuner, are displaying the same power. Even if
something is causing the K2's display to be off, would
that also affect the WM-2's reading? Should the WM-2
be after the tuner? Would the K2 be more accurate with
the WM-2 gone? How would I know?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 KAT 100 choices

2005-04-21 Thread Don Brown
Hi

The KAT100-1 is $239 and includes all of the case pieces you need to build
the tuner. The KAT100-2 only includes the front and rear panels to fit the
EC2. You still need to purchase the EC2 and you will not use the front and
rear panels that come with the EC2. The EC2 is $59 plus the KAT100-2 is $219
total $278. If you want to buy the KAT100-1 and then convert to the -2 later
then you will buy the -1 for $239 then later purchase the EC2 for $59 and
the panel kit for $39 for a total of $337. If the plan is to go with the
tuner in the EC2 then I would buy the -2 and the EC2 as this would save you
$59. You can use the KAT100-2 with or without the KPA100 installed in the
EC2 but typically the KAT100 and KPA100 is installed into the EC2 and the K2
has the QRP lid. The K2 can then be used QRP or plugged into the EC2 box for
QRO. Note you will need the KIO2 installed in the QRP lid for this to work
as the interface signals are brought out on the 9 pin connector on the KIO2

It has no vacuum tubes, don't know about SMD. It's
a QRO amp that can be configured in a number of
interesting ways and doesn't require the K2 to operate.
A very quiet switching power supply. Availabilty? Best
guess late summer or early fall.

[Elecraft] For Sale: POWER/SWR METER

2005-04-21 Thread Peter Kerklaan

I have for sale a Tandem Match Power / SWR meter, (ARRL handbook).
This a very accurate Power / SWR meter that I have build into a K2 project
enclosure.
It fits nicely on top or underneat of the K2. The power ranges are 5, 10,
50,
100, 200 and 500 Watt. The ranges are defined with high precition resistors
you can changes

the different ranges (if you want to) by changing the resistors.
It comes completely with directional coupler, cables and documentation.
Powering of

the meter is with a 9V battery so it can be used mobile.

Please send me an e-mail if you are interested

(please remove the xx on both sides) I will send pictures of the item.

Very interesting test and another use for the XG1!

Remember, the fat ladder line may be not canceling the currents, ie is not
as balanced as the more narrow line. Or maybe, the window narrow line is
just the better match to the tuner or it is the routing and the surrounding
influences.

That is a good point, as you do not want the AGC to activate giving a wrong
reading on the comparisons.

If it were possible to disable AGC, you would be able to be sure it is out
of affecting measurements. Also, you should use a step attenuator to make
sure no other circuits are overloaded for the testing. Make sure your
indicating point gives 10 dB steps or whatever step for each attenuator
change to verify linearity at the control settings you have picked.

I haven't been around the Elecraft history long enough to know, but I recall
that earlier versions required CAL PLL on all bands while new versions only
require it to be run on 40m. If the AppNote still is useful information but
out of date it should as well be updated to reflect the current
hardware/firmware procedures, or at least have a note that says for units newer
than xxx do abc instead.

An external 4:1 balun is typically less lossy than the built in 4:1 baluns.
Better still, use the W5YR idea, a bead ferrite choke on the coax output,
then connect there with a coax to binding post adapter for balanced line,
and you eliminate questions about your balun.

An alternate is to use a coax cable choke on a plastic Coke bottle, (liter
bottle) for form.

It's not a rumor.

Elecraft unveiled their solid-state 800-watt all band (160-10) amp at the
DX convention in Visalia last weekend. Eric told me that another version
of the amp would also be available that doubles up on the finals which
would put out a full 1500 watts. Availability will be later this year.

I'm sure Eric will announce the details soon on this reflector.

Beads are great if you're using coax, mostly because they are low-loss and
don't change the impedance presented to the tuner.

Sometimes a 4:1 balun is the worst choice. It reduces the impedance the
tuner 'sees' for a load. If it's being used as it was intended - in a
fairly-well matched load such as 300 ohm line to a folded dipole cut to
length - it's FB. In that case it'll translate the 300 ohms to 75 ohms, and
easy match for the tuner.

But, if the 4:1 balun is looking into an antenna or feed line with a high
SWR the impedance it's driving might be very low, perhaps only a few ohms.
If the 4:1 balun can handle it at all, it'll divide that impedance by four
again, making it a very tough match for most tuners.

W5YR, (sk) used the beads for transition to his balanced line adapter to the
coax connection on his tuner. That is the beauty of the cable choke and

transformation ratio is taken care of inside the tuner, but RF is blocked
from the tuner case.

the story as of last saturday morning ;-) was that the amp may include 6m
(yay!) and that the 1500W unit will come out after the 800W is on the
market. (6m would be derated, however, because 6m is about at the limit of
what the finals can do.)

The 800W version has the switching power supply built in; the 1500W version
has the supply in a separate box. The supply is Elecraft designed and
extremely quiet (as you might expect).

The amp is fully automatic (a la Alpha/ACOM), runs with any xceiver and has
some cool SO2R features that Eric will surely elaborate on. It also weighs
less than 16kg, ready to go!

[Elecraft] Low PLL reference oscillator range

2005-04-21 Thread Paul Bruneau

Hi all-

K2 #4818 here, I'm in Alignment and Test part II

Everything has gone great, my soldering is nice if I do say so myself,
I'm very careful with my parts, but I have an issue with the PLL
Reference Oscillator Range.

My High freq: 12099.03
My Low Freq: 12089.77
My range: 9.26

The book says it must be at least 9.8 and to see troubleshooting. I
wish they had put a nice three digit number next to that note so I knew
where in troubleshooting to look, but even if I knew, I don't know what
I would do...

Is 9.26 really too low? And what is it too low for? I'm just a guy with
a soldering iron who knows most letters of morse code without peaking!

I have been continuing for now. VCO Alignment went fine. BFO test went
fine. If this is really a problem, where will I see the negative
aspects of it?

Thanks everyone, you all make one fine list!

[Elecraft] (no subject)

2005-04-21 Thread Steve Banks
Hi Everyone-

I'm looking for any thoughts or suggestions from anyone about some recent
VSWR tests I've made on two antennas.

GAP TITAN BACKGROUND: I've had a GAP Titan vertical antenna running with my
K2 (S/N 1599) for several years. The K2 and the GAP have served me very
well (QRP WAS, 28 countries, etc.). The GAP is fed with about 80 ft of RG8U
type coax (Belden 8214). Its VSWR measurements look completely normal to me
when measured from here in my shack using an MFJ 259B meter. For example,
typical VSWRs on 20m range from about 1.7 to 2.1 measured directly at the
feedline PL259 connector. Most of the other seven GAP bands display similar
expected VSWR ranges.

Here in my shack the GAP feedline connector is attached to the center
(common) port on a manual (not electronic) Delta-4 coaxial switch. The K2
and a couple of other rigs (Drake and Heathkit) are connected to the
switchable Delta-4 ports. That arrangement enables simple rig switches to
the GAP antenna without having to move the feedline from rig-to-rig.

Measurements of feedline VSWR made THROUGH the Delta-4 switch to the GAP
antenna with a 259B meter produce very similar results to those made
directly at the feedline connector (i.e. with the switch bypassed).
Conclusion: the Delta-4 switch seems completely transparent to the
rig/feedline system. So far so good.

HEXBEAM RECENT ADDITIONS: I recently put up a five-band HexBeam (2
wire-type elements for each of the five bands, 20m-10m). It seems to
perform very well. The K2's KAT2 tuner likes it, as do the two other rigs
and tuners I have (Drake and Heathkit). In the process of finishing the new
Hex antenna, and shaking down its performance after installing it, I
discovered one defective feedline PL259 connector which I replaced
(naturally, outdoors on a windy day).

Following that, I measured the HexBeam's VSWR across its five bands from the
shack feedline connector with the 259B; all was well with it. VSWRs
measured between 2.2 and 1.5 with no strangeness or instability seen on any
of its five bands. Values on 20m, for example, ranged from 2.2 down to 1.7,
depending on frequency. Similar measurements show up on the Hex's other
four bands. (The top of 10m is somewhat higher, but that's not my issue.)

MY ISSUE: Even though the HexBeam's 20m VSWR measurements appear quite
normal made directly at its shack feedline connector using the 259B meter,
they are VERY DIFFERENT when measured through a Delta-4 switch. The GAP
antenna's VSWR's are very normal-looking when made through its Delta-4
switch, but the HexBeam and 259B meter are NOT HAPPY with a Delta-4 switch
in place. (The HexBeam's Delta-4 switch is actually a separate switch, not
the same one the GAP is connected to.)

For example, instead of seeing a 20m range from 2.2 down to 1.7 on 20m
WITHOUT the Delta-4 switch in place, I see values from about 4.5 or 5.0
across the whole band WITH IT IN PLACE. The 259B meter also appears quite
skittish making measurements through the switch. It seems unable to
decide on R,X and SWR values that remain reasonably stable.

Something about the Delta-4 switch seems to have upset the HexBeam's VSWR
applecart when being tested with the 259B. I see no such strangeness when
measuring through the switch to a dummy load or to the GAP antenna when
connected to the same switch. The only unexpected results seen through the
switch are those made to the HexBeam.

Just for jollies I decided yesterday to ignore the apparent problem, and
just let my K2 and other rigs run on the HexBeam, each with its own tuner.
All were happy, with the HexBeam's directivity quite obvious on all of them.

I've disassembled both of my Delta-4 switches, cleaned their contacts,
verified that all of my cable connections to the switches are secure and
correct, and that no other dumb-thumbing factors have been introduced by me.
I've done all the usual loosening-wiggling-tugging efforts to see if I can
find a cable connector that might be in trouble, but nothing has shown up
yet.

MY QUESTION: Has anyone else ever used Delta-4 switches and seen similar
unstable/unexpected VSWR results, either with a HexBeam or some other
antenna connected to it? It seems obvious that the switch, only when
connected between the HexBeam and a rig, introduces some sort of VSWR
increase, but I've run out of ideas for what to try next. Yesterday my
granddaughter said, Just quit measuring and start QSOing! Ah, the wisdom
of a 12-year-old, huh?

Thanks and 73 to all for the bandwidth and for any thoughts.

Steve Banks

Steve,
Have you swapped the two Delta-4s to see if the problem with the Hexbeam is
affected by both switches or just the one originally connected to the
Hexbeam.
If just one of the switches has the problem, you've isolated the problem.
If they both have the problem then something unusual is affecting both
switches. Perhaps a current imbalance is on the coax for that antenna and
it can not be handled by the switch. I wonder if a current balum made of 50
ferrite beads would help in that case. Or you could coil up the coax at the
base of the antenna to made a current balun; six turns 6 inches in diameter
is the usual configuration, but you may need more since it is a stubborn
case.

Sorry I don't know enough to really help you. An antenna switch is a luxury
I don't yet have. I still must use the Armstrong method.

I agree with swapping the two switches to see of problem is on both. Is
there any other grounding to the switch chassis?

Other than that, are you using same length coax jumpers, (same jumpers) and
just subbing antennas? I have seen many problems move with jumpers, even
those you think are good by normal tests. Still, since you have done the
wiggle test , I am surprised you did not find anything.

What is different about feed to Hex Beams? Any restriction/ limit on
feedline length? Is the beam pointed toward the shack when you observe high
SWR?

My thinking cap is ON.

Sounds like it is a simple 50 ohm coax connection. However, compact

[Elecraft] new product

2005-04-21 Thread David
here is an idea for a new elcraft project for all of us hams
a clock dual time clock with big lcd display
one part set to local time the other set to utc time
and make it so that the utc does not change with the saving time but stays
set to utc but the local clock would change
also make the clock to pickup the wwv signal decode it and keep the clock
set to the right time then to really make it nice give it a either net port
and allow it to serve up the time of day on our personal networks
now that would be a great little time piece for the shack

see ya

It's not a rumor.

Elecraft unveiled their solid-state 800-watt all band (160-10) amp at the
DX convention in Visalia last weekend. Eric told me that another version
of the amp would also be available that doubles up on the finals which
would put out a full 1500 watts. Availability will be later this year.

I'm sure Eric will announce the details soon on this reflector.

What was the price associated with the 800 watt linear? I am sure I
cannot afford it, just curious ;)

Great idea. Expanding on that idea, have it so that it is expandable
with weather station accessories that can be interfaced to the computer
to get date/time/WX. Could include a wireless/remote WX sensors for
indoor/outdoor temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed
and direction. Each function could be a separate module but could
integrate fully into the one overall project.

This sounds like a nice idea. I'd build one.

RE: [Elecraft] More rumors?

2005-04-21 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Yes, Blasphemy in the eyes of the 'QRP only' folks, but consider that the K2
has grown in respect by leaps and bounds - at first it was considered a 'toy
radio' by some, but it has become noticed by not only the QRP folks, but
also by the QRO, contesting, and DX communities as a superb receiver coupled
with a good transmitter. It just makes good business sense to expand the
market to all potential customers. It is not necessary to buy the BIG AMP,
the basic QRP K2 is still the same as before - each to his own, and Elecraft
is managing to provide products that promise to appeal to all persuasions
within Ham Radio.

Elecraft now has, or will soon have, products that encompass the field from
handheld portable HF radios to full legal limit gear. That is quite an
accomplishment for the 'folks at Aptos'. Take your pick, minimalistic QRP
or full power QRO - Elecraft has something to fit your wants and desires.

Re: [Elecraft] Low PLL reference oscillator range

2005-04-21 Thread John, KI6WX

Paul;
I designed the temperature stability part of the PLL reference oscillator.
The PLL reference tuning range needs to be a minimum of 9.8 kHz if you want
to operate on 160 meters. A tuning range of 8.8 kHz will not work at 1.8
MHz. If you only want to operate down to 3.5 MHz, a PLL reference tuning
range of 8.8 kHz is fine.

The 8.8 kHz that appeared on the Elecraft web site was a typo - it has now
been corrected to 9.8 kHz minimum. ECS has not been able to control the Q
of the 12 MHz crystals as tightly as we would like. When they deliver
higher Q crystals, the tuning range becomes narrower and the larger 12uH
inductor is required to compensate for the higher Q crystals.

9.8 may be fine, but I have 9.26 (see below) :)

I will check out the What's New section as Dave G3VGR suggested, and if
that doesn't make sense to me I'll contact Elecraft as Dave Lowenstein
suggested.

Thanks all, and any additional comments definitely welcome!
